greetings, nookies
i just threw together this app for the NookColor. it gives you access to hidden system settings, and allows you to select soft keyboards that are installed.
it's super basic and ugly right now, but i hope it will come in handy. i plan to expand and refine it as time goes on.
when you click the All Settings button, you'll see a list of all the available preference panels. note that some of them don't work. not sure why.
some highlights:
- Development > Auto Mount - turn off usb auto mount
- Development > Manage Applications - uninstall apps, clear defaults
- Battery Use
- SD Card and Phone Storage - shows available space in internal storage
- Testing > Battery Info - status, voltage, temp, etc
- Testing > Battery History
- Testing > Usage statistics
if you find yourself on a screen without a back button, remember that you can swipe left over the notification bar at the bottom, if it's showing.
for info on installing other keyboards, see this thread. basically, you need to copy your keyboard's apk to /system/app and reboot. if you haven't done this before, here's a howto.
new! to enable the non-market apps checkbox, you need to copy this apk to /system/app. if you have 0.1 installed, uninstall it first, then copy 0.2 to /system/app and reboot. this is necessary for the app to have the right permissions to modify secure system settings. the app will still work if you install it the normal way, but you won't be able to use the non-market apps checkbox.
as usual, i accept no responsibility if this messes up your device. use at your own risk.
changelog:
0.2 - added install non-market apps option. apk must be in /system/app to enable this feature. filtered some unusable settings screens out. added some descriptions for the buttons.

Nice, I'll give'r a try..

EDIT: OOh nice, development settings access, usb debug mode, usb auto mounting galore..
Thanks!
Hey, thanks a bunch
keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! Unfortunately it didn't help my keyboard problem because the only keyboard that showed up was "To enable it (the Scandinavian keyboard) go to Settings - Language & keyboard. There you need to check Scandinavian keyboard if it's not checked". So I'm guessin that it's not checked and that the specific settings file (I guess it's like a control panel app in Windows) isn't even there on a Nook. Or is it just not activated that easily?
If I try to launch the keyboard i get "Activity not found". Any idea if there is another setting to activate the keyboard for use?
Very nice work.

see this thread. you have to copy your keyboard apk to /system/app and reboot for it to show up as an option.
Thanks! I actually tried something like that, but couldn't get it copied because of the settings. Gonna try again tomorrow (getting late her in Norway).
new version. read the OP for important instructions.
Very nice... is it possible to release the source for this?
This looks great! Thanks for sharing!

hold off on installing this app by copying it to /system/app. it seems this might cause your NC to do a factory reset when using any of the bn apps like the library. more info to come when i get a chance to investigate. until then, you can install 0.2 as a normal app.
Ben74, this app is excellent!
Also, I noticed that when NC freaks out and wipes to factory settings, it does not wipe /system. Does this mean that, in principle, your app will allow to keep root (with the Development menu settings)?
Thanks again!

are you saying that you also got a factory reset after installing NookColor Tools to /system/app? after the reset, did you still have root? i did a full reflash of /system and /data after that happened to me, so i don't know.

No, I am not saying that at all.
I am saying that in my unrelated tinkering, I have had wipes that always end up keeping the /system intact. (I suppose they were not of the full-reset-"factory.zip" variety.)
I was simply guessing that if that were the case and your apk survived the "soft" wipe (as I have seen with other apks), then following the ordeal, the NC would still be rooted ... Maybe ...
That would be a cool possibility, no? Not having to go through the initial rooting procedure.

