[Froyo] Soft button on status bar (framework mod attached 01/30) - Nook Color Android Development

I've modified froyo framework to add soft buttons (back and menu) on the status bar. But there are some screen artifacts on the lock screen with my mod. I'm thinking it could be due to a difference in the froyo source code i used. Does nookie froyo has a git repo anywhere? Turns out I forgot to copy over 1 of the jar files. Remount your froyo /system partition rw, and unzip the attached framework.zip, copy the files into /system/framework, reboot and enjoy

link to the source code patch for those interested.

There is a NookieDev's project on GitHub: http://github.com/NookieDevs/
But there are also several people working on their on forks of the repositories:
https://github.com/cicada/
https://github.com/fat-tire/
Nice work on the interface buttons I was hoping someone would start working on something like this. I've seen similar buttons on the GTab (TnT) releases and I was wondering what it would take to put those into Froyo (or some other build )
Edit: A picture of what I'm talking about:

Do the buttons work just like shown or do you have to drag the notification bar down to use them? Are you going to post instructions how to accomplish this?

Can you share your code? I've tried to put all 4 buttons in the bottom ala archos 101 with no success. Cant wait for the honeycomb open source code
Nook Color via Xda App

This is great! Is there any way to move it to the bottom, too?

I can't see froyo source code on any of the git repo above. Admittedly my git-fu is weak If I've mistaken about github and indeed froyo source is available in one of the repos above, let me know!

The buttons work just like normal buttons. No need to pull down the notification.

Currently there are some screen artifacts (an extra plus button, and when you drag to unlock, the target dot is replaced by another image) on the lock screen. I'd like to sort this out before posting the compiled jar/apk and source.

That's my idea too. i think B&N got this right. With a tablet form factor, it's definitely more convenient to have the buttons at the bottom rather than top. Google is going with this direction in honeycomb as well. I'm still trying to figure out how to do this in froyo though.

The nook color is my first android device so I'm not sure if this repo is for froyo (I read it was, but it was in a bit of an older post) or gingerbread but here it is.
https://github.com/android/following
Based on the dates of items added I believe it is froyo though.
Also, looking very much towards your release of this. It may re-enable the use of my volume buttons as volume buttons

Yes - this looks great. I spent some time trying to work on gesture based system-wide back menu functionality (like how in several popular ereaders you drag your finger down the left side of the screen to change brightness - or swiping left on the Bn eclaire status performs the back function) But your solution is quite elegant and I can't wait for you to release it. I think I migh wear out my remapped hard volume keys...

shameless self bump I've attached my framework mod in the 1st post. Everything should be working now.

I installed in fine, and it ran beautifully.
However, ever since I installed it, I started getting FCs in the Browser and some other apps like TweetDeck. I cleared cache, dalvik as well, still no go.
FWIW The same issue occurs when I apply the no network bars mod as well.
Good job however!

Could you explain a little bit more about how you did this, or post source code?

This is huge. Thanks for doing this.

This is great work, but I've gotten too addicted to having vol up and down be my menu and back buttons Also, you might wanna consider moving those buttons in towards the middle as we know how badly the NC's touchscreen works at the corners.
God, you GOTTA love Android and how infinitely modifiable/enhanceable it is.

Can you fix the width of the notification drawer or give me some instruction on how to do it?

Correct me if im wrong, but since it is on an sdcard can't you just load the system partition (im 99% sure you can in ubuntu) and just swap it out with your old frameworks on your mac? (you did back up the older version right? if not Im sure someone can post it for you)

I have the exact same issue. Stuck on the android screen. Copied files to /system/framework using root explorer on a dual-boot emmc setup. Stock boot still works, but froyo boot is borked.

