The first day I got my Atrix, I put it on WiFi after going home and syncing GMail, etc. I then checked my data. To my surprise...I had downloaded 60 MB! Coming from my iPhone 3G, where I used about 50 MB/MONTH, one day of 60 MB was quite...interesting, to say the least. I am on WiFi at school, at home. I browse FB and Engadget for 1 hr on and off on the trains (where I also get WiFi at stations). I tested my data usage last month because I was hesitant about paying 70$ a month and was considering paying for the 200 MB plan, but I kept the unlimited.
So I set up another control. Yesterday, I kept my internet on--BACKGROUND OFF--and did not access any internet apps, gmail, email, what have you until I was back home and on WiFi. WiFi was kept off during the time before home. Here is the proof (friend's 3GS, my 3G is the last picture you'll see).

Yet....I still used 6MB of data (I cannot take picture of screen at time but I will update in a few hours when I can). This is not a lot, I realize. But if you consider that literally I was not using any data at all, this is quite a lot, especially multiplied by 30 days. 200 - 180 = 20 MB of data useable in the month!
Anyone getting these kind of results?
And as a bonus picture, taken the night I got my Atrix:
4G, **** YEA! (Long Island, NY. 2 Bars, connected to NY server. WiFi settings: 14/5)
QUICK EDIT: I turned off push for every email and yet...I sent an email to myself, a minute later my phone vibrated with new email? Can this be affecting my data usage?
What apps have you installed? Those use data also. Also, did you check sync settings outside of e-mail? There are a LOT of things that use data that are not e-mail. My phone's due to be delivered tonight so I don't have any Blur experience yet but my EVO has a section in settings called "Accounts & Sync" where you can see things that are set to sync at the system level. Individual apps can have their own settings as well - Facebook, Twitter, Photobucket, News and Weather, EBay, Fox News, App Brain, Chrome to Phone, Amazon, Amazon MP3, InstaFetch, MySpace, Google Rader, Skype, Google Talk, all can use data (just going through my EVO's app menu).
I got mine two days ago and have only installed a few apps. Email and Gmail are the only ones that would use data...and on Email I made it NEVER update unless manual. I think this is why Android users use more data than iPhone users.

That's not true at all. Since you had to sign up for a motoblur account when you first set the phone up, that phones home, and there is a setting for synchronizing your data and settings with motoblur. Ensure that's off too.
Running a weather widget? News widget? Using the Forest live wallpaper? That monitors weather over the internet too. How about latitude? Picasa? Have your account setup through motoblur on Facebook? That will pull down statuses when the app isn't open, and show them in your contacts.
Point is, there are a ton of apps from the factory that utilize data, and some of the widgets run in the background even if they're not setup on your phone.
Android users use more data than iPhone users because we can do significantly more with our phones without opening applications. A 200MB plan isn't viable for an Android poweruser. The 2GB limit is just fine, though - The most data I've used was around 900MB, and that included pulling down ROMs over the air on my Captivate, etc.
I've pulled 900MB over wifi, but only 1.35MB over network. I only let facebook sync over wifi. GMail syncs when it can (my workplace is like a bomb shelter). And today, I missed the exit on the highway and turned on GPS and maps after getting off the next ramp. I would have thought I sucked up more data by now, but apparently I haven't.
Okay, but I'm on WiFi and this should NOT be happening.
I just checked again today. I went from 62.3 at 6 AM to 107.8 as of right now!! WHAT THE **** IS GOING ON? I have been on WiFi almost the entire time! Why the **** is this happening? 2 days and 100 MB used? That's unsustainable!

Can you please tell me how to check and disable the Motoblur updating? I have no facebook apps or any of that other stuff. no weather, whatever.
I really shouldn't be flipping out but this is ridiculous, I'm paranoid about downgrading and getting hit.
Android tends to use a lot more data with background data from apps and especially widgets. When your screen is off it usually defaults to your data connection. You can change it to leave Wi-fi on all the time by going to Settings>Wireless & Network Settings>Wi-fi Settings>Click Menu Advance> and change Wi-fi sleep policy to never. This may affect your battery life but you will probably use less data by doing this.
^ I dont think I wouldve ever found that menu .
Can someone post how to limit or disable MotoBLUR syncing?
Which ones out of these would use it though?
Applanet
Barcode scanner
Bettercut
Browser
Digital Clock Widget
Enhanced Email
Gmail
Widget Locker
Not sure which other programs could even use it. I am pretty sure I have GMail locked down.
I called AT&T about my voicemail they fixed that, I have'em on the data and the lowest 4G speeds.

