[Q] PS3 Tether with Vista? - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have done plenty of searching these forums and the internet for the answer to my problem and I can not find one. Hopefully someone will have some insight. Here is what is about to cause me to ram my head so hard into a rock wall that it releases a 10.0 earth quake on the Richter scale:
I live in the middle of no where (just moved) so I do not have access to a cable internet connection. I get cell service. I want to use my PS3 to play some online games. I should be able to give my PS3 internet through my phone (rooted or not).
I can't.
Here is my setup:
PC: Vista (I know, crap...blah, blah, blah...I hate it, but it functions for school)
Phone: Droid Eris, Rooted, FroShedYp-CM6.2-RC1-Desirec.
What I've done:
Started with the Rooted Wireless tether app that came with phone, set it up, PC picked it up, I could browse the internet, use Ventrillo, ect. I then connected the Ethernet cable to my PC from PS3. PC took a while to identify it and it kept re-identifying it. In my network settings I check the the "allow sharing, blah, blah, blah" for the wireless network. I go to my PS3 and test the wired connection. It fails!!!!
Well, crap! Now what? Oooo, I have a wired tether rooted app. Lets try that. So I hook up the wired tether and follow same process as above. Nothing. [email protected]!
Ok, so now hair is being pulled out of my head! The light turns on. I have EasyTether and that is supposed to do what I want (It better because I paid money for it, right?). I go to the website and follow their instructions.............still nothing!
Now it is time to use my good friend Google. I get on and find a YouTube video of some guy doing what I want but with a Windows 7 OS. AND IT WORKS! Awesome! He did everything I did; the only difference was Windows 7.
So, I now has an idea . I go grab my Grandpa's laptop that has Windows 7. I follow the steps like I saw in the video and are written everywhere. The closest I get now is getting an IP address for the PS3 and then the internet connection fails! AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!
I do some more research online and run across a program (Conectify) that I am supposed to need now. Well, this doesn't help. I still don't have Windows 7 on MY PC which is where I need to run this new network out of!
Oh yea, and now my PC does not pick up my Rooted Wireless App......at ALL!
Please XDA, someone out there must be able to help!!!!!
Regards,
-Grimsblood

Did you use a cross-over cable? Ethernet connects asymmetrically, you need a certain cable that will in effect turn the ethernet in port on your computer into an ethernet out.

And also tell Windows Vista to share your internet connection (via the Ethernet cable).

I did not know that. How do you tell the difference between ethernet cables? (I used a Belkin FastCAT 5e)

How is this done? I mean is it the same as enabling the shared settings or did Microsoft hide this option in some deep dark corner?

The cable will specifically state that it is a crossover cable, since it won't do anyone any good who is using it for any other sort of network structure, also most cable you encounter will be standard. If it doesn't, compare the two ends, if the wires inside are identical, it's a straight through cable, if they are not it's crossover.

Also you can purchase adapters. Just search walmart for crossover cable, I'm sure other places have them too.
Wow, that picture is damn big, sorry.

has anyone tried to do this with the wireless?

Don't see why it shouldn't work. I use Wireless Tether for Root all the time, with many different devices. Just the other day I used it so a guy on an Evo4G could watch YouTube... haha **** Sprint.

I just checked and do not have a crossover cable. I will have to get one and try again.

You are supposed to be able to do this wirelessly. I originally found out to do it wirelessly. It appears my problem is the cable from laptop to PS3.

Note that I'm creating these instructions using Windows 7 as an example. Under Vista it should be very similar though.
In your notification tray, right-click on the built-in Windows network notification icon and choose "Open Network and Sharing Center".
On the left side, choose "Change adapter settings". Right-click on the working network connection on your computer and choose "Properties".
Choose the "Sharing" tab. At this point, you should be able to click the link at the bottom of the Sharing tab that says "Using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)" to find out the rest of anything you might need to know if it doesn't seem self-explanatory from this point on.
I forget if Vista had any differences to these, but I don't think it was anything TOO major.
Also note that sometimes in the past ICS would not work reliably for me, and I was able to get around it and instead, at the step before I say to right-click on the working network connection, do this instead:
While holding down the Control (Ctrl) key on your keyboard, click on the source and destination network connections (your tethered Android network and your Local Area Connection). You can let go of the Control button then. Then right-click over either of those two you selected and choose "Bridge Connections".
Note that if your network configuration changes in the future, or you want to try ICS, you'll have to UN-bridge those connections. The way you do that is that after you bridge them, "Network Connections" will list one more network connection, the resultant "Network Bridge". Just delete this Network Bridge and they'll un-bridge.
Good luck!

