Can the Archos 101 stream MKV over the network? - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I finally have my 101 and so far very happy with it, but I can't seem to be able to stream MKV or mp4 movies. It plays them from internal/external memory, but not over WiFi. It shows folder empty browsing from the player and from the browser it sees the files but doesn't see them as media files... is that normal?

The player uses the Medialib, which doesn't scan the network.
And which browser do you use?

I use the stock file browser. Also tried Es File Explorer, but that tries to download the mkv, saying this file type can't be streamed

Then you are using UPNP not smb

Yes, because when trying to use smb I put in the user/password, but for some reason it doesn't seem to like it... on Win7
any advice on what I need to do to make it work, please?
...and why to avi files work over upnp?

The UPNP Doesn't work for MKV.

OK solved my smb issue, in a way I would never had thought...
I rebuild my media index because I had put some music on the 101 which didn't show in the coverflow and then went tothe video player checked the smb and I was allowed access without asking for password or anything

[Q] Streaming .avi over LAN. Can I choose player?

Running VEGAn 5.1.1 and these .avi's begin to play in what must be the default player. After a few seconds they stop and spawn the following message:
"Caching. This media does not support streaming, player will be started after transferring completely."
I'd love to try RockPlayer or some others to see if that helps but I'm accessing these files through ES File Explorer and long pressing the file doesn't give me an option of media player. Nor can I open RockPlayer first and navigate to the .avi as I can't get RP to see any but locally stored media.
Anyone point me in the right direction? Any tips at ALL about streaming over LAN? Thanks loads.
astro and es explorer support wan/lan.
what codec do you have on your avi. i tend to stick with mp4. as those work best.
try remount your sd card and restarting tab
Use CIFSmanager to mount the shared files, then stream away

Allshare app

When streaming video using the allshare app from a laptop to the sgs2, is there a way to enable viewing of mkv files on the sgs2?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I tried this myself using a custom DLNA client, but it seems that the allshare app doesn't support .mkv files even though the actual phone does play .mkv files (tested by actually throwing an .mkv into the phone's internal memory, plays like a dream...).
I suspect the app won't be able to run it regardless, your best bet is to try to get the file converted into a xvid .avi file, although the file will be larger than it is as an .mkv if you don't want a drop in quality.
I spent hours trying to get this to work, sadly no luck
I have found the same thing, allshare wont stream play most of my network video files (DLNA or SMB). I have to use a network file explorer (file expert, es file explorer, [astro smb doesnt work]) and then a player to stream it (rockplayer, moboplayer, mvideoplayer) Different combinations depending on the file format, size and if it has subtitles.
For me AllShare doesn't seem to work at all
I will try to flash a new rom.. Maybe this will help

[Q] stream mkv from nas?

Have an external hd connected to my western digital media hub, both have quite a lot of movies on there id like to stream to my phone, i can stream mp4 through twonky quite easily but 99% of my movies are ripped in mkv format, would be perfect if i could stream them to my phone then use hdmi out to watch in another room, any ways to do this?
no then? :s
+1
Would like to know any app that can stream media files from smb/cifs share.
CIFS Manager will get you file level access to the NAS, provided the kernel you're running supports CIFS (I don't have an SGS, so can't tell you). You should be able to find instructions in the forums.
In terms of playback of the actual files, if they're playable from SD card, they should work via CIFS manager.
Have a look into Plex as its an awesome app. It has a problem on the S2 at the mo but there is away around this, read the post here:

Another way to try is to dl UPnPlay and then see if this works, you may need to download rockplayer but the stock video player should work with UPnPlay

program that allows streaming audio/ video from DLNA sources???

so, there used to be a program called ORB that allowed you to stream audio/video/pictures from your home network devices to your evo4g; they stopped updating it awhile ago, and, it no longer works with 2.3.3
has anyone found a system/program, that allows you to stream stuff from your home DLNA compliant sources, to the EVO3d?
preferably, via 3g/4g, so it would work when you are away from your home wifi..
thanks so much!
Yes, it comes preinstalled on the EVO.. its called media server... When you click on gallery, you can touch the top bar and pick media server and it will search for available content...

unfortunately, it doesnt show any of the videos on my 2 DLNA compliant NAS boxes...
anyone else find anything?
thanks!
Try using iMediaShare, its a free app that works well on my PS3.
imedia share shows the nas boxes on my network, but, wont play any .mkv files, which is how I encode my bluray movies...
I guess I need a media player that plays .mkv files over the network...
I used iMediaShare with MoboPlayer and it plays mkv from DLNA sources. It stutter a little.

how do you get imedia share to use moboplayer?
I can't seem to get imedia share to see that I want to use moboplayer to play vids..
thanks!
I didn't have to do anything, it switched to MoboPlayer when I pick a mkv movie.
is the .mkv file on your phone, or on your home network server?
I need to see stuff on my home network server..
thanks
mkv is on my WDTV Live player. I'm streaming DLNA from the WDTV Live.
I was trying to stream with SMB to the Evo 3D but couldn't get it to work without it downloading the whole movie before it plays. My Archos 101 have no issue streaming 720p mkv through SMB.

I wish I could get Imedia to see my NAS drives, where I keep all my media stuff..
I used to use a program called Orb to stream stuff from my NAS boxes to my phone, and it worked like a charm, via 3/4g and wifi..unfortunately, they never updated the program to work with 2.3...
Oh well, I guess I will keep looking. thanks for your suggestions!
I'm still looking for a solution to stream 3g/4g. Currently I can only stream on the LAN. Let me know if you find something.
its not DLNA, but you might try subsonic

[Q] Streaming MKV files from Windows Media Centre to Xperia Z tablet

Hi,
Can anyone help with this one?
I've got a few video files in MKV format, which play fine if they are stored on the tablet (SGP311) or on the Micro SD card.
However, when I try to stream MKV files from my Windows Media Center (windows 7) library, I get the message "Cannot Show media. File format not supported"
MP4 files stream ok from the same location, so I'm confused.
I'm using the stock player. I have downloaded MXPlayer, but not worked out how to stream from WMC with that yet.
Can anyone explain why or suggest a solution before I convert the videos over to MP4 format?
thanks
Andy
Are yuou playing it right from wmc? If so, i think its in the software because it has to play within..
If you want to play the video from the location folder you can try gomplayer it plays a lot of video formats (even an mp3 file).. Currently using.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I'm trying to stream it from the HDD on the wmc PC straight to the tablet.
I've found something now which works well and seems to play everything. Using ES file explorer and mx player as described here.
http://apcmag.com/how-to-stream-video-to-an-android-device.htm
Use rockplayer. Mxplayer does stream mkv though, you do need a filemanager though.

I use the DicePlayer, works well
I had the same problem and I didn't figure out what was that.
So I found a cool media streaming app called ArkMC. It supports all video formats. Works smoothly.
