[Q] strange problem in samsung vibrant - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
i'm not sure if this is the right place(or maybe in android dev forum), so let me know if you know a better place to put this thread.
i have a strange problem with my phone:
1. after charging battery stays at 100% all the time, even after a day, only after a reboot it gets fixed.
2. when powering off the phone and connecting to USB, the phone showed green battery icon, now it doesn't it just start to boot.
3. usb is not recognized by the computer anymore.
i cannot use the usual combo to get into recovery, i've managed by pulling out the battery(the download mode procedure) to get into recovery ?!
just noticed another strange thing, in battery status i see unplugged for 0 seconds, even though the phone is unplugged for an hour or so.
i've used nero V3, and thought maybe putting new rom will help.
so i've installed M3 flagship.
but still problems 2 and 3 remains(problem 1 i didn't check yet since i don't have
the accurate battery mod)
thanks for the help.

got excited for a moment thought some one had an answer for me

Those are weird problems. I would just start all over and odin back to stock. Then flash whatever rom you want. Don't forget to check the repartition box in odin

Sounds like it could be an issue with the micro USB port on the phone.
Just to make sure it's not a software issue try flashing back to stock JFD using Odin and see if it continues to happen.

can't odin back as my computer is saying that "the device is not recognized" and the phone still shows full instead of not charging when i disconnect it from the computer.

So while the phone is unplugged and stays unplugged if you pull the battery then put it back in does the battery charging screen still come up on its own even when unplugged?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

yes,
while when the phone is plugged in and im pulling the usb out, it still shows that it's charging. only after boot it get fixed.

Plug usb to computer. Pull the battery. Hold both up and down volume buttons together. Plug usb to phone. Then put battery back in. See if that can get you into download mode

did this:
shutdown phone.
pulled battery.
connected to usb.
pressed vol up+down
put battery back while holding the volume keys.
i got the vibrant screen and it booted as usual(got the same error in windows after a few seconds)

if you got the vibrant screen, that's not bad. What error in windows? not recognizing usb? the usb not recognize...does your pc have antivirus with latest def? what os version were you running on phone? have you made any changes to your pc lately like install anything? if not, have you try cold start your computer?
can you get into download mode?
try this [while power off or pull battery, put it back] hold down both volume + and -, now hook in usb cable, it will power itself up and put it into download mode.

i get in windows the "usb no recognized error" i see in device manager "unknown device"
i did reinstall the samsung drivers on my windows 7 x64.
i've also connected it to a vista 32bit with the same error, and my friend's windows 7 x64(he has i9000) and didn't get any alert at all from windows ?!
i've tried with:
nero V3
flagship V3
bionix-v
one more thing is, when looking in SGS tools on battery status i see the voltage/ADC/VF ADC values change all the time but the value of level stays at 100%
update: now i see in SGS tools that the battery went down 80% so this part works fine.

ive got the same problem. Flashing back to stock wont work.. For me it seems hardware related. Ive heard from other forums thats its corrosion in the usb port itself. Im gonna try cleaning it even though im sure thats not gonna fix it. On my phone my battery indicator will stay at 100% untill its been used for about 50% of battery then it will start reading correctly. Of course when you plug it in the charging indicator stays on untill its 100% even if the usb is not plugged in. I flashed back to stock using odin. as long as you have a usb connected notification load up odin with everything plugged in hold pwr+vol up+down untill your phone turns OFF then let go of just the power button you should see the robot digging. Then you can do whatever you want with odin, which at this point of my frustration isnt s*&$.... I really think that its just a crappy usb port design.... Let me know if you find something out.

OK guys, finally I have fixed that issue. Problem is with micro usb(corrosion). You just need take battery out, and clean micro usb port with alcohol and tooth brush very good. That's all what you need to do.

Is my phone bricked?! (grey battery screen)