Aha, after reading this post, I understand the context of your question better.
Here is my case: I had done a bunch of work and had NookColor Tools installed as a regular app. After performing some action that involved invoking the NC Home app, I got a message that the Nook encountered some error and will now undergo a factory reset. After the reset, I had to reroot, of course.
The bottomline, in my case, with respect to this discussion, is that the wipe-causing problem occurred while NookColor Tools was not in /system/app folder.
At the moment, I reinstalled everything and this time I put NookColor Tools in /system/app.
Will keep an eye out for interesting developments ...
I see. The factory reset that happened on my NC was the type that only wipes /data. I'm not sure if root would be retained or not. I'm also not certain that the reset I got was related to my app. Has anyone else who installed it to /system/app experienced a reset?
Sent from my NookColor using the XDA app
Ok, thanks for the info. So it seems possible that the reset was due to something else. Has anyone else experienced a reset?
Sent from my NookColor using the XDA app
I've experienced one of these, but before I'd ever installed your app. It was right after I had tried to install the Market/Gmail fix as described by Mister Muffin. Something about an authentication problem, and then, we're going to reset ... no yes/no option, just went ahead and did it.
ok, it looks like the reset i had was probably caused by something else. i have installed NookColor Tools to my /system/app, and haven't gotten another reset so far. please let me know if anyone has any problems when installing NookColor Tools to /system/app.
I installed vegantab and followed the directions to get the full marketplace on my gtab. However when i search for certain app they do not show up. At first i just thought they were apps that weren't compatible with android tablets but this does not seem to be the case. A couple of the apps are facebook and twitdroid. I know facebook came preinstalled on tap n tap so it should not be a compatability issue. Can someone please tell me what may be causing this?
Thanks in advance
Have you tried this post? It worked for me when I thought I had the full market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
This happened to me too. Even after I did the market fix as described in the ROM install thread. The previous poster has pointed you in the right direction, but more specifically these are the exact steps that fixed me. I take no credit for this other than finding it and passing it along.
Step 4.
Go into Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - Market - Clear CACHE - Force Stop
(For TnT/TnT Lite... Settings - Applications - System Applications)
Step 5.
Press back once - Google Services Framework - Clear DATA - Force Stop
Step 6.
Go back to your home screen and open up the market. You should get an error. If not, redo steps 4 and 5 until you do.
Step 7.
Reboot your device. After it starts back up let it sit for a minute or two to let things in the operating system normalize. Open the Market. Reboot your device.
Step 8.
Open the market again and enjoy. You should now have Flash and the Android Market.
I've always thought that "Full Market" didn't mean everything available in the market, but everything that the market believes it can install on your device. I've always double-checked by going to the web market and trying to "push" the app to my device to see if it is compatible.
Or is there something on the device that identifies itself on the market as to what it can have installed?
I wish there was a tablet market separate from phones. It would make things much easier.

but then you wouldn't be able to see the phone apps that work well on tablets. I would assume that most widgets are cross compatible. Even when going to iTunes from an iPad, they have the 'iphone apps available for you.
in the infancy of android tablets, if we could ONLY see tablet only apps, we'd all be limited to about 50-100 apps, most of which not all of us would have a purpose for.
I'm having a similar problem, even after following the steps outlined in the Clockwork/ROM thread. Not sure if it varies with the rom as I was able to get Zeam Launcher with the Adam rom, but not with TNT lite.
Following along to see if there are other suggestions...
So I had followed the steps when I originally flashed Vegan 5.1.1 and the Market didn't show up Apps, like Facebook for example.
For the heck of it I tried it again just now, after I've been using my tablet for a while, and now the Market works fully! I still can't see tablet Apps like the CNN one, but now I have access to lots of Apps I didn't before.
Another resource you could check would be 4shared.com. Search for cnn.apk or just .apk and you will see lots of other apps, not sure if they will all work, but its worth a shot.
FWIW... I ran the steps again last night (for the second time since flashing TNT lite) and got access to more apps. I was able to find zeam, but I still can't find ADW. Might try it again tonight just to see what happens.
Seems odd, but that's been my experience so far.

If you have Root Explorer you can alter your build.prop file to set your device as olympus and that gives you a full market, or at least the fullest I've seen. The following apps show up with this change:
firefox, adw, facebook, cnn, zeam, launcher pro, dolphin hd, flash 10.2, samurai vengeance, etc.
This has worked on Vegan 5.1.1, TNT Lite 4.4, G-Harmony 2.3.3, CM7, & Calkulin's v1.1 for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020130
I used astro file manager to change that file and then reapply the market fix. Still no apps like google docs on the market. Would this be an immediate fix or will it take some time for the market to register the change?
nvm: astro didnt actually save the modified file after editing it
Using root explorer now i guess the correct procedures would be
1) change the mount to r/w from r/o
2) modify the permissions of the build.prop to allow write access
3) modify build.prop
4) restore original permisions
5) change mount back to r/o from r/w
6) rerun market fix
Am i missing anything?
Read through the linked thread a bit more and seems that is all that is needed. Thanks for the point in the right direction.
This is what I do. Using Root Explorer I change the mount from R/W to R/O then alter the build.prop from Vega to olympus on that one line & then switch back to R/W. I don't change permissions. Then I go to settings>applications>market to clear market cache & then force stop. Next I go to settings>applications>google services framework to clear data & then force stop. Reboot. Then have full market. Always works for me.

