Today, I was caught out for the second time by the unintended SMS recipient bug, where you go to send a text to someone and the phone selects a totally random contact. Normally I'll spot it before I send but it's an accident waiting to happen. This time, I sent a romantic text to my friend instead of the wife, last time I sent a text to the ex instead of my wife! No damage done thankfully but it's totally unacceptable and I've had my phone since Oct 2009. At this rate I'll need a new phone before HTC fix this bloody issue.
When Google finally acknowledged the issue recently I raised (a third) support call with HTC who said they'd fix it when Google issued a fix. Recently Google have started rolling out a fix to 2.3 Nexus S users. Anyone have any intelligence when (if?) this is going to come to 2.1???
never heard of this problem
As above. I havnt heard of this bug effecting 2.1....
Ive heard it effects 2.2+
Hate to break it to you, but the hero is basically dead to HTC now. It has been superseded by so many phones now, HTC are never going to provide any further updates to it. The best you can hope for is a dev will integrate the fix into cyanogenmod 7, if they haven't already.
I can assure you it does affect 2.1 and I've seen various other people say so in other threads. The mate I sent the wrong message to has a Magic and he says it affects him too - not sure what version of Android he's running.
I hadn't seen Google refer to the issue as specific to any particular revision but, if people have been reporting it since June and a fix has been rolled out to 2.3, it would seem to suggest a fairly generic issue.
Like many people I'm pretty disappointed with HTC but I may still stick with them for my next phone as I have an aversion to Samsung and Motorola.
What carrier/country are you in? i also own a magic and still have never had this problem?
I'm on Orange in the UK, dunno what network my mate is on.
To be precise (because there are two bugs really) this is the one where you go to a contact details, select "Send message" and it takes you to the conversation thread for another contact. It would appear to occur randomly however it usually seems to affect texts I send to my wife. This could be because I text her more than anyone else. However once it has done this once it will affect that contact (and not others) until I reboot the phone. I reckon it's some kind of stack issue.
I've had this happen once or twice. Wasn't a huge deal but yeah I've noticed it on 2.1 haven't on 2.2 though

Upgrade!
My hero received an OTA update today taking it to software level 3.36.405.1.
The only posts I've seen relating to this update indicate that it fixes issues to do with the Peep app. MF that, what about basic stuff like making it send messages to the right people?! Anyone know anything more about this upgrade?
Edit:
I noticed that the upgrade added a bunch of bookmarks to my browser, which I was thankfully able to delete. For all of yesterday I even thought that ordering my bookmarks alphabetically would finally persist but no, today they're back in the order added! I mean, if you're going to bother with an OTA update why wouldn't you fix something like this? At over 6MB I'm guessing there have been some other changes with this update, time will tell if the text bug has been addressed but I'm thinking this is just a HTC update rather than anything to do with Android?

Question.....
And yes, I know it's Verizon, but we might as well ask...
When I started working T-Mobile TS it was just after the HP IPAQ mess where the software issues with WM software - it being so new and not really tested that the phone hardware eventually died out based on the number of crashes and restarts required throughout the day.
After about 3 or 4 months T-Mobile started to offer customers who owned the IPAQ and experienced the issues a replacement/upgrade at either a heavy discount or completely free depending on how often the customer account referenced them calling to get help or report an issue. This offer was to (1) get the phone out of people's hands and into the rubbish bin, (2) reduce the number of TS calls daily, (3) end the regular hassle of dealing with MS and HP on patches and fixes, and (4) to improve customer care. Note the customer is last there as the others were costing them more money than the customer's they lost based on the problems probably thanks to their early term fee.
I bought the ERIS basically for 2 reasons - (1) IMHO HTC kicks Moto's and Apple's butts on phones, (2) I want ANDROID. I had a MyTouch with T-Mobile just before coming to Verizon and was looking into upgrading to HTC's new phone over there instead of changing carriers. I checked out the Hero and Samsung's Android phone with Sprint. I was a dedicated and loyal Blackberry user for 5+ years defending and promoting their devices, working on software development within TMO, and went through direct RIM training on BES, BIS, their handheld sw, and thier hw configurations.
SO - does anyone know or has heard anything about Verizon offering us a way to move to the Incredible?
This is probably in the wrong section since it has nothing to do with dev.
What is wrong with the Eris that it requires mass replacement?
I have heard of a few isolated cases where people had been offered an upgrade to the Incredible, but its probably the squeaky wheel getting the grease and someone trying to get the customer out of their face in the Verizon store.
Absolutely!! Wait until the end of your 2 year, or cough up about $500. The Eris really dont seem to have as many of the issues that other phones have had in the past. I havent had any problems with mine on 1.5, root 2.1 or any of the other roms I've tried.
Yep, say what you want about it. But its hands down the BEST phone I've ever owned, and I've had a cell phone plan since 1997.
A little root, a little OC, and a custom ROM. What more could you want?
I see you posted this exact same thing on android forums. Being a tech for VZW, we haven't seen a huge influx of calls or tickets about any particular issue; but i'm also not denying the fact that there are some common bugs that people are seeing but it's not near as many as it appears. Any software problems will most likely be corrected in a MR as is the general practice.
Danimal, can you drop a few more details on the bugs. My wife has an eris and has been pretty frustrated by dropped calls, lockups and blank screens ever since the 2.1 Ota hit her phone (not rooted). She's called support several times, The techs have been pretty decent, but it's still not fixed. The last guy she talked to actually suggested that she try rooting and overclocking.
I haven't had any problems at all on my eris and I'm using leaked v3. My girlfriend has the same phone (ota 2.1) and she complains about the phone randomly calling people but I think she just doesn't put the lock on. Other than that its the best phone I've ever had. Can't wait for my upgrade though and get that moto phone with a 2ghz processor they are coming out with.

