Do you have USB drivers installed?
First step, instal PC Companion, so that the drivers for your phone is installed (if already installed, skip)
Second, download Bin4ry's X10Flashtool v 0.2.9.1 (search it)
Third, Extract, run x10flashtool.exe
Fourth, enable USB DEBUG on Settings, Application, Development. on your phone
Fifth, Connect your phone via USB, do NOT mount the sdcard, simply press back when asked that 3 options
Sixth, Click root, and wait, done. check if there is superuser app on your phone, if not, try root it again.
Last month a go, my x8 with stock 2.1 just got new update from PC companion,, upgraded and nothing wrong with root proges, u miss someting when doing root I guess,,,,,

I think it way easier to use Super One Click.
Instal PC Companion, and connect it one time before you run SOC... skip if you already have drivers.
Download Super One Click... this one.
Enable USB debugging, connect phone to your PC, open SOC, click ROOT, wait, reboot. DONE!
I've used Super One Click like I've done in the past SU app appears in my app drawer. Root Checker says that I'm not rooted, but SystemApp Remover lets me remove system apps, so I'm rooted but I'm unable to install BusyBox. I've given up on trying to get BusyBox installed for now.

Download this. Extract. Copy that three files in sytem/bin using Root explorer. Reboot when done.
That's xrecovery and busybox. Only that version works
Heyy... I had the same problem with rooting once.... i tried the busybox by stericson i guess, from market. It solved the issue...
I've currently given up on rooting as my X8 got a software update notification when I was connected to my laptop so I'm curious as to what the update is.

Yes it is true. But X10Flashtool gives more than just Rooting your device, its also gives JiT, Xrecovery, and an automated APK Installer, and also it automatically install busybox when rooting, so why use SOC if you want do more than just rooting?
I just give a all-in-one solution, so that he dont download anything else anymore. (for rooting, jit, xrecovery)

I found out that the fake update was because I reverted to the 006 baseband from the 015 and removed some of the system apps that I don't use like wisepilot and Roadsync using System App remover, because it reverted back to baseband 015 and re installed the system apps that I removed.
Strange thing is that System App remover allowed me to remove system apps that needs root to do, while busybox install said that I wasn't rooted.
Will have a go at re rooting again as I quite like the look of ratchs Gingersense ROM.

@dare-devil, well, every other apps have problem so far, but X10flashtool don't, also, custom ROM doesnt have automated apk installer. Titanium backup? you have to install it first right?
Besides it's a VERY handy tool in case you brick your X8, because there will be a scenario where SEUS doenst want to update/reflash your phone, i have encountered that, thats why i use x10flashtool for flashing my phone.
@roland, of course, its created by Bin4ry and Androxyde. 2 great devs

It makes it easier than Super One Click as you don't have to mess around with downloading the Busybox Installer and then Installing Busybox.
I'm sure it'll save me having to put .apk's that I download off the forums onto my sd card and then Install using Root Explorer to install them one by one.

MODS-Please move if i am posting in the wrong section.
I am having a problem rooting my phone using the guide on xda( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711907 ) I can run the first step fine no errors. I run the second step all seems to go well except for the option box that should pop up.
The guide says to re-install PC companion which i have done now three times, with no success. What can I try to do? I am using a X10a, vista 32 bit. I skimmed every page of the 300 page thread, i have tried the first step over again and i still get to the same problem. I have attached a screen shot of the dialog box.
Please help
Thanks