Do you have the ability to do adb, or use terminal emulator?
If so re root your device, by runing NookandZergy.bat.

Then install Terminal Emulator, or use adb and issue the following command:
Code:

Here's some steps I posted on someone elses topic. I know you said you did the reset but give it a shot:
If it comes to it, power down, hold power and 'n' and it'll turn on, then come to the black background with the n logo then power off. Release just the power button and press and hold again for 7 more times.
On the 9th time just use the power button to turn it on and it'll prompt you with some warnings. Follow through with the continue and it will perform the steps.
BE WARNED: this will perform a complete factory restore so any installed apps will be gone but it won't touch your SD card.

Use this method.
Just turn off the nook tablet, and start it by holding the power and N button. Continue to hold and you will note that the tablet turns on then off. Do this 8 times, and you will be promped for a full factory reset.

there have been reports of honeycomb launcher force closing a lot. that is according to reviews from the android market...
the only suggestion i can give you is to move the honeycomb launcher apk to system/app if it is not there already
after that go to the tgps launcher and manage apps, try clearing data and cache for honeycomb launcher and reboot. hopefully after that you won't experience any more force closes for a while.
+1 I tried hcl a little and experienced issues so went to adw launcher ex. Much better, imho.

Do you know if you're using a modified SystemUI.apk? It sounds like you might be. There is one (that was not made when those videos were made) that removes the little B&N popup menu entirely. If you want that, you might need to revert to the stock SystemUI.apk.
The Home Switcher app will allow you to change your home button functionality as you like.
ENJOY!
Thank you all for your quick response...Much appreciate it...I apologize, but being a nubie & not that familiar with the terminologies I need some direction...
I recall that the last question during the rooting process had a reference to the

1- How do u move the HCL apk -> system/app?...
2- Why move the HCL apk -> system/app?...
3- How to access tgps launcher and manage apps, clearing data and cache for
HCL...
4- Should the HCL be uninstalled after performing the above followed by the
ADW Launcher EX install?...
5- Can I download(install) the ADW Launcher EX from the Android market?...
6. Once the ADW Launcher EX is installed how do I flip-flop between B&N
& ADW launcher?...
I read somewhere that to get rid of Honeycomb Launcher u can go to the Android Market > My Apps and click on HCL Launcher and then Uninstall...
And something about moving it 1st to /system/app rather than /data/app(???)...With all the choices getting confused with the proper course of action...Again, I would appreciate instructions for the best/quickest(safest) approach to correct this issue...
I really appreciate your willingness to help, not to mention that this is a learning experience for me and(hopefully) I will be able to help others as a result...
Many thanks...

Hit the THANKS button for those that have helped you [there are a few here] and to be honest, you're making this whole thing way more complicated than it needs to be. You really should learn how to use the XDA Forum SEARCH function more effectively so that you get better results for what it is that you're trying to do. As well, don't just hop on the first thing you find and try it without reading as much as possible about what it is that you're attempting to do. Also try to find corroborating information for that which you are attempting before attempting. Since you're new here, it can be a bit daunting but if you put a little effort into it, you'll find a lot of info and many people that will help you accordingly.
And Welcome to XDA Forums!

If you want to keep the stock behavior (i.e. the little popup menu that would allow you to access the stock home), DO NOT let N&Z install a new SystemUI.apk. You want the stock one.
sounds like you are on barnes and noble home screen and cant change back. you can install anycut to access menu again to force change between launcher, or download a new launcher from the internet and this will force the choice again... or download the hijack adb app and use it to patch with nook zergy to install a new launcher... or download my sd card image file and it has all the apps there to install from... got videos on many of these things on my you tube channel... however, if you have removed the N menu and set barnes and noble home screen to your default launcher, you may not have access to a method to install another launcher except to manualy push it over using ADB and a usb cable. If you ar at this point and not comfortable with command prompts, then I would just do 8 factory restore and start over with the SD card I made... I even made a video of how to recover a failed root process with the sd card. it has all the files you need so you dont have to go all over looking for them.

