Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S Odin3 Problem - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok, apparently i need this broken down to me. i got to the download screen on my phone. i downloaded the recommended files, when i ran Odin3 as administrator, i checked the PDA box, and clicked on the PIT button to get to the PIT file..
the problem i'm having is figuring out exactly what file, and where exactly is located for the PDA box.
if i remember correctly, i'm doing everything right. the only problem is figuring out which file is the PDA file?
help?
[NOTE: i understand people have posted about bricked phones and whatnot. but i really did try looking for a solution to this, and fell short. help will be appreciated, and i will be standing by for an answer. i'm off work now, and i NEED my phone to work again. lol]

now i have a new problem. there's a cell phone, computer, and a nasty little triangle with an explanation mark in the middle.
man, i need some help. seriously.

great, just when i thought things could not possibly get any worse...
i used Odin3.. again. this time i only selected the PIT file and nothing else. everything went fine, it even said that my phone reset correctly.
now it's a black screen, and it won't power on. at all. nothing, no power.
man, someone please help me.
[EDIT: K, i placed my phone on the charger, still a black screen, but there's a real faint light surrounding it. so it DOES get power, it's just a black screen. any ideas anyone?]

That seems pretty nasty. The PDA box is where your tarred ROM goes. The only ROMs I know of like this are stock ones, not the kinds you find in the forums normally. Once you track down one of those, try Odining again. To get into download mode, try unplugging it, taking the battery out, plugging it into a computer via USB, and holding down both volume buttons while putting the battery in. That always seems to work for me. Put the pit and PDA files in their respective spots in Odin and flash away. It has always worked for me.

not working.
this sucks...

Your phone is NOT dead. Here is what you do..
1. remove battery,SIM, and external SD card from phone.
2. connect USB cord to PC...NOT to phone...Yet.
3.Now make sure you have Odin up and running
---PIT file goes in "PIT"
---MODEM Files (modem.bin) go in "Phone"
---Packaged ROM files (T959JI6.TAR, or T959JI6.tar.md5, for example) Go into the PDA Box
---DO NOT EVER check the re-partition box unless directed by a TRUSTED SENIOR forum member..So, since it's ME DON'T check it!
4.NOW Hold Vol up/Down on your phone.. DO NOT hold the power button.
5. Continue to hold vol up/down, plug in the USB cord to your phone.
6. Insert the battery into your phone.
7. If done correctly , you should now be in download mode. ODIN should show a "COM" port, and say "Added" in the status box. If it doesnt, start over from step 4. Good Luck!

Prior to reading your post it. odin would only get stuck in file analysis.
but by opening the program and setting the files prior to connecting the phone it was able to run the firmware update thanks.

I'm doing the same steps, however I'm getting a 'wipe error' when the phone starts up in recovery mode. Anyone else had this problem?

You may have tried this but these are the steps that eventually worked for me.
1. Put your phone in download mode by plugging it in and then holding Vol Up+Down and Power. As SOON as the screen goes black release power but NOT Vol Up+Down.
2. Launch Odin
3. Unplug your phone.
4. Load the pit and pda files into odin.
5. Plug your phone back in. You should now see one of the small blocks turn yellow and show you the com port. If not, something is wrong with your drivers.
6. Click start. If it flashes, great. If it hangs at File analasys then repeat 1-5.
6a. If Odin hangs at cache.rfs then move on to 6b.
6b. Unplug your phone (Odin will say it was removed) and remove the battery. DO NOT SHUT DOWN ODIN!!!!!!
6c. Put the battery back in and plug it back into your computer and put it back into download mode using step 1.
6d. Press start on Odin and it should now flash.
Again, this worked for me, it may have been a fluke and I'm not willing to try it again. Good luck!!!
Does not boot!
What if the phone does not boot. All happened after I tried to flash the kernel back to the stock one. USB plugged in, battery is fully charged- still no sign of life. Any solution for that? No recover or download mode!

I have the right drivers i think because it does recognize my phone. im just so confused with this rar tar stuff. I would pay someone 20 dollars through paypal if they can walk me through this.