I did this. Tomorrow at work I'm downloading a huge application (basement, so there will be no WiFi) but Sunday I will do a benchtest on this. I will be at home the ENTIRE time so theoretically all data should be sent through WiFi.
I thought we'd find this humorous.
What about

I'll try that Saturday night, thanks. So I'm expecting a <5MB across the entire day if even anything.
I'm seeing similar behavior where there is some sort of non-trivial amount of data being transfered. I'm using TrafficStats which if can be believed I'm seeing about 3 to 4MB of data every other hour associated with "Mobile Desktop" (which lists a bunch of sub items.).
The other very strange thing is that the majority of the data is UP (not down).
I've got similar apps installed on an Archos 70 tablet (gmail + touchdown for corporate email) and I have never seen this kind of background taffic.
In some good news the phone went from 107.5 to 108.4 across the night. Not that much, 1 MB.
Check the AT&T site for data usage, since that will be the official amount for the bill.
I hope your apps don't combine network data and wifi data to give you your data usage.
If you're really in a bind, try seeing what turning off ALL data does. That's Settings>Data Manager>Data Delivery>Background Data & Data Roaming & Data Enabled
I'd also suggest installing an app like Net Counter, which will monitor the types of data used and update a desktop icon as that changes. It won't tell you exactly what ran, but it will show you WHEN something has just run, and that might give you some hints.

Hi
If anybody is interested in having RIM Blackberry + loads more functionality on an XDA, please take a look at - [http://www.a2000d.com/Duality_Always-On_Mail.htm] This is a server based product & suitable for 10 or more users.
Cheers
John
Wow, that's a lot of complexity to do something that's essentially already built into the device.
Hi, I think you may have missed the point somewhere along the line, sorry if I didn't make things clearer. This is full GPRS PUSH email which the XDA, in it's native form, isn't capable of.
Hope this helps.
No real difference. It keeps the GPRS connection open, just like keeping it open and having your mail software check for mail every five minutes. No effective difference, unless your e-mail is so important that you can't wait five minutes. But then you could set it to check once a minute.
It's not a true push in the sense that the server can't initiate the inbound connection.
Something pretty similar and cheap could be set up quite easily. The basic problem is that the XDA can't hold a GPRS connection permanently. You don't see the advertising bunf about 'always on connections' any more.
You could get blackberry-like functionality with two simple apps: one that runs on your exchange server that gets an SMS gateway to send you an SMS in a particular format when you have mail that hasn't been retrieved for a few minutes. And one that sits on the XDA checking incoming SMSs and when the 'check your mail' message comes in, starts attempting to start a GPRS connection and poll your server.
I agree with Andy. In fact I just noticed that T-Mobile are offering this very capability to all e-mail subscribers right now. The PPC client has to have an additional option ('my alerts') that has the specific functionality aka: read the 'hidden' SMS message and go and retrieve the mail.
Only problem seems to be that this additional option in the WM2003 e-mail client is not available as a separate download, but built into the ROM image. Seems that the only device that has it built in right now is the new HP PPC phone. I enabled this service on my t-mobile account and I receive the special SMS message fine, but my XDA e-mail client is not smart enough to recognize the special SMS message and then go an pull the mail down. I still have to do it manually. Still we are getting close to 'psydo push' e-mail I guess!! Does anyone know of an e-mail client for the PPC that has this functionality built in to it???
Look ay iAnywhere's Pylon Anywhere solution, it is better.
Only US $634 for five users (includes server back-end and client software), runs of Exchange or Notes. As for clients, it provides support for a broad range of handheld devices, including Palm OS, Microsoft Pocket PC and Smartphone, Symbian OS, SyncML, and WAP-based devices. Even supports RIM devices.
Communication is fully encrypted!

