[Q] Mobile Broadband Sim Cards In TG01 - TG01 General

Im in need of a mobile broadband solution and my TG01 seems the most convenient option. I've been using a USB tether for a week on the giffgaff mobile network and its awesome, great speeds browsing the web, etc only now i've had a warning from the giffgaff network that im using too much data. I didnt realise but they have a 100mb data limit per day so i must have been using a gig a day atleast !
I need an alternative solution and quick so im looking at these mobile broadband sims you can buy that go in dongles. Only im wondering do i even need the dongle, am i right in thinking a dongle is just a modem so my tg01 should be able to do the same provided with the right settings ? Has anyone tried a mobile broadband sim in a tg01 ?
This is the sim im looking at getting http://threestore.three.co.uk/dealsummary.aspx?offercode=1MB5GD015

omg , I'm on giffgaff too and i though i was a heavvy data user.. its meant to be unnlimited i thought. dont bother with the dongle. get a sim card then thether with a wifi router to your pc. thats what i do for my tab and ipod touch from my tg01. use a mirom,it has the feature included.

Giffgaff is an awesome network, its like having a pay as you go contract and its so cheap ! I thought the unlimited data was a bit too good to be true and turns out it was, i'm also finding that they dont allow tethering on giffgaff now. If it werent for the data limitations it'd be the best network ever ... Anyway, i've bought one of the 3 Uk pay as you go dongles + data sim which will be arriving tomorrow so hopefully the sim will work in my tg01 too. The sims seem to be pretty cheap on ebay so when my initial data runs out ill probably just get a couple sims off ebay . I guess ill have to cut down on the rom downloads now though, and all the other unecessary downloading so i dont run out of data.

Nice Oh, i'm assuming you dont have a Wifi connection. Because i use my giffgaff network a lot for heavy browsing when I'm away from home, but when I'm home, thats where i do my heavy data usage with WiFi. Hope the 3 UK sims all work out for you!
i agree to giffgaff is awesome ! shame the unlimited internet runs out in the 28th feb :/
Cheers

I too am with Giffgaff. It is against the terms and conditions to tether your network conditions so I would not advise doing this, however...
If you did not use "excessive amounts" of data tethering and you managed to slip under the radar as it were then you should not have a problem, say for surfing the net in emergencies rather than downloading huge files.
Also if you use a giffgaff goodybag then the fair use policy (limit) you mention does not apply. it is truely unlimited.
as olyloh6696 said previously, sharing your connection in this way (ie wirelessly) is a really good idea. Although you will be effectively breaking the terms and conditions of giffgaff, if you use a giffgaff sim card. (I AM NOT ADVISING YOU DO THIS IN ANYWAY!!) however I am unsure of exactly how anyone would be able to tell that you were doing this as it is the app your phone which is accessing the data rather than another computer.
I may be wrong!!!
Giffgaff is a wonderfull network for smartphone users as is XDA a wonderful forum

Thanks for the advice with giffgaff hazy, i might give that a try if my data with 3 runs out too soon. i wasn't aware the goody bag gave unlimited data so that's awesome thanks. I'd only do it if im desperate though since getting kicked off giffgaff would be a disaster.
Anyway, now to post back the results with my 3 data sim in the tg01. It works but has its issues, basically i've inserted in the sim into the tg01 added a new data connection with the apn 3internet and everything else blank. This works fine but occasionally i find the connection disconnects itself and results in a limited connection (no internet). This is easily resolved by turning the data connection off and on again so its not too much off a bother. Besides im guessing this is the same on all networks since it did exactly the same when i was tethering with giffgaff.
Now the other thing i think worth mentioning is the dongle i bought with the 3 sim, basically its useless and if your looking into using any sort of mobile broadband id recommend just cutting out the dongle completely since you dont need it. Just buy a sim and put it in your tg01, in my experience these dongles are too much trouble. I've spent a total of 28 hours (over 3 days) trying to get the dongle to work but it just wont connect. Dongle reports a full signal where i am but simply wont connect, tried at a friends and it worked first time. Rang three today, spent over an hour on the phone and they've finally determined its faulty, even though it works elsewhere ? There sending a replacement which i can almost guarantee wont work ...
So apart from the dongle these things are great lol

