A 'friend' has an Atrix that is rooted and has the APN fix that allows you to tether it via Wifi.. 'He' let me install this app (v1.4) on 'his' Atrix, seems to work fine. Prompts for root access to start and disable tethering. Also allows you to select the subnet used for the network connection.
My only concern would be does this show up as 'tethering' to ATT??

Prob not as it's just rerouting wifi traffic through the regular wap.cingular apn (as opposed to isp.cingular for tethering). As long as you don't have unusually high data usage, you should be able to slip under the wire.

I tried it. You have to modify the kernel to support RNDIS on the Atrix - which I'm not about to do, so...no go...wish I did have something like that though...I don't want something that requires a client-side app to interface....

Which version did you install? I tried v1.4 from here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/downloads/list and it installed fine. I started the wired tether, but the computer didn't register an IP address with the phone.... Would LOVE to learn how you got this to work!

You need to read the whole thread. Your phone needs to be rooted and usb debug mode has to be off. Once you have your phone connected to your computer via usb and you run the app, your computer should receive an ip address from the phone as if you're plugged in to a router (which your phone technically is). No need to set up a dial-up networking connection.

I have done plenty of searching these forums and the internet for the answer to my problem and I can not find one. Hopefully someone will have some insight. Here is what is about to cause me to ram my head so hard into a rock wall that it releases a 10.0 earth quake on the Richter scale:
I live in the middle of no where (just moved) so I do not have access to a cable internet connection. I get cell service. I want to use my PS3 to play some online games. I should be able to give my PS3 internet through my phone (rooted or not).
I can't.
Here is my setup:
PC: Vista (I know, crap...blah, blah, blah...I hate it, but it functions for school)
Phone: Droid Eris, Rooted, FroShedYp-CM6.2-RC1-Desirec.
What I've done:
Started with the Rooted Wireless tether app that came with phone, set it up, PC picked it up, I could browse the internet, use Ventrillo, ect. I then connected the Ethernet cable to my PC from PS3. PC took a while to identify it and it kept re-identifying it. In my network settings I check the the "allow sharing, blah, blah, blah" for the wireless network. I go to my PS3 and test the wired connection. It fails!!!!
Well, crap! Now what? Oooo, I have a wired tether rooted app. Lets try that. So I hook up the wired tether and follow same process as above. Nothing. [email protected]!
Ok, so now hair is being pulled out of my head! The light turns on. I have EasyTether and that is supposed to do what I want (It better because I paid money for it, right?). I go to the website and follow their instructions.............still nothing!
Now it is time to use my good friend Google. I get on and find a YouTube video of some guy doing what I want but with a Windows 7 OS. AND IT WORKS! Awesome! He did everything I did; the only difference was Windows 7.
So, I now has an idea . I go grab my Grandpa's laptop that has Windows 7. I follow the steps like I saw in the video and are written everywhere. The closest I get now is getting an IP address for the PS3 and then the internet connection fails! AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!
I do some more research online and run across a program (Conectify) that I am supposed to need now. Well, this doesn't help. I still don't have Windows 7 on MY PC which is where I need to run this new network out of!
Oh yea, and now my PC does not pick up my Rooted Wireless App......at ALL!
Please XDA, someone out there must be able to help!!!!!
Regards,
-Grimsblood
Did you use a cross-over cable? Ethernet connects asymmetrically, you need a certain cable that will in effect turn the ethernet in port on your computer into an ethernet out.
And also tell Windows Vista to share your internet connection (via the Ethernet cable).

How is this done? I mean is it the same as enabling the shared settings or did Microsoft hide this option in some deep dark corner?
The cable will specifically state that it is a crossover cable, since it won't do anyone any good who is using it for any other sort of network structure, also most cable you encounter will be standard. If it doesn't, compare the two ends, if the wires inside are identical, it's a straight through cable, if they are not it's crossover.

Also you can purchase adapters. Just search walmart for crossover cable, I'm sure other places have them too.

Don't see why it shouldn't work. I use Wireless Tether for Root all the time, with many different devices. Just the other day I used it so a guy on an Evo4G could watch YouTube... haha **** Sprint.
I just checked and do not have a crossover cable. I will have to get one and try again.

You are supposed to be able to do this wirelessly. I originally found out to do it wirelessly. It appears my problem is the cable from laptop to PS3.

