so i have been hearing about the much anticipated "2.1 update 1" update that will enable pinch zoom on maps and browser applications.
i havent recieved it yet (im in canada so i figure the next few days will bring it to me) BUT i am debating what to do
xda peeps have already released a dual touch capable update, that is supposedly functional in all multitouch capable applications.
so i have a few options... wait for the official release and take it, or root and go the back door XDA way..... i have had my X10 for a few weeks now, i love it but i notice its a bit laggy considering the hardware.
so, a few questions...
1) should i wait for the SE official and keep my phone stock? (to maintain warranty in case of hardware problems)
2) in that case if i want full dual touch capability, can i do the XDA dual touch root mod AFTER i get the SE update?
3) if i decide to root and follow some of the guides posted all over this forum to speed up and improve my phone, is my warranty void? am i f***** if i have a harware problem? cuz i just got this phone and dont want to void my warranty so quickly because i have heard of some potential hardware problems....
i know this is a big post, but its my first and im really hoping that i get better responses than some of the other android based forums i have tried in the past few days.
thanks in advance! please help me ouutttt i want to learnn

I have a T-Mobile G2 and although I've read earlier today that they are 'working' on getting the update ready. I'd rather just have the normal version of Sense that everyone else has
I've tried reading through lots of topics here but I'm a bit confused what I need to do. Do I need to root my phone ? Unlock it ?
As you can probably tell I'm new to Android so I don't really know much about it
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
Yes, T-Mobile had to be dragged kinking and screaming into making an announcement. Now that they have I shall wait.
It seems the only benefit of getting the T-Mobile Upgrade is that you get to keep your warranty apart from that it's just the same but with a few T-Mobile logo's chucked in...
..and not having to go through the risks of 'hacking' your phone aswell

well even if you get it unlocked from what iam reading it make not a S**** of difference you still cannot use updates from HTC. I have rooted my tmob with custom rom seems to work ok alot faster then tmobs stock rom but i am sure there official update will be here very very soon
And pigs might grow wings and start aerial assaults...
I have no faith in T-Mobile's ability to provide a timely ROM upgrade, maybe by Xmas. I would love them to prove me wrong of course.
Go to Modaco and follow the instructions carefully to install their custom rom, if any steps in the procedure give you cause to be concerned, DONT do it.
And always make backups of your data.
And make sure you backup your data.
Yes, I know I repeated myself, but trust me, its a major point if you are going to mess around with roms.
Hi there, I'm a Dream and Desire owner who has rooted both handsets and I'm reasonably confident I can follow instructions
A colleague at work has just ordered the Hero on Orange (UK), and she's gone online and started reading up on it - first mistake! She's come across a few complaints concerning the Orange ROM and she's asked me "the phone guy" how easy it is to load the HTC ROM onto her phone.
I was caught on the hop, having never even seen a Hero in real life, nor followed the XDA forums for this particular handset. I have a few questions for you guys, if you don't mind - will likely save me hours of reading
1. What version of Android are Orange dishing out on their Heros atm? Donut or Eclair?
2. Depending on the answer to above, please point me in the direction of a rooting guide for the thing.
3. If I can root, what's the best developer ROM around for SPEED and STABILITY? This is a one time thing, I don't want her running back to me every other week, with problems that I can't solve there and then without flashing the thing all the time.
4. If root can't be achieved, can I use a goldcard method to load up the HTC ROM instead? Show me where/how please.
5. What are the known problems with the Orange ROMs - is it even worth me going to the trouble? Will loading up the HTC ROM make a noticeable difference for her?
Finally, she hasn't even got the thing yet, and since I've never had it I can't imagine what probs she may run into. It would be nice to educate her and get on these forums reading and doing stuff herself, but I don't think that will happen tbh. With that in mind I'm looking for suggestions to optimise the thing for permanent daily use. I don't want bleeding edge, just as much performance as I can squeeze out of it without compromising reliability.
Many thanks for your replies - don't be afraid to get technical with me!

1) Should be 1.5 (can't remember codename) as I don't think they have finished customising their own 2.1 ROM.
I doubt many carriers will do 2.1 on shipped phones, as hero is at end of life tbh and likely won't be made in large enough quantities to justify using new ROM.
2) http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=375
3) VillainROM 12 or any other final GSM WWE should be fine. Just test if a little and it should be fine. Watch out for OC settings if you want it to be noob-proof. Go for safe settings.
4) That guide explains all methods
5) No idea. IMHO carrier ROMs are all crap, just like stock ones. No root is the big one for me.
Just install a decent ROM for this last point. Anything recent that's been up for a while without many updates should be fine
Thanks anon2122, that helps me out a lot

Unfortunately not right now, as the server appears to be down
But it will be back soon. When it is, go to development forum, then in the list of announcements is one for radio rom download links.
Click that, and take the second newest one iirc. Or read the later posts for people confirming which version works on which network.