What have you done to put it in download mode? You should power off your phone, plug it into your computer. It should then enter the charge mode where you see a picture of your battery being charged (or if you were like me and screwed up somewhere you may see a little picture of a phone, computer and yellow triangle in between them). If you get either of those then press and hold all three VOL up, VOL down and power. AS SOON AS the screen goes black release ONLY Power and it should go into download mode.
If you plug your phone into your computer (powered off) and nothing happens then you just be bricked. Call TMO and play dumb and hopefully get a replacement.
Ok,
The_Chrome_Coyote really helped me!!!! Thank you so much and im back up and running. There was something missing from the original tutorial, not that we should be spoon fed but I didn't have the WinRAR program on my pc and didn't know I needed to extract anything. I was looking for exe. for it to be a program and just open it. It's a little more complicated than that. I added my additions in BOLD
The_Chrome_Coyote's Original post to me:
Odin isnt that hard, its just REALLY picky about working.
Firstly you need to download the Samsung drivers for your OS which can be found:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
added:
Second you need to make sure you download WinRAR x86 (32 bit) 3.93 (google it and you should be able to get it) otherwise if your pc doesn't have a program to recognize rar and tar files, you are out of luck.
then read this thread from JAC:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
1. Now, Extract ODIN from its .rar and place the .exe on your desktop
2. Extract the .pit file from its.rar and place that on your desktop
3. Place the JFD .tar file on your desktop but DO NOT EXTRACT
Now you can use ODIN
4. Start ODIN Odin3. [Android + SLP], through ODIN select the .pit file
5. Hit "PDA" button, and through ODIN select the .tar file
6. Plug your TURNED OFF PHONE into the USB cable
7. Wait for the Battery/ charging indicator to start
8. HOLD VOL UP+ VOL DOWN+ POWER, as soon as the screen goes black RELEASE POWER, and continue to HOLD VOL UP+ VOL DOWN Until it enters download mode. Which should happen quickly and looks like a men at work highway sign.
9. If a COM port has turned Yellow in ODIN, then the device has been recognized. If it hasnt, unplug and plug your phone back in.
10. Dont select any options other than whats set at default.
11. Hit Start and be patient, takes me maybe 5 minutes to get back up and running.
NOTE: If you do not see a blue progress bar on the phone's screen after a minute;
11a. Turn your phone off by pulling the battery.
11b. CLOSE ODIN
11c. Start at step 4 again.
ODIN needs to be open and ready to flash before the phone is plugged in, in my experience. Its very picking about this, and not everyone has this issue, but I did and following all these steps helped me flash my phone more times than I can count the other day haha.
Hope this helped! and your $20, donate it to Wes, JAC, or Eugene to keep them making great stuff for our phone.

Same thing happened to mine when i tried odin. Now all i get sometime when it come on. are 7 rows of text that seems to be a code on screen in amber. Ishipped back 2 samsung. Since t-mobile won't take it after 14 days.
ok I screwed up guys.
I installed ROM manager from the market, flashed clockwork, it asked me if I wanted to partition and I said yes.
Now I just get a black screen at boot. I've managed to run odin and it says success. But I still just get a black screen after boot.
Little help?
I do have to say that if YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO EXTRACT A COMPRESSED FILE (RAR, ZIP,ETC) YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS FLASHING YOU'RE PHONE!! Odin or otherwise.
I am not being mean but at least stick to update.zip files flashed through recovery and make sure you read reviews of other users first, and understand the instructions completely.

I was using clockwork recovery installed through an update.zip file on my sd card. everything was working fine for about a day and then when i powered my phone off the next day and powered it back on it would not boot up past the Galaxy S screen. it goes to the Galaxy S screen and then goes blank but my hard keys stay lit up while my lcd is completely blank. I tried using the Odin method described in this thread and it seemed like it was going to work but i still cannot get past the boot screen. please help. willing to donate if needed

If you can see the samsung logo you are fine. Load up recovery and try a full wipe first. If that fails then you can odin back to stock and root again.

1. If you have questions, there is a q and a forum for this device!!!!!!
2. THIS IS THE DEV PART OF THE FORUM. IE FOR DEVS POSTING STUFF FOR THE PHONE!!!!!
3. Learn how to Google. Not that hard. Example, you don't know what the *.rar extension is. GOOGLE IT!! Google knows everything.
4. If you don't have basic android or computer skills, don't try anything stupid. You do have a chance to brick your phone, even the pros like cyanogen have bricked their phones.
5. Don't offer cash for someone to fix your phone. Keep it in qna and some one will help you. Save your cash for the development that work hard on making these things work.
6. Can a mod please move this thread to qna.
7. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. USE THE SEARCH FINCTION BUILT ONTO THE FORUMS. IT WILL SAVE YOU TIME AND THEN YOU WILL NOT LOOK LIKE NOOBS THAT JUST GOT THIS PHONE BECAUSE IT HAD AVITAR IN THE BOX!!!!!