Hi guys,
I figured I'll post again here since I think I bricked my phone.... I was trying to install Eugene's Vibrant6.zip and I got stuck on the Vibrant Logo with Samsung at the bottom. I tried to reset with both volume buttons and power button and got to grey battery and nothing else...
What I did prior to this was I formatted system and data on the recovery screen as per some posts here and it would just boot into a loop. Windows won't recognize a device and it just shows grey battery image and it doesn't seem to be charging. Anyone can help me?
EDIT:
Out and in the battery, plugged in to USB and it just loads the battery image and it's all grey color as if fully discharged and just stuck on it. Device is also not found in my system so I can't do any adb commands. If I just reset it without the cable it would just sit on the Samsung boot loop. Anything I can do?
UPDATE: Ok, some good news! I heard the sound as it connected via USB, I can see the 2 drives, but they read as Removable Disk and I can't access them...
adb reboot recovery or download
error: device not found
What if simply format the drives via Windows right click menu? Will that do any good or bad? What are my options here? Any help will be appreciated!
UPDATE: Well... looks like this is pretty much a dead phone.... I right clicked and selected Format in My Computer and it just says There is no disk in Driver F: Insert a disk and try again.
Can I a mount an image somehow via MagicISO? Or is there something simpler that I just can't figure out?
Again, thanks for your help!
Thanks.
Has anyone experienced this or am I the only one?

Sorry I have never heard of this or witnessed it while flashing anything to my device. Obviously the battery screen signifies that the phone is off but is in charging mode and hitting the power button will boot the device up. (I'm sure you already know of this). Never heard of it being stuck at that screen after flashing. Hopefully you can get this solved soon. Good luck

Slow down for a second. Your phone is definitely not bricked. Ive been over the edge, and been able to bring my phone back to life.
To clarify, you flashed vibrant6.zip through clockwork mod, and then the phone got stuck on the samsung S? How long did you let it sit there?
It sounds like just your ROM is messed up.
Are you able to "get into recovery"? Holding both volume buttons while you power on the phone, without it being plugged into usb.
Do you have Odin? And have you ever used it?
Its totally frustrating when your phone gets messed up and you don't know what to do.
I flashed the stock ROM via Odin and then wanted to install Vibrant6.zip. For that I entered into a recovery mode via Clockwork and as someone in the other thread advised, I formatted system and also data, don't recall exactly. Then it looped to a standard recovery mode and I just rebooted the phone. This is where it got stuck... Vibrant in the center and Samsung at the bottom of the screen. To test it I left it like that from night till this morning. In the morning I woke up it was on the same boot screen.
Before that at night, after seeing it hand at the boot, I held both volume keys and power, waited for it to reboot, and immediately it showed a circular progress bar, but not moving just highlighted the 12 o'clock bar and second later I see the battery image all in gray and nothing else. It just sits on that grey static image without actually charging it (no green section or flashing dots)
Boot logo only appears if I am trying to reset without the USB cable. On the boot loop I plug in the cable and I hear the USB connecting it, I see the 2 Removable disks, but both inaccessible and adb commands don't recognize the device.
Very weird, as in turned off mode it's not charging at all.. just shows this grey battery image with a circle progress froze on 12 o'clock bar.
That's pretty much it.... I was never able to enter into recovery nor download via the buttons. It would just always reboot into this grey battery screen....
Completely helpless.... I did order a new battery from TMO, maybe the battery is fried and that's why it's not charging and just sits on this stupid static grey battery screen.

Holding both volume keys and releasing power once screen goes blank, only show Vibrant logo again... I have tried this a million times
With USB cable it shows grey battery screen, without the cable just a Vibrant boot loop...
I'm assuming that you have the Samsung drivers installed.
Try the following steps:
Take out the battery and then put it back in but don't turn the phone on.
Plug it via USB.. does anything show up on the screen?

Yes, I have the drivers installed as I was able to locate my device and use adb commands to enter into recovery and download. Also Kies worked.
Doing what you asked simply load the grey battery image and nothing else with a progress bar not spinning. Just sort of hangs on this image and that's all.
Booting without the USB cable loads the Vibrant boot loop. Connecting USB at this boot loop state, would play a sound as if it connected to my windows, but I can only see Removable disks that are inaccessible and adb doesn't find the device...
Very strange.... trying to use the button keys to enter into recovery or download is no use, as that just won't ever happen, even when phone was working fine.
Any other suggestions? I would return the phone for replacement... but I am not sure how it would look with all the files still on the internal disk including root if I am not mistaken... I had only few hours of sleep because of this headache

Are you sure that you're doing the right things to get to download? I've been in this situation and I wasn't able to get into recovery but I was able to get back into download mode.
I believe if you return it back and they find out it was rooted, they will charge you for it. If not, it'll appear on your bill.
I'm sure that you're doing the wrong things to get into download mode. If something is appearing on your screen it is a soft-brick and you're not bricked.
1. Take out battery, put it back in. (to turn the phone fully off)
2. Don't turn it the phone on!
3. Plug the phone into your PC, do not hit the power button!
4. See if the phone shows anything on the screen (powers on its own when plugged in)
IF the phone screen does 'turn on' after being plugged in without you hitting the power button, so far so good.
5. Now while it's on like this, hold the volume up and volume down buttons.
6. Hold the power button as well as the volume buttons until the screen goes black.
7. As soon as the screen goes black, let go of the power button! But DON'T let go of the volume buttons!