I think that's it. Not 100% on the name. Anyways, insanely fast for a phone. Lets see apple compete with that.

Nah, there has been no official announcement of any 2 Ghz phone. The Droid X or Extreme is like a regular Droid minus the keyboard plus some steroids. Moto's CEO or whoever said it, said he would love to ship a 2 Ghz phone by the end of the year. Who knows if it is realistic, I don't think it is. First someone needs to ship a phone with the snapdragon 1.5 Ghz dual-core processor that's already out, then go from there.

There have been MANY complaints about a sound problem with the ERIS and I am one of those poor soles. The sound on my ERIS just stops working at random. Can't hear it ring when someone calls me, when I make a call i can't hear it ringing.. they will answer but I can't hear them speaking, also it has incredibly low media sound volume. If I reboot the phone it will work for a short time then mess up again. This problem is posted all over the Android Forums. Some people have no problems with the sound. It may be a bad batch? I have spoken to Verizon tech support several times and they are letting me get a new phone.. hopfully that will solve the problem??
So if I get this straight...
This post is about exploiting the problems with the eris to get a free upgrade to the Incredible...
Sounds a little wrong to me....
But if you get a free Incredible out of it...
Worth it?
I guess I wouldn't mind.

I would try using a task manager of some kind or another. Advanced Task Killer or Task Panel are good in my book. You can setup certain apps on an auto kill list , and ignore list. That helped mine out, but from my understanding is that There were a fews issues that did come up after the OTA. You can try rooting the phone, but if you don't know what you are doing you can cause more problems than it's worth. I would try using a task manager, and get rid of some apps that have duplicate functions.
My girlfriends blew her speaker on her eris but I think that was just from listening to pandora on full blast constantly.

I would not use any task managers on Android, they adversely effect system performance. See the following link for more detailed information on why: http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/

Hi all. I have the sg2 and I love it. Running Calkunlins E4GT v2.8.1 Rom and it flies. Great battery really nothing to complain about until you have to read an email. I use exchange server for business and rely heavily on my phone for emails. I have called Samsung, chatted with Samsung and emailed with Samsung about this issue and none seams to know what I am talking about or how to resolve the issue. I came from the HTC Evo and this was not an issue. I have tried several different ROMS and I have checked with other people who have the same phone and we all have the same problem. Frankly I am surprised there isn't a fix or more people complaining about this. The issue is the text does not wrap in emails and a word will be broken and split between 2 lines. This makes it very annoying to read emails on my phone and I read a lot of emails. I have attached a screenshot of an example. If anyone know how to resolve this issue I would love to know. I have tried looking in all the settings for a way to format it but I cannot seem to find anything. When I called Samsung they basically told me they didn't have a solution and they were sorry. When I chatted with them they told me to call, and when I repeatedly emailed them about the issue even after I told them in an email that when I called they had no answer they continuously told me to call. They had no interest in attempting to figure out why this is happening. thanks for your time.
Am I the only person that's noticed the cover up (or at best complete overlooking) of the 920 MANY issues?
Let me say, I own(d) a 920 and I loved it so much I looked past all its flaws, and I dealt with a lot. Previous owner factory reset it right in front of me and we know what that means. I spent the next 12 ****ing hours unbricking the thing just so I could use it! Now, after owning the 920 a freakin week, it stops reading my SIM card suddenly so now I'm back with android.
I just notice that no tech site has EVER run any articles about the litany of major issues with this phone. Hell even in the forums nobody seems to have put it together! Am I the only one who sees it??
Bricking on factory reset
Battery life issues
Black screen on calls
Hardware buttons randomly not working, requires soft reset
Phone suddenly stops reading SIM cards
I'm sure I'm missing some but those are the one I dealt with. Am I alone?