It provides three connection types; ReadySync, network push and SMS push - of course you can manually sync as well.
Most of the providers (mobile) use some sort of SMS push to triggger your device to sync to get new mail. This solution supports that, if you want it. The network push is real-time, if something triggers the monitoring server it immediately has your device sync that information type. Pylon Anywhere can monitor and sync Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items, Calendar, Contacts, Notes. From both the client and server sides.
There are a ton more features that are incredible, like killing (hard reset) a device remotely if stolen/lost. I will have a review up by the end of the week, will post here (if I can).
Thanks Nighthawk. Looks pretty interesting and quite a bit cheaper than the Intellisync product I have been looking at.
I have downloaded the documentation and am thinking about doing the 30 day trial, but I am a bit confused about the various hardware requirements. All I use right now is a WIN XP laptop with MS Outlook for mail. My mail is POP 3 from BellSouth and I have a DSL connection to the Bellsouth account via a dynamic IP address.
It looks like that to install the PylonAnywhere server, I am going to need MS Exchange, a static IP address and my own domain..... Am I reading that right, or can I simpy install the PylonAnywhere server software on my laptop and point it to the BellSouth POP 3 account for my mail? Any idea?
Many Thanks!
CB
Yep, this is a server based system. Connects to your exisiting Exchange or Notes mail server(s).
You sound like your just connecting to your own desktop, hmmm.
You might want to look at Smartner's Duality Professional edition or Internet Edition.
Go here: http://www.smartner.com/products/professional.html
These two are based on a single user concept vs. enterprise.
Hope that helps, let me know how things go.
Yes, I came across the Smartner product in my sesrches too. Does not appear to be available in the USA form some reason... In fact the licencing agreement actually precludes you from installing it if you live in the USA. Must have some kind of licencing problems I guess.
...?
I saw that while looking at their web site, kinda concerned me :?:
One could only speculate as to why, since not listed anywhere.
I think you can still DL the trial vesion off their site thoguh. If not, check out Handango, they have two versions listed (one a monthly contract).
Hi Nighthawk.
Yes, I did manage to download the trial, but it seems to be the 'enterprise' version, with functionality and architecture very similar to Intellisync and Pylon. I did not see a trial for any of the basic connectivity versions... I think I will call Smartner on Monday and see what the deal is with the licensing. I suspect it may be some kind of patent issue with one of the other providers... I'll let you know what I find out.
To download the Enterprise trial I had to request it via an e-mail, awaiting responce.
The Handango version is the Professional version, you can DL a trial version (doing it now).
Definately let me know what you find out from them, thanks.
Hey..
Smartner Duality is quite a good package for RIM like functionality. I bought the professional version a couple of months ago. It was easy to install etc. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it only does e-mail. It doesn't sync your calendar/todo. Their Enterprise edition is the only one that will do calendar/todo. Other than that it works great.
I'm definately thinking about trying Pylon Anywhere after reading this thread 'cause I want calendar/todo syncing... And quite cheaper that Duality Enterprise's smallest license.
Thanks Nighthawk. I think the professional was the version I downloaded from Handango. It looked like it still required an exchange server, but I stopped when the licence agreement said 'NO' to installing in USA... I'll let you know what they say... In the mean time, do you know of any 3rd party e-mail apps for PPC that are more reliable for checking the POP 3 server? The Pocket Outlook app time interval ba ed checking seems very intermittant and unreliable.
am-imate,
If you have any questions about Pylon Anywhere just let me know, more than happy to help. The server install is pretty easy, you will need Outlook 2000 w/SP2 (only) and java installed for the machines (server) browser.

Well Nighthawk, I have a question on all this, a kind of « question asked by a dummy » for I know little but not enough to make my way through all the material posted here.
I would like to create a Blackberry like function on my XDA. I’ve looked at this post and got some part of it very clear. The rest remain quite unclear.
My company uses MS exchange server in the office and I have a PC with Outlook on XP on my PC. My company already uses blackberry solution which I do not have but would like to uses my XDA instead to avoid duplication of hardware.
If my understanding is correct,
1. I need to install Pylon Anywhere (or some other application) on my XDA to collect my new mail.
2. I need to liaise with my Mail server administrator to have the server send my XDA a special SMS to silently trigger the synchronization process.
3. I will use on my XDA ActiveSync Inbox to read my mail on my XDA.
Now, this seems to be too simple. Did I put all the pieces in the right place?
Email Push
I'm using the Mnotes program on my i-mate for Lotus Notes wireless push. It works well, the push works flawlessly and doesn't require installation on the server-just my desktop which acts like a server for my handheld. I also have it working through our firewall using a Movian VPN(v4.0). All of this works through my gprs connect.
The only downside is that an incoming or outgoing call interrupts the gprs and the VPN disconnects and must be manually re-connected. on i-Mate

Pylon Anywhere requires a server back-end, meaning you must install a Pylon Anywhere server into your network. This server connects to your companies Exchange/Notes server. It then communicates with the Pylon Anywhere client software on your device, after you have it installed by the server.