I stopped Solitaire, went back to my list of Apps & noticed that the Solitaire icon switched to the android icon...I tried opening it, but got some sort of error stating that it couldn't be opened so I ended up un-installing/re-installing...How do I determine if an Apps. is closed(not running) and what's the correct way to stop it and re-claim used memory/storage?...How do I move stuff around between data <-> system files?...
Again, many thanks(trying to get all my questions in as I learn more about this conversion)...
Hi all,
I've sort of bricked my new razr this morining after a reboot...
after reading the thread about trebuchet, I saw that it is adviced to put it in the system folder of the ROM. I then did the same with my current launcher to improve the speed of it (I don't know at all if this is a good solution but I wanted to test anyway).
Problem now is that my launcher force close at phone boot with a basic message saying that the launcher has stopped and a single 'ok' button. when I press 'ok' the same message appear again after a few milli seconds and does not allow me to launch any task.
Then I guess that the only solution for me is to re-upload my ROM (Motorola Razr latest OTA) and that this will suppress my launcher in the system folder but I wanted to share this experience because maybe someone could know a good solution.
Thanks for your help!
Can you go into system settings before boot and just change the launcher? Possible like this
go home, menu, settings, applications, manage applications, running, scroll down to find ADW launcher, open, scroll down and click clear defaults. then when you go home, it should give you a choice to pick your desired launcher. Be sure to check the box on the bottom of the choice box to set your default launcher to your desired choice.
Actually, the launcher started to crash before the system gave me the hand and allowed me to do anything. No way to perform any action with the phone (not any action, nothing was possible under the ROM itself)
Then I finally found some time to get my computer and re-upload the official ICS OTA ROM of the Razr. It had done basically 2 things (and one was the one I was expecting or hoping): lose the root (obviously) and lose the settings of the 2 apps I putted under the phone /system folder.
After that I removed the 2 apps that were installed on /system and changed my default launcher to stay safe :fingers-crossed: (done today, that's why I came back to the thread now)
Everything is ok now.
BTW, I discovered that in the worst case, it is possible to do a full wipe / factory reset under the official / native Razr recovery, and even better, it is possible to install a ROM under this recovery.
Everything is under control at the end.
Thanks for your answer!
I have found a good work around for those of you who may enjoy more usable space on your screen. With the screen the S4 comes with it only makes sense to use it. Only follow these steps after you are running on Hyperdrive ROM successfully (I am guessing this will work with other roms as long as Xposed Framework can be installed).
Background Work (no major changes yet)
1) Open the app Hyperdrive Control
2) Navigate Custom Settings > Advanced Mods > Framework Installer
3) Click Install/Update
4) Select the tab 'modules' from the top
5) Check all the boxes you see (I had 3)
4) Click Reboot
Let's get started
1) Reopen Hyperdrive Control
2) Navigate Custom Settings > Advanced Mods > Per App DPI Settings
3) Select Google Keyboard
4) Turn the switch to ON
5) Enter 160 for DPI, 100 for Font and check the box labeled 'xlarge res'
6) Click save and click yes.
7) Repeat steps 4-6 with the apps Swype and Samsung Keyboard
8) Make sure you followed the above steps then continue
9) Now find an app called Android System from the list and select it.
10) Enter 280 and don't change anything else (I don't know what you would be doing so I stayed away)
11) Click save and click NO.
12) Restart and enjoy.
I went back and changed System UI to 340 as I didn't like how small the notification bar became. Also recommending ExDialer as the stock keypad won't 'stretch' and lastly as a must, look into a good launcher. I am using NOVA Prime.
If you want to undo changes you can simply turn everything 'Off' and click Save and No. Then restart.
Hopefully this helps some!
If I am missing anything or if anyone wants to add more detail let me know! Side note: random but AOSP helper was installed on my device also allowing easy toggle from 3G to 4G with JuiceDefender...

