Dear Toshiba Folio 100 user.
I have created this thread to use it as a place it discuss all ideas, suggestions, problems, improvements about this device. In this way we can clean some of the general issues in the Dexter ROM thread.

Applications using the big screen ?
Looking for the best (screen usage) for email and calendar.
The email client in 1.0b is the default one for Android, looking at the email client in Samsung Tab its much better at using the big screen. Also the Folio is much better with white/light background as the "stock" email-client does not have.
Any pointer to a better app ?
The calendar app is much better and uses the screen much better.
Please write about your experiences with apps that works with big screens and works good on the Folio.

where do you find email client samsung???
Using Startup Manager, would it be possible to disable the phone service or would that result in a nuclear explosion or something like it? i mean, is android dependant on it one way or another, or would it be safe to disable it?
why foliomod ?
Hi to all
mhgonzalez great idea to create this "general" post.
I bought two folio for as Christmas gift, now they are hidden .. but, when I can, I do some test.
I never used android till now but I'm trying to understand why I should install foliomod. During my little usage I didn't find any bug, I only wasn't able to open a ebook (.epub) using the default reader (and I have put the file in the Books folder, anyway) but I suppose it's only because I need to improve my "knowledge".
But at the moment no bugs where find, all the apps installed work properly, wifi it's ok and, after I installed flash plug-in, browsing is ok too.
Not only but I was able to find the few app I saw googoling around the web.
What the folio mod make me able to do more than this ?

It can be downloaded from
www(dot)gunsforgeeks(dot)com/Email.apk
but it does NOT work on the Folio

[FIX] Background picture correctly scaled.
Download the app "Multipicture Live Wallpaper" from the market, enable it, and set the background image you want in the settings. YAY! HiRes background

That is one of my frustrations. The current email.apk on the folio, as well as the calender, look pretty terrible. In email, I can't even scroll through the different emails, everytime I have to open a message, read, close and open the next. Even on the (rather basic) email.apk on the Galaxy S I have small arrows on top with which I can scroll through to the next or previous message. The Galaxy-TAB email.apk doesn't work (well) on the SGS either.
Also, Samsung have another email-client from com7, I'can;t get that version installed ( a specific Samsung version with great HTML-email-presentation, but alas, missing scroll-arrows also). I'll check the com7-site to see if they have a more general Android version of their email-app and come back on that one.
So if anyone has an other email.apk which works on the Folio, let me know.

Dear Kakkio.
Modding the most important in my case was to be able to download application from Android Market, reason why the Toshiba Market is a joke. It depend on what will you do with the Folio. If it is only to browse internet and reading book, dont mod. If you need more, I recomend to mod.
dear mhgonzalez
tnx for your answer, in a few word you give me axactly the info I needed.
Mainly I'll use the tablet to read, listen music, watch video and browsing... but I like to "play" so, after a few, I'm sure I'll go to install foliomod...
In this moment I'm installing android emulator on my ubuntu in order to get a little bit more involved.