Cheap GPRS

I've been happily using my XDA for almost a year now, the only complaint being the amount i spend on the GPRS though O2.
What are the other UK networks charging these days? I've heard about others charging as little as £10 for 100MB's, is this true?
I'm about to come to the end of my contract and will be getting an XDA II as soon as it does but i may well get it sim-free and go with another network.
Do i have other options i.e. sticking in a pay-as-you-go sim from another network when i want to use it heavily?
Thanks for your help.
i think the problem may be when you dont say where you are from
the only company's which people can be sure are represented most places are fodaphone, tmobile, o2 and orange and maybe a few others
and those are rearely the cheap ones
oop's sorry. I'm in the UK
t-mobile in usa - $19 a month - unlimited gprs
(not that that would help you 2000+ miles away)

mario,
how do you find the gprs speed thru tmobile?
they say its 40k-80k
but i dont think thats true... it takes me too long to download a small 500k file. unless im doin something wrong!
do u have special settings?
to find the actual speed, i have no idea
the only settings i have, is for the gprs setting, it connects to internet2.voicestream.com
speed is up and down usually, right near a atenna (like near a mall or what not) perfect speed.
at work is another question... with 1 bar of signal i can stream 22k mp3s from di.fm (requires ipv6 which tmobile or ie for pocket pc comes with, cause it works)
work is a office full of computers, in a big brick building... signal is allways bad indoors.

Which radio for HSDPA on O2 UK? Can't get it on 1.50 :o(

I've just got a T-mobile Ameo, unlocked it, upgraded radio to 1.50 and added the AP Dual ROM.
Not sure if I need to change any settings anywhere but I can't for the life of me get anything other than a "G" showing up and very slow connection speeds to match.
I've definitly got it in my area so my next step was to try a different radio. Does anyone have any recommendations which one works on O2/UK or things to try before changing radio?
Many thanks

do a download speed test as i found on t-mobile the icon does not change to "H" with the t-mobile official roms it just shows 3G
Tried all the speed tests. Can't remember the exact results but at the time I was comparing it to the same sim card in my Orbit which is GPRS only and the speeds were about the same.
I'm not even seeing a 3G though, just the G
Ever thought that maybe that area doesn't have HSDPA coverage yet?

Stupid question I'm sure, but ur SIM is 3G enabled isn't it? When I upgraded an old vodafone account to support 3G, they had to send me a new SIM that was enabled for the service.
And my bosses British Telecom SIM card in my Ameo only showed GPRS until they enabled 3G on the account/sim, at which point it then started showing 3G.

my o2 sim's are not 3g sims
Think you could well have it there mate.
I've just tried 1.45 and 1.47 radio's with the same results (just the G showing)
Will geton to O2 tommorrow
O2 are useless when it comes to data, last I checked they did not yet have HSDPA, and had a different pricing structure for data over GPRS and 3G, over GPRS you could buy a data bundle, but over 3G the best you could do was add a £5 add on that gave 4MB, after that it was a £3 per MB charge! imagine paying £2400 to download a Divx movie, you could go and buy the movie in Hi-def plus a Hi-def player plus a Hi-def TV to watch it on for that sort of money!
anyway bringing my post on topic
1) It is true you need a 3G sim (uSim) aswell as a 3G phone
2) It is possible that your area has 3G coverage but not HSDPA
3) Check the cost of "3G data" on your package before you go wild

Not my experience. I have HSDPA on O2 without a problem on my 7500 and laptop (using the O2 USB modem), so long as there is a 3g signal it usually gets an HSDPA download. The 3g symbol will change to an H.
I am using the standard HTC WM6 ROM with Radio 1.5
I have the O2 Web Max tarrif, so I have unlimited data.
I used to disable 3g on my Exec by going into the Phone Settings and setting the Band settings to GSM only instead of Auto (WM6 on the Exec was very poor at swtiching between the 2) - have you looked at that ?
Clearly if you don't have a 3g SIM that will be a problem too.