Mods can you list this as a [HOWTO]... sorry left that out.
awesome.. .thank you!
OMG thank you for this, i has given up on how to do anything on it. I did not know how to use Xposed frameworks, this is what i needed, than you very much:good:
Has anyone tried changing the overall system DPI and then changing just the misbehaving Samsung applications back to stock (i.e., Contacts/Dialer, Camera)? I pretty much manually set all of my apps to between 320 and 340, but the Notification dropdown is way too big. (Email and Gmail both at 320 in order to become usable).
This made my launcher grid super tiny and the keyboard is unusable it is so small. I can imagine how some slight DPI adjustment could be good, but this is aweful!
that being said, I will use this method to adjust things how I would like them.
I'm glad it worked well for you guys but both of those changes made things worse for me. I put it back on stock and am very happy with it.
I'm running 320 DPI in my build prop. To fix the dialer I went into the per app DPI and changed the contacts app and phone app to stock 480 DPI and also the calculator app as well. They all run just like stock now no problems at all
Forgot to mention gallery as well

im using 360 in my build.prop. and have had no problems. only thing i had to fix was my market. which i used this market found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1839871
using the correct version of the one in my current rom(hyperdrive). Dont ask me why this works. But someone else said they tried it and it worked. so i did and it worked. Sometimes ive noticed it will all the sudden on reboot, change to a different version of the market. But that has only happened a couple of times. and usually it didnt matter(most apps still showed up like normal). But i dont know that this will work the same way for everyone since it seems to be a semi flakey method.
It works fine in HyperDrive RLS 4. Don't try to change the build.prop for the first boot, though. Let it boot once, then change it. Let's just say that the results were a hung device first.
I added clock back to 480 because there are issues with it.. The year view in Calendar is a bit off, but that's the only screen that doesn't work right... The Market works fine at this resolution (360). This is much easier than what I was doing before...
Now Touchwiz can be somewhat usable as it isn't huge gigantic text everywhere (even on the Tiny selection in Screen)
My system ui keeps crashing whenever I change anything related to Android System. Followed the directions but no luck so far.

That's why I just went the other way around and changed build.prop then made things larger as needed. Less problems this way...

I will be the first to admit that I am not an expert at this in anyway. This is just how I got it to work...
You said Hyperdrive Build 4 is working for you? I flashed it and have had nothing but troubles so far. It always hangs at SAMSUNG Custom boot screen... I have tried everything and now once I went back to my Nandroid of 3.1 it boots up with no issue, Then I go to reboot through the power menu and it hangs on that screen again.

PS I guess an easier approach also to allow most programs to stay stock would be to allow the android system to stay stock and just change what you need like the launcher...
I had the same problem about system ui... make sure you are pressing NO to the option it gives you and then reboot. I also had some DPIs that the phone just didn't like (240)... everything kept fc'ing...

I had problems with the first two downloads. Then I was able to get one to work early this morning... Also note that it is supposed to be a wipe'd flash, so make sure you do the format data/cache 3 times, then format system... I generally do a flash of the rom first to make sure that there aren't problems, though, before I format system...
I only use 320, 360, and 480's as DPI's on the S4.
Your approach is the way I used to do, but I wanted everything smaller, so every time I installed a program, I changed it to 320/360.. But then I wanted 320/360 to be the overall and only make exceptions for the things that demand stock DPI.
Understood - I didnt wipe to flash as i never did before without an issue. I am downloading stock ODIN now as something is up with my data partition...? It hangs on every second+ boot from restore/install and will not even boot off an install. I will go to stock odin, root, recovery and then install. Also downloading a fresh copy of Hyperdrive RLS4... Thank you for the tips.

Found a better way!
Okay so I am now on RLS 10.2.0...
Download some type of Root file manager... I paid for/use Root Explorer love it.
Navigate to /system and long press build.prop
Find the line that contains screen density =480 and change it to your desired DPI (I am using 280)
From there all apps/everything is changed to that dpi... some stock apps you will have to use xposed to change them back to 480 just to make it work because they show different resolutions horribly.
I followed these steps...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2269483
works great! Enjoy.. Also on the Multi DPI stock app post, the only one that works with the Verizion phone is the Gallery S4 v2.zip file... The others I am trying to work with the dev on getting up and running for our phones.
