Hello everyone,
I want to simplify all those who want to install Windows Developer Phone Tools on Windows XP:
1) download the complete package at the official site
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=201927
2) extract the downloaded package to a folder
3) copy and overwrite the file attached to the folder where you extracted the package

4) run the batch file Install ...

I have used this method couple of times and I confirm it working on XP except you can not run emulator, that is not required in our case either I guess.
The problem is that I still could not unlock WP7. It stucks at Chevron unlocker stage. The same problem has been reported by almost all users here. I haven't witnessed anyone unlocking WP7 through WIndows XP machine.

I finally got it to install on XP!
Here's what I did,
Download the .iso file (it's at the bottom of the page) :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=04704acf-a63a-4f97-952c-8b51b34b00ce
After, make a new folder on your desktop and extract the ".iso" file into the folder.
Next, I grabbed the ".zip" file from here, : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9618980&postcount=81
Take the baseline.dat from the .zip file and replace it in the one with the extracted .iso files. Then just run setup.exe from the file. It should work! But make sure you have about 3 gb free from your hard drive. And emulator doesn't work, but I'm sure its fine if your not a developer.
Remember to hit the thanks button if it worked for you!

And with the same result too. Chevron opens but gives error.

SDK is useful in a sense that it atleast makes Chevron open on a XP machine. Without SDK, you can not even open Chevron.
But once you click unlock in Chevron, it always gives you error whatever you do.
I personally had to install WIndows 7 Ultimate on my laptop and then the whole process was like of 20 minutes hardly. No problems faced. The tutorials posted are fantastic and makes your life easy.
Exploring unlocked and activated WP7 on HD2
So we have to purchase Windows 7 and delete everything?
I do not have money to do this...I hope the devs find a way.
I LOVE windows phone even in the sad state mine is in. I have a Zune HD, and I haven't used it since WP7 came onto my HD2...If I could access the marketplace, I'd love it...guess I'll have to download it (windows 7) tonight...
i had the chevron unlocker working with XP SP3. I'll try it again in a bit to verify it again. will let you all know.
I checked and double checked. My phone was already unlocked, so i performed a Re-lock.
Ofcourse, I couldn't get it unlocked again under XP. Having probs now as well with Win7. Scratching my head now. lol

Emulator will never work on XP nor its required for you as you are willing to deploy things on actual device i.e. your HD2. In short, forget emulator.
For DotNet 4 issue, try installing it seperately.
great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I am reading this right, having the SDK installed on XP is beneficial regardless if Chevron works or not. This is how I see the events playing out:
Use a Wiindows 7 Machine to do the unlocking process with Chevron
Use the XP machine to do the side-loading of applications.
Once the Chevron process is complete, there should be no need for a Windows 7 based machine, as the app loading will work fine from XP.
Am I correct with how I laid that out? I ask because my main workstation is an XP machine. I have 2 Windows 7 machines (my HTPC and my laptop are both Win7); the HTPC is buried under/behind the TV and does not have easily accessible USB ports, and the laptop has a small (17") screen and I can barely see what I am doing on it, which makes it a non-feasible option.
Now, if I were to use the laptop for a few minutes to do the unlocking with Chevron, I should (in theory) be able to perform all of the other options on my XP machine...I hop I am correct with that assumption, as it will be the best way for me to go about it.

It has nothing to do with the ROM itself, but with the version of the RUU. HTC simply didn't made a VistaRUU for the (older) Prophet-model. The (newer) Trinity does have a VistaRUU, that's why there are two versions. Unfortunally the RUU's are model-specific, so we can't exchange them (tried it already ofcourse )
So, some genius has to modify a VistaRUU for use with the Prophet (or the other way around). BTW I do have one RUU that does work with Vista, but it isn't able to read any other nk.nbf then the one it came with.
ahhh, now i get it .. thanks for the explanation
now i'm looking for a genius he gets it to work

Virtual Pc don't emulate the USB connection.
I myself did create a second bootpartition on my PC with XP. So, now when I startup, I can choose between my main OS (Vista) or the second one (XP).
It is called dualboot. It is a bit of a hassle to set up if Vista is already installed, but the advantage is that XP runs native, without any emulation.
Here it is described very punctual: http://www.anichillus.net/index.php?PHPSESSID=rho4r4287rcptee39sv57rm0f3&topic=26.msg43#msg43

I have ruined my new VISTA notebook, cos I tried to make dualboot OS. Now it goes to Service Center.. Eventhough I just buy for 3 days..
And it won't cover buy warranty..****..
Better to run everything under XP actually.