I quote a post from "pekka91166" from the dexter section because I think is perfect for this section ...
"...I agree with one of the earlier posts on Android (especially Tegra2) tablets versus others, including iPad.
If you're simpoly looking for a tablet which works and works very well, get yourself an iPad. And accept it's a pretty much closed OS.
If you're looking for a working Android tab, go for the SGT, although I'm not sure how well the TAB is working.
With all these tegra2 tablets, we're in for some disturbing months. Right now, these products all seem to suffer from pre-release firmwares which haven't been adapted well enough to the powerful (and partly cheap) hardwarechoices the various suppliers have chosen.
In the case of the Folio100, I knew very well I was buying a product with factory-default rubbish FW, but after reading Dexter's posts I figured it was worth trying, playing, failing and reinstalling.
All in all, I'm happy with the Folio, it's definitely NOT the product is should become, but pretty decent workeable and, last but nost least, FUN (and irritating at the same time).
I just hope Toshiba will, at some point, come with an acceptable FW AND that, in the meantime, Dexter and others will be able to cook some nice firmwares based on 2.2.
The Folio FEELS at some point very powerful, so the Tegra2 should be able to perform, but most of the times it seems lazy. For me a clear indication its the firmware of the machine. Unfortunately, it's a bit the same with a Galaxy S-phone. Powerhouse, but the firmware (2.2) is yet not there to unleash the full power.
Let's hope we'll get 2.3 running on our Tosh and that it supports dual-cores. I expect until then we'll have a nice (and often frustrating) toy to fiddle around with....."
why mod?
For me the big disappointment with the Folio was that none of the Google stuff worked and I expected this from a device with Android.
Dexter has fixed this with his mods and now i can see all my picassa pics in the Gallery, my contacts calendar and email all sync perfectly. Try Google maps with the street view addin and zoom down streets, spin around, it is the sort of app that the tablet excells at.
He has also fixed the Market and there are plenty that are free and work great like tunein radio, some are worth paying for like Bria if you want a good sip client.
I have gone for the v2 mod as it seems to fly, It is not perfect but it is 1000% better.
Others have found v1 mod better for their use. Dexter has made it easy to try them and roll back and has proved to be adept at fixing issues with easy to apply updates , he can also be stimulated with his Donate button, Early reports are that the other tablets arriving with Froyo are hardly better than stock Folio all crippled at birth. Anyway I am grinning. I had a Nokia N800, ****e at first but then the second os release brought it to life and included a cpu overclock. Some have said we are not using both cores properly so I am looking forward to the next Android even if we have to stimulate Dexter to make it work again
but after foliomod I'll found the original apps ? or I have to re-install them again ? or I'll found others ones ?
and if toshiba will create a FW upgrade I'll have to roll-back to the original state to install it?
sorry for the stupid questions

Some will be there and some better ones have been included plus you have acess to the market where you should find everything you need , this is a bit trial and error but people will hopefully post reports of apps that work well on the folio. Yes you would have to go back to stock rom to get the Tosh update. Hah lets see if that comes:
Hi!
Somehow I got stuck in the Foliomod V01...
When I'm in system recovery trying to upate to a later version I only get:
E:Can't mount DEFAULT_PATH
Finding update package
Opening update package
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
Formatting MISC:...
When I choose: apply sdcard:update.zip
The same message pops up.
Anybody who has got an idea, how to fix this?
stuck
I would delete the update.zip and put a fresh one there, check on the pc that the zip opens and is not corrupt. Ian

Anybody know a way to use bluetooth for tethering, like it's possible with the archos tablets?
I've got 2 phones here wich are capable of making a dial up connection, but they are not as advanced as complete smart phones.
First is a LG GD510 POP and the second is a Samsung U600. Neither phone has a wlan connection, so it must be connected through bluetooth.
I can make a bluetooth connection with either of them and can send files and contact cards to them, but a tethering connection is not (yet) possible.
I know in the archos tablets, there is a possibility to tether, but in the folio (and mods) it's not.
Searching only delivers solutions, where the android device is the phone and a pc is the client or where a connection is made through wifi.

i dont there is any need to compare other hardware platforms..
the you could say Windows7 works fine with flash, but my android does not..
or my milestone works quite wll too, but still not same platform...
Best is put into accepting Toshiba/Nvidia is still work in progress, other major companies seems to plan using tegra2 and then we will for sure see much better support..
Toshiba released the folio100 too quick, comparing to Malata T2 which is still not out, as they realize its not in an acceptable state, although Nvidia is helping them to improve, they have yet to release their tablet and provide updates.
I am about to receive my new archos 101 later this week. I am reading the forums, and so far i have gathered i will need to put android 2.2 on it, and also the android market. what other tweaks should i do when i get it? Apps i need to know about? This will be the first android i have owned so i do not know where to begin.
If there is a thread that addresses this question, please point me in the right direction. my search didn't come up with much as to a list of things that are essential to getting the most out of the archos 101. thanks!

Why would you be disappointed?
I had my archos 101 since November 2010 and I was never disappointed with it.
Its a matter of how you use your device.