A tip to get into download mode is to put the phone HORIZONTALLY (sideways) and it will make it a lot easier.
I am pretty much positive about it. I know a lot of people can easily enter into recovery or download modes, but I know many can't and I am one of them. It would just load the grey battery image instantly as I let go of the power button.
1. Take out battery, put it back in. (to turn the phone fully off) DONE
2. Don't turn it the phone on! DONE
3. Plug the phone into your PC, do not hit the power button! DONE
4. See if the phone shows anything on the screen (powers on its own when plugged in) FIRST THING THAT APPEARS IS A CIRCULAR PROGRESS BAR THAT CHANGES TO A GREY BATTERY IMAGE WITH A BAR IN THE MIDDLE OF IT. STATIC IMAGE, NOTHING ELSE.
IF the phone screen does 'turn on' after being plugged in without you hitting the power button, so far so good.
5. Now while it's on like this, hold the volume up and volume down buttons. DONE
6. Hold the power button as well as the volume buttons until the screen goes black. DONE
7. As soon as the screen goes black, let go of the power button! But DON'T let go of the volume buttons! DONE
THE STUPID GREY COLOR BATTERY IMAGE APPEARS AS BEFORE....
I'm thinking maybe battery is fried and that's why the grey color screen appears and not the usual screen where you see the battery charging...
After reading this thread it's clear that my handset is one of the new ones that have recovery/download modes disabled via the volume+power buttons.
So that pretty much covers it... I hope TMO will not ***** about the files that are on the internal sd that I am unable to access and remove... unless anyone else has any fresh ideals how to gain access to the disk
I think I might have a similar problem.
I accidentally deleted the touchwiz framework so I can't do anything ON the phone. It boots up, and gets me to the lock screen. As soon as I unlock, I am greeted with dozens of unending force closes.
I can get into both download and recovery mode, however, I have not been able to get ADB to recognize the device. I am attempting to push the stock ROM to the internal memory to flash over everything.
I'm not sure what to do to get ADB to work but it's driving me nuts!

Feels like I'm having same issues..
the previous post requires opening the phone and I don't have tools for that..
Here's my issue.
I can't get into Recovery or Download and computer won't see phone to Odin.
I've got drivers installed and AIO Toolbox as well as ADB(which won't work because of computer not seeing phone.
Using the manual option(vol+ vol- power), nothing works.
I've done all the tricks like unplug it then hold vol keys plug it insert battery..
When I do plug in the phone to to even just get a charge in it goes the the battery, but my is is frozen or something. doesn't turn green or have a charging animation. After about a minute or so it was start up and boot loop. I read something about a bad battery? I've got two of them and they seemed fine before..
Before all this I had to Odin and go to stock. I was attempting to get ics back but I was being lazy and trying to do as little as possible..bad idea. I was following slim ics install and flashed cm9 daily, slimics and commons..and now this..
I'm not sure what to do..I usually search around xda or google..10 hours later.. idk..Anyone able to give help please?

Sent from Mount Olympus via Hermes
Did you ever get it fixed man? I literally did the very same to mine a while back and It works like butter as we speak. It is fixable with a mini-usb jig or dongle. You can make your own with about $3 worth of parts from radio shack but I recommend buying one, it will be easier. I for the record made mine simply twisting together the resistors and though it was tough to touch the right pins it did eventually work and get me back into download mode.
Hopefully you already got it fixed though. If not I can help you out.

Bricked my Vibrant.. Can you help?