Heres a quicker solution.
Go to the Developers forum in this X10 section and download the flash tool 0.2.6 from there.
Unzip it and go into it's unzip folder run X10FlashTool.exe and with your X10 connected to your PC. Press the "Root" button.
Then download busybox from market and Titanium backup.
Xrecovery is a good thing to install too but I think you have to get the apk file from here if I recall.
It says that program is for 2.1 I am still on 1.6
Would I brick my phone if i tried rooting with a different method?
I used the FlashTool to upgrade to Generic 2.1.A.0.435 a couple days ago, so I know that works. First go to [TOOL] [NEW 01/02/2011] Flashtool version 0.2.6 and grab the rom you want. I got my AT&T-branded Xperia X10 from Best Buy on Thursday and Sunday I upgraded to the Generic version 2.1update1 build 2.1.A.0.435 found on this page.
Then go to [FLASHTOOL GUIDE] HOW TO for n00bies for a VERY straight-forward how-to on it. For whatever reason the FlashTool would not root my phone after the update, so I used ShortFuse 1.5. I was then able to do the rest of the steps in the FLASHTOOL GUIDE.
I can tell you that my experience has been very positive. The phone is much more responsive and battery life is incredible compared to the couple of days I had 1.6.
OK tried that. The phone goes through the root process and reboots. I go and open up busy box installer. It says your phone is rooted.
So i download titanium backup. When i try to open that i get an error that says can not access root lever. An
Any thoughts.
Thanks for the help so far!

You don't hv to do anything from SU. When an app requires root privilege a popup will appear due to superuser and all you hv to do is tick the "always remember" check box and grant permission.

So I have tried this now on a windows xp machine still with the same results. I can not get step 2 to complete. The comand prompt says the phone has been successfully rooted. But i do not get the option box like it shows in the tutorial. I have installed pc companion twice gone through deleted drivers then re-installed. Someone must of had a problem like this before. Here is a copy of the command window.
THANKS

Try the ShortFuse 1.5 to root. I had the same problem using the FlashTool to root the phone. Tried multiple windows machines with no luck but ShortFuse 1.5 worked perfectly.
Here's link to ShortFuse: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Thank you! that worked. Now to finally update this phone to 2.1
Again thanks to xda. Flashed a new 2.3.7 ROM in x10 mini. Here are the steps from scratch.
Check the update, kernel and firmware version before proceeding.
The whole procedure involves
1. Rooting (with Busybox installing)
2. Installing the recovery
3. Unlocking the bootloader (this tutorial is for only unlocked, first hand, SEMC certificate devices)
4. Flashing a new kernel
5. Flashing the ROM and google apps
6.
Before proceeding backup the contacts, messages, notes etc. (Titanium backup can be used after rooting)
I. Rooting
1. Download the Superoneclick from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=485088&d=1294607042 Unzip the contents into required folder.
2. Enable the option to install from unknown sources in phone
3. Enable usb debugging in the phone
1.
di. It is desirable to have sony ericsson update service installed and the phone recognized (with necessary drivers installed)
5 .run the superoneclick.exe
6. insert the cable and select charging in phone
7. select root
yes it is done. Reboot your phone. Go to the apps menu and confirm a app called super user is installed.
Then go to the market and install following 3 apps
1. busybox
2. root explorer (for later use)
3. astro file manager (if needed)
II. Installing the Recovery
1. Download the necessary files from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=616283&stc=1&d=1307259517
2. Unzip the files and copy the bin and xbin folders in system folder to sdcard of phone
3. Open the root explorer and mount as r/w instead of r/o
4. Then move the contents of bin folder to /system/ bin folder in phone and xbin to xbin (only contents, not folder)
5. Change permission of all the files, by ticking all the boxes.
That is it. You have now clock work mod recovery. This can be confirmed by using astrofile manager to see if there is respective files moved. Or power off the phone and switch it on again, when the logo of sony ericsson comes keep pressing and releasing the back switch of phone. If everything have gone correctly till now you will enter the recovery mode.
III. Unlocking the bootloader (for installing a custom kernel)
1. download the flashtool from (0.5.3 -I used) here. http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/
2. before advancing further download the required ROM (for me miniCM7 from http://minicm.googlecode.com/files/MiniCM7-2.1.6.zip )and google apps from http://cmw.22aaf3.com/gapps/gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip and copy both to the root of sdcard
3. open the install location of flashtool and install the ggsetup-2.2.0.11.exe file inside and install Gordon's Gate found in /drivers folder
4. then restart the computer, open the task manager and kill any process named adb.exe
5. donot open flashtool after this till needed.
6. Download the s1tool to confirm the unlock certificate of phone from http://db.tt/OrOQO33 and unlocking tools from here http://db.tt/0zUMR5S4
7. Unzip the s1 tool to the designated folder and run the s1.exe. Switch off the phone. Select the Do Job button and wait.
8. Connect the phone in flash mode (switched off and back button pressed)
9. proceed further only if the screen shows semc simlock certificate
10. unplug the phone, switch it phone, connect to the computer
11. run msm7227_semc.cmd in the directory you unzipped the unlocking files to and press any key to start the unlocking process.
12. If everything goes correctly the log will show press any key at the end.
Now you have unlocked the bootloader we can proceed to kernel flashing
IV. Flashing the kernel and ROM
1. download the require kernel.ftf from auther's site (for me the kernel suiting my ROM was nAa kernal from http://minicm.googlecode.com/files/E10_nAa-08_2.6.29.6-nAa-08.ftf
2. copy this to the /firmware folder in flashtool install folder
3. run the flashtool and select flash, then flashmode
4. select the desired kernel
5. switch off the phone and connect in flash mode when pop up requests
6. disconnect phone when the tool says so
7. switch on the phone and enter the recovery mode when kernel logo comes by repeatedly pressing and releasing the back switch
8. in the recovery mode, do a backup from backup and restore option (up and down by volume keys and select by middle switch)
9. do a factory wipe data
10. then flash the ROM zip by selecting the option install zip from sdcard option followed by gapps zip flashing
11. finish this and take reboot (long)
Enjoy the new experience.