3 Options to install.
First step: Simply rename "Streak_Bios_bootanimation.zip" to "bootanimation.zip"
1. ADB
Navigate to the folder containing "bootanimation.zip" in terminal/command prompt.
Type the following
Code:
adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local
Then to test, set your device so display is in landscape (will not display properly if you have it on portrait and test it but will display fine either way on boot)
Code:
adb shell bootanimation
2. Root Explorer
Copy "bootanimation.zip" to your SD card
On your Streak open up Root Explorer (or any other app that allows you to copy paste to the internal memory)
Copy "bootanimation.zip" and paste it to /Data/Local
3. Terminal Emulator
thanks nickshertzer, his directions are for drop box but can easily be manipulated for simply copying the bootanimation.zip to your SDcard

BTW, if you don't have / want to get out that sync cable for ADB, use dropbox & Terminal Emulator. Make sure you download the .zip using dropbox longpress first before running following command (requires Busybox / can't remember if it is installed default on Steve's ROM)
Code:
su
cp /sdcard/dropbox/bootanimation.zip /data/local/
reboot

---UPDATE Jan. 6, 2011---
Slowed down to 10 FPS and edited the 2nd part which loops until device boots
---UPDATE Jan. 13, 2011---
Changed 2010 to 2011
TRACKBALL replaced with VOLUME UP
Nice work!! Looks very cool! Have to try this out!

Cool tip. Will add to the first post when I get to my pc.
Also for those of you that put this on their steaks, how many times does it say "initializing ...... /" before it actually boots?
I counted 20 till it did the weak vibrate and 2 more times till it showed the lock screen.
nvm, updated it so it now has a slower FPS. Also see my post 2 down from this one.

I counted 11 flashes of "initializing ......... \" during two separate reboots. So I did a battery pull and left it out for 30 seconds and popped it back in and boot. That time I counted... 11 again. White bb US streak running StreakDroid 1.4.6 with StreakMod Recovery.

Why'd you pull the battery? did it stop spinning?
BTW this is just an animation, it has nothing to do with the actuall boot process.
It just loops the second part until the device actually boots.
You should only pull the battery if it stops moving, then you know the device is frozen.
Also since i slowed down the FPS and edited the 2nd part, "Initializing ....." will now stay there and only the "-\|/-\|/" will loop on top of each other.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Sometimes, a soft reboot is a bit quicker than a cold boot. I simply pulled the battery to test cold boot times.
If you really want to watch it spin and spin and spin on "initializing", go into recovery and wipe Dalvik cache!
Very nice work
Used to have this back in the day on my TP2

I'll do it sometime later this week.
You should change the final image from a text-based droid to an actual image. Will look far nicer.

The thing about a loading bar is how these boot animations are made and ran.
It has 2 folders (well you can make as many as you want) and it basically runs through all the image files in each folder, one after the other, making it animate.
This boot animation has 2 folders. It goes through the images in the first folder once, then the second folder on an infinite loop (till the system boots), hence the rotating astrix after "initializing ....." .
So a loading bar wouldn't work that well.. it would go full, then empty to full again. But what i could do is make a "scrolling" load bar, kind of like the windows xp loading bar.
NiiicE!!!! thank you!
awesome
this rock awesome work make worked perfectly first try installed the dropbox / terminal method

Honeycomb Lockscreen for CM7 Nightlies

HONEYCOMB Lockscreen for Legend Nightlies
As many of you have probably noticed, XDA member bizdady has been making Honeycomb lockscreens for CM7 RCs and Nightlies for various devices.
Unfortunately, the Legend was not supported... Until now!
After following the instructions below, a honeycomb themed lockscreen will completely replace the "style options" for the CM7 lockscreen including "Sliding Tab", "Rotary", "Rotary revamped", and "Lense".

Make sure you're running either CM7 Nightly #12 OR #13
INSTRUCTIONS
Make a backup!
Download the applicable attached zip and flash like a normal ROM.
Go here to thank/donate to bizdady.
Enjoy!
NOTES
ONLY LISTED NIGHTLY BUILDS ARE SUPPORTED! Please check the pre-requisites to verify which nightly you'll need to be running.
These instructions are for S-ON users. S-OFF users can go to the original post here and use metamorph.
Future nightlies will be supported - but NOT every single one!
The attached zip is purely the work of bizdady.
I will not answer questions about how to reverse/change the modification so please run a backup or see the second comment below.

To go back to normal you can always reflash your current nightly rom. That will overwrite the modded framework and put everything back to stock.
^ er..flashing a copy or backup of the original cm7 b12 framework-res.apk & Clockopia.ttf will do the job instead of flashing the rom again. works for me, at least
i'm on 140lcd w/ the settings below. swiping from right to left opens either my messaging app or the vibrate option.
however, shouldn't i be getting buttons on the right portion like the one on the left below?