I'm not sure where to go for help or what to do next, so I'm posting on here (I've read a lot of great stuff on here in the past and now!). So, here's the story:
Tmobile came out with their 2.2 update and I decided to get on the band wagon and update my phone. What I didn't know after I started was that the stupid Samsung program doesn't want to work with Win7 x64 for whatever reason. So after my phone is sitting at 2% for two hours, I decide enough is enough and I disconnect it and reset it.
Now it's got the phone...!...PC picture on it (or black screen o' death).
I've tried just about every combination of the 3-button push to get it into the "download" screen I've been able to find on this forum and others, but all I ever get is the black screen of death. I've got Odin installed and it sees it when I connect the phone via the USB cable, but I still never get onto the download screen. I thought "what the hell" and tried to flash it anyways with Odin. The phone went to a completely purple screen. Reset and back to the Black screen of death.
So, there you have it. Is there anything else I can try? Or is my phone dead dead? I've read about some kind of micro-usb-resister thing I can try, but I'm not positive of being able to reproduce that item. I've also read a lot of terms and procedures that I'm very unfamiliar with. I'm a compelte noob when it comes to flashing and rooting my phone in fears of this exact problem. Now I'm facing it and need some help.
Thanks in advance for your help!
All I can tell you is keep trying to get into dl mode. It can be a real pain in the ass getting the three button to work sometimes. Good luck.

Pull everything out, battery, sim, microsd
Have ODIN open
Plug the usb into the PC
Plug usb into the Phone
Hold down ONLY the volume buttons
Put the battery in
Take your battery, sim, and everything out of your phone. Open odin. Connect usb cable to your computer only. Put your battery back in. Hold volume up + volume down. Connect usb to your phone. BOOM. You should be in download mode and recognized in odin.
Flash back to stock. If it's that messed up, you may have to use eugenes froyo that doesn't brick first. Search the stickies for that.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for posting! So, I tried both methods that you two mentioned, but I'm still only getting the phone..!..PC image. SD card, SIM, and Battery removed; connected USB, held down volumen buttons, and put in battery. Odin does appear to see the device attached (shows up "0:[COM5]" highlighted in yellow), however. Any other thoughts or perhaps there is something I'm missing?
Thanks again for your help!
Addition: I'm using Windows 7 Pro x64 if it matter..
Try odin on different pc. Or try different version of odin. Did you make sure you had proper Samsung drivers installed? 64 bit drivers. After opening odin make sure you have micro usb plugged to pc. Hold only the volume up and volume down buttons at the same time. Now plug usb to cell and that should do it.

Try it with the phone just powered off.
Pull the battery and unplug the USB from the phone.
Leave it plugged into the PC.
When you put the battery back in it should stay powered off.
Now with the battery back in, ODIN open, and your holding both of the volume buttons down, plug the phone in to the usb.

It's working!!
So, when the xda forums went down last night and I didn't have much other guidance I decided "what's the worse that could happen if I keep on screwing with it?". Well, I could never get to the actual download screen no matter what buttons or combination of buttons I pressed. However, my computer would always recognize the device and so would Odin.
I downloaded a .PIT file, loaded it into Odin with the new 2.2 .TAR file. Then I hit "Start". To my amazement, the thing started to update the phone! Even while the phone was still on the "phone..!..PC" image. There was even the download/process bar showing up on the phone itself. 10-15 minutes later and the phone is up and running. The best part, though, was that all my settings and apps were still loaded and working! Odin must have taken over what samsung's piece-of-crap Kies program couldn't do and finished the upgrade process.
Thanks to everyone's input and this forum! It's a lifesaver!

[Q] Kind of a brick question.

Hey everyone.
So the other day I got excited about the CM7. I was following the steps to install it. i made a mistake. after i flashed the kernel. i rebooted my phone now all i get is a screen with picture of phone with a yellow triangle attached to a pc.
The thing i've tried to do was
1.take out the battery
2. take out the sim(which was already taken out to be in my gs4g)
3.took sd card out.
4.plug usb into phone and computer
5.put battery in while hitting the vol +/- minus rocker and nothing happens.i have odin open when I( try this.
my computer just wont pick it up.
when I plug in my gs4g it picks it up right away.
I've spent all weekend working on this.
also i think they only way before hand for me to get into download/recovery was for me to use adb. could that be why I'm not getting any progress?
Thanks in advance. Also sorry if this question has been asked so many times..
Is your problem getting into download mode? Or is it that you get into download mode but Odin won't recognize the device?
If its the former, getting into download mode is a bit tricky in CM7, I've done it plenty of times though. This worked for me.
1. Unplug the usb cord.
2. Pull out the battery.
3. Plug usb cord in.
4. Hold down vol+ & vol- and power button
5. You will see the loading circle or whatever it's called, when the screen goes black let go of power button.
You should be in download mode now. Sometimes you won't get the loading screen and the phone'll just boot up, if so pull the batt and try again.

