[Q] Help with USB Tethering - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I am using FroydVillain 1.7.2 ROM with Flykernel 12 on my HTC Hero. Everything works fine except one issue that I came across lately. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
I was trying to use the native USB tethering. As I understand, HTC Sync is required for this to work, so I downloaded the latest version (3.0.5511) from HTC site. When I choose USB tethering on phone, Device manager shows 'Android Phone'. Upon googling, I realized that HTC Remote NDIS Based device driver required for this feature to work. So I manually tried updating the driver and pointing to path C:\Prog Files\HTC\Driver\Vista_x86\. Windows detects the driver correctly, but gives me an error "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service" (screenshot attached). I also noticed that HTC Sync does not detect my phone. I do not get a 'Synchronize' option on my phone either. Wifi tethering works fine. Hope someone here can help me out.
Thanks in advance!

Htc sync works only with sense roms. You don't have that, so it shouldnt work

Thanks for your reply.
So does that mean I won't be able to use USB tethering??? I am not much concerned about using HTC Sync.
Thanks.

Tethering included?

Just got a brand new "G2 Touch" from T-mobile, and found under:
Settings -> Wirless -> "Mobile Netzwerkfreigabe(aka Tethering?)"
If i check the box it deactivates the usb mass storage and a new device appears. Windows hasn't got drivers for this device. Someone any ideas, how to use this feature?
this post did it for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4246332&postcount=20
there's also a thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535404
the error on the phone is not entirely clear - it says drivers are on the SD card. According to HTC support, they are embedded in the HTCSync app, which I thought was just for Outlook syncing. Put it back into USB card mode, run the htcsync setup from the SD card, and try again
it worked for me in vista (i'd already installed the htcsync app on that machine so I don't know if the drivers were already part of vista or if the app installed them)
On my UK T-mobile HTC Hero I can confirm that the 'Tethering' option is there in Wireless>Settings, buried at the bottom as 'Mobile Network sharing'
It appears to work when you have the HTC Sync software installed on Windows, as described...
Now here's the £1million question.. anyone have any idea how to get a Tether enabled Hero to talk to Linux?
the windows drivers from htcsync are in the SDK
perhaps there are some linux ones in there also?
Just tested with gentoo, works with the normal rndis driver compiled in!
Thats perfect !
So I think it should work "out of the box" with the most Linux Distributions.
Just plugv in, and do an dhcp request on usb0 or usb1
yeah... <blush> I just tried this on my openSUSE 11.1 laptop and it worked strait away as USB0, no drivers, no installation, no problem....
I really should have tried it before posting!
And yet another bit of hardware that works more easily with Linux than Windows! ;-)
Interestingly, the Tethering isn't limited to the 'Mobile Networking' (aka 3G/HSDPA) connection.
If you have Wifi configured on your Hero, that is the connection the Tether will use, pretty nice if you want to Wifi-enable any device and save on your data limits.
yeah... when I was testing I got rather confused briefly as to why my computer still had its usual internet IP even though I'd disabled its network card (because it was connecting to the router via the phone's wireless)
slightly puzzingly, disabling mobile data disables the tethering option (even if it's going to end up using the wireless anyway). i'm sure there'll be someone with that specific use-case. But it's not me, so I'm happy

HTC Hero as mobile internet for computer?

Fast questin:
A friend has a HTC Touch HD whick he can use as a mobile internet connection for his computer using the 3G in the phone and a USB cable.
Is the possible with the Hero?
If not, would it be possible to make a app for that? I mean, the whole phone is opensource, so it should be possible?
It's called tethering - it's built into Hero, though I believe you have to use HTC Sync on your PC.
Regards,
Dave
To sync it to PC, do i need any software or is it plug and play?
Never acculy synced my hero to my PC since i rl dont need to when i have andorid marketplace
Do i need any software on my computer to sync the Hero?
*woops, doubble post >.<*
Yes hero can be used as a modem, you need to instal HTC Synch on the pc first, then plug phone in and drivers will be installed via htc synch. I find after doing it on a few boxes you need to reboot the pc before the phone will give an IP address to pc at this initial instal. In settings/wireless controls on hero you need to tick mobile network sharing - this becomes available to tick when plugged to pc. Note there is a newer version of HTC Synch on the HTC web site than the one supplied on the hero's memory card - both worked for me.
To Synch - yes you need HTC Synch installed.
If you are using MoDaCo's custom rom you can use an app called Wireless Tether which lets you tether through wifi/bluetooth,so no need for a usb cable.
Wow, thanks for all the answears
cool, tethering over bluetooth
anyone tried this on linux? I start like feeling to flash that rom after all. HTC's ten days take soooo long...

