I have these double circular arrows up top next to the H+. They are not spinning, just setting there. They don't seem to ever go away. Is this using data or what. Not sure what is causing. My phone is rooted with a few things frozen but nothing that has anything to do with syncing.
thanks for any help
It sure seems something is still syncing... You can test what it is by going into Settings » Accounts and disabling individual sync services for any accounts that have them.

No, I only have the Moto Blur default account and there are no setting for that. It has a little lock by it. I don't use it, I use K9 mail program for all my email including google but in my System account there is my Yahoo account that is the default, locked account and a google account, neither of which have any setting at all.

Nope, I tried that and the arrows remain. Also, something strange I think. The arrows stay there even if I turn Airplane Mode on!
Sounds like a silly question, did you reboot?
I rebooted many times. I started removing apps so hopefully I could find it but each time I restarted those sync arrows came back. I also tried freezing every thing I could but no luck so today I unfroze everything and still couldn't get rid of them. Something was always trying to sync. I noticed that my battery life was shorter today so I did a factory data reset and now I am in the process of rooting it again and installing my apps again.
Thanks for all your help and I will be more careful and systematic this time but what I learned is that one needs to be careful about installing apps. Read the reviews first because some programs are memory hogs, some take over your system, etc.
I've only seen that when I started up this new phone.
I shall look for it. I really like my phone. Look at it often.
(Wow, that was nerdy.)

Yeah, the Atrix is still relatively new to the dev scene so most mods are going to have side effects. Basically, just be prepared to do some resets and such until something has been labeled "stable". I'm already on my second Atrix because I messed up the lights for the capacitive buttons and something went wrong with charging, it would always say it was charging even when unplugged. The problems even persisted after a factory restore. Luckily I was able to unroot it and bring it in for a new one before my 30 days was up.
When you see the "sync" icon there, you can go to:
Settings > Accounts > tap on an account, say Gmail.
If something is sync-ing, you'll see the sync-ing icon beside the checkbox for contacts/emails/calendar.
I know on mine, when it syncs with my google calendar, it takes a good 2 mins...odd considering i have less than 10 entries. lol.
I got curious why the sync icon was there for a while, so this was where I looked to figure out what was sync-ing.
Download os monitor and look sort by load. See what is taking up the load and that is your rogue syncing app. Likely it is stuck on a google contact that is corrupted (if acore is your issue in os monitor)
i had the same icon on my notification and i froze account sync and calendar sync, it was killing my battery around 10% per hour. the icon went away after a reset and i have no idea what caused it. looking in titanium i saw an app called SyncML 2.2.1 that has a similar icon but i have no idea if its the app thats responsible, still froze it.

Have a rooted Atrix on .83, and I don't want the phone to sync with my contacts on facebook and all.
I tried to set social applications to sync over wifi only, doesn't help.
I want to completely remove the accounts.
When I go to remove them, I get either an "account canot be removed" error, or when on wifi, the "removing account" loading bar freezes up forever. I tried leaving it there for 30 minutes, didn't get anywhere either.
I'm only rooted with sideloading enabled, no other mods.
Anyone know how to delete these accounts WITHOUT factory reset?
I'm not in a position to reset anything right now at the moment.
Thanks
Not sure if this is entirely what you want, but revoke access to the application (I think it's MotoBlur) on Facebook. It's in the privacy settings page, at the bottom, where you control the apps.
That is, if facebook didn't move them. Again. For the 87th time.
Edit: Look through twitter's settings pages, it's in there too. I don't visit it too often so I don't remember it.

Lol at the shameless self promotion
I don't want my phone to sync any contacts or contact photos at all with twitter or Facebook, too much to sync that my com.motorola.providers.contacts is using up way too much battery (about 20+ minutes of CPU time)

The accounts app is where the errors occur.
Might try using a privacy guard program to deny accounts data access unless you allow it. That is a lot of manual work though. Doesn't the settings menu have sync over Wifi only? Or does it not work?
Edit: read your post. Will update reply shortly
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4G on the network with the most backhaul, whatever that is. This post might have errors as I hate touchscreen keyboards.
Another freaking edit: I juts removed my FB account from the accounts app. It froze while at the 100% mark, but finished a few seconds later. If you don't want it to be able to sync, and you don't want to reflash, and can't get it to work, revoke motoblur's access to facebook and twitter from facebook and twitter side.
I can see where Motorola would want to make it a pain in the ass to remove them though.
I currently have it set to sync only over wifi, but the phone seems to be syncing over cellular data anyway (or attempting to, no contact info ever changes)
As for denying service, that may work, but I need to find a way to disable these accounts all together. I'm guessing that it won't attempt to sync if it has nothing to sync with.
Read above edited post
You were able to remove it? Are you rooted or anything?
Mine just freezes at 100% forever :/
Rooted 1.8.3 stock. Only have the webtop hack. Did you try revoking access? That might make motoblur make you reenter your password. Then it might allow you to remove it.