This is done at your own risk.
1. Download Eugenes 'Froyo that does not brick' file.
2. Extract the files.
3. Open Odin, plug in your phone, then put it into download mode.
4. load the PIT file in appropriate area.
5. load the .tar file in the PDA area.
6. DO NOT check 're-partition'.
7. Click start, let it finish. Your phone will load and reboot into stock recovery. It will error out again. DONT panic! This is what's supposed to happen.
8. Now, pull your battery.
9. Download the 'True stock 2.1 firmware for the vibrant'.
10. Extract the files.
11. Once again, open Odin, plug in your phone, put into download mode.
12. Load the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area.
13. THIS TIME you want to check the 're-partition' box.
14. Now click start, let it finish, and this time your phone will load up just fine! BAM!
im willing to try that ^^ but i can get into download mode i tried every single possible way i been trying for 5 hours and i cant get into download
So, I'll be the first to say it then, please, in the future, post this in the appropriate thread. The Q&A or even General would be more appropriate. ::sigh::
Now with that, have you tried booting into Download mode through ADB?
sorry for putting it in this section, i didnt realize, yes i tried to use ADB since odin and my computer recognizes the phone while the phone is in the vibrant screen and no it wont work through ADB =(
You say your computer recognizes the device. So when you type "adb devices", it displays your device? If so, type "adb reboot download" and you're golden. Otherwise, the method that always worked for me to get into Download mode was:
1) Unplug from USB cable.
2) Power down device and remove battery
3) Hold Vol - and Power simultaneously
4) Insert battery while holding down the above keys.
Post back results.

If you look couple threads down, you'll see my thread, and I am having the same problem. Slightly different cause, but of the same nature, and the exact same problem. I have not had any real help yet, but I have been scouring the forums here. And I think the only option, if none of the button combinations work, as they don't seem to for me, and you're getting a complete brick, is perhaps the usb jig resistor method... but even that I don't think is 100% because some of the people who created the guides on how to make the jig resistor said it only worked for softbrick, not total brick like our cases. Unless someone can verify otherwise...
Thanks for the reply man i don't know what to do man i spent $400 0n this phone there must be a way but no luck on google either

Try this. Take your sim card, microsd and battery out. Leave battery out for a few minutes.
Open odin and load with the 512 pit and Jfd tar.
Plug one end of usb cable into computer only
take your vibrant with everything still out of it
hold down both vol buttons (vol up and down) and never let go
do not touch power
while holding down both volume buttons plug in your usb cable into the phone with the other end previously in the computer...do all this while holding down volume buttons and dont let go
now grab your battery with your free hand and while still holding down the vol buttons now plug in your battery
if all goes well your.phone should go into download mode at which pt you can let go of volume buttons.
If this doesnt work you can maybe try the jig if your bootloader is intact
also since you were messing with voodoo you might need to first flash eugenes froyo tbat doesnt brick...im not too sure on this so ask around and look it up.
You need this first of all (Froyo that does not brick)

Don't forget to thank :]
iv'e tryied that i read somewhere that it's a hard brick
Then try accessing download mode by first, removing the sd card, sim, and battery, second, plugging in the usb cable, third, holding down the two buttons on the side of the phone, and finally, while holding down those two buttons, inserting the battery.
I havee tried that mothod many times no luck just a blank screen
Then commit a fraud and send it back to T-Mobile saying it suddenly stopped working.
Or if you prefer a wild card you can use a JIG
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
Edit: Never mind it will not work for you. Sorry :/
Edit 2: The phone does not even turn the buttons on??
no nothing turns on at all no power but when i put it to charge it heats up but no battery screen
Yea, take it to T-Mobile and get it replaced. I got mine switched at T-Mobile once, and it would only boot to the custom Nexus animation....the lady still swapped it out. It all depends on the rep, if they won't switch it, go to a different location. Eventually you'll find someone.
i don't think thats possible seeing as im in Canada bought it off ebay
take it to a phone expert. he will flash a bootloader to your phone.

Bricked my Vibrant.. Can you help?