I'm using Vista ultimate edition and never had a problem upgrading my JAMin using old or new method! I even made HardSPL with vista just replace and edit .bat file! (why should i install another windows using virtual machine!!!)
This is the one...
Vista upgrade guide should be followed (once) to be able to use the vista_RUU
Guide vailable here:

or here (same as above):

IF you only wants The vista-RUU:-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=60781&d=1197014861
All what you have to do is to replace the .nbf file and upgrade!
Note: I have been using this since long time and never had problem upgrading my prophet (G3) in windows vista in any matter!
sorry to hear that man... hopefully next time it's ok
i use VMware Workstation, this program has full usb support and i have had no problems with it. just make sure you install the vmtools and dont plug in your phone until you have loaded XP fully and have it full screen.
this i found is the best way for things to happen (updates etc). also usful for bios updates since VISTA doesn't work fully yet

You are right, this is a way to get things going with Vista. The downgrade of the USB drivers makes it possible to flash "traditional", I'm doing that succesfully from April last year. But to use a RUU, is a different cup of tea.
The VistaRUU you use is for G3 only.... you've guessed, my device is G4....

Yep, that method works, but the problem is the RUU itself. Allthough you have the right drivers after this procedure, only a modified G3 RUU will be able to flash on Vista.
The traditional way of flashing using os.nb with the Upgrade.bat works though.
Works
The on above does work, but I tend to use ShellTool more often.

vmware
A virtual machine loaded with XP is the best option for flashing comfortably, if you (unfortunatelly poor you) have vista on your pc.
VMware makes it simple and fully functional.

In Vmware menus , there's a 'removable device' option to allow you plug in usb devices . After you activate the function from the menu , your phone will be disconnected from Vista and recognized by the OS you installed in Vmware . Then , you can operate in the VM updating , synchronizing , everything as usual .
In addition to the previous advice, you must install ActiveSync under your VM-XP. You must look at it as a seperate computer, it needs to have all the software and drivers to perform.
Hi,
I know there have been threads on this before but largely they just mention installing the Vista 64 bit drivers (done that). I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with the Vista 64 bit drivers and MCR 2.8 (although I was on stock and 2.2 with the same problem). HTC Sync on the phone just will not find it on the PC. I can mount the SD card with no trouble, just problems with Sync.
Any suggestions as to what I can do? Please feel free to direct me to another thread that I've missed so long as it's not just about the drivers.

In addition to HTC sync and the drivers, have you tried getting the android sdk? I know that I had issues with HTC sync finding my phone as well when syncing it to Win7 x64, so try following this guide here, it might allow HTC sync to view the phone properly. The guide teaches you how to setup adb-usb drivers which might trigger the application to know that your phone is there.
I had the same problem, turns out one of the task killer apps that I had been using had killed the sync process. Might be a plan to check if the same has happend to you.
Florida.
Hi Princedwi and Florida,
Thanks for the replies. I'm confident that my sync process is still running as I've tried numerous reboots of phone and PC so the task killer wouldn't have had chance to stop the process. However I will give it a go just to make sure.
Regarding the SDK, I'll try that when I get home. I used to have the SDK installed but then I did a re-install of windows and haven't bothered installing the sdk yet. May well work, I'll let you know.

Hi,

2.0.18 is out now... should be W7 compatible -
http://www.htc.com/europe/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=847&news_id=471
I had to install the Vista 64 bits drivers twice to get them working properly. The first time my hero appeared as "HTC Hero ADB". Rebooted, connected to USB, opened notifier, selected PC-Sync and reinstalled drivers (always choosing the folder where HTC should be leaving their drivers). This second time it appeared as "MY HTC" and it worked fine then. So just try again until you see the magic word "My HTC".

Because from android 1.6 setup process has changed in SDK. Normally it opens a windows from where you can add the version of android SDK you want and install the driver.

Same problem here with windows 7 64bit. Not sure if it's related to java environnement installed (For example when i installed JRE on my win7 64 the JAVA_HOME env variable was not set, i had to do it manually).