Website for BookSync
The apps currently on its 5th version 0F and is now stable (had a few issues in the early versions but they have been worked out now).
Hopefully people will find it useful, please leave feedback to help improve.
To help spread booksync please become a fan.
I you are feeling really generous please consider donating by clicking here
Thanks
Mike.
Thanks for making such a great app.
So far, I haven't been able to get the Birthday Sync to work. Would it matter if my friends have their birthdays hidden?
Hi, thanks for your support.
Facebook just return the birthday as a string made up of all the parts the friend has allowed access to. I attempt to parse that and only update if a full date can be found.
So sorry if people are hiding their year of birth they wont update.
Mike
Does what it says on the tin.
Very nice, and very useful. Thank you for making this available.
This looks very very good -- and I've tried every "Facebook to Outlook or Windows Mobile" app out there.
Really looking forward to:
* Higher resolution contact photo's
* Ability to select which of the matched contacts get sync'ed (so "matched" doesn't equal "sync'ed")
* Option to not sync pictures (if you just want to sync birthdays, for instance): I have a number of friends whose Facebook profile pictures aren't as nice as the contact pictures I've given them...
If you find the time:
* More things to sync, like home address, work, Facebook groups to Outlook categories... (if possible)
* Individual sync settings for each contact that are stored for future sync'ing so it can really be used as an automated process.
These are just to inspire you, it's not a list of demands!

The pictures being sync'd are the highest quality pics that can be sync'd. Facebook gives you a few options to select from (square, small, big, normal), from feed back from mainly htc users I select the biggest picture possible to sync with. This is dependent on the image that the friend uploads of course.
Your other point about selecting which contacts to sync has been mentioned before. I plan to redesign the UI to include this. I'm an asp.net/win forms developer who originally wrote booksync for myself and decided to release it then it took on a mind of its own from feedback etc.
The redesign of the UI may take a bit of time as I learn so will be included in future release.
I will investigate how much can be sync'd.
Would really love for phone number and email address but these are not available.
Thanks for your feedback its just what I was after
Nice work. Thanks!
Wow. Ill give it a roll. Looking forward to the update you mention with choosing which pictures
Outlook Birthdays (if not given the year can be done by adding the "current year" but that should also be optional.
I have tried it and loving it.
I only have to fix the file as after I am done syncing.
It would also be nice to import facebook contacts as well even if it is just a link to their web adress such as www.facebook.com/friend that way the contacts can be integrated into PIE as well.
any chance you also use myspace?
I have been switching over, but some of my friends have not. In fact, I have a lot more friends on myspace than on FaceBook.
thanks for sharing this great app.
Thanks.
Will look at working create contacts into a future release.
As for myspace I will have to do some investigating around their api (if they have one) I dont use myspace so not played around with it.
i installed it but uninstalled it on my htc touch pro...it worked once for me then it kept on crashing. i never got it to work since the first sync..not sure why...

I got a minor problem of the login page not really fitting on my QVGA screen and no scroll bars to adjust. the size of the fonts are good, but I have to use the tab key to select the password and logn button. also have to fix file as in my contacts.
Login page needs the most work.

yea it says some type of program error and crashes...other then that it worked nicely on the first try....but until this is fixed i will wait again...great work on it tho..i just wished that it synced everything that the fonebook app does which works similar
Having some issues as it looks like everything is fine but it just sits with the "Syncing..." message on screen but does nothing, even after half an hour.
I was hoping to remove the link to the first contact in case it's just his contact causing the issue but I can't see a way. I ven uninstalled but it's retained the link. Where are the settings stored so I can start from fresh?
Hi,
The picture quality is actually pretty ok. Much better than what you get when adding pictures in (desktop) Outlook.
Thanks for considering my suggestions. The option to select which of the matched contacts are sync'ed will be a great enhancement, I hope you get it done.
What would also make me happy is the option not to sync pictures, and being able to choose this for each contact individually... some of my friends have really ugly profile pics.
Creating new contacts from unmatched Facebook friends, as someone suggested, is a really good idea as well. Somehow your program feels really promising. I think that's why a lot of people are rooting for you to make it into a full-fledged Facebook-to-Contacts sync solution (not just pictures). Too bad Facebook doesn't make phone numbers and e-mail adresses available, but well, that's how it is.

One more thing... From time to time, Booksync stops working: it starts up, tries to log in, then throws an error each time.
I noticed that by removing the <SessionKey> line from the settings file, I could get the program working again.