I'm not sure where to go for help or what to do next, so I'm posting on here (I've read a lot of great stuff on here in the past and now!). So, here's the story:
Tmobile came out with their 2.2 update and I decided to get on the band wagon and update my phone. What I didn't know after I started was that the stupid Samsung program doesn't want to work with Win7 x64 for whatever reason. So after my phone is sitting at 2% for two hours, I decide enough is enough and I disconnect it and reset it.
Now it's got the phone...!...PC picture on it (or black screen o' death).
I've tried just about every combination of the 3-button push to get it into the "download" screen I've been able to find on this forum and others, but all I ever get is the black screen of death. I've got Odin installed and it sees it when I connect the phone via the USB cable, but I still never get onto the download screen. I thought "what the hell" and tried to flash it anyways with Odin. The phone went to a completely purple screen. Reset and back to the Black screen of death.
So, there you have it. Is there anything else I can try? Or is my phone dead dead? I've read about some kind of micro-usb-resister thing I can try, but I'm not positive of being able to reproduce that item. I've also read a lot of terms and procedures that I'm very unfamiliar with. I'm a compelte noob when it comes to flashing and rooting my phone in fears of this exact problem. Now I'm facing it and need some help.
Thanks in advance for your help!
All I can tell you is keep trying to get into dl mode. It can be a real pain in the ass getting the three button to work sometimes. Good luck.

Pull everything out, battery, sim, microsd
Have ODIN open
Plug the usb into the PC
Plug usb into the Phone
Hold down ONLY the volume buttons
Put the battery in
Take your battery, sim, and everything out of your phone. Open odin. Connect usb cable to your computer only. Put your battery back in. Hold volume up + volume down. Connect usb to your phone. BOOM. You should be in download mode and recognized in odin.
Flash back to stock. If it's that messed up, you may have to use eugenes froyo that doesn't brick first. Search the stickies for that.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for posting! So, I tried both methods that you two mentioned, but I'm still only getting the phone..!..PC image. SD card, SIM, and Battery removed; connected USB, held down volumen buttons, and put in battery. Odin does appear to see the device attached (shows up "0:[COM5]" highlighted in yellow), however. Any other thoughts or perhaps there is something I'm missing?
Thanks again for your help!
Addition: I'm using Windows 7 Pro x64 if it matter..
Try odin on different pc. Or try different version of odin. Did you make sure you had proper Samsung drivers installed? 64 bit drivers. After opening odin make sure you have micro usb plugged to pc. Hold only the volume up and volume down buttons at the same time. Now plug usb to cell and that should do it.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Try it with the phone just powered off.
Pull the battery and unplug the USB from the phone.
Leave it plugged into the PC.
When you put the battery back in it should stay powered off.
Now with the battery back in, ODIN open, and your holding both of the volume buttons down, plug the phone in to the usb.
***Opps looks like rayvil already posted this method
It's working!!
So, when the xda forums went down last night and I didn't have much other guidance I decided "what's the worse that could happen if I keep on screwing with it?". Well, I could never get to the actual download screen no matter what buttons or combination of buttons I pressed. However, my computer would always recognize the device and so would Odin.
I downloaded a .PIT file, loaded it into Odin with the new 2.2 .TAR file. Then I hit "Start". To my amazement, the thing started to update the phone! Even while the phone was still on the "phone..!..PC" image. There was even the download/process bar showing up on the phone itself. 10-15 minutes later and the phone is up and running. The best part, though, was that all my settings and apps were still loaded and working! Odin must have taken over what samsung's piece-of-crap Kies program couldn't do and finished the upgrade process.
Thanks to everyone's input and this forum! It's a lifesaver!

[Q] Samsung S2 ICS rom suddenly stuck on load screen.

Please please please could anyone help!
About a month ago I upgraded to Ice cream sandwich (LP7) and then rooted my S2. All worked fine for 3 or 4 days and then suddenly it crashed for no reason. I suspect, but am not sure, that it did an automatic update. On rebooting it just stops at the Samsung S2 screen with a yellow triangle.
For the last few weeks i have been trying to find a fix, but am at my wits end now.
I have gone through the different solutions on your site but to no avail also where mine seems to be different is that I can get into boot mode and odin always says its successful. I have tried different pc and usb cable too just in case that was an issue
I can not get into Volume up mode, but i can get into boot mode with volume down. I have tried re loading a few different rom's and Odin says that the transfer was successful each time, however it is still stuck at the same place on reboot.
Tried reloading kernel and re partitioning, and again Odin said it went OK, but still stuck on start screen.
Tried using a jig and turned phone on, but it the phone just went to the start screen again.
If i could just get into reset mode, i could clear the memory, but this is not working either.
If anyone could help i would be very so grateful.
Thanks
Terry

You need to flash a ROM that will wipe your data at once.
Is your phone GT I9100 or GT I9100G?

That is a special .tar edition. You simply flash it just like a single file firmware (as PDA).
Good luck

I think your data partition is corrupt, but you can still get it solved.
You need to special .pit file. I'll post you the link (for the .pit file and instructions) very soon
Try this it worked for me

A Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100
A Windows PC
Your phone’s USB cable
7-Zip, WinRAR, or any other programs that can extract archive files
Handset USB drivers installed on the PC. You may install the drivers by installing Samsung Kies.
Enable USB Debugging on your handset.
Disable antivirus, firewall, and other security software. Also disable Samsung Kies and other software that accesses your phone. Such software can interfere with the procedure in this guide.