i just use pdanet app...plug into computer....connect....go to neywork settings, share connection via usb or somethin...before turnin on ps3 i plug in the ethernet cable into the laptop....turn ps3 on..connect and works windows7 idk y it couldnt work wit vista no lag at all online too i also live in middle of npwhere with only satelite or usb cards from verizon n tmo they suck compared to my phone yet both suppose to have 3g speeds....
K3V

I would get your phone rooted (if not already) then do wireless tether for root users. It lets your phone become a wifi hotspot. If you get cell signal, you will be able to transmit wifi and hook up your PS to the wifi signal. Just make sure to keep your phone plugged in so it doesn't use up all the battery and you get disconnected.

[APP] WIFI Remote Access: Remote control, SMS and File transfer through a web browser

Hi,
Here is a free application I've developed for Windows Mobile 6.x.
http://www.julien-manici.com/windows_mobile_wifi_remote_access/
It's basically a web server (and FTP server) that runs on your device so that you can browse its content from a web browser. No software install computer side.
It works either with :
-a WIFI connection,
-an USB connection (Windows Mobile Device Center or -ActiveSync needs to be installed and Advanced networking functionnality must not have been disabled on the device)
It serves mostly html pages, but for pictures browsing under Internet Explorer 7/8 it will show a .net/WPF/3D based UI that brings support for multiple file upload (any file type, not just pictures)
Now available on the English-US marketplace :
Basic version (free) :

just played with it for a minute - really freaking cool. Phenominal concept.
Is it possible for this to work over 3G? In my area, the 3G connection is ridiculously fast.

That would be indeed good.
I did nothing to prevent incoming request from connected network interfaces.
This means a connection could come from WIFI, usb with advanced networking enabled, or 3G. (note that it always ask you to authorize the incoming connection)
But that will probably not work with 3G, because most mobile network operators don't provide a public IP address, but a private IP address with a NAT routing system. No way to etablish a connection from another computer on the internet. (It can be possible only from another device in the same operator network).
Maybe there are some mobile operator who provide public IP addresses to their customers, in this case, this should work. But I'm not aware of any mobile operator doing that
This is also the reason why there haven't been massive ownage of jailbreaked iphones with ssh enabled with alpine root pwd! (until a few weeks ago in a specific mobile operator network)
Anyway I will probably build an azure based service someday (if there is enough demand) to provide some sort of relay to make this feature possible. But I won't be able to provide it for free, since windows azure hosting is not free. I'm thinking to do that to enable SMS sending/reading from a computer anytime, as Exchange 2010 does.
a login system would be able to take care of that.. but would require a public server to translate logins from the phone and their 3G IPs to the PC side of it..
Just food for thought
looks cool.. have linked to it from here : http://www.1800pocketpc.com/2009/11/20/wifi-remote-access-explore-the-content-of-your-windows-phone-from-your-computer-using-wifi.html
looks good,will try it later.
I must say, this is one nice app. Great beginning and looking forward to future updates.
Awesome.
Great Work.

you mean, the phone should connect to the user computer to etablish direct connection over the internet? (since the opposite is not possible)
sure, that is possible but it would need a software running on the user computer and it will not work for people behind a NAT or firewall. They will have to configure their nat/firewall to allow incoming connection to their computer.
So, there's no easy solution , except using a server to allow communication between the windows mobile device and the computer, which would cost me money to operate. But I don't like the fact that the users data would transit to my server. It would be a big responsability, security speaking. Thus, I'm still thinking about it.

the application is free and the final release (available in a few days) will be free too, but the current beta is time bombed, because I was afraid to lose control in case there would be a major bug in the beta : there is no auto update system, and I know some people already put it on rapidshare, that's why I put a time bomb in the beta version.
However I'm thinking to sell it on the marketplace (French and US) for 2$, because this application is a lot of work... but it will still be available for free outside the marketplace.
So, if you like the final release, you will be able to pay for it if you want to support me!

