[Q] Root help please - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

MODS-Please move if i am posting in the wrong section.
I am having a problem rooting my phone using the guide on xda( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711907 ) I can run the first step fine no errors. I run the second step all seems to go well except for the option box that should pop up.
The guide says to re-install PC companion which i have done now three times, with no success. What can I try to do? I am using a X10a, vista 32 bit. I skimmed every page of the 300 page thread, i have tried the first step over again and i still get to the same problem. I have attached a screen shot of the dialog box.
Please help
Thanks

Heres a quicker solution.
Go to the Developers forum in this X10 section and download the flash tool 0.2.6 from there.
Unzip it and go into it's unzip folder run X10FlashTool.exe and with your X10 connected to your PC. Press the "Root" button.
Then download busybox from market and Titanium backup.
Xrecovery is a good thing to install too but I think you have to get the apk file from here if I recall.

It says that program is for 2.1 I am still on 1.6

Would I brick my phone if i tried rooting with a different method?

I used the FlashTool to upgrade to Generic 2.1.A.0.435 a couple days ago, so I know that works. First go to [TOOL] [NEW 01/02/2011] Flashtool version 0.2.6 and grab the rom you want. I got my AT&T-branded Xperia X10 from Best Buy on Thursday and Sunday I upgraded to the Generic version 2.1update1 build 2.1.A.0.435 found on this page.
Then go to [FLASHTOOL GUIDE] HOW TO for n00bies for a VERY straight-forward how-to on it. For whatever reason the FlashTool would not root my phone after the update, so I used ShortFuse 1.5. I was then able to do the rest of the steps in the FLASHTOOL GUIDE.
I can tell you that my experience has been very positive. The phone is much more responsive and battery life is incredible compared to the couple of days I had 1.6.

OK tried that. The phone goes through the root process and reboots. I go and open up busy box installer. It says your phone is rooted.
So i download titanium backup. When i try to open that i get an error that says can not access root lever. An
Any thoughts.
Thanks for the help so far!

Superuser is on the phone, but when i go to open it, it says the application has stopped unexpectedly. and you have to close the program.

Ok i re-installed superuser from the market. the program opens but i have no idea what to do with it. Any suggestions?

You don't hv to do anything from SU. When an app requires root privilege a popup will appear due to superuser and all you hv to do is tick the "always remember" check box and grant permission.

So I have tried this now on a windows xp machine still with the same results. I can not get step 2 to complete. The comand prompt says the phone has been successfully rooted. But i do not get the option box like it shows in the tutorial. I have installed pc companion twice gone through deleted drivers then re-installed. Someone must of had a problem like this before. Here is a copy of the command window.
THANKS

Try the ShortFuse 1.5 to root. I had the same problem using the FlashTool to root the phone. Tried multiple windows machines with no luck but ShortFuse 1.5 worked perfectly.
Here's link to ShortFuse: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682

Thank you! that worked. Now to finally update this phone to 2.1

You mean I can still overwrite the stock firmware with the pre-rooted firmware?
Will it damage the phone?
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I spent about 4 hours updating to the rooted version of the newest firmware.
The only hurdle I came across was the X10Flash tool, which didn't work on W7 so I had to dust off an old XP laptop.
I done it with an X10i.
1st step.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825675
I had issues with windows 7 but windows XP managed to update the phone painlessly.
2nd Step.
Download Z4Root and root phone.
3rd Step.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571
I had to use the manual version and copy those 3 files mentioned using root explorer.
4th step.
Reboot phone and make sure that the Xrecovery worked. Press the back button a few times as soon as the Sony Ericsson screen appears, hopefully your phone boots into the xrecovery screen. Reboot phone and load phone up normally.
5th step
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8976947&postcount=1
download the first executable file and follow instructions.
Make a new folder called firmware inside the flashtool release folder.
Run the X10flasher.jar file to make sure everything is sweet.
6th step
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885956
First copy all the .sin files into the firmware folder from step 5 above, and dont forget to download the loader.sin and place into the firmware folder.
run X10flasher.jar again and click Flash > firmware > OK
If it says searching for xperia then you are ready to go.
Exit x10flasher.jar
7th step.
Copy the update.zip to the root directory of your sdcard
and reboot phone into xrecovery mode.
install update.zip - you should see a progress bar.
once finished exit by removing battery and leave out for a few seconds.
8
insert the battery into phone and plug the mini usb into the x10 (but don't yet connect the usb to your pc)
9
Run x10flasher.jar and select flash
Should say Serching for Xperia...
10
Press and hold the back button on your x10 and plug the usb into the pc.
The X10flasher should now be updating your phone firmware.
when finished reboot phone normally.
This method will completely wipe all your settings, and in my case my Angrybird saves are also gone.