Where is the BookSync Settings file
It's under 'Program Files/BookSync' and is called 'settings.bss'. Removing the entire settings file would work too, but then you'd have to re-match all you contacts. If you only delete that single line in a simple text editor, you can keep the rest of your settings.
Hope it works for you too.

From my research and browsing, there has been a consensus that Cerberus is the best app for lost phone, coming with a slew of useful features.
I am just wondering if there are any apps that I may have overlooked that may be as good/better? I've considered Prey, Lookout, McAfee, Where's My Droid, TheftWare, SeekDroid, AntiDroidTheft.
The only app that looks as good or better than Cerberus is AndroidLost, but I haven't found any reviews or much about it around the web.
Thoughts? Is Cerberus the best? Is AndroidLost comparable?
Here you go: AndroidLost review.
And to my mind, two most major cons about AndroidLost are: ability to easily uninstall app and app's unresistance to the wipe. If I'd choose, I'd pick up Cerberus.
I use Prey
I released an app called PhoneLeash earlier this month (also see announcement).
I call it an app for the "misplaced" phone. It has your GPS locating and remote ringing, but not the bulletproof "stop thief" features of the apps mentioned here. Instead it has a decent set of features to help make use of the phone even when its out of hand: missed call notifications, SMS forwarding (with reply), voicemail status, battery low notification etc.
Its has just one screen, maybe 3 fields worth of setup. So far this is one big differentiator from many of the other apps in this category.
In the version expected to release tomorrow, there is a new feature I am very excited about. As the phone battery is dying and the phone is shutting down, it'll send out its GPS coordinates--all in a fraction of a second. I am calling it "GASP" for "GPS At Shutdown Point" until enough people have told me it sounds ridiculous!
I welcome feedback - positive or not (see here) and would appreciate any from this group.

- Notification on phone bootup and shutdown
- GASP ("GPS At Shutdown Point") sends out your phone's GPS location just as the phone begins to shutdown! Perfect for lost phones about to lose battery charge completely.

Can this app send gps location in sms?
Consider I lost my phone in the woods. There is no wifi and I have no other data plan :-o
But if I could get the coordinates by sms... :-o
Yes, PhoneLeash can send location to either an email (using WiFi or cellular data) OR if the destination is a phonenumber, it will use SMS instead. Commands to the phone are only through SMS at the moment (or email-to-SMS which is the same thing on the phone side).
You can also change the destination remotely from email to phone/SMS or vice versa. Like after you've lost your phone in the woods ...
Happy New Year!
That's a good news Thx.
If it could wipe everything in phone I would switch to it immediately. Now I test Androidlost but I'm a bit concerned about there is a db with info about my phone and a control to wipe everything on it... There would a little loss it would just annoying.
Happy New Year!
I am curious to know more about the desire to wipe everything on the phone, if it gets lost. Its a nuclear option I have been hesitating to implement; I am worried it will get used merely for a misplaced phone, with regrets when the phone is found later.
Email accounts are (I feel) the safest to delete. The contents are usually replicated on GMail, or Exchange etc. Pictures are the most risky - they may not be backed up, and cannot be replicated.
I've been thinking it may be better/safer to do a quick and light encryption on pics, and SMS store. Unless you are a celebrity this should reassure you, and if you find the phone after all, you can get your data back.
I'd like all your thoughts on this subject, if possible. Thanks!

The encryption thing is a good point But I think it should be a platform feature... anyway as I see it:
* personally I sync all contacts / calendar to my horde webmail edition with funambol client (SyncML)
* and all data on phone that has some value are backed up in other place
So lost all data on phone is a little loss... if the phone is found. Just one thought. If there is wiped all data function that deletes all data than your program can't deliver info about the current position of the phone.
So in my opinion the program should delete all programs cache and data but the data of the PhoneLeash's. Del contacts and accounts, sms mms etc...
So if phone is found it is like a factory reset with PhoneLeash
But if phone found by other with data on it is not acceptable.
And if you could make the program hard to remove. Only with password... :-D
And a Happy New Year to All!
I have put androidlost in my rom and it works like a charm.
It's very stable and has great features. I don't know what else I could say. xD

AndroidLost has a very rich feature set, but all setup and most control of your phone is through their website. Even the basic SMS pincode to allow SMS commands must be set there. If you haven't been thorough about it, and just installed the app, better not lose the phone where there is no data connection!
Most "find my phone" apps require the use of their website, and giving all that control and info to a 3rd party website ... I don't know! AndroidLost - for example - will send a copy of the GPS location to their website even if the request has been sent to the phone from another phone (via SMS) - why?! Another example - on startup, it'll grab all your emails and "register" them without so much as an "If I may ...".
PhoneLeash is a puny upstart in this business, with a hundredth of the feature set, but one thing I'll always be careful about is to not _require_ the user to send any data or command through my website. Its not my phone, not my data, not my business.