I think you can do this via 3G using openVPN for the windows mobile. I don't see why this wouldn't work.
I'm getting a 403 Error Access is forbidden no matter what password I'm using. I even try the preview on the device and still get the error.
I have a Raphael (Fuze) using WiFi
works great!
Great program! I'm getting an error message that it's not finding some of the files on my storage card, but when I type the directory in manually it works. Maybe it's because my music files are in "My Ringtones" and not "My Music"
Ok, this may be a stupid question, but which of the IP addresses do you use? It shows 2 on my phone.
Not that it really matters - both of them time out on me

Nice, I didn't think about that!
You could indeed connect via 3G using a VPN solution, if you have a VPN server at home and the appropriate routing configuration (or use the windows VPN creation assistant), it will be the same as if the device is directly connected to the local network, thus it should be reachable.

what is your device language?
did you use any special character for the password?
try to go in settings, and choose a new password using only characters from the english alphabet, I think it's an issue with character encoding! I think didn't test enough this part

[Q] USB Tether on atrix?

anyone know how to do this? was standard on my WM device..
+1 interested in this as well.
Have you tried http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/ ?

Moved as not android development
A 'friend' has an Atrix that is rooted and has the APN fix that allows you to tether it via Wifi.. 'He' let me install this app (v1.4) on 'his' Atrix, seems to work fine. Prompts for root access to start and disable tethering. Also allows you to select the subnet used for the network connection.
My only concern would be does this show up as 'tethering' to ATT??

Prob not as it's just rerouting wifi traffic through the regular wap.cingular apn (as opposed to isp.cingular for tethering). As long as you don't have unusually high data usage, you should be able to slip under the wire.

I tried it. You have to modify the kernel to support RNDIS on the Atrix - which I'm not about to do, so...no go...wish I did have something like that though...I don't want something that requires a client-side app to interface....

You need to read the whole thread. Your phone needs to be rooted and usb debug mode has to be off. Once you have your phone connected to your computer via usb and you run the app, your computer should receive an ip address from the phone as if you're plugged in to a router (which your phone technically is). No need to set up a dial-up networking connection.

Anyway, as the apps name says, this allows you to control your Sony Ericsson and now all android phones too..
You can do backups, send messages and make phone calls on your pc, manage files, etc.. All this via WIFI, Bluetooth or USB Cable!
You can download by going to the official website.
i use this too on my k750i,n now its compatible for android's SonEr,absolutely for my lovely x8
so what does this actually do?
It's an application for windows that allows you to control and manage your phone..

1 question,
can u connected ur x8 via wifi on it?

First, you need to have your phone connected to wifi.. then your pc needs to be connected to the same router as the phone.. and don't forget to allow MyPhoneExplorer in firewall rules, only that way you will connect your phone via wifi..

To connect the phone via wifi, you need to install the myphoneexplorer client app from the marker and run it every time you want to connect your X8 to MyPhoneEx. To connect it via usb, the client needs to run on the phone and debugging mode needs to be activated. Via bluetooth, I never tried, but should be the same.
And as LuisDias mentioned, when you connect via wifi you have to connect to the same router as the computer is connected.

Ad Hoc networks always gets your connection down, don't know way but when I use adhoc to connect my phone, the connection drops..
If you want to connect your phone to the pc without usingthe router, I advice you to use Connectify.. It allows you to create a wifi network, like your laptop was the router..
If you had any problem configuring that, send me a PM and will post a video on youtube to show you how to do it..
i have been using it since i got z530i.it's a great app.
Nice . . . ^ ^
The best thing about it, is it's "Sync with Outlook"-function! You can write messages, backup your calendar and contacts and all your apps.
It's really worth donating!

Torrenting

I just switched from Sprint to Verizon this week and I have discovered that Verizon and torrenting don't seem to go hand in hand.
There seems to be two issues:
1. After downloading a torrent file and opening it up in an appropriate program (say uTorrent for example) it wont connect to any peers. (or so I hear from those who have attempted this, not me of course)
2. If Verizon finds out that you are torrenting, they will rain all sorts of hell down upon you.
I'm wondering (strictly out of curiosity of course) if there is any way to mask the fact that I'm torrenting (of course only hypothetically, I wouldn't torrent, that's illegal apparently)?
Additionally, if I were to tether my computer through my phone, would they still be able to tell, and is there any way of masking that as well (again, strictly hypothetical)?
Thanks

Additionally, if I were to tether my computer through my phone, would they still be able to tell, and is there any way of masking that as well (again, strictly hypothetical)?
Thanks