Note that I'm creating these instructions using Windows 7 as an example. Under Vista it should be very similar though.
In your notification tray, right-click on the built-in Windows network notification icon and choose "Open Network and Sharing Center".
On the left side, choose "Change adapter settings". Right-click on the working network connection on your computer and choose "Properties".
Choose the "Sharing" tab. At this point, you should be able to click the link at the bottom of the Sharing tab that says "Using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)" to find out the rest of anything you might need to know if it doesn't seem self-explanatory from this point on.
I forget if Vista had any differences to these, but I don't think it was anything TOO major.
Also note that sometimes in the past ICS would not work reliably for me, and I was able to get around it and instead, at the step before I say to right-click on the working network connection, do this instead:
While holding down the Control (Ctrl) key on your keyboard, click on the source and destination network connections (your tethered Android network and your Local Area Connection). You can let go of the Control button then. Then right-click over either of those two you selected and choose "Bridge Connections".
Note that if your network configuration changes in the future, or you want to try ICS, you'll have to UN-bridge those connections. The way you do that is that after you bridge them, "Network Connections" will list one more network connection, the resultant "Network Bridge". Just delete this Network Bridge and they'll un-bridge.
Good luck!
i just use pdanet app...plug into computer....connect....go to neywork settings, share connection via usb or somethin...before turnin on ps3 i plug in the ethernet cable into the laptop....turn ps3 on..connect and works windows7 idk y it couldnt work wit vista no lag at all online too i also live in middle of npwhere with only satelite or usb cards from verizon n tmo they suck compared to my phone yet both suppose to have 3g speeds....

I would get your phone rooted (if not already) then do wireless tether for root users. It lets your phone become a wifi hotspot. If you get cell signal, you will be able to transmit wifi and hook up your PS to the wifi signal. Just make sure to keep your phone plugged in so it doesn't use up all the battery and you get disconnected.

Anyway, as the apps name says, this allows you to control your Sony Ericsson and now all android phones too..
You can do backups, send messages and make phone calls on your pc, manage files, etc.. All this via WIFI, Bluetooth or USB Cable!
You can download by going to the official website.

1 question,
can u connected ur x8 via wifi on it?
until now,i cant. only via USB n i dont understand to setting it...
First, you need to have your phone connected to wifi.. then your pc needs to be connected to the same router as the phone.. and don't forget to allow MyPhoneExplorer in firewall rules, only that way you will connect your phone via wifi..

To connect the phone via wifi, you need to install the myphoneexplorer client app from the marker and run it every time you want to connect your X8 to MyPhoneEx. To connect it via usb, the client needs to run on the phone and debugging mode needs to be activated. Via bluetooth, I never tried, but should be the same.
And as LuisDias mentioned, when you connect via wifi you have to connect to the same router as the computer is connected.

Ad Hoc networks always gets your connection down, don't know way but when I use adhoc to connect my phone, the connection drops..
If you want to connect your phone to the pc without usingthe router, I advice you to use Connectify.. It allows you to create a wifi network, like your laptop was the router..
If you had any problem configuring that, send me a PM and will post a video on youtube to show you how to do it..
i have been using it since i got z530i.it's a great app.
Nice . . . ^ ^
The best thing about it, is it's "Sync with Outlook"-function! You can write messages, backup your calendar and contacts and all your apps.
It's really worth donating!
FYI tried Barnacle WIFI Tether from the market with the temp root n it works!

Scroll through the list and choose EVO 4G
you can now start tethering

any other wifi tether apps working besides barnacle?

barnacle wifi no go
no matter what i do i cant get barnacle wifi to work with my evo 3d,I've read the threads and done everything including switching my phone between usb tether charge only, disk only and so on...keeps sayin cannot connect.

any idea why some device is not working? due to lack of tether plan?
for root phone, if just copy other tether apk to it, will it work?
Mine is rooted and tethering manager removed just like yours.
The problem is probably with your other devices that try to use the wi-fi hotspot. They are not compatible with your phone. Do they all support the WPA2 PSK encrytion? I'm not sure if the phone is using WPA2 AES encryption or WPA2 TKIP encryption.
Use letters and numbers for the password if you don't do it already.
That fixed it for me when it it didn't worked, well was on a Xperia Arc but should work for you, too.

Select <Mobile networks> and you will get this screen:
Select <Access Point Names>. when you come to the Access Point Page you click in the top right corner and select <New APN>.
This is the tricky part where you fill in the GSM operators settings. You can find settings for the most popular networks here. If your operator is not included you will have to ask the operator. The screenshot below shows the settings for Safaricom, Kenya:
When all settings are filled in press the arrow in the lower left corner and you are done.

Care to elaborate a bit? I tried and did not have much success, did you? If so can you please post some pictures of it working?

9.4.2.15

Sorry 2all
Sorry to all this will not work. I take that manual from other site. It say Andtoid 4 3G Setup (original link in #1 post). I test it my self. No success.
Than i unpakced firmware to find out files like (gprs, pppd-ril.options, usb_wwan.ko, etc), some of them presents in firmware, others dissmised.
So the only way getting 3G via dongle, is custom firmware.

Well if u have to use 3g/data connection outside wifi range just use your cellphone as a wifi hotspot. Most people carry a cell and most of todays phones can do this

thanks, i know how to go to web via phone by changing wpa_suplicant2 file. But i want to connect via dongle.
I dont know how real this is, I have rooted my TF201 and no where do I see the mobile network on a stock rom, I have it on my phone yet I dont have it here, and also there would have to be drivers for the USB modem to be entered, this isnt a simple task, the only one i have found is in the UMTS app from the market, and even then this doesnt work, I just want a USB modem installed, I dont want to use my phone as the WIFI defeats the purpose of having a USB modem, surely someone has done this on a stock rom