not getting that at all no com ports show up.. I'm going to try this on a different computer.
When I get the black screen with that icon in the middle and I plug it in, Odin recognizes it right away. Furthermore, I've only gotten it before when I go into download mode(yellow sign + android sweeping) and Odin doesn't recognize my phone and I pull the battery then turn it back on.
Get odin up usb cord connected to the computer but not the phone
Remove the sim card the sd card and the battery and do the vol up and down boot. Then while holding the vol buttons down at the same time plug in the usb.
That should get you back to recovery.
READ the STICKY for NOOBS......... S15274N did a wonderful job of explaining all the methods on how to get into recovery from a soft brick
good luck

I've been trying all of those methods. Before this happened the only way for me to get into download was using adb reboot download command in adb.
The computer does not recognize in odin. I've tired this on two computers now.
I have all the drivers installed. i uninstalled ed reinstalled etc. used two different usb cables etc.
not sure what else to try. other than a baseball bat....
so i looked around and i bought a jig on ebay from skisky1. hopefully it will be here soon . to try this out .

Is my Fascinate bricked beyond repair?

I was flashing from MIUI 1.9 to MIUI ICS in CWM and all seemed well until upon boot it hung on the MIUI bootup screen. After waiting about 15 minutes I figured I would simply ODIN back to stock and try again as I normally do when I have a problem flashing. In ODIN however I was unable to make it past the boot.inf stage of the flashing. Stupidly I unplugged the usb cable mid flash and tried again, and again same result, it would hang at boot.inf. After trying a couple different stock ODIN files the phone will not turn on at all. Even if I pull the battery and connect the phone to the pc I cannot boot into download mode. When I connect to the wall charger the battery screen does not come on either.
Strangely if I press the power button on the phone with the phone connected to the pc, windows will make the sound of a usb device being connected, however, if I release the power button it makes the sound of a usb device being disconnected. ODIN does not seem to be recognizing my phone anymore since I haven't been able to boot into download mode.
I've bought a usb jib hoping this would solve the problem but it hasn't seemed to work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Please someone help me get my phone up and running again. I've flashed numerous roms before and had trouble but nothing as serious as this.
Try reading up on Droidstyles Guide . Its in General section .

Thanks for that. I went through his guide but unfortunately I think my problem is a little more serious. My phone will not turn on at all. I cannot boot into CWM, download mode or boot normally. The screen just remains black. It doesn't show up as a recognized device in windows but when I connect the usb cable it makes a sound of it being connected.
If any has any ideas on things I could try I would be really grateful. I bought my phone out of contract and can't really afford to buy a new one right now.

Can you "3 finger" into recovery ?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda app-developers app
No, when I try to use the 3 buttons to boot into recovery the screen stays black.
Another strange thing it's doing is when I connect the phone to my Mac with the SD card in the phone the Mac will continuously popup a window that asks whether I want to connect the usb device to the Mac or my virtual machine. It flashes so fast I'm unable to click either option. If I connect the phone without the SD card in this menu never comes up but I'm still unable to boot into download mode.
Hmm....I've never heard this before...have you tried plugging phone charger in ( wall outlet ) and let it charge 8 full hours
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda app-developers app
You say you bought " out of contract", from a private seller ? No warranty?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda app-developers app
I charged it from the wall charger overnight still no luck. Yeah, I bought it a year and a half ago used from ebay. I think it's really strange too. I've had plenty of hiccups flashing roms before but it's never been something ODIN couldn't fix and I'd at least be able to get into download mode.
I think you are going to have to use UnbrickableMod.
Thanks MM. I bit the bullet and bought a used Galaxy S II. I may still try that unbrickable mod so I can give my Fassy to my mom who's overdue for a smartphone. I've never used a soldering iron though and not too certain how successful I'll be.