I spoke to them earlier today, the reps said "the only way to remove those accounts is by doing a factory reset"
bullsh!t
To my immense surprise, I managed to get rid of Facebook from Motoblur without a factory reset. I was lead to this thread by searching and I had the exact same problem as you. I don't know which step was responsible for my success so I'll describe all of them:
- go to Facebook and revoke permissions for Motoblur. I also changed my FB password for good measure. Wait a few hours.
- Settings - Applications - Manage Applications. Choose the "all" tab then scroll until you find the Motoblur Accounts and Accounts Storage.
- Clear data for both
- turn off your phone, unplug and remove battery. Wait for 30 mins. Replace battery and reboot.
- go to Motoblur accounts and try to delete your FB account again. It should work.
I seem to have deleted my Google calender (or some part of it) from my android (specs below). I can’t seem to be able to restore it.
I had problems syncing a new calender and was trying to clear all cache etc in order to get it to sync. I went into Settings --> applications --> All --> ‘Calendar’ (I’ve always had two of those, so I took the one with data in it, the other always stands on 0.0B).
I cleared the data, force stopped it and then I pushed Disable. The button went from disable to enable and I restarted my phone thinking I could enable it after restart. After reboot the calendar had disappeared. Meaning: no icon in the ‘applications’ screen, when I go into the settings menu I only have one post named ‘calendar’ (the empty one). Calendar Storage still has content though and when I use widgets they seem to be able to access and sync to my main Google calender. When I use ‘month’ view I can see the different events I have in my calendar but I can’t edit anything from my phone. As soon as I try to actually access it I get the message ‘Unfortunately, TwLauncher has stopped’.
How do I restore, or enable the Calender again? I find it really disturbing that I don’t have a calender icon in ‘application’ anymore and that it seems to have completely disappeared.
I’ve tried clearing data, experimenting with the sync option and rebooting several times. I just can’t seem to get any results though. And I can't find it on play so I can't re-install it. Any insight on this?

Might have worked had it been a sync problem only (my calendar is intact on the web). This however is a problem of the built-in calendar app disappearing. I removed the account and installed it again but the calendar did not appear.
I'm starting to think that factory reset is the only viable option.

Hmm but that's a bit much for just probs like this...
Hmm u checked the options in application > all > calendar and delete data again?
Then also checked if calendar sync is active (I think so but just an idea)
So last option before factory reset would be wiping the dalvik cache
If at all now luck... U can do it.
But would be really strange.
Much success ;-)

Lost Calendar Events
Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I have a similar issue/problem
I was syncing and unsyncing with my samsung to google calendars, then the next day I checked, I realized all my events disappeared.
I did not erase anything yet all my events were gone.
I did notice that something was occurring during the period that I lost my data.
I saw that my default Samsung browser on my smart phone went on a refresh loop on google home page. This was an issue on googles end and was resolved eventually.
This was one of google's problems. There would be an issue with google recognizing me logging on the google home page and gmail. This lasted for a week. I wonder if that caused my data to disappear?
There are a few links below describing what happened. I'm wondering if this is an issue with Google, samsung+google, or syncing in general.
if I can recover my lost events that would be great!
It seems like a lot of them has to do with smartphones syncing, which is what I did. Even if there isn’t a solution or a recovery for this, it would be great to at least get an understanding as to why this happened (so i can avoid it in the future). I am currently storing everything local to my phone and havne’t experienced any loss of information. It’s quite disconcerting that if I did use google calendars, at any moment, all my events can go missing.

Restore a recent backup, that way the period of events lost will be minimal; only events entered/altered after the time of the backup, obviously (and you can then sync to Google if you like to bring that back up to date).
So far as recovering your lost events goes, I doubt Google will restore an individuals calendar events. Tho you might as well ask them, they might surprise you. That way you then simply restore them to your phone.
Failing that, unless you've got a copy of the db file containing the calendar events still on the phone, can't see how you'd get them back unfortunately.
As to why, I'd be asking Google. I've been keeping my phone/Google calendar synced a couple of times a day over the year and a bit I've had my SGS2 & never had a problem from their end (a couple very early doors caused by me when I had to reset my phone & I hadn't synced to Google before doing the reset).
Thanks Mistah. Unfortunately I didnt make any backups with TiBu or a nandroid at that time.
I've asked google and you are correct, they dont do event restores.
Yes definitely my main concern is why it happened at all? So it never happened to you?....hmmm..
im wondering if it was something on Google's part or something I did.
Before I realized my calendar disappeared, I unsynched and erased the profile on my device so it only had the local calendar, then i synced again.
I wonder if my erasing that profile on my samsung caused the calendar to delete. Or maybe it didn't register or save?
I can't 100% recall if I saved the events on google's calendar or my local. but if I stored on my local, shouldnt the data still be there even after my sync and unsync or google calendar?