Agreed. I've been very happy with my 101. And I tried several popular alternatives before this. Like the Viewsonic, Nook color, Huewii/Ideos S7, and some knock off chinese clone. The 101 beats them all.
thanks :-D
any news on what i need to do once it is out of the box? On my touch pro 2 it took me forever to realize that the first thing to do was flash a custom rom and other tweaks like OC'ing it. any thing i should do to the archos 101?
well...plug it in and charge it...
If you want root and ability to OC, etc...I think you need to jump down to the UrkDroid threads. I'm very happy with stock and hoping for some way to root it. If you don't upgrade the stock I think z4root works though...as well as some additional codecs, but then you are on Eclair. Upgrade brings Froyo. Can't give you much advice beyond that...just load the market apk and start installing stuff.

Check out this thread over on forums archos fans .com . I found a lot of good tips here. (i dont have enough post yet to post an external link.) but under the top thread gen 8 devices there is a post titled newbie tips, and some general set up info.
Something that i have done to really help is upgrade to froyo, then go into the power management and set it to over drive. yes i kills the battery faster, but it seems more responsive. also a new launcher program helps too. i am currently using one called zeam.
I'd say get market, a launcher (adw, launcherpro, zeam) and if you are comfortable with linux, the urukdroid hack. i was a little disappointed with the laginess of my 70 at first, mostly the media scanning but the SDE and Uruk make me jealous of no tablet.
got it today, this thing is nice. i am sitll getting used to android though. I cant get it to access my windows shares though, i input my username/password correctly and it cannot connect...
also, how do i get the codecs on here? must i really pay for them?

Can't help ya with the shares, but you could try removing security from them for a bit and make sure you can connect. That's just basic troubleshooting.
With regards to codecs, probably not. It comes default with a lot of stuff and I can play almost every video/audio file I have. Only a few needed to be converted. Very few statistically speaking. I think the ones you buy are very specific. So try what you have first.
I've not had to download any codecs. The handfull of videos I have watched worked fine.
Zeam Launcher is a must for me. Fastest Launcher I have seen. Love it so much I put it on my Droid X and my wifes Droid2.
Market and Appbrain is a must as is Flash 10.1. Don't forget to do the "Market Fix" to get all the market apps to show up. Forget the stock keyboard as its a laggy POS. Swype does not work at all but Slideit works great. Well worth the price for the amount of hair you will rip from your head trying to get the stock keyboard to register your inputs.
thanks guys! i will look for the market fix soon as i have noticed a few apps are missing. including zeam.
Also, i cannot figure out how to tether this thing to my wm6.5 tilt 2.
i have always been able to tether windows machines, and i can even make a wireless network with it. however, the archos doesnt find my wireless router network, and when i connect it through usb or bluetooth it asks me for APN and username/password which i have no idea what they are.
any ideas?

I'd say autostarts with Archangel is a nice tweak stupid email app always loads at boot wasting precious milliseconds of my life
Hear me out on this one before you shoot me down.
Alpha2.1 has become pretty much a daily for me, with the only real nuisance being the wifi issues. My understanding from other posts is that Alpha3 will be released before moving on to ICS for CM9. If wifi is fixed in Alpha3, it would become a definite daily for me. That said, when CM9 eventually comes out I would like to check it out and provide feedback, but would prefer not to dump a familiar and possible more stable CM7.1 until CM9 becomes as stable.
My question is this. Would it be worth the trouble to setup moboot to triple boot WebOS, CM7.1 and CM9? I doubt the CM team would want to bother with it, but I haven't dealt with moboot until this project. Would it be pretty much the same as editing Grub on a PC to triple boot?
Thank you for your considered opinion.
This is what they posted with the release of CM9 for TouchPad....
CAN I MAKE A TRI-BOOT SYSTEM? (WebOS, CM7, and CM9)
Yes, but don’t bother. There may be instructions forthcoming on this, but it’s a bit advanced - just pick one.