as a business customer maybe, but try adding web max to a voice tariff so you can have 1 sim does all (like T-mobile do) I think you will find that O2 don't support it !
I pay £37.50 PM for 900 Xnet Anytime mins and unlimited HSDPA data ! what are you getting ?
Well, the first person I spoke to at O2 they told me it has nothing to do with the sim card, he said it was because the HTC advantage is not surpported on the O2 network.
I politely asked to speak to someone who has an ounce of common sense. To which he said he was a manger and he knew more than most
I re-called and the next person I spoke to agreed its probably the sim and I'll need to go into a store and get a new sim card.
Off I popped to the nearest store, but the poor bloke serving had never even heard of HSDPA, let alone what it was.
I asked him if I could possibly try one of their sims in my phone to see if I can get HSDPA and he agreed to let me try his. Before he opened his phone I noticed an H on his screen so I told him what the H stood for.
Anyway sure enough it worked but when he tried registering a new sim to my number their computer system said no
He gave a me number to call to get a new sim sent to me but as expected it took me another two attepts until I found someone who had the slightest idea what I was talking about.
Finally £14.99 and 5 hours later the new sim should be in the post.

you should have said 3.5G it's laymans term for hsdpa and oiks in phone shops understand it.
New sim arrived today and I'm up and running on 3G/HSDPA
The only odd thing is it seems to be constantly be switching between 3G and H.
90% of the time it says 3G then if you hit a link when browsing it'll switch to H. As the new page is loading though it'll swich from 3G to H two or 3 times.
Does this sound normal to you?
Glad it turned out to be something fairly simple (once you actually found someone with an ounce of sense). Mine flicks between 3G and HSDPA fairly regularly - it tends to say HSDPA until a data connection is established, at which point it drops back to 3G

It shouldn't say 'H' until you're connecting or downloading. As soon as you start receiving data it will switch to 'H', although sometimes my 3G would mysteriously switch off entirely in my office (on my Hermes AND Ameo) and I'd be stuck with GPRS until I restarted or waited for about 15 minutes. Strange.

What good is the WiFi Connection

The WiFi connection on this phone is worthless. You turn it on, it finds an access point but it still uses the phones cellular connection to browse the internet or any other data related app. What is the point of this thing?
no it does not.
Thanks for the reply GeLopez but it sure seems that way. I because regardless if I am connected to an access point or not the Internet is still slow.

Try turning Wi-fi off then go into start/settings/connections/connections settings. Pick the advanced tab/select networks. Try different combinations to achieve the desired results depending on how and what you are using the PPC to connect to. Now ok out of everything and turn Wi-fi on, now connect to your access point. Should work now. Let me know.
I will be out of the country for a few days beginning tomorrow, and wi-fi is going to be essential for me to avoid roaming charges. With wi-fi and Skype, I've got connectivity anywhere in the world.
I only use my WiFi and never use Carrier data.
Works like a charm.
Is there a setting that needs to be set. I can connect with any local wireless hotspot with this phone and the internet traffic on the phone is as slow as just using the carrier data network.