Thank you for this good guide. It's simple but effective specially for non Android pro like me. I remember the first time I rooted my x10mini took me 2 days, the second 2 hours, this time 2 minutes.. no joke.
The strange thing was that a new version of SuperOneClick2.3.3 didn't work. It gave error when starting before I begin to root. The version supplied here worked!
Concerning Recovery/Unlock/FashRom, I'm interested but paranoid plus not very clear about their advantages. Thank you again.

I couldn't install cwm recovery you posted, so instead i used CWMInstaller-Windows-v4-dl.zip, and it worked fine with my rooted u20i mini pro. I have a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and I rooted it correctly. Then I try to update the software via PC Companion. When I am trying to update it says "Not Connect to the internet". But I have already connected to the internet with ADSL modem.
Then I try to manually do that. I downloaded and install the RecoverX ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773227).
Then I run adb with "adb root recovery" command it says "adbd cannot run as root in production builds"
can anybody help me to figure this out. I am a newbie for these things and help me to update the software.
Thanks
I've never used RecoverX, so I don't know what did you do wrong.
search on the forum for 2.3.3 stock ROM, download it and then flash it with flashtool, check your drivers installed and usb debugging checked. Luck,
you have the drivers if you have pccompanion. download flashtool by bin4ry, its easy to use and can do evrything (but ****iing gold^^)
than search for "dixperia 7 avenger" by dikeJ. there you get 2.3.3 stock rom. or an excellent custom rom
in flashtool, if it can detect your root, install xrecovery (theres a panel "custom recovery installer")
and oit of that recovery you flash the zip file. if you dont have 2.3.3 kernel on your phone (if 2.3.3 is not available in your place), you will first have to flash the stock 2.3.3 kernel (i think also givin in dixperia 7 thread) download it and put it into "firmwares" in tje flashtool folder. then open it, wait till it verified your root and click flash, and chose the kernel. if it doesnt work, unlock
bootloader first (after verified root, click plugins and "unlock bootloader") i suggest you to do this in every way because then you wont have trouble

This method allows for ROOT versions 245/254 without having to flash older kernel.
Steps:
1. install the English version of VROOT (see attachment)
2. running VROOT and let you update your latest version (1.7)
3. Once updated, open VROOT and connect the phone with USB DEBUGGING ON mode
4. Press a Button on ROOT and wait for it to finish.
5. Once completed we will say that it is ROOT, but the root that has this in chinesse, to change this file, unzip "Root VROOT.zip" and run the file runme_win.bat (some time need do 2 times for work).
What this does is remove the file ric (random reboots), changes the their to English and installs the SuperSU and busybox (same as V18 does DooMLoRD ROOT).
once completed, the phone will reboot and should be fine.
Enjoy.

for me, yes... no prob. at all
Well, I'll be ... it worked!
At least, that's what Simple Root Checker told me.
I had to directly download the 1.7.0 version of VROOT from Mod edit: links removed , since the provided version in the OP simply won't just update.
Edit: Forgot to say, offline charging works!
At least, when I plugged in the charger after shutting down the phone, it *remains* shutdown. A press on the power button shows battery level indicator, then screen turns off again.

once completed, the phone will reboot and should be fine.
Enjoy.