Guess they are not ready to share that... I think I'm gonna have to ask them about it over at RootzWiki...
I myself am looking for a triple boot solution but for a different reason...
Since Android does not allow for separate profiles on one device to allow multiple users to keep separate system settings thru out it like PC's on Windows user accounts... And it doesn't seem like they are making a iUser version for Android...
I only see a solution of 2 separate installs of CM7 or CM9 (whichever two)... And then each person can choose their installation at boot-up.... Eventually they will need to add password protection to them... But that is longs way ahead...
If u look at the vidz from ReverendKJR on YouTube.... U can see that all the CynagenMod variants seem to end up being listed as the same thing regarding of flavor... But the EverVolv ICS install is listed as a different installation... This is just the listing part.... It doesn't mean they work correctly and don't clash with each other.... But we do know that maybe 3 Roms just fit on the TP...
Hopefully they will release how to do this correctly soon....

Triboot instructions may still be coming from what I've read. I hope they do, but if CM9 is stable I may not care as much. As for password protection, to what exactly are you referring? Android already has pins, patternlocks etc.
Well I decided to go ahead with CM9 Alpha0 last night (backed up my CM7 install first). So far super stable, don't really need what's broken (camera, microphone etc). One big reason was that Logmein Ignition hasn't worked since its 14 November update (older version works, but I don't trust the apk download source). Now it works, plus I can now load honeycomb apps! If this keeps up I'll probably never bother with triboot.

Cool... Did u do the multiple performance tweaks???... How stable is u'r Wifi???
Right... Screen Password is there.... And would work at startup... But then u would need to turn it off and to turn it back on... I am looking at a two user system for my TP.... With both parties having separate Android installs... I would prefer a moboot or another booter way to make sure the 2nd user only has access to their install of Android & wouldn't be able to mess up WebOs or my install of Android... Seems iUser would work great.. but no Android version seems to be available... Let me know if u find the Tri-Boot info...

Yes, did the two fixes I saw listed. Also ran Alpha 0.5 tonight. Wifi if anything is better than CM7 Alpha3.5. Installed 3 days ago, only had to cycle wifi off/on once. Have joined 5 different SSIDs in that time, two of those on a 7 access point network on different channels (1, 6 and 11). One was open while rest were WPA2 secured.
As for the multi-user setup, if Android isn't an absolute requirement, perhaps an Ubuntu Linux install would do? I don't know how far along the project is, but if it works you should be able to create as many non-root users as you like. Just an idea.
EDIT: Looking in the "Other Touchpad Development" Forum, the Linux projects appear much more "alpha" than CM9 is now. However Arch Linux looks promising.
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using Tapatalk
Ok so I have CM7.1 Alpha3.5 on the TouchPad. It's decent. However, it's just a blown up phone ROM with some tweaks to make it usable on a screen this large. This means that there's no panes in Gmail or other tablet optimized apps.
Now, I don't mean to diminish the work that has been done to things like the overlay for the buttons - that is really a slick implementation - but is there any way/place to get the tablet optimized versions of apps onto this thing instead of the phone versions of the apps? Or should I just shut up and wait for ICS to come out soon?
EDIT: Sigh. Mod, you can move this to the General section. My bad.
I was thinking of installing this, but if what you say is the case (all the apps will be like they are on the phone) then I guess I will wait til an ICS port comes out. I just REALLY want the Android apps on the Touchpad.
Install it! You have nothing to lose. You can boot into webOS OR CM7 via the startup menu.
Don't let one guy's complaints stop you.
Oh by all means install it. Its crazy fast and in a worst case scenario you lay an easier foundation for installing ICS when it is available. You don't have to use Android - this will get you dual booting.
If your talking about google music or netflix tablet versions, if you edit the device id to something like GT-i900 it will load up tablet versions.
At least this has been my experience...

In my situation, I've had the exact opposite occur: too many apps have told me to purchase the tablet version of their apps, such as SwiftKey for one. Netflix comes up as the tablet version, and i dunno about Gmail, but it doesn't bother me none if it's the phone view, it still works fine.

Really? I edited my building prop to the Galaxy 7 wifi only since it has same resolution as Touchpad using and is wifi, only. All my apps look gorgeous. Typing on SwiftKey Tablet right now. Yeah I understand that - but I'm asking if there's a way to install the honeycomb/tablet versions. It sounds like, from everybody else, that we can with a simple edit of the build.prop file.
I will give it a shot later! Thanx everybody!
Well if anyone knows how to get the Plume Tablet version to run with a build.prop setting that would be great.