Yep. If you remove the Google a/c from your phone completely, it deletes the events attached to that Google a/c in the calendar app. When you add it back, you'll have an empty calendar until you sync it from Google.
So essentially, what's seemed to have happened is you've done that with the a/c on your phone, for whatever reason your events @ Google's end have been nuked, so when you've re-added the a/c back on your phone & gone to sync it, there's been nothing there to sync back to the phone.
If you untick 'show [email protected]' in the calendar app settings (as opposed to removing the a/c outright), exit the app & restart the app you end up with an empty calendar, because it must have a Google a/c linked. If you retick 'show [email protected]' your events show again because simply unticking it doesn't delete anything.
Removing the a/c outright from the phone must purge the DB file(s) (?? I presume) on the phone.
That's the most logical explanation I can come up with given what happened/the order it happened in with your phone.

I just tried it again. I removed the account from my phone. then resynced it. All the info from the calendar is still there.
Currently i store everything locally and only view local calendar (as you've said, untick google calendar).
Also not sure if this matters, I'm not using google calendars, I'm using samsung's stock calendar planner.
I cant see how removing the account from ur handheld would erase all events from your calendar. Isn't removing the account just deciding not to sync with it?

Background: I noticed that Motorola Services was eating a bunch of my battery, so I froze it with TiBu. Blur account disappeared, taking with it my phone contacts (not Gmail or Corporate Sync).
- Thawed the program, still gone.
- Wiped cache, still gone.
- Used Mybackup Root to restore all of my contacts (Gmail, Corporate, Moto services), which involves overwriting the old ones: nope. The contact app doesn't see the phone contacts thru Moto Services because it doesn't see my blur account.
Funny story: Airdroid still sees the phone contacts. They're hiding somewhere. Just not showing up in the contacts app, and I can't seem to download the contact list to my computer.
Does anyone have any ideas before I do a factory reset? I don't flash new roms often for a reason: setting everything back up is a PAIN, dammit.
Contacts > menu > display options
Make sure groups are selected to be displayed by selecting accounts, e.g. Google to expand it and ensure there are checks in groups you want to show up.

Yeah, the problem is I've been storing phone contacts under my Blur account which is what went missing thanks to me screwing around. The only groups available to check are my Gmail and work email, both of which were added by me after the initial setup procedure (and don't have phone numbers associated).
I did some more searching and it looks like others ran into the same problem, which isn't fixed by "thawing" the app. And, it looks like the only solution involves a factory reset. Maybe I'll upgrade my rom version while I'm at it... ah well.
Hey everyone, new to the DNA (bought last Friday) and I'm totally a fan. The phone is awesome. However I'm having an issue where I'm having to manually go in and sync my Gmail to the phone. It doesn't automatically pull the Gmail down. I've made sure that sync is set to auto and that all the correct boxes are checked.
Currently stock running 4.1.1 (Software Number: 2.04.605.2 71ORD)
Gmail App Version: 4.2.1
Any help would be greatly apprciated.
Thanks,

That's pretty weird I don't have any problems with gmail sync. Do you maybe have an app installed that is controlling sync times ?
Edit: I'm also on stock btw.

I thought maybe it was the sync notification app you install for Nova, so I un-installed it and rebooted. Still not working. I'd hate to have re-install everything.
I think you covered this in your first post but have you actually gone into accounts under the normal android settings and made sure that your Gmail is supposed to sync?
It sounds stupid but it's somehow happened to me a few times where the Gmail sync box was unchecked.

Nope, it is definitely checked. I'm wondering if it is something with my account. My nexus 7 isn't syncing either.
Try going into settings and apps then clear the data for gmail and then open the app back up to let it log you back in.