The instructions are all there in the thread:

Thanks for your reply. I have read the xrecovery and the requirement is the phone need to be rooted first.
But my phone is not rooted and I have installed the new stock firmware so how to go about it?

Then you need to downgrade to the previous 2.1 firmware first. Try the method here:

Unable to Root 2.1-update 1

Do you have USB drivers installed?
First step, instal PC Companion, so that the drivers for your phone is installed (if already installed, skip)
Second, download Bin4ry's X10Flashtool v 0.2.9.1 (search it)
Third, Extract, run x10flashtool.exe
Fourth, enable USB DEBUG on Settings, Application, Development. on your phone
Fifth, Connect your phone via USB, do NOT mount the sdcard, simply press back when asked that 3 options
Sixth, Click root, and wait, done. check if there is superuser app on your phone, if not, try root it again.

I think it way easier to use Super One Click.
Instal PC Companion, and connect it one time before you run SOC... skip if you already have drivers.
Download Super One Click... this one.
Enable USB debugging, connect phone to your PC, open SOC, click ROOT, wait, reboot. DONE!
I've used Super One Click like I've done in the past SU app appears in my app drawer. Root Checker says that I'm not rooted, but SystemApp Remover lets me remove system apps, so I'm rooted but I'm unable to install BusyBox. I've given up on trying to get BusyBox installed for now.

Heyy... I had the same problem with rooting once.... i tried the busybox by stericson i guess, from market. It solved the issue...
I've currently given up on rooting as my X8 got a software update notification when I was connected to my laptop so I'm curious as to what the update is.

Yes it is true. But X10Flashtool gives more than just Rooting your device, its also gives JiT, Xrecovery, and an automated APK Installer, and also it automatically install busybox when rooting, so why use SOC if you want do more than just rooting?
I just give a all-in-one solution, so that he dont download anything else anymore. (for rooting, jit, xrecovery)

I found out that the fake update was because I reverted to the 006 baseband from the 015 and removed some of the system apps that I don't use like wisepilot and Roadsync using System App remover, because it reverted back to baseband 015 and re installed the system apps that I removed.
Strange thing is that System App remover allowed me to remove system apps that needs root to do, while busybox install said that I wasn't rooted.
Will have a go at re rooting again as I quite like the look of ratchs Gingersense ROM.

@dare-devil, well, every other apps have problem so far, but X10flashtool don't, also, custom ROM doesnt have automated apk installer. Titanium backup? you have to install it first right?
Besides it's a VERY handy tool in case you brick your X8, because there will be a scenario where SEUS doenst want to update/reflash your phone, i have encountered that, thats why i use x10flashtool for flashing my phone.
@roland, of course, its created by Bin4ry and Androxyde. 2 great devs

It makes it easier than Super One Click as you don't have to mess around with downloading the Busybox Installer and then Installing Busybox.
I'm sure it'll save me having to put .apk's that I download off the forums onto my sd card and then Install using Root Explorer to install them one by one.

[Q] nandroid backup/recovery tools

Hi xperia masters
I was told a nandroid backup is the best thing to do before attempting any funky stuff with my phone. Ive had to, i think the term is flash, my phone twice alteady cause i made it "unresponsive". My question is: how do i make a nandroid backup? My goal is to change the stock boot animation to a cool custom animation i found here on XDA. Ive also done a bit of reading and saw things like rebooting in recovery mode. Im a total noob.
I have got:
SE XPERIA X10i, 2.1
Rooted with superoneclick, as z4root didnt work on latest SE upgrade
And i asume stock roms, cause i havent changed roms before
I have downloaded Rom Manager (clockworksmod) from the market,
but my phone model is not listed.
Please can anybody advise on my first coarse of action.
Im in xda developers room on palringo aswell, if tht makes comms easier
Thank you in advance
Download flash tool. Use it to install xrecovery. Nandroid is just the backup you make with recovery.