The icons are setup for rotary style so only an unlock icon in middle shows. If you set it to sliders will have invincible icons for sound/text.
Sent from my Evo 4G CM7 nightly machine!
^ cool, man! thought i was missing something. hope you could do another version w/ buttons/icons for both txt and sound. i'm more inclined to use the sliders as the rotary thingies don't look good on my modded screen. anyway, thanks again...
New msg indictors for sms & email r my biggest intrest 4 lockscreen.
thanks great work but i have a problem
i have rom cm7 but if i flash the zip with rom manager, does not start after reboot
where i wrong?
rename the zip?
thanks all
Two questions:
1) Do you mean the phone won't start at all, or you just have to press the power button yourself?
2) Which nightly are you on?
If you experience problems, I recommend returning to your backup.
Strange behaviour on new nightlies
I am having an issue with the Honeycomb lockscreen on the latest CM7 nightlies.
When I flash the lockscreen, the device and all functions work properly but the menus and dialog screens are messed up with incorrect (and often funny) text.
The affected ones I have noticed are:
- Damaged SD Card (although if you open File Manager the SD card works just fine)
- USB connection dialog from status bar (gives an error message but it actually works if you click on it)
- Long-press power button menu (Silent Mode, Airplane Mode, Profile, Reboot, Power Off)- the text goes all funny and when you click one of the menu items you get an even funnier dialog box but in the end it works the way it should (if you remember where to click)
The above all happens after I flash the lockscreen to the newer CM7 nightlies (tries with 25, 26, 27, 28) and when I re-flash the ROM (i.e. override the lockscreen) everything goes back to normal (fixed)

As it says in the OP, this lockscreen only works on Nightly 12 & 13. You'll also notice that the zips are clearly labeled 12 & 13.
I'll ask the original developer for 28, but I didn't want to keep bothering him with requests for every single nightly.
I am aware of that but I kept trying the lockscreen with newer builds (after 12 and 13 and into the early 20s for experimentation sake) and it was working fine with no issue at all until build #25 and that's why I felt the need to report it now
Fair enough, but I can't guarantee it'll work beyond 12 and 13 right now. I also don't have the expertise to fix myself since I'm not the original developer. Hopefully we'll have one for 28 from the dev at some point.

Hey great work! I will try this one soon.
Sidenote: what is the name of the volume bar .png? I could not find it in the framework!
Followed instructions and it worked perfectly... was my first successful adb push! I liked the colors and icons a little bit more on this one for some reason.
Is there a reason the notifications and preferences icons don't have the same color scheme? Aside from that, really enjoy all the icons and colors!

yea... the notifications icon that launcher pro uses for its settings menu is inside the launcher pro app... i will be theme-ing that and a whole lot of other google apps to go with this...
@olieebur the volume bar colors are in framework\res\drawable\progress_horizontal.xml and the .png is named progressbar_indeterminate1, 2, and 3
also this is not perfect.... let me know some bugs you find and i will try to fix it... and as obsessionXYZ adds updates to his theme i will also add his fixes.

Yes... and no... you can but you would have a 90% chance of a boot loop. You see... when copying and pasting with root exeplorer,... root exeplore has a tendency of not setting the same permissions as the file it replaces. So if the permissions are not the same then you will get a boot loop. You can change the permissions manually.... but some times when replacing the framework, the system reboots its self... leaving you unable to change the permissions.

Maybe you can copy both files to, let's say, /system, change their permissions to the right ones, and then do the copy. I usually do that in other devices and it ended successfully. Unfortunately, I don't have my Atrix with me (yet) to test it out. Maybe it works, maybe not. Do it at your own risk, and of course, report back!

ah ok, that must have been what caused my first boot loop (the mismatched permissions) it was pre-sbf so i returned the phone for another one. Next time i'm feeling frisky i'll give it a shot (for whatever reason i suck at adb)

I will work on adding gingerblur support on my days off... which will be in about 2 days from now. Also a little update...
-I am near completion onthe framework and will be starting on the launcher pro and google apps theme-ing part on my days off as well.
-there will be a new boot animation made and customized by kmiller8
-a script will be made... or borrowed to automate the installation process.
~also as a side note... all of the updates said above can... and will come to a halt... if I get Wife aggro...