You can lose it because the sms commands are working with gsm only. But the point is yours with information sent to 3rd party.
That is because I consider to uninstall androidlost and install PhoneLeash if there were a wipe function and it is made hard to remove it (I don't know about android but if there could be a password before remove...), disable from viewing in launcher. I'll follow the development of PhoneLeash I don't want to follow my phone over the net. I only like to have a __little__ controll if it get lost.

AndroidLost requires you to setup a password for SMS commands but you can only set this up through their website, not the app on the phone. If you forget (and I suspect many do), you are out of luck without a data connection!

This is not hard if the app gets administrator rights. My philosophy is to not take on so much power (no requirement to root either), but in this case an exception may have to be made!
Thanks for the engaging discussion. I'll keep this thread updated as new features come out.

Since we're on the topic to "hide the personal data", why not have a remote password lock (such as Pattern, PIN or Password) feature? If I lose my phone, I go to PhoneLeash's web interface or whatever, and press "Activate Phone Lock" (for example).
It will do the same - disallow access to the phone's private data - just without wiping it.
But then also have a nuclear option. Or backup all data (contacts, pictures, text, etc) to PhoneLeash's servers, then wipe.

In my opinion:
- data on phone are sensitive (it's a paradigm sensitive data shouldn't be in phone)
* should not transferred to 3rd party you not trust/control
- PhoneLeash and other active security apps are guard data if the system is running
- If you have physical access to phone you can disable the system and got hold of the data in it
* one option can be to encrypt all data with a trusted algorithm but it could be time consuming
* wipe all data
About root permissions:
androidlost makes it optional. If you want to hide app you could add root permissions but not a must.
avast! mobile security for Andoid
avast! best of all its free and does the job.

avast! is an excellent choice, especially for rooted users. You can install it and its settings to /system/app so it survives factory resets, and it can force your phone's data and WiFi connections to remain on.

Would it be possible to add an option to "lock phone and password protect sdcard" and it would just lock the phone until the process was complete and then put all of the contents of the sdcard into a password protected .zip file and the password could be chosen by the user from the website before sending the command?

Does anyone here know how data-hungry Touchdown Exchange is? I just installed it, and recently got a warning about data usage from my network provider for the first time. It could be a coincidence, but it made me curious about whether TOuchdown regularly pulls down large volumes of data (e.g. auto-downloading email attachments).
Does anyone have any knowledge of how Touchdown manages data usage?
We don't automatically download attachments, you have to implicitly choose to download them by default.
There's nothing in TD that would drastically increase your data usage unless you chose to download your entire inbox or something like that. By default, TD only downloads 3 days worth of mail.
I'd watch it for a day or use one of the many bandwidth tools to watch the data usage.
We can check the size of the DB and see if it's really TD causing it. Our support team can walk you though this. You can reach them at

Yesterday my brother bought a Consumer Cellular MOTO E LTE (2nd Generation) 2015 device. It is a XT1527 with Android 5.1. He only got a 1500 text and 150mb data plan. This is his first smartphone ever and his last phone was a 2005 flip phone.
This is how he plans on using it. He wants it for checking Gmail, making a few hundred text messages every month, and for BT Headset phone calls. He is a truck driver and that is all it will be used for. He does not need Hangouts, Chrome or anything else on the device for that matter, not yet anyway. How can I setup his MOTO E like that? I already set a data limit to 150MB, but he wants 100% of all of that 150MB data for checking gmail only. Not sure if he plans on replying to gmail messages, but unless its important I doubt it.
Is this phone possible to setup like that and can I uninstall most of his unused apps? OH, and I already tried to remove apps such as Chrome and Hangouts and only updates get removed, not the entire app. So I will need root, but not sure I should try that on the XT1527. Maybe its possible to install and run a already rooted ROM without unlocking the bootloader? Any ideas on how to accomplish the above tasks?
Try disabling unwanted internet using apps from settings, disable sync for everything except contacts and gmail and also switch on "Background data restrictions" to avoid any apps running in the background to use up data. If you're using only mobile data, even turning on battery saver mode at all times will indirectly help you save some data