Nope for now but if I found the problem be sure i'll post it here.
Ok I found the solution. My problem is that I've installed only the JRE but according to the requirements (developer.android.com/intl/fr/sdk/requirements.html) we need the JDK also.
So i've uninstalled the JRE 1.6 (64bit) I had, and installed the JDK 1.6 (32bit as i saw many ppl having problem with 64bit and android SDK). And it worked, I run againg the "SDK Setup.exe" and it opened the windows as intended.
I had the same problem, even with 2.0.18. what I did was install HTC Sync 2.0.18 (with the drivers copied in Program Files\HTC\HTC Driver\Vista_x64). then go to device manager, ADB interface, update driver, browse for a list of compatible software and choose My HTC.
after rooting it (although I'm not sure this is the cause) it happened now and then to fail to get recognized by the computer so I followed the same steps to update the drivers to My HTC.
I can't install HTC Sync 2.0.18, it gives an error about some resource file not found and closes. I tried on two different computers with the same result. Anyway 2.0.8 works fine here after I reinstalled the 64 bits driver until it was detected as "My HTC".
the same for me.
after update to version 2.0.18 my win7 64bit didnt find my phone anymore...

RSD Lite Win 7 x64 Fix
Since RSD Lite no longer comes with an EXE and therefore installing in compatibilty mode is not longer an option, I spent some time researching and banging my head against my desk in frustration that it wouldn't install. In a past job, I was a Windows Developer. When RSD Lite installs and reaches the error, it is in the Commit Stage - Therefore, all the installation (save for the creation of icons and other post-installation scripts) has been done.
All this to say, when you see the Error 2738, Don't click "OK" right away. Navigate to the installation directory, Copy all the files and paste them to a different directory in the Program Files (x86) directory. Then click OK.
Create a shortcut to the SDL.exe file (on your desktop, start menu, wherever you like) and edit the compatibility of the shortcut to always run as administrator.
Double-click your new shortcut et voilà! RSD Lite actually works on Windows 7 when it previously did not.
I have done and tested with RSD Lite 5.6 and 5.7
Interesting. I wonder why this is happening to some folks? I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and every version of RSD lite has always installed flawlessly for me.
Good looking out jduke882 - But, in researching Error 2738 I found that it has to deal with not being able to access VBScript run time for custom action. So, all the folks that cannot install RSD Lite - is your VBScript runtime working?
More info here: http://www.jakeludington.com/window...cess_vbscript_run_time_for_custom_action.html
And M$ even created a HotFix for it, see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...time-for/1a4499ae-8bc1-4534-9c6f-4d399ac70d9a
FWIW: Those of you on x64 OSs could not use the fix posted by supermerkin b/c that was 32bit specific. The command to be entered is as follows:
Code:
reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" /f
The 64bit machines need that Wow6432Node path inserted in order to delete the correct key.
Also, as noted in the first link, re-registering the vbscript.dll to the system is also needed:
Code:
c:\windows\syswow64\regsvr32 vbscript.dll
.
For people with custom Windows installations (i.e. not C this command will always work, regardless of where windows is installed:
Code:
%windir%\syswow64\regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Thanks. You help me to get install RSD Lite5.7 in my PC Win XP 32bits and I flashed my wife`s motorola XT321 to get fastboot using Alin method (droidevelopers) and after I got root access using leos0 and pbruck guide.
I've been unable to install the ADB drivers for the Nook Tablet on Windows 8. I get as far as browsing to the folder which contains the inf file after clicking on Have Disk... and I get a message saying Windows could not find driver software for your device. I've tried on two different computers.
Has anyone had any luck installing the ADB drivers for the NT? I'm running Windows 8 RTM.
question: why would you have windows 8...
whatever
If I am correct I heard you need to disable drivers signature checking by Windows (google it, shouldn't be hard) and then it works like 7.
get you started:

Because many people are allowed to have it for beta testing as well as corporate enterprise testing. It isn't pirated if that is the reason for the why followed by the whatever.
my bad homie, wasn't accusing you of nothing
but my reply did it work?
(Shrug) I didn't post with the problem I was just addressing what seemed like a possible disgust emotion brewing for having pirated software. Just wanted to set the record straight for those not in the know about Win 8's release status.