I just wanted to ask the same question. i'm a linux user and wanted to share internet with my laptop.
it was hard to get it working with WM (i never got it working)
If you install the Android SDK you get a tool called "adb" which has this in its -help output:
Code:
networking:
adb ppp <tty> [parameters] - Run PPP over USB.
Note: you should not automatically start a PDP connection.
<tty> refers to the tty for PPP stream. Eg. dev:/dev/omap_csmi_tty1
[parameters] - Eg. defaultroute debug dump local notty usepeerdns
So it might be possible, but I don't know how exactly.
I did thetering over bluetooth and infrared with my touch dual wm device and ubuntu laptop. Worked very nice. I know it is easy over usb, but given the bluetooth support in Android, i doubt it will work over bt.
Hmm, iv'e installed HTC Sync (the version that is on HTC.com/support) but when i try to sync the phone to my laptop my phone says it didnt fint HTC Sync on windows... even though its insalled and opened on my computer...
What to do?

HTC Sync does not allow you to use the Hero as a modem. HTC Sync is used to sync Contacts to Outlook or Windows Address Book! I got this information from the HTC Sync user guide downloaded from the HTC website.
To use the Hero as a modem, you must use PDANet or root your phone and use some other tethering application.
So then there is no way I can use my Hero as a modem?
Since I dont want to root my phone and PDANet is not free(I live in sweden and can not buy apps yet)
Please see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544352. Apparently it works with HTC Sync on Windows and it works with the standard rndis driver on Linux.
The Windows/HTCSync method is also mentioned in the manual that came on the /sdcard of my G2 Touch (chapter 6.7, "Verwendung des Telefons als Modem" (i.e. tethering)). See also the screenshots on http://blog.brightpointuk.co.uk/using-htc-hero-usb-modem.

Wrong I'm afraid! Hero has tethering out of the box and *does* use HTC Sync, albeit just to install NDIS driver. (see http://www.htc.com/uk/faqs.aspx?p_id=283&cat=0&id=108516&f=t )
There is no requirement to install any other tethering app, or root your phone, though you will need to do this if you wish to tether via WiFi or Bluetooth.

Dave

did anyone actually succeed in this?
HI,
I still have not been able to tether between my ubuntu laptop and my rooted hero without a cable. I have tried using bluetooth with wifitether and with wifi ad-hoc network, but none work.
Is it even possible to pair a hero with ubuntu?

[Q] No Wifi Hotspot

Hey i was wondering if anybody else is having this problem with the wifi hotspot and usb tethering. I am running windows mobile rom with radio 2.14. I am running Mdeejay_evo sense v1.0 warm. But pretty much every android build i put on there I am unable to get the wifi hotspot or usb tethering to work. Just seeing if anybody can help. Right now I am just having to reboot the phone into WM to use the usb tethering.
well u know winmo roms have wireless tether too right?
yes im having that problem also was waiting for this thread didnt want to make one
works for me and im on mdeejay froyo hd 3.3a
The only ROM that i know of that Wi-Fi tethering is working on is Mdeejay's & Darkstone's Desire HDs ROMs.
I can confirm Hypderdroid 1.6 works too
same here...
Yea I'm on mdeejay evo 1.6 and wifi tehtering not working either. It'll connect, but I won't get any traffic.
i am experiencing the same problems with about every build. i found one build which is core droid version 1.1 that actually worked then i updated to version 1.2 and stoped working. but i still have yet to find a build in which everything works.
mad props to the devs and everybody at xda for making android on hd2 possible.
any other builds that have wifi working please let us know, thanks!!
I am using Bangsters 1.3a and after running the script he provided a link to I have no problem with WiFi tethering... honestly have not used the USB tether
I have FroyoStone Sense v3.1 and Wifi tethering works for me.
keep in mind that after you connect ur computer to ur wifi hotspot, it can take a minute or two for windows to obtain internet access through ur device.
for me, it usually takes about a minute.
I try NexusHD2-FRG83_V1.1_(Froyo 2.2.1) and its works but the internet dont work so well its on and off..
If there is no internet on your pc after connection try add the dns 8.8.8.8 manually on TCP/IP.