If you suspect it your account (which is unlikely), check on your computer to see if it syncs.
I'm getting emails on my computer just fine. It is just my two devices that I'm not getting mail on. Factory resetting my phone this morning, will see if does anything.
I've also added my secondary gmail account to the device and that one syncs, if I send an email to both accounts, i get a notification for my secondary account but I don't get one for my primary account. Any thoughts? Would this be something to hit google up on? Is there a number I could call?
Did you try clearing the app data like I suggested? This has happened to me before on different devices and clearing the data always fixed it for me.
Sent from my HTC Droid DNA
Most definitely tried that, also factory reset the phone. Trying turning the auto sync on and off a few times and that didn't help either. It is the craziest thing. Which I could figure it out.
Obvious things to try that I'm sure you kick yourself if you forgot any one of them:
- Under the specific account settings:
- Notifications are indeed checked?
- Gmail sync is on
- Manage labels, Inbox and any other important labels are set correctly?
- Days of mail to sync are set to ~30 days?
I think those are probably an exhaustive list of on-phone options that would preclude syncing.
Yup, went through all those settings. Multiple times.
Did you hit the setting within the GMail app specifically?
I recently went through this because of the Snapdragon Battery Guru app. It shut off my GMail sync and I had a hell of a time finding out how to put it back on.
I had to open the Gmail app itself and go to:
Settings > [your email account] > Notifications (check box)
Settings > [your email account] > Gmail sync is ON
If that's not it, then I don't know what else could be the issue.
I am thinking that during initial setup you said NO to background syncing so just check this ..
Settings -> Accounts .. -> Auto Sync (SHould be ON)

definitely check that! i went a day without emails, and any notification. i thought it was weird, but didn't really pay much mind to it. then i noticed that i'd only get my whatsapp messages when i actually opened the app, i checked for autosync. somehow, it was off. it was working fine all along, and i have no idea how it got turned off. everything has been fine since, though, so definitely double check that
Does anyone else have an issue with Gmail notifications? Most of the time I receive no notifications about new email until I unlock the phone. Even then they do not always come in quickly. When I open the Gmail app they do come in.
Yes, they will "eventually" come in on their own but way later than they should. I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find. This should NOT be happening in 2021! This is not a OnePlus phone and even then my 8T is not this bad. Also, the notification LED does not activate for Gmail while it does for Messages and WhatsApp. I have gone through every possible notification setting on the phone as well as for the Gmail app itself and made sure that using the LED was selected on them all. I hate that Gmail is installed as a system app! WHY???
Another interesting things is that Gmail is NOT listed as the default app. It is not even there as a selection. Messages is installed as a system app and it is listed as the default. WHY?
I am liking the phone, but not receiving notifications for such an essential feature as email is NOT GOOD!
The phone is causing Gmail to go into deep sleep when the screen is locked unnecessarily.
I may have found the solution. To start I went into Settings > accounts just to double check that the toggle for "Automatically sync app data" was turned on and it was. While in the same screen I tapped on my email account and then tapped on "Account sync", Here you can do a manual sync of all the various apps associated with your Google account. SO I tapped on the 3 dots in the top right and tapped on "Sync now" and the only thing that synced immediately was Contacts and maybe one other (can't remember which one. No matter how many times I would retry to do a manual sync the same thing would happen.
So I closed all of this out and went directly into the Gmail app > settings and chose my email account and scrolled down to "Sync Gmail" under the "Data usage" section and unchecked this setting. I rebooted the phone, went back into Gmail > settings my email and re-checked the "Sync Gmail" selection, rebooted again and went back into Settings > accounts > my email account > account sync and all the various apps listed in this section had now synced properly. I could tell by the time stamp for each one. I also did a manual sync again and everything in the list synced up within about 10 seconds! I was happy. I locked my phone, set it down, and within a minute or two I received several emails and the notification chime went off. I'm still not sure if the notification LED lit up or not but I think it did. Hopefully this fixes the issue.
Sometimes it isn't what is selected but the order in which you select things so as not to cause a conflict.
This is one area of Android that I think needs improvement (Samsung is the worst for this) that there are too many settings that seem redundant, counter intuitive, and conflict with one another.
Well, after writing all the previous entries I am still having the same issues with Gmail. On my OnePlus 8T every morning shortly after logging in my emails would come in without any prompting on my part. With my Xperia 1 iii I received NOTHING until I actually opened the Gmail app itself and sure enough there were about 5 emails that popped up! Something is very wrong here. I am not looking forward to a factory reset but I may have no choice. I will say this: If after a factory reset Gmail is still unresponsive I will definitely be sending this thing back!
Can confirm that there is something wrong with gmail. Just gmail. Ive tried 3rd party email apps and they work.
Totally understandable that you would prefer gmail over others. I too would actually prefer my gmail to work. I hope this is fixed in a firmware update.