I've been using the 920 for 2.5 months now and I have none of your issues. I had the restart bug but it got fixed with portico update. also there is some dust under the FFC but i don't care because it is not on the lense and it don't use it anyway.
i know about black screen and factory reset bug but i read for the 1st time that there should be major problems with the SIM card or the hardware buttons.

My son has had the 920 since it came out...Other than *****ing about the lack of the most popular apps (instagram, temple run, Jetpack Joyride...etc) the phone has been nothing but flawless. He will never give it up because he is an xbox junkie lol
i've had it for almost 2 months now..
only issue i've had is the crashing (normally every couple of days), since updating seems ok so far...I've flashed a few 'roms' to it, EE branded and normal
I thought the screen going blank in calls was supposed to happen? Like to save power? last couple of phones i've had turn the screen off when you put it to your head?
I'll be honest, i'm a little disapointed in windows phone 8, after coming from 7 with no crashes for a year (apart from once when i started messing with the registry) I found windows phone 8 quite shocking, coming from android/windows mobile i'd say its not to bad, but in someways it seems a downgrade. But so far no crashes with the latest update, and i'm hoping it stays that way, but honestly, I have a feeling your issues are isolated.
Also had the chance to use the new nexus 4 the other day, if theres a cover up going on, i'd say its those who say android is smooth and responsive....
I've been using my 920 for a month and haven't encountered any of your problems. The only thing I don't like about my 920 is that there is no app so far to automatically switch phone profile according to time and location.
I'm shocked 2 of you have had no problems. Search Google for any of the problems I listed and you'll find loads of people with the same issues.
Id get another one but I can't afford to keep buying phones when one ****s up. And yea the screens supposed to go black when you put it to your head but it was going black and staying like that so I could end calls, use the num pad, use speaker phone, or any of that. I found a work around but the proximity sensor is supposed to work

Search google for ANY electronic device followed by the keyword 'issue / problem' and you are sure to get pages of results. People that don't have problems (most people) typically don't post about it while people with issues regularly post because they want the issue resolved. This gives an artificial bias to the negative and only reinforces the already tainted view of people in a mindset that something is rubbish.

I agree, since the last update I haven't had very many problems at all. And since I haven't been having issues I haven't been coming to the forums as much. I just come in every once in a while now to see if there's anything new. I'm not constantly hounding for an answer to my problems on a daily basis since I don't have problems. It's my guess that other people who have perfectly working phones would have like minds as me... or just not visit the forums at all.
No bricking during factory reset (had to do it once and I'm not going to do it again just to prove a point).
Battery life is awesome.
Hardware buttons are working fine.
Blank screen during calls isn't an issue for me since the proximity sensor works almost all the time, I think.... at least, it hasn't been a big enough concern for me that I actually notice it.... guess I should keep track of it.

unstable and functional or stable and unfunctional.

This is also the main thing I'm missing, coming from Nokia N8 the situations was really a great app...
I think Nokia lumia phones in general have a lot of issues, as does Windows Phone. It's just there are so few users even if there was a problem, it would seem isolated. Microsoft's share in the smartphone market didn't even budge at all in 2012. WP users are not power users so they just run back to the store to get an exchange. Even the lumia 920 forum at wpcentral.com is slow as molasses. 90% of the posts are very shallow anyway. Most don't even know what screen size their phone is or what processor its running. the camera is just AMAZING and the phone is PERFECT, over and over again. Of course, this forum isn't any better. The only difference being the plethora of unlock threads, because xda is international.
Your description of WP users is fairly accurate & the market segment MS is going after. The enthusiast market is small & even on Android accounts for a very small % of sales. The easiest way to solve an issue is by exchanging the phone, if you have that option available to you. A lot of issues people are having are either caused by defective hardware or a bad flash IMO, which is an issue on any of the platforms.
Do people not expect bugs and hiccups at launch for these kinds of devices?
It happens. And it's not as bad as you perceive; it's not a conspiracy.
AW: The great Lumia 920 conspiracy.......
If ms allows developers create store accounts for free I bet there would be more apps on store.,.
I get what you guys are saying, but phone busting issues like that black screen on calls and bricking on hard resets shouldn't be common enough to have a thread full of people experiencing them.
If anyone knows of any way to get the phone to read SIM cards again, I'd like your help. I still miss using my lumia 920 :'(

