Can I install a Captivate ROM on a Vibrant and get AT&T's 850MHz 3G? Or is it more hardware related?
I just like the look of the vibrant over the captivate...
High there. I have both the Captivate and a unlocked Vibrant on AT&T...I hate to say it but I believe the problem is hardware related.

First off sorry if this has been both asked and answered already, but has anyone noticed that the Epic 4g software (2.1 firmware) seems to be lag free and runs a million times smoother than the Vibrant software out of the box? I'm even on stock 2.2 jk6 and still the Epic runs smoother on the stock 2.1 rom. Isn't the Epic 4g a Galaxy S phone? If so, why would the Epic 4g run smoother if the software and hardware (minus vga front camera, keyboard and led flash) are the same? Once again thanks and sorry if this has been answered in the past.

I hope no one is offended, upset, etc. hopefully someone has an answer/theory as to why the Epic's rom is faster than the Vibrant's.

Nope.

Yea, go to any area with "4g". I get upwards over 5 mbps down where I live.

Depending on what you consider 4G....
http://www.thetelecomblog.com/2010/06/05/t-mobile’s-3g-network-faster-than-sprint’s-4g-network/
4g is a hardware difference, not software. The regular vibrant does not support 4g, but it does benefit from it since T-mo's towers are updated, therefore putting out more data, resulting in you being able to reach max DL speeds - hopefully 6 to 7 megs, which in my opinion is plenty.

this thread is getting interesting. if its really true that the vibrants chip really does support 14.4mbps but is soft capped, then this could be a break through in development.

The vibrant 4g will give us all kinds of goodies. We'll see.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I was thinking that the ONLY thing we need to do to get 4G from our 3g+ vibrant is to flash the 4G vibrant modem , when we have one.
The phone itself is locked to what frequencies it can use as well as what technology by the antenna, AND the modem. T-Mo is NOT going to spend millions on new technology that half of its phones cannot utilize, hence why our 3G vibrants have access to "3.5G", which is technically "HDPA", and not "HSDPA", right? The new 4G tech is all ip based, so all the phone would need is a properly encoded modem file to get it to work.
I mean think about it guys, does anyone own an analog race scanner? If yes, have you ever tried to tune into the digital frequencies? You get a modem-like digital noise out of it, because your radio lacks the software to decode the signal properly.
It sounds plausible in theory I suppose, but I can guarantee you this, IF it's possible xda-dev WILL be the first to know, I know I'll be trying it as soon as I see a modem upload!
Master tweeted that there were several 4G icons in the KA6 leak... Curious if it's the Vibrant + leak?
Where can I get the ka6 leak? Does ne1 no if it has the 4g

Flashable via ODIN or CWM.
As far as the 4G, I hope someone else who has played with the KA6 can opine. I literally just flashed the new modem like 2 hours ago. I do not notice an increase at my desk here at work, but I have not gotten to play with it outside where the signal is stronger. Fastest I've seen on my phone is with JL1, and that was just under 6mbps down practically standing underneath a tower.

as far as 4g goes, theres been a rumor that the chip in the vibrant is capable of handling 14.4mbps but is soft capped. theres a whole thread abt this rumor. mainly someone did a complete tear down of the i9000 and looked up the chips part # and specs. since the i9000 and vibrant is almost identical, its believed that the vibrant may also contain the same chip. whether this is true or not,no one will know until someone does a complete tear down of a vibrant. as of now,the vibrant can only go up to 7.2mbps .
I want to flash but I think I am gonna wait til some1 can verify thats its faster and everything.

I loss all hope on 4G is not because of having it or not,i was happy with the 4MB mine was getting, but 4G on my Vibrant mean that i will get even faster to the capping line of Thief-Mobile.

Thank you for your concern eltormo. I'm sorry that you are upset about T-Mobile's ability to throttle your services at their whim. Your contract Terms & Conditions are open-ended, leaving tmo the ability to provide you as little data as they want. You technically are not being capped. It's frustrating to all of us, but as it stands, it is still the best offering out there.
All that being said, your post is irrelevant to this thread topic, so please take it back to the [THINK TANK] thread you were on earlier if you would like to complain about throttling.
In case you lost your way: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872570
^^ that's funny!
I dont see how the speed of what you download effects, how much you download? Cap or throttle... Blah blah, more speed is a good thing. I for one hope that the vibrant does have the 4g chip, not just for obvious reasons, but it would be awesome to see what would happen in the general section. :gets popcorn ready: Then again I'm not holding my breathe.
Would it ne possible to swap the radio from the vibrant 4g into the vibrant?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
i dont know anything about iy and i might be lway off but i like to comment i think it wont work because its different modem so different drivers apply as cor 3g moded from 4g phone is the same so there is nothing new to port to this phone

No it will not work. We will never have true 4g on the vibrant. We are hardware limited and not software limited for 4g.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
No, 4G radio does not work on the Vibrant. And as of now the 4G kernel will not allow data to work.
I think the OP is asking if the hardware could be swapped.
The answer is the same, though - not bloody likely.

Yep, but I hope someone eventually tries, if its even possible.
Now, could I flash a Vibrant 4G modem and get the 3G bands it supports? I am desperate trying to find a way to make the Vibrant work on 900Mhz or should there be no way, on 850Mhz(and switch carriers). I know the 4G supports 3G at 900Mhz... Is there any way to have either frequency running on this phone? What modem would I need?
Thanks!
Hey guys once the AT&T GSII is released will we be able to use that modem for our international GSIIs? And do you guys think it will result in better signal/better speeds? Thanks - currently on KG6 modem which seems to be the best for AT&T (KH3 sucks!)

Hey what's your HSUPA speeds comparing the KG6 vs KH3 modem?
Depends on area mostly, but I get like 4mbs on KG6 (which sucks) and like 1mbs or less on KH3

I wanted to bring this thread to attention again. Anyone have this available?
It will be hard to say until you have a modem from the AT&T version and test it. It can't hurt to test, but the Captivate's modem wasn't interchangable with the I9000, so it's hard to say.