Have you tried the wall plug trick?
I had been running a Fascinate rom on a Showcase for almost a year & the same thing happened to me. Initially, the battery had run completely down and after full charge, I had nothing but bootloops. At first I could connect via odin, but could not complete flash.
After messing with it & yanking out the cable as you did, I had same issue, blank screen, pc would beep but that was it, pc/odin would not recognize or show the comm port. I would get unknown device.
Ultimately, I successfully repartitioned & odined a stock Fascinate Froyo EB01 rom by doing several things -- not sure which worked, but perhaps might work for you rather than soldering
First, I fully charged an oem battery using a spare battery charger (not in the fassy)
After charge, I put the batt in the fasc & plugged the fasc in to the wall charger while holding down the volume button & got the download mode to show up.
I left batt in when I unplugged from wall & the download mode stuck.
Odin still didnt recognize on my laptop, so I tried 3 other machines till I Odin finally saw the fascinate, at which point I odined Froyo with .pit & repartitioning as my starting point, then clockworked & rooted etc. I think I left battery in during the flash, then reflashed later in download mode with battery out.
I was also successful using heimdall a few times, when another pc wasn't available & odin wasn't playing nice. Was very odd, as 2 of those laptops ALWAYS worked fine with odin & the fascinated showcase before. Now they still won't recognize, but I can easily odin if I try diff computers --- some windows 7 some xp & some vista.

I had the same issue. I think it had to do with the battery being too low. I think that ODIN could have a check in place to allow only to flash if the battery is not clos to low in case things go wrong. I had a second fully charged battery and when i read the above post, i changed the battery across and it set it to download and ODIN eventually detected it. Thanks for the help guys.
I have a similar problem, I was on PA JB rom 2.18, and I decided to flash latest devil kernel [1.5.2? or something like that]
so then it would just boot into devil recovery. and that's all. Tried to flash pa rom over it [to get stock recovery back] but it failed. also it had lots of errors about mounting.
So I did advanced restore, and chose to restore boot from other JB backup. This just made it worse, bootlooping into an android recovery with a "!" triangle, then immediately rebooting, over and over again..
So I put into download mode, and heimdall a boot.img extracted from the JB rom [paranoid android], and it still didn't work right.
So then I heimdall'ed the atlas.2.2.pit, thinking the partition was screwed. Then I was booted into cwm 6.x! So I thought I was out of the woods, and wiped, then flashed PA 2.18 jb rom, and then rebooted.. and then I had no samsung logo bootloop. I could tell cuz it was dark, and I could see the backlight coming on and off. on, off... on... off... endlessly.
I tried download mode, and it didn't work. That's when I got scared.. I tried it again, nothing. just the black [very dim black, because of super amoled technology] screen, coming on and off..
So I finally tried taking the battery out, and then it went into download mode!
But I still cannot figure out why it will not let me flash any rom. I'm gonna have to boot into windows and odin back to EH03.
Good thing I have a 3-4 day old backup.
So, do not use devil kernel unless you want a softbrick.

I think the problem is you used the wrong Devil... the latest is 1.6.1 and the older ones will not work with the new partition layout. Get it from http://rootaxbox.no-ip.org/derteufel/
Here is some FYI for you guys. If you are using a pc with a USB 2.0 or higher then it provides the power to go into download mode for Odin. That's why people say to remove the battery and then plug in the USB cable and hold the volume and power to go into download mode for odin. IF you are using a desktop then it's best to use one of the hardwired usb ports on the back of your pc, if it's a laptop then they are all hardwired to the motherboard. USB 2.0 and up all provide power through the usb port, therefore if you leave the battery in while Odin'ing it may not be a good outcome, this is just a suggestion.

It's probably just a precaution so you don't accidentally reboot the phone while flashing or something like that. Every guide I have read says to pull battery before using Odin so I do... and I haven't had any problems. I think it'll probably work fine with the battery in, but why bother taking the risk?

[Q] S2 stuck in ODIN Mode - Not recognized on computers

I had tried to update my phone via Kies and the computer blue screened. Now the phone is stuck on the ODIN Mode screen with a picture of my phone on the left, a yellow triangle in the middle, and a computer on the right. Taking the battery out does nothing, restarting does nothing, restarting while holding down the volume buttons does nothing. No matter what, it always comes back to this screen.
When I plug the device into my windows based PC and open ODIN, ODIN does not see my phone. When I plug it into my linux computer and run lsusb, it does not list my phone in the output, so the computer definitely isn't recognizing that my phone is plugged in. A couple of weeks ago, I had this problem while trying to back up the phone, so I'm not sure if it's related to the botched upgrade or not.
Does anyone have any tips or advice here? I'd really love to be able to use my phone again. I am using the cable that came with the phone. I have the same results with other cables, as well....
I'm happy to provide more information if needed. Just tell me what you need to know.
That screen is a form of download mode. You should be able to flash stock or stock plus root from there.