I have experianced just about every issue in this thread. I have users of the 920 I support for other stuff and I see how they basically ignore them as they did on their Blackberry or iPhone. I had the brick issue... news flash as I posted in another thread, it is not bricked!!! use the Nokia Care Suite, gets you going no problem. During my day I may deal with just about every phone they see at an AT&T store (Tmobile, Sprint,or Verizon for that matter)... they all have issues. Have you ever seen an iPhone user change their password on their laptop and not update the iPhone? Lets say you need to get to something before updating that password, like they changed the server setting trying to update it... go ahead try it. Drop calls, Steve Jobs had to properly instruct dumb iPhone users how to hold an iPhone. Andriod, perfect????? WTF are serious?? And becuase of that piece of software, it does not matter what hardware you are talking about.
My phone is limited compared to Andriod, I can agree with that.... but I can do more with fewer Apps and I like that. The 920 has had some hiccups along the way, but the hardware I have right now is as solid as any other phone out there, actually physically a tougher phone then any other top tier phone.

This is exactly what I was trying to get at. These sorts of issues and threads are everywhere for many high profile smartphone launches, especially lately with this insane obsession with HW spec wars.
I've seen much worse, many times, you will not buy a high end smartphone at launch these days without having some sort of worry that there will be a game-breaking bug or defect.
WP 8 for 3 months:
NO ISSUES
POWER USER (i had portico when the first roms were available on navi)
my question is, are all these faulty devices on ATT or another crap american service , cause i think this may be your problem, ive had to work on vodaphone orange tmobile and ee 920's and 820's and i can say with pride that the only issue people have is the lack of popular apps., there is no conspiracy. why the eff are you people needing to hard reset anyway wtf are you doing to your phones?
I have to admit I've been having freezing issues regularly, often when it's just sat on my desk or in my pocket, and almost every night while on USB charge. I've also noticed on the odd occasion a reboot, but only because of my SIM being PIN locked.
Mine was a German Vodafone one, which I flashed on day 1 to the CV_GB ROM, then again to CV_GB Portico ROM. Maybe I'll try a different one, as I've heard the EE one has fewer issues.
Hey guys, did anyone notice a positive change or fix on the AT&T HTC One's camera with today's update OTA 4.3??
I wanted to know so I won't go back to stock ROM for nothing,
I'm running CleanROM 6.0 with android 4.3 and Sense 5.
At least in this ROM there is no change in the camera,
but I still have hope that in today's update there is a change/fix.
There was no improvement for me at all.
My wife's phone did not have the issue, and I have even heard that some people who didnt have the issue before, now do.
I am curious as to what the actual remedy is. Some say hardware, others say firmware.
Id be more irritated about it if it affected anything other than low-light photos for me. But I am still quite pissed as my only option is to send it in to HTC and wait without a phone for a couple weeks. I should be able to walk into any AT&T store and swap it with a new device. A hardware defect is a hardware defect. AT&T should fix the issue in the store. The only people I know who dont have the issue, have a launch device.

Yeap, been looking for some opinions and there is no fix.
Well... better luck for next update on 4.4,
wich is going to be in 4-6 months I think haha!
Both myself and a colleague ordered the GPE version and they arrived today. Both of our devices, completely stock are unable to get into the Settings>Security menu's. When we launch it, it simply crashes and says "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." Every other settings menu works fine. A quick google search turned up this article from earlier today.
http://blogs.computerworld.com/android/23270/sony-z-ultra-google-play-edition
I am sure this will be fixed soon, but I figured I would post here in case someone else came looking for answers (this is always my first stop).
Troubleshooting steps tried : Factory Resetting, Also tried launching the security settings before running all of the updates from Google Play store, still didnt work. We tried resetting a device and not signing into anything during the initial setup, no go.
This prevents us from being able to install exchange accounts, enroll in MDM, or even simply set a pin lock. Major, major issue, fingers crossed it's gets exposure asap.
We tried calling Google several times but "their system is down, try our call later" is the recording we got. Update - Finally got through to them. Opened a case and they escalated.
Also trying to uninstall any applications cause the device to reboot.
Yeah, looks like everyone with a Ultra GPE is affected by this. Not much to do with it until Google releases a fix though. You would've thought that Sony would notice a huge bug like this, but lets hope they are aware of it - which i guess they are since i assume a lot of their employees are using this model.
Try contacting Sony through their Chat Support and explain the bug to them, and give the person you're talking to the link you've posted.

when I attempted to contact Sony this morning for the very same bug with my unit they transferred me to Google. The rep I spoke with said he was unaware of the issue. Wants me to RMA the device to send me a "refurbished" one. I'm gonna wait out a fix I guess... Didn't pay full retail for a refurbished model.