Check under Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections -> Wifi -> Adapters. Make sure that the connections are set to The Internet and not to Work. Also, make sure your wifi connection in there is set to accept a server-based ip address.
Thanks for the advice, I will give it a try.
I hope you get the wifi working for you. I use it all of the time and would be lost without it. I would not have purchased this phone if it was without.
Complain with sprint
I WAS GETTING THE SAME THING, I WOULD CONNECT AT HOME USING WIFI, BECAUSE I DIDNT HAVE A INTERNET PLAN, AND THE FIRST MONTH I GOT A HUGE BILL. I COMPLAINED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR UNTILL I GOT TO THE TECH GUYS, NEVER GET SATISFIED WITH WHAT THE CUSTOMER REP TELL YOU, HES GANNA TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE TO PAY NO MATTER WHAT, JUST KEEP PUSING AND ASKING TO SPEAK WITH A MANAGER, ONCE YOU GET TO THAT GUY HE SHOULD SET THINGS STRAIGHT.
FIRST, HE CANCELED MY CHARGE FOR INTERNET USE.
2ND, I WAS GIVEN FULL UNLIMITED INTERNET ACCESS FOR LIFE. (ALONG WITH A OFFICIAL CERTIFICATE BACKING UP THE FREE INTERNET INCASE YOU EVER GET CHARGED FOR ANY INTERNET RELATED FEE.)
iM PERTY SHURE I COULD OF KEPT PUSHING IT AND GET MORE OUT OF IT, BUT FREE INTERNET FOR LIFE WAS A PERTY SWEET DEAL. THATS A 100$ MONTHLY FEATURE FREE.
heres what i did.
first i complained about the fact that the wifi, was a feature of the phone htc, not sprint. why should i be charged for using my own wifi. Dell doesnt charge me when i connect their laptop with my wifi at home. why are you?
i specificly rememberd i also said " the wifi is not for you to be charging, it is not a service that you offer it comes with the phone, so does this mean that your going to charge me, everytime i create a word doccument, every time i play solitare, everytime i take a picture with the phone camera? thats just redicolous, you have no right to charge me for a feature that the phone offers, it has absoloutly nothing to do with sprint.!"
I bet you backup your claim, they will give you stuff too.

I bet the whole deal was your fault. I bet you used the data connection instead of the wifi connection. Because it is impossible for them to track your wifi usage. You let the dialup data connection go thru with is the default connection and rang up the huge bill.
You are the reason there are mandatory data plans with PPC and why our service gets more expensive.

Exactly what I was thinking. Good work on screwing Sprint out of their money somehow though. The customer service rep you were talking to must've been retarded.

Tethering UK

Just wanted to know if you could tether the GS3 without your network knowing?
I've only owned a wifi android tablet - so not clued up on how android handles 3g tethering etc?
There's some UK operators offering unlimited data with the GS3 at the moment...
Most of them allow it anyway. Three do for definite anyway, same with T-Mobile.

You should check whether your data is actually unlimited or (which it usually is) 1GB . I tethered my phone to my tablet and only appears as mobile data on my allowance (o2)

Why can you not download. Ive hit 40gb a month on tmobile tethering and its fine. If you have unlimited, then its fine. You will just get traffic managed on Three if your in the top 5% of their users.
there is literally no way for any netwsork to know that you are tethering. i dont even know why people worry about it.
if you run over your data allowance they will just charge you for the extra. its basically in their interest for you to tether.

Tethering can be detected by browser string interception and network address translation detection quite easily. Many providers around the world do detect and block tethering. I'm with T-Mobile on an account where tethering is not allowed but I've done it loads and exceeded my 3gb limit and they haven't done a thing about it.
Both those methods of detection do not work. NAT makes it HARDER for someone to detect whats going on beyond your device in the local network, not easier. They cant detect what is happening beyond the modem in your phone any more than the cable company can detect whats going on in your physical wired network beyond your router in your home cable line.
Browser string is not device specific and can be modified on most if not all devices by any user.
The only thing stopping you tethering is them saying you cant do it. Been tethering since the days of my nokia 6233 and never had any hassle from providers and never payed an extra penny for the priveledge.

Of course NAT makes detection harder but all sorts of protocols such as rDNS lookup and SMTP leak local IP addresses. Personally I find it unrealistic that any network provider would be employing these techniques, all I'm saying is they are possible.
What interests me is that some networks do block tethering. I'm not sure if any UK ones do, but the question I'd have is how do they do it?
Are they relying on default APN entries and blocking the ones a phone would access for tethering?
Sorry to butt in to this, but I have just installed Salmon rom on my gs2 and since this whenever I try to connect to the net I am taken to a screen from Three that says tethering is not allowed on my unlimited plan. It is turned off on my phone. I have to turn off mobile data then turn it back on again to be able to get on the net. Tried other roms and stock, and all are fine. So Three at least know when you are tetherd and do not allow it.
Basic gist i got of this (via a giff gaff comment) is that they will only guess based on massive download totals in a day or a few hours. So don't go over 1GB for example in a few hours, limit what you download and spread it over days. Giff Gaff (02 network) WILL ban if it detects this way.
Fortunately Ive had no such problems with 3 network

SM-G965U hotspot issues on Metro after leaving Boost.