If this statement reflects what you actually did, then it suggests the wrong order. You must first open oden on the desktop, and then connect the phone to the computer in download mode.
Try that first.
Next you could try putting the phone into download mode with the battery pulled out. Open Odin on the desktop, then with the battery out, hold down the vol- button while plugging in the usb cable.
Thanks for your response.
So I went ahead and cleared out everything and then reinstalled the USB drivers. Opened ODIN, connected USB to computer, took battery out of phone, put battery back in, held down volume buttons and inserted the cord. The screen immediately loaded up the one I spoke of in my first post. Odin still did not recognize that I had my phone plugged in.
So then I installed Kies and went to the firmware restoration item under the tools menu. Entered my model and serial number and put my phone into recovery mode according to the instructions there, but the "Start Upgrade" button was grayed out and never became clickable.
One thing I did notice while doing this (On yet another new computer) is that when I plug in the phone, I get a "USB Device Not Recognized" error in Windows. I'm not sure if this is a result of it being in download mode or not, but I thought it worth mentioning. I did attempt to blow out my mini USB on the phone for good measure, but had the same result, even with another cord.

Yes, multiple ports on multiple PCs.
The port was working fine yesterday when the Kies update failed.

First of all make sure that your PC isnt running Kies in the background - Use Tsk Manager to kill Kies process
Then Plug In your Phone
Enter Download Mode by holding both volume buttons and powerbutton till the Boot Screen Appears.Let the power button go when you see the boot screen but keep holding the volume buttons.
In no time you'll be in Download mode
Then go to odin and check if your computer recognises it. Odin willl show you (Com:x) X - Any Number
Then you can easily flash stock rom or a custom recovery..

You could order one fairly inexpensive. But order it or make it still takes some time. But as several have mentioned, it may help.
Did you try forcing download mode with the battery out as I suggested in the second post?
Yes, I have tried forcing download mode by taking the battery out, holding down Vol and inserting it again. These are also the instructions that Kies gives, but it didn't work there either.

My phones update failed and I got the same phone, triangle, computer. I tried different USBs, different USB ports, different computers, tried Odin, nothing worked. As soon as I found my USB jig that was lying around, and plugged it in before I put in the battery, and the regular download mode which I am used to seeing showed up. ODIN recognized the phone and I flashed back to stock ICS rooted I downloaded from XDA.

That's different that what I suggested. Remove the battery and leave it out. If you have to, sit on it so you won't be tempted to put it back in, lol. While holding vol down button, plug in the usb cable. The usb will supply the power. The phone should boot into download mode.

I guess I misread that. I blame it on my stressful week ending with no phone
So I just did that and boom, download mode as I would expect loaded up first time, no issues after I held down both Volume buttons while plugging it in (Holding down just Vol - didn't do anything). Unfortunately, it still did not show up in Odin (Kies background processes were all killed and USB driver IS installed on this computer and Odin WAS open before I plugged the phone in)
So I unplugged, opened Kies, and was going to try a restore through there since I could finally get download mode working properly. Except when I tried it this time, nothing happened. I held down the vol buttons, plugged it in, got a single vibrate, but nothing showed up on the screen. Unplugged, put the battery in, and it turned on and screen worked. Took out the battery and just plugged it in and the screen worked after vibrating 6 short pulses (It pulled up the screen mentioned in my first post). Unplugged, held down vol buttons and plugged it in, same thing. Blank screen.
Now I'm really at a loss. I'm starting to wonder if there is something wrong with my USB port on the phone itself.

Hi there,
i have same problem with my Galaxy ACE GT-S5839i: i can't get ODIN to detect my phone. Originally, i tried to flash my phone and made a mistake in the process (installed a ROM before i installed CWM). This caused my phone to stop booting. The only thing remaining working is the download mode. But i can't get ODIN to detect. I tried 2 PCs, different USB ports; i tried to install Kies, or just the drivers... nothing makes ODIN detect my phone... I hear my PCs detects the phone when in download mode (it bips) and my PCs both recognized my phone (Samsung Mobile USB CDC Composite Device). On PC uses windows 7 and the other Windows Vista. I ran ODIN v4.38 on both... Would be grateful for any idea what to do...

I had the same problem with kies on a sprint s2. EXACT same problem. Cord got jerked out in the middle of Odin flash. THE ONLY screen i could get is the one you described.
Also went through the steps with keis, dl firmware, got to the last part but the start button was greyed out. I had to do this several times and finally the start button lit up. Idk why it didn't work before but it finally did. Have you tried doing it more than once?
I wished i could be more help but that was my experience. Maybe it will work for you.