Hello there,
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a very happy 2012.
I am an phone geek and I have an LG Optimus One, neither modded nor even updated once (curses to the blasted firmware update drivers). In this community of phone users, I feel like chicken- I am scared at the very thought of toying with the OS and hardware, even though I have no fear of OEM updates. And being on a tight budget I can't afford to damage my phone due to a modding goof-up.
My question is: HOW DO YOU INCREASE THE PERFORMANCE OF AN LG OPTIMUS ONE P500(AKA THE V, PHOENIX) WITHOUT ANY MODDING?
If there is any app that safely does the task, tell me please. I use TasKiller and the memory optimizer inside NetQin antivirus.
Help me!!!!

This is what I don't want from any of you as a reply:
"Use a kernel, man."
"Why don't you root your phone?"
"Use a custom OS like CyanogenMod!"
"You should overclock your phone, it's very easy..."
and the dumbest of all replies:
"You should sell your phone and buy something like a Galaxy or Wildfire...."
or "I know a guy, he's an expert, dude, you should give your phone to him to mod..."
I won't give my phone to ANYBODY, YOU HEAR? ANYBODY!unless he's an authorized LG service engineer or so.
Waiting for a reply ASAP.
Then ask Santa Claus......

In that case it will take you some time to realize that you are the dumb one, not us.
hhhhhhhhhhhh he is like...
I know all the answers but i cant and i still want the best xD
Long explanation in short: You can't.
Yeah it's weird that you want to improve your phone while shooting down the very solutions to your problems. I know the feeling though of being scared to screw up your phone.
I screwed mine up in like three days after trying to install custom recovery. I don't know what went wrong. It was rooted just fine but this was during those times without Clockwork Recovery support and amonra needed a PC to be installed (didn't know about Terminal emulator until after). Brought the phone to LG since it was still under warranty. They fixed it a week after.
Then I went back to trying and read more and asked more questions about the stuff I was doing to my phone. The developing support for this phone is awesome. You really shouldnt be afraid anymore.
And yeah there really isnt a lot you can do to improve your phone's performance without a custom rom + a new kernel + overclocking... all of which you don't like to do
Read, read, read, read, than read some more... Hope to God you have a warranty on your phone...

Sorry, but if you want better performance without messing with the software at the very least, you need to buy a better phone.
As long as you read instructions carefully you will be fine. Most of us O1 users were first time rooters, but we pulled through. There is no app that give give you the power of a galaxy s II.

O1 is already a good performer. If you don't want to take rist, just stop visiting XDA! You'll certainly be a more satisified person, believe me!

Of course know that the Optimus can't become a Galaxy S II, but still there must be some trick that can boost the power of the phone. I finally fixed the drivers and now it's running LG's 2.3.3 Gingerbread, and there has been a huge increase. I know I am a bit shameless and crazy, but still if you know anything that could make my day, I will be happy to hear.

Use a launcher from android market instead of the LG one. It will make your homescreen and app drawer FEEL smoother without actually changing anything. I recommend Launcher Pro.
Beside that....nope, there's nothing much else you can really do. Honestly rooting, flashing roms etc is very easy and risk free if you're good at following instructions.
Hey guys,
It's been a while since I've posted in this forum, and it's cause I got a new phone. Right now however, my mom would like to use my phone and I was wondering if someone could bring me up to date on everything that's happened. When I left the x10 scene, I remember unlocking the bootloader was not really necessary cause it didn't really give us much more since the bootloader has been bypassed. Has this changed? Is there any new benefit to unlocking the bootloader now? Also I remembered Wolf's TW Gingerbread rom was the most stable one back then and the quickest. Is that still true? I want to give my mom a smooth and good experience on my phone. Oh and if someone could recommend me a good app that could right chinese words by like drawing the characters out, that would be great.
Thanks guys
hi everyone new to the group.i have a droid razr ver.2.3.6 and system ver.6.12.173.xt912 en ,us.i would like to root my phone to the ICS can anyone help me with this.thanks
Answer
Ok, first things first.
1- ICS isn't released yet. Looks like May/June, maybe sooner. There is a pre-alpha ROM out there, it isn't fully functional and there are a lot of bugs and glitches. I have it on my safe system to test it out.
2- Rooting your phone isn't just clicking a button. In a sense it is, but you need to be very aware of the legality of rooting. It WILL void your warranty. It MAY brick your phone. I suggest you look around the forum for questions regarding rooting. There are plenty of resources to help you out, make sure you do all your homework on rooting, what it does and what the pros and cons are.
At the end of the day, once you're rooted and you start flashing ROMs, there's always the possibility that you will have a 700 dollar paperweight. Not to discourage you, but it's a real possibility.
thanks for the reply