Two things come to mind that prevent torrenting from working on Verizon.
One is the ToS say we can't use "peer–to–peer (P2P) file–sharing applications" as this would degrade the service. As for using your computer and trying I doubt it will do any good since the your still using Verizon's wireless network. It's probable Verizon might have measures in place to detect and block torrent activity (and specific other activity they don't allow on there network).
Second is that you probably have a private IP address and not a public one. Unless you pay the $500.00 fee to get a public IP address you are assigned a private IP address... Because of this it is not possible for anyone to connect directly to the device. Depending on where you go for your torrents (and the BT client configuration of whom your connecting to) if your not connectable then you won't be able to download...
As for hiding your activity you could possibly run an encrypted VPN connection of some kind and see if that helps. If you have a home computer you might be able to set this up easily, but the reliability and download/upload speeds would be limited to the internet connection of the VPN server.
I've been torrenting and tethering daily for the last 2 years with no problem.
Thanks

Thanks for your response, this leads me though to two (new) questions:
1. For some reason when I was with Sprint, I had no problem with this, which leads me to wonder if it cant be managed with Verizon as well.
2. Are there any good methods for running a VPN directly from my phone, and will it indeed hide my activity from Verizon?
Thanks again

Thanks, I guess I'll keep trying then, Although I found one way to get it to work. If I start the torrent while my phone is connected to my home wifi (which is not as fast), and then turn off the wifi on my phone, the torrent will keep running fine. It seems as though (for me at least) I cant connect to any peers while on my phones internet, but once connected it will download just fine.

Can you shed some light on how you are able to do this? What torrent client works for you? Is there any special configurations/roms/etc. you have installed that make the torrent client work?
Are you running a BT client on a computer tethered to the mobile device?
.... I tether and torrent like a mad man. Use private trackers like bitsoup.me and force encryption.. Disable local peer discovery and dht and your fine.

Been doing it also. I rarely torrent but use adownloader (try their website) i think the play store is restricted.
Tether all the time without any problems. Unlimited data plan.

thanks, how do do all those things?
Utorrent wouldn't work on my Bionic but tTorrent lite from play store worked like a champ so I use that on my GS4

I'm just running Eclipse 2.0 and using Ttorrent. But the ROM shouldn't have anything to do with it. Not sure why it wouldn't work, I've been using ttorrent since my droid incredible days.
As far as tethering goes, most Roms will have the built in tether app working out of the box. If not, the WiFi tether app found from Google code works well.
I tether and use atorrent on my phone and utorrent with no problems
I call bs.

I torrent and watch Netflix on my Tv by tethering. This is my household internet and has been for over six months. My line alone I use 100-200gb a month. and my wife also has unlimited and does the same when I'm not home.

Possible to connect to wifi AND cellular data at same time?

Hi all. I have a new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV s-edition 2017, who got app control through wifi spot from car. However, the wifi range is horrible, so I was wondering if you guys know of any phone that can be connected to both wifi net (without internet) and same time connected to internet through cellular data (3g or 4g)
What I want:
Have a phone in car, connected to the cars wifi net (no internet) and through perhaps an app like airdroid, connect to that phone, and that way connect to the car through internet.
I have tried this with honor 7, but this so called smart phone, either is on wifi with no internet, or cellular data with internet. It will not work on both nets at same time.
Is the any android phone this would work on, or is there any workaround/hack to make this work. Surely, this has to be possible?
-Thanx, Ray

If your android running on marshmallow then there is a option in developer setting of cellular data always active. Turn that feature on and connect to mobile data and wifi simultaneously.
Ashwinirg answered the question, but I want to throw in that there are services, like Speedify, which claim some sort of "channel bonding" that merge your WiFi with your data connection to enhance your speed. I have no idea if Speedify or similar services actually work, but if you're interesting in enabling wifi + cellular data together, you might want to look into those services also.

Don't know if it is available in android nougat but it may be it available on marshmallow then it also available in Nougat..
Update:
So I bought myself a Lenovo p2, cause of its bigger battery, but it seems like it's not able to go between cellular data and wifi seamlessly like honor 7 did. It got the same options in developer mode, but it's not working.

Certain apps work if set right. It's kind of like downloading a torrent. Multiple connections work together to transfer the same file resulting in much faster speeds.