Time not white anymore with 4.1.57 update
The time in the upper right hand corner is no longer white when applying this services.jar to the 4.1.57 update. Anybody else have this problem?

Do NOT install this on 1.57. That update is not deodexed yet and you will have issues, and you phone could potentially brick.
I just realized/found out about it being due to the deodexed issue.
Too late to not put this on 1.57 though for me, its there. Haven't noticed any other issues, other than the clock text, but i'm still learning.
Thanks.
Quick update 2...

Report bugs for cyanogenmod openaos (bubu)

Regarding the release of gingerbread for gen8
When you detect an issue, bug or something is not working you can create a ticket for it on the openaos wiki.
But be aware, you must follow some guide lines else it is useless to us.

}
Note: If you encounter installation errors, please don't create a ticket for it. It will be a user error.
Note: Don't create tickets for external apk's that are not working or you have to be 100% sure that this is related to the gingerbread image.
Be sure you use the latest released gingerbread image from openaos.
Be sure there isn't already a ticket available for your issue. Look here first.
1. Fill in your real e-mail adress, it will be hidden from public. You will get e-mail notifications when the status of the ticket changes.
2. Give a short but descriptive title to the ticket
3. Describe your issue or bug, please use precise steps on how to reproduce and if possible attach a kmsg and logcat output. Also state what device you are using.
So saying I get random reboots really doesn't help us.
4. Type:
defect --> choose this when there is a bug or something isn't working.
enhancement --> for example bigger buttons for the softbuttons
task --> not needed at the moment
5. Priority: Here you can set a priority, if the type is enhancement that means minor. However if your archos crashes then it would be major.
6. This you have to set to Android 2.3. Don't forget it.
7. Here you can fill in some keywords so the ticket can be easily searched for.
8. Attach files. For example your kmsg and logcat output.
Finally if you have read and understand the above, you can click on the following link to open a new ticket. http://dev.openaos.org/newticket
Further if you are unsure if your issue should be a ticket or you don't pass the spam test then you can post it in this thread. However same rules do apply. Most important is be so precise as possible and describe the reproduce steps.
Please: Don't use this thread for discussing, use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139154 instead.
Thanks for your help on tracking down problems in the cyanogenmod port to archos gen8.

What is the problem and happens it on a freshly downloaded gingerbread release?
What steps to reproduce the problem?

installed zimage and initramfs july 5th release from http://download.openaos.org/bubu/gen8/
installed cm7 image from http://download.openaos.org/bubu/gen8/android/ - july 8th release
i've followed this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153522 twice and the tutorial at arctablets once. so perhaps that will reproduce the problems...
i'm unable to move files from "/sdcard" to "/" on my tablet. is it possible that this could pose the problem?

in booted tablet
- sdcard doen't get automounted.
- programs (ie titanium backup) see /mnt/storage (first partition on internal NAND block1, vfat) as external storage (sdcard).
- internal storage is the size of the openaos-gingerbread.img on /dev/loop0 (ext4 mounted)
therefor "/" is the root of your imagefile, and /sdcard is not mounted

i still don't know what you are talking about and what should be a bug?
your pictures at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15798993&postcount=336 that you brought as example
have nothing at all to do with being colored inverted like in the two png's above.
like in newRGB (R,G,B) = 255 (R,G,B) - oldRGB (R,G,B) that would be a colour conversion
just the google searchbox has an other colour as you expect, so what is the problem?
if you are talking about "inverted": than everything where others have black would be white at your screen and ALL colors would be inverted, everywhere, what color does your googlemail icon have, i'd expect red?
http://dev.openaos.org/ticket/200#comment:2 see "Attachments"
reds are blue, and yellows are greenish/blue. the photographs stored on my tablet, but viewed in gingerbread gallery, look like negatives from a roll of film

i made the two pictures (rgb and rgb-inverted) in gimp and posted it (did not want to do it anonymous and expected a login somewhere, anyway there was none, pictures were in until i could even write the text message ;-)
now i understand, but your video on youtube and the other link you posted in the other gingerbread cm7 thread don 't have it, how comes?

this could also be a hardware failure, reduced or totaly missing red from RGB (red - green - blue) - how is the archos logo at the beginning of boot - is it ok? - or the white screen in the recovery menu - is it full white?
when does the color bug start - allready before the boot or only after the home screen appears?