Fyi there is a huge difference between "tablet version(hc)" and " tablet optimized " tablet optimized works on larger screen gb units( like our tp)
tablet version is intended for honeycomb devices with the appropriate framework and can only be loaded on honeycomb os.
The reason why ppl are needing to edit the build.prop is for the app/market to recognize our device as a compatible device/hardware on a "tablet optimized " app.
No matter what u do a "tablet version" application will not work on a "phone version " os.
If it were that easy to install a hc application, the current fragmentation would not exist within androids, and ics would not be that important coming out.
Just a food for thought rant since I'm seeing so many God damn threads about this matter lol..
Thanks for listening

Honeycomb source was never released so we are stuck with a phone optimized version of Android until we can get an CM9/ICS ROM. There are new APIs etc in Honeycomb that won't allow those apps to run in Gingerbread even if you somehow force installed them. You can find some apps that will display a tablet UI. Here is a few of ones I use that run a tablet UI:
Netflix (really nice tablet UI update that is working great)
OfficeSuite Pro 5
Maxthon Browser for 10" Tablet
Firefox (tablet UI can be enabled in about:config)
What I look for is apps that have tablet screenshots or have been updated for ICS yet the same version also runs on GB.

so once we have an ics port we will have something that functions just like honeycomb does on the current tablets?

There is a video somewhere in the forums. There are two lines you need to edit. I know what to enter, but can't remember the exact name of the lines that are changed.

GT-I9100 and Samsung are the edits. It still won't let you download too many tablet apps as this is a phone port, but it still rocks.

This release includes the full history of the Android source code
tree, which naturally includes all the source code for the Honeycomb
releases. However, since Honeycomb was a little incomplete, we want
everyone to focus on Ice Cream Sandwich.

But since ICS is here nobody cares about Honeycomb anymore.

More importantly, the HC releases are not tagged, so it is all random guessing as to which ones correspond to the HC builds..
Hey I just switched to cm and I'm loving it but I'm really missing the stock reader app. I still use my nook for reading and the nook app from the market just isn't the same. Is there an update.zip or API floating around I can install to get the stock reader app installed?
- and can someone move this to the q &a session .. my bad

i've been reading the NT forum for months and have heard none mentioned. . okay but just think about it for a second. the stock NT uses hardware acceleration very well ( a thing of beauty ) . . . its the stock 'firmware' that makes the books look so nice ! . . not the stock app . . . the senior devs have 'not' got cm9 tweaked out ( punked out ? ) with hardware acceleration. . . cross your fingers, the new binary level guru in europe will get it ! ! !

Fair enough. I have no complaints about cm9 I know it is very alpha. I just feel robbed reading books now... especially since a lot of the content I read isn't from B&N so now I have to force the app to find it.. with all that said cm is still worlds better than stock.
I use coolreader myself and it works perffectly well on CM7 for me. But then again I never bought any books from B&N as I have a ton of books I have gotten else where that I need to read.
I've tried downloading the generic B&N apk for Android devices, and it didn't work well. Forced-closure, hanging, etc.
I'm using Mantano now which I like very much. Of course, when I want to just focus on reading I'll still revert to my Nook Simple Touch with stock reader.
The issue that I ran into is that the stock app (which I got from the aclaim update I believe, it's been a while) requires a certain version of Adobe Air to run correctly, in addition I do believe it uses the hardware acceleration (can't confirm this) so if your versions aren't the right sort, and certain files aren't correct, it runs like hell. I gave up on it personally.

care to point me to it?
Let me look and I'll see if I can dig it up again.
It's not possible due to framework incompatibility, so if you're not in stock it won't work. B&N apps depend on the stock framework like stock samsung apps and widgets depend on samsung framework.
Conclusion use the B&N app from google play and a 3rth party reader or go back to stock

I'm using the Google Play version of the B&N Nook App and it works flawlessly for me. No force closing or hanging at all.
Agreed. The NOOK app from the Play Market has been flawless for me, reading primarily ePub documents without DRM.