FOR WIFI TETHERING:
Renew the ip address your pc AFTER its connected to hd2 and complains about no internet connection (no traffic) You can do this by entering the command
ipconfig /renew
to start menu or cmd screen. (Don't repair wireless connection, wait till it gives up)
FOR USB TETHERING:
Normally windows vista/7 shouldn't need driver, but sometimes it does. (Mostly because of droid explorer) So when you make usb tethering, if your phone is just listed as Android Phone in your device manager. Download and install tetherxp.inf for Android Phone in device manager. Click update driver in device manager for android phone and browse to folder that contains tetherxp.inf file. (This works for vista/7 too)
Download: http://www.android.com/drivers/tetherxp.inf
I can confirm that wifi AND usb tethering works with all builds I have tried that does not give error while enabling it. But I almost always need to renew my ip. (and it automatically updates dns settings too) I think DHCP is late for many builds and ip request times out in pc.
I remember, one time I needed to disable WPA, enable then disable tethering and reenable WPA and it worked. IP renewal always works. Give feedback for your experience please. (Whether these instructions worked or not)
I made it work with nexus, desire, desire hd, desire z and evo builds. I was usually using hastarin kernels.
Thanks for your help but I kerosene getting a response that's says "No operation can be performed on local area connection while it has itsunami media disconnected."

[Q] Need help with internet pass through feature

I have tried to connect my desire x to the internet from my pc with the internet pass through feature. I have installed HTC Sync (which is a terrible application!!!)
Whenever i connect my phone in the internet pass through mode, a new unidentified public network appears in the notification area which does not have access to the internet.
HTC Sync never detects my device whatsoever.
I have seen in Task Manager that the passthruserver service and the syncmanager service is running fine. Even in Device Manager, i see the network adapter of HTC running properly. Even after the phone gets connected, i cannot browse the net from my phone.
Does anyone have any idea how to solve the problem?
Hello
I had a similar issue after upgrading to the official 4.1.1 update on my one X. before updating I was able to have this feature working very
good. For your knowledge I have searched on many forums for solutions and tried many of them but no results although I have installed the latest version of HTC Sync manager but did solve the problem.
Please need help in this issue if you can find anything let me know.
Good Luck

HTC M8 & M9 USB-tethering malfunction.

Hey guys, this is my first post here as I give up googling anymore.
I have these two phones as stated in the topic, and I have to use USB-tethering to get internet connection on my desktop. As I'm writing this, it works perfectly fine... However, that's the first time in a week.
I've noticed on networks and sharing center that it uses a new connection for each time I plug in the phone. Meaning, I'm currently on "Home-network 57" etc. I can see I have at least 4 versions of HTC Remote NDIS based Device. Currently I'm on
HTC Remote NDIS based Device#2 (Network 58). However, I can't see the other versions simultaneously.
Using a Samsung Galaxy S3-S5 this all works perfectly fine.
I've enabled USB-debugging on both my phones. I'm using W10, previously I had the exact same problem with the same HTC phones on W7. I formatted, unable to find a solution and now I'm experiencing the same issues on W10.
I think this is as simple as deleting all the networks created each time I plug in a phone, but how the F do I do that?!
Thanks for the help guys! : )