First of all, plug in your phone and enable usb debugging
Then open up the flashtool and make sure you run as administrator.
After the thing launches, press allow root perm, it would send an SU request onto your phone.
Then go onto the advance tab, you would see an option saying 'install xRecovery', press that and the flashtool would start pushing those files onto your phone.
Ok so ive downloaded flashtool_0.2.9.1 , on my pc.
I unpacked the downloaded file, opened the X10FlashTool application.
Only the first tab "flash" is in blue, all other tabs greyed out, cant click it.

In advanced all options are greyed out aswell, no action can be taken there.

[Solved] Rooting Xperia Go st27i? Serious help needed

Hi I am a complete noob, so far I only managed to unlock bootloader and it took me almost WHOLE DAY. I want to root my phone, I have no tiniest clue on how to do it for Xperia Go. There are so many methods for other phones I am getting so confused over this. People don't seem to want to help noobs out too much here I noticed, and often "use search" is being said. Well, I did use search and A LOT, still I can't even find how to get started I don't know which suitable apps I need (there's so many, I have no idea).
Model: Xperia Go st27i
Version: 6.0.B.3.184
I found this thread (Sony Xperia GO property root for 6.0.B.3.184 + CWM recovery v5.5.0.4) is this the thing I should be looking if I want to root my phone? All I see here is that he shows what commands to input, with no tutorial at all. I have no idea where to enter these commands, where to unpack files -_- nothing.
I am really hoping some good person helps me out on this one
I have given up, nobody helps me, no tutorials help and nothing works... I tried SuperOneClick for rooting, it didn't work. I tried the dos app from thread "Root MANY ANDROID!" also did not work. I did not try the link from my OP cause that thread has absolutely 0 tutorials and too much chit chatting in comments.
tl;dr nothing works for rooting my xgo
use flashtool to root if nothing works..
Try to find in sola development section
Thanx me if it helped!

Yes, after installing v14 rom and after installing (later) memory_tweak, your phone will be up to date (mean everything needed) ! Only your last step need to be: install superuser from market (mean superuser, not super su !), and you are done! Going now to my work, will help you later if something missing

[Q] Xperia U rooting procedure didn't work for me, help?

Hello, I have an Xperia U locked to Fido and wanted to root it to delete apps I don't use in hopes of speeding it up.
I found two procedures on 'noob-proof' rooting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933985
http://tutorialfor-android.blogspot.ca/2012/12/easy-tutorial-root-sony-xperia-u-on-ics.html
I followed both of them. With Davis' procedure, the phone did prompt me to Restore the Rootme backup, and I did, but... it said 'could not restore'. His batch file finished by rebooting the phone and trying to copy a couple files which it couldn't.
With the Flashtool method, I installed version 0.9.8.0, even tho' 0.9.10.0 is out, because the latter install package would not run on my Win7 64 bit OS, whereas the former would. I followed the instructions but as you can see from the attachment, root was not achieved, I tried twice.
Any help? At least my phone looks and acts the same with these two attempts failing. I'd be lost if I screwed something up. Thanks.

No, I never got the app showing up, as in both of these trys the batch file encountered errors as I mentioned and I never achieved root as far as I know. The phone looks exactly the same. What is the binary root method? I am not a developer and quite the newbie.

just follow the instruction there......
Thanks Christe00. I tried again with the new RunMe batch from the new location you just posted.
Again, when I go to Restore the file (fa01... whatever it is)... my phone reports "could not restore".
Is there anything I can do to make this restore work? I take it the restore of the backup pushed to the phone is key to achieving root?
P.S. I followed the instructions carefully as detailed in the video. I opened a command window as administrator, I checked that the phone ran properly with USB debugging enabled, I made sure Unknown Sources was connected, I typed adb devices and saw my device... I have tried this several times... my phone always says, "cannot restore.... whatever.... " and doesn't restore the backup, and then the phone reboots, there's no SuperUser icon in my App Drawer and it's over.
Appreciate any more help here.

No I did not. Can I just flash that using the Flashtool with my phone being both Locked and Unrooted?
No I didn't see that there was a requirement for that... guess I didn't look closely. Is there another thread that you recommend I read.
Thanks.