Exactly! I decided to NOT do a factory reset because I feel that it would not help. Instead I just disabled Gmail and installed Bluemail. It has more settings than I care to mess with but at least all my email notifications arrive properly! I am glad that I am not the only one this is happening to. Is there some way to inform Sony directly that they have a problem? I liked it better when Gmail was a Play Store install! I DO NOT like it when ANY apps are installed as a service!
I chatted with Sony Tech support. They went through all the usual settings that I already tried several times. They escalated it so we will see what happens. One thing I have noticed, which may be relevant or not, is that with Blue Mail installed when I do get an email both Gmail and Blue Mail give a notification????
To me it sounds like you just need to whitelist the app in your battery saving settings.

Please, while I can appreciate the suggestion, do you think I did not already go through every possible setting and permutation in an attempt to resolve this issue? I am a retired IT Systems Engineer and I have used cell phones for so long it's not even funny. Not to mention there are others experiencing the exact same thing! However, I was forced to do a factory reset this morning so "maybe" things will start to work properly.
I have exact Gmail notification issue when I got my X1iii but the issue resolved after I upgraded to 61.0.A.11.92 this morning. After switched off Gmail sync off and on and turn on the notification on individual labels, the notification was back.
It might be the previous firmware used a bad GMSCore. My device is a XQ-BC62. BTW the install step 3 did take some time but my phone didn't stuck at that step and it went through.
I have different problem with gmail notifications. For some reason notifications are always coming when in the evening I plug in my phone for charging. After a moment gmail notifications are coming. And this happens all the time.
??? Sony?
Guys please treat everyone with respect.
We are here to help each other and exchange our experience. Not to offend each other.
Thank you.
I have had a few days now with the last update = .92 and so far it appears as if my Gmail notifications are coming in exactly as they should when the phone is locked. For sure much better than before the update. So whatever Sony did in this update (besides the security update) is working for me. The LED is also lighting up properly for Gmail! Good job Sony!
Gmail still does not sync automatically for me on the .92 update. Factory reset and it works for a bit but once after a while it stops. No amount of uninstalling GMS updates or clearing its data will get it working again, so I have no idea what happened.

Have to ask...you did give Gmail unlimited data? Also, you did set Gmail to "excepted" in battery settings?
Even the most experienced sometimes miss things.

Just to be sure, I went through and double checked that Gmail, Google Play Services, and Google Services Framework all had:
* Battery/Power-saving Feature: Excepted
* Unrestricted data: Enabled
Still didn't resolve my sync issues
Did you try this: settings > accounts > tap your email google account > account sync > has everything synced fairly recently? Any of them appear to be stuck, not spinning? Top right 3 dots sync now, does everything finish syncing?
Just adding that I noticed this problem after the .92 update. I'm not sure if its there before. So the .92 didn't solve the issue on my end, glad it solved yours.

I haven't had issues with gmail but I have had the kind of issues described in OP with other phone models and similar apps and the cause was a bit too eager battery optimization settings so I honestly thought it was the cause here too.
If it was not, then it is a shame I couldn't help.
But as a response to your comment: No. I don't think people here are idiots. I just think you are one.

You make it sound like you think people are idiots because as already mentioned in the FIRST POST, he already excepted his apps from battery optimization. If you still ask people if they have done so, you obviously think we are idiots, since you ask a question that has already been answered. Grow up please.
Edit: Here let me quote it for you:
I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find.

Testing out a potential fix which seems to be working for now.
I found out that my phone backup isn't working either. Manually pressing the button, the backup keeps telling it failed and asks me to try again later. Searching online, there are some that suggest to remove the screen lock to see if backup starts working again.
After I removed my screen lock, I cleared cache/storage of Google Play Services, Google Services Framework and Gmail. Then I rebooted my phone and left it a while to let it fully boot. I can now backup my phone, and I am getting my Gmail notifications. Now I am observing to see if this is permanent..
If the fix is permanent, at least on my end, it seems that Sony's build of android has buggy encryption. This was an issue with other brands too.
Update on my problem. Firstly, after trying the above, I noticed a few days later that in general I wasn't getting notifications from anything. I concluded that I messed up Google Services too much and therefore factory reset my phone.
After that and readding my google account, My notifications was fixed, except Gmail still wasn't getting notifications, but phone backup started working. I was about to give up and use another email app, when today the September security update arrived in 61.0.A.14.3 update. Being desperate to try anything I updated without hesitation.
This seems to fix the problem and I am getting my gmail notifications.
Not getting my hopes up too much and just continue monitoring but I hope this the end of my google problems.