Sorry I didnt post the video, it was my anniversary with my wife. But, I did manage to snap a couple of photos. The blue background is the gingerbread, the "wood" color background is froyo.
Does this problem occur when you flash the latest initramfs and zImage from http://download.openaos.org/bubu/gen8/ and the latest gingerbread from http://download.openaos.org/bubu/gen8/android/

archos logo has no problems, yes white recovery screen is completely white... except the black text. bug begins after "android" boot logo for gingerbread, so after the home screen appears... or exactly when the home screen appears.

- Download, then extract IT ROM.
- Place ROM into /sdcard/clockwork/backup
- Boot into Recovery
- Wipe Cache / Dalvik Cache
- Restore
Future Updates:
Version 1.2- (ETA: Undetermined)
- Add Mobile Bravia Engine
- Add script for SetInstallLocation 2 (not sure if this will work as a pre-installed feature as it requires a line command prompt, then a reboot)
- Add a Theme Chooser app for the XperianceIT Themes (this one may take me a bit, not very good at app creation)
Some themes from my Theme Thread:
(Original Theme Thread)
"Purple Haze"
"Blood Lust" w/Toggles
"Pink Passion" w/Notification Toggles
"White Elegance w/Toggles"
"Blue Void" w/Toggles
"Blue Void" w/o Toggles
If any of you have any suggestions on new tweaks, mods, or would like to see certain apps included into this ROM as system apps, please let me know.
Special Thanks:
- Hogwarts, for taking the time to teach and mentor me on building a ROM. His COLA ROM can be found HERE
Nice man! My only suggestion would be to offer a CWR ZIP to change the font to something more readable.

Nice Job my man.

Well with a locked boot loader any "custom" ROM are all going to be about the same. Since we cant overclock, or upgrade past 2.3.3 yet. They are all just tweaked a little differently, like my ROM in comparison to COLA, has only a few minor differences... IT-ROM has the camera mod built in, has toggles built in to the theme, carrier name removed, and a few other cosmetic changes.... the next update will have tweaks built into the build.prop, adds a green dialer theme, and replaces font with stock font. This is my first attempt at playing with roms. It was more of a learning tool for me to get the basics down for removing system app, replacing system app, and what not.

Cola has to have /data/ to work
I'm the one who design it so trust me I know.
Once you loose data the rom is broken.

Hey thats awesome info! I was wanting to do something like that but wasnt sure how to make a update.zip, and really didnt want peope to have to reflash the entire ROM again, i know how frustrating it is to have to re-do all your desktops, and widgets, and re-enter al your accounts and sync info.
Would you mind PM'ing me, or post it here, on how to make the symlinks, i am 100% unfamiliar with doing that. (im still learning all of this) Even if it doesnt work with the COLA based ROM, i'd stil like to learn this for future projects, and well, just cause its something I dont know how to do, and I ike to learn.

I know a little bit too, don't worry. You need to keep the Setup Wizard APK which, if absent, breaks the Home button in case of a data wipe. Plus, even if you put a /data folder, it can be empty.
XIT, I think the best that you can do for the symlinks is to grab another ROM (from the Play if possible), unzip it and check its symlinks. I'm not too sure of what symlinks your ROM needs. You can see the symlinks in the update script file in the Meta-Inf folder.

wont work.
locked bootloader cant flash a whole filesystem and datasystem
thats why UK rom has to be flashed as nandroid
1-2 files with the wifimodules work because your just pushing something
but when you try to
format /system
push /system
format /data
push /data
it basicly is going to wipe out CWM recovery in the process because if ur aware the CWM resides in system folder
so yes it wont work for locked bootloader
also I wouldn't keep setup wizard because it is a costly file to keep when it's never needed
the cost is about 1.2 mb not including data if i remember correctly.
so its gone.
when you use nandroid backup you dont need it anyway
I think you're right, I forgot about where the cwm was.

ya i know because i've tried it myself
i created update .zip and the CWM would always return error
i could never get it to work as many times as i tried
I like it, very nice. Plenty of space, apps and drawer loads faster. I implamented the "adb shell, pm setInstallLocation 2, exit". That way I can choose pretty much any app to be moved to sd or installed to sd. Stable rom so far today, no issues.