In the Odin window, click on the PDA button and select the I9100_CODE_I9100XXLQ5_CL753921_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5file. The file should show on the space beside the PDA button.
Click on the PHONE button and select MODEM_I9100XXLQ5_REV_02_CL1165929.tar.md5 file. The file should show on the space beside the Phone button.
Click on the CSC button and select the GT-I9100-MULTI-CSC-OXALQ5.tar.md5file. The file should show on the space beside the CSC button.
Don’t alter anything else in Odin. Leave everything else as is, except for adding the files mentioned in steps 7 to 9.
Click on the Start button in Odin to start flashing the firmware to your phone.
After the flashing completes, your phone will automatically reboot. You should be able to get a “PASS” message on the top left part of Odin.
NOTE: If you get a FAIL message or Odin gets stuck, disconnect your phone from the PC and close Odin. Remove the battery from your phone, re-insert it, and place your phone into Download Mode again. Open Odin and do the procedure starting from step 6.
Once you see the Samsung logo on your phone’s screen, you can safely disconnect your phone from the PC.

Try this I did and it worked to get mine booting after a bad update.
I messed around with it using several methods of getting it to boot into download mode until I finally got it to do it. I think I left it plugged into the USB, powered it down until I saw the charging screen, then I proceeded to play with the different ways to hold the buttons to get it to download mode. If you are persistent enough and read a little on booting methods to get bricked phone into download mode you will succed if not then your not for the world of trial and error... the main thing is do the first steps I said before until it works
1. Get into Download Mode (WITH THE PHONE PLUGGED IN) by following the steps below
*Turn off the phone until you get to the charging battery screen (keep in mind, your phone is currently PLUGGED IN)
*Press volume up and down, and power all at once.
*As soon as the screen turns black, release your power button.
2. Unplug phone from USB
or try
2. Remove everything from your phone (SD card, sim, battery).
3. Plug your phone into your computer WITHOUT the battery, as you have already taken it out in the last step.
4. Press and HOLD vol. up and vol. down.
5. As you are HOLDING these buttons, reattach your battery.
6. You should be in Download Mode.
7. Unplug phone from USB
any how try try try until it works
Once in download mode
Get your files together for your phone, and use Odin 1.85.
Plug into Odin and make sure it shows yellow and its added!
1. Now if your files have like 3 files and the exact .pit file for your phone if available.
I found mine here (Find yous stock firmware for your phone)
2. Click the PIT button and browse to your exact .pit file for your phone *It should now have added a check in the re-partition box under the options area of the Odin window. If not CHECK IT!
***If you don't have your .pit don't worry about this unless you suspect, or have a bad partition
3. If you have just 1 file just click the PDA button and load the file. If you have 3 then you will load the PDA file in PDA, the Modem file into PHONE, and the CSC file into CSC, there are way too many phones to link all the files so get you stuff together!
4. Now hit start.
5. When done and the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever... immediately unplug the battery from the phone to shut it down.
6. Now put it back in and start it in Upload mode by pressing Vol Up, Home at the same time then the Power button.
7. As soon as the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever let go of all buttons and using the Vol Up down Choose the Clear Cache option and go through and make sure you factory reset it if you can just for good measure.
8. Reboot
9. Now when the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever take out battery again to power off
10. Now put it back in and start it in Download mode by pressing Vol Down, Home at the same time then the Power button.
11. Once in download mode Hook up to Odin again and flash it with a root kernel for your phone. Do not ask me just find it. I did it took time but I got all the files together over several days of reading and collecting the correct ones.
12. When done and the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever... immediately unplug the battery from the phone to shut it down.
13. Now put it back in and start it in Upload mode by pressing Vol Up, Home at the same time then the Power button.
14. In most roots you will now have a advanced or mounting options and more options to use.
15. I cleared the Cache again, Cleared the Davilik Cache, Went into a option and actually mounted the cache formatted the Cache.
16. Use the option now to restart the phone...
And mine started up installed the apps and I am up and running, nice and smooth and no issues so far
I hope this helps out someone whos just about to go off the deep end, as I was there and patience and trial and error came up with this step by step way to recover mine. Thank me by hitting the little thumbs up THANKS button below this post.
And if your so happy your phone is up show your appreciation by buying me a Pepsi