I really hope I can get some timely help. This site has given me a lot of solutions in the past. The gears of war 5 tech test ends tomorrow and this happened yesterday in the middle of a game...
My s9plus is unlocked for any carrier. Bought it back in January for $150 and it initially was in Verizon. I got with boost and my hotspot always worked using the dun trick when making a new apn. About a month and a half ago, boost forced my phone randomly to connect to a tower that was less efficient. I went from 70mbps down and 10mbps up and 5bar signal to 6mbps down and less than 1 mbps up. My bar strength was at a constant 2/3 and the connection would constantly fluctuate, but I was still able to use the hotspot if I could find a spot in my home the connection would work.
Boost wouldnt correct this issue, and after all the troubleshooting with no solution, I switched to metro a few days ago. No part of me was concerned I would be losing something doing this. I had no clue, but assumed it would be fine.
My connection is 5 bars, lte, speeds are not what I hoped but upload speed is very solid. However, the hotspot will no longer connect my devices to the internet. I only use my xbox one and although it will connect to the hotspot, it will not share the internet. I spent a few hours trying to do several things, including using adb shell to change the dun value to 0. I would appreciate any advice, because where I live has no internet options and I'm freaking out as this was all I had and now its not working despite me doing everything right. I even tried using pdanet and making my computer a hotspot, but a double nat on my xbox isnt enough to let me connect to games, just gives me about 5mbps down and 1 mbps up.

I even tried using pdanet and making my computer a hotspot, but a double nat on my xbox isnt enough to let me connect to games, just gives me about 5mbps down and 1 mbps up.

I would contact your provider and ask to make sure that your phone is compatable with all of the services they have.
Because it is a Verizon phone originally (and even though network unlocked) it may not be able to connect to Metro's systems if it is using verizon's configuration for hotspot. If customer service confirms that a BYOD can use hotspot features, your phone is compatable, your line is properly configured for (and is actually supposed to have) hotspot data access then perhaps try flashing the firmware for MetroPCS and see if that helps. I know that my sprint phone had some stuff on it that was configured for Sprint so it would have never worked even after network unlocking and using a different provider. Flashing the phone with T-Mobile firmware solved that problem...

I should clarify that I did have access, I just hit the data cap. None of the steps I used helped me to use my hotspot after the data limit for metro

So you hit a hotspot data cap with MetroPCS and you want to bypass/circumvent that so you can continue to use the hotspot?
If the above is correct then you essentially won't get any help here because of what your asking to do..
Whether or not anyone agrees/disagrees with the data cap you paid for a service that gives you a set amount of gigabytes for hotspot use. Attempting to bypass/circumvent that data cap so you can use more then what was included in the service can be construed as theft.
Either purchase additional buckets of data for use, wait until the data cap resets or find a better provider that offers you a larger (or unlimited) amount of data for use with hotspot functionality.

I could post atleast 10 other threads on xda specifically showing people how to do what I'm asking, but I'm not really asking for your permission my friend, just anyone's advice if they know why I was never affected on boost when using dun in my apn, but dun and adb shell editing didnt work with metro, and what I could do about it.

While it maybe true other threads on the subject, that doesn't mean they (or you) are in the right either. I was just stating a fact that what your trying to do can be construed as theft.
Within regards to why you essentially won't get much help here because of what your trying to do, I should have been more clear on the meaning behind that. Essentially the problem is how the provider detects and/or handles hotspot data. In this case it is obvious that MetroPCS has a different method for handling and/or detecting hotspot data use then Boost Mobile. I am not sure if anyone here would have the technical insight on what one does over the other as far as hotspot data... Granted it is always a possibility someone does, but I haven't seen many posts that indicate discussions go into those kinds of discussions.
I am poking around on the internet to see if I can find something that gives more technical details on how MetroPCS and Boost deal with hotspot data. Given that I currently have a severe thunderstorm in my area I don't know how much I can get accomplished before the power goes out (it's a pretty nasty storm).