It's working for me on C5302 firm 2.254
But just follow these steps:
1. install the English version of VROOT (see attachment)
2. running VROOT and let you update your latest version (1.7)
3. Once updated, open VROOT and connect the phone with USB DEBUGGING ON mode
4. Press a Button on ROOT and wait for it to finish.
5. Once completed we will say that it is ROOT, but the root that has this in chinese, to change this file, unzip "Root VROOT.zip" and run the file runme_win.bat.
Don't do the last step "What this does is remove the file ric (random reboots), changes the their to English and installs the SuperSU (same as V18 does DooMLoRD ROOT)."
Coz it will make ur phone always reboot after booting to homescreen.
I just sharing my experience to help everyone

There's only one version that I can see in Mod edit: links removed ...
Or, to be precise, I don't understand Chinese, so I just clicked on the "big button with downward arrow and the label 立即下载 "
(According to Google Translate, "立即下载" means "Download Now")
Then, I followed the instructions of the installed VROOT Windows App. The phone did some quirky things, then rebooted. Everything was on autopilot. When the process completed, the VROOT Windows App automatically tested for Root.
The VROOT Windows App said I'm rooted. Simple Root Checker (which had been recommended via XDA Portal) said I'm rooted. There was a pop-up in Chinese as I ran Simple Root Checker; I guess it's SRC asking for root privileges, I just tapped on "Accept" or "Allow" (luckily, the buttons were in English).
Afterwards, I ran the runme_win.bat provided by OP (after ensuring that I've closed all apps connected to the phone). The SU app in the phone got replaced with SuperSU ...
... and now I'm a happy peach

I've done like those steps, then when I used Folder Mount for my Games Data and reboot, then everything's gonna be error.
So I just flash to stock firmware 2.254 then rooting using DooMLoRD methods, it works now
Maybe it's so complicated using rooting steps from DooMLoRD but I think it gives me a perfect rooting, hehehe

Your reboot problem is caused by some issue with mounting /system r/w, which can happen with any rooting method. it's not the vroot that's causing it.
They broke my signature...

Can you tell me exactly what folder pairs you mount using Folder Mount?
Because, rooting simply means "a way to give you root (UID=0) privileges". You're either rooted, or you're not. There's no such thing as partially rooted or imperfectly rooted.
The possible cause might be a buggy and/or outdated busybox binary.
I myself have installed BusyBox Pro by Stericson. It is one of the most up-to-date and complete busybox implementation for Android.
If you can post exactly what games you experienced problems with, and which folder pairs you mounted, I can test with my phone.
Hi all,
Finally decided to root my z2 since I got it in April. I'm on the above firmware but when I try to root with cubeundcube rootkitXperia tool kit I get error adb is not recorgnised command, program or batch file.
Anyone know how to deal with this. Do I need to download anything else side from the tool kit!
Where do I find adb for z2?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

install flashtool => install drivers => connect z2 in USB debugging on and unknown Application on
Start flashtool, press the root button, select superuser and press OK
check you device now it will promt you to click on root me

Yeah thanks, finally tried it with latest flashtool. I followed the process but it did not reboot my phone, it just said rebooting device but nothing happened. I unplugged and rebooted myself.
I've got super user installed but no root access.
When I ask for root permissions in flashtool, I get root access denied.
I downloaded root checker from play store which said I have root but no apps which require root can get it.
Any ideas, doesn't seem like I can repeat the rooting process without reflashing the stock firmware first.

Yeah super user is installed but doesn't seem to do anything!
Don't think this method works for this firmware. Trouble is, don't think it can be undone without flashing stock firmware again.
I know he was just trying to be helpful but it's really going to be a pain to root now!
