to jump ship when AT&T takes over? I know I don't want to stay, looking to find out about cancelling the contract once the deal goes through (fingers crossed it won't)....
I don't remember exactly, but I remember hearing Cingular customers were pretty much treated like dirt when AT&T took them over, so I'm definitely looking at alternatives. Problem is that I don't think I can ever go back to CDMA... so I may be stuck with AT&T... argh! This sucks!

Our plans won't be changed until our contracts for 2 years are over.
Then you can jump
Come on folks. Just enjoy the phone you've come to love for as long as possible before you consider jumping ship. For all we know it might turn out ok. Gonna be a better device and some great deals when we have to make a decision. Hang in there.

Uhm, this is about carriers not phones.
Unless if your going to Verizon.. then you can just swap sim cards after unlocking...
I'm more concerned about carriers, service and cost. I don't want to go backwards to CDMA, but Verizon speeds are proven to be better than AT&T in large markets, their customer service is known to be substandard, and they're heavy into data caps from what I've read. Doesn't look good in any case. I thought the government broke them up years ago to prevent this exact kind of things from happening. What happened to competition. I've come to love Magenta for the things that the others aren't, out of the box, price competitive and excellent with customer service. Gotta start thinking though about the future.....
I'm a little concerned about this...
T-Mobile gets crap coverage where I am (EDGE Network only) until I get over to the big city (about 30 miles east) and then I jump straight to 4G. AT&T gets better service, but once my contract is up I'll have to start paying AT&T rates, correct? That's my only real concern. The whole reason I went T-Mobile was because they had the cheapest rates for data...
Guess I'll just have to go back to CDMA when my contract expires...sigh...

That is why the deal isn't official yet. That is the "bureaucracy" they are talking about taking 12 months to figure out. There is a chance this may not happen. It might be a very small chance but a chance none the less.

Let's hope! T-Mo gets $3 billion from AT&T if it falls through, which I would hope they would use to make themselves even better and stay independent.

and i have to say that it actually wasnt half bad.
one thing that i was kinda hoping not to be true was to feel the lesser speed which i did feel.
the LTE does seem promising. i got a full signal and i can't say that it was "blazing" fast on at&t's LTE, but it was great.
i could only imagine if it were an exynos chip how much more great it would be.
also, the vivid is a great phone for the cost. smooth, fast, and great in your hands.

yeah i did, but not much. i don't want ppl on here to go crazy denial on me like they did on my other post. lol
but i did feel it. but then again, i had my SGS2 oc'd to 1.5ghz. so it blew it away.
but at 1.2ghz, it was nearly the same. OG SGS2 a "little" faster.
but i was impressed. even though it has the same res as the SGS2, the screen wasn't horrible. put it like this: if you live in an LTE market and DONT have an OG SGS2 already, i'd get it. honestly.
plus, at&t is going to stop selling the OG SGS2 after nov. 6th.
but that's only at actual at&t stores, idk about like best buy, radioshack etc.

i have no idea why they are going to stop selling it. it's messed up and we were all shocked about it.
they're even going to stop selling the atrix 2(which isn't great) but you get me?
i think it could only be in LTE markets, but still, it's the best phone we offer.

Do you guys literally just make this stuff up? The company I work for pays about $1.5MM a year to AT&T and our corporate rep happened to be in today. We talked about LTE strategy, devices, and the merger. The strategy all along was to offer both phones as they appeal to different audiences. The ASGS2 actually has more features for corporate use (lock down) and is selling and expected to continue to sell well. They've offered aggressive corporate pricing since it launced and consider it a cornerstone phone for the corporate market.
Do you know how much it costs to launch a phone marketing wise, train staff to support it, and provide h/w service and replacements for two years after it's launched? It isn't like the Skyrocket snuck up on AT&T after they launched the ASGS2. If they didn't intend to sell both they never would have launched the ASGS2. So unless you know something that a major account rep doesn't it's hard to take what you said seriously.

This.
Also, anyone who knows anything about marketing or brand management would know that to axe the ASGS2 after barely a month would be near-suicidal. Especially when the ASGS2 was touted as the rival to iPhone 4/4S and AT&T has been doing everything it can to wean itself off that dependency especially now that it's available on other carriers.
So far we've had... a dark horse who won't even identify himself, and a 3rd party retail-level employee do nothing but speculate.

No its not. Corporate stores will only order them for you. But starting this wknd even that is going to be to an end. :/
It already sucked that they never sold em in stores. Well, corporate stores. Lol.

Maybe they're just taking their original SGS2's and replacing them with their new LTE chip, so that way, they're not necessarily restocking or anything...

Dude, you haven't given proof of -anything- you've said over the past day or two. Nothing. No pictures of the new phone, no docs suggesting they're even thinking of completely removing the i777 from the market. How the hell can you even think that they would completely remove one of the -best- phones on the market?
As far as I, and many others can tell, you're just speculating on what will happen. There is no way you can know these things if you're a normal ATT employee. If every normal level employee knew this, there would have been massive leaks of this info as soon as they found out. And I -highly- doubt you're some top-level employee by the way you write and the way you're addressing everyone else.
There isn't even any documentation that you even work for ATT, I even find that hard to believe.

What does pride have to do with it? They will market LTE heavily in the areas that have, but they will not discontinue a phone that sells well to force people onto LTE. The store reps will BS the consumer into thinking the LTE phone is the greatest thing in the world.
Um... When did you tell us about the skyrocket being a "wack" snapdragon? Everyone correct me if I am wrong, but didn't information from sites/press release and the fact that the phone is out in Korea indicate the specs? Also let us not forget the fact that qualcomm will not or doesn't have to capability built in to offer an LTE solution that doesn't use their chips.

Isn't this the PRL that causes you to use Verizon's towers, making people with high bandwidth usage get terminated from Sprint, and also helping the people who want to avoid an ETF get out of their contract without paying, hurting the rest of us?

He is part of the solution as far as I am concerned. The ETF fees are filled with greed and are only a tool to hold people hostage. If there are ways to use their contracts against them, I am all for it. What he is doing is NOT illegal. I would argue that the steady stream of contract changes that we get sucked into by default are deceptive and low on the part of sprint.
PLUS... if he gets out, that is one less customer we have to worry about on our data stream... (assuming he would have been using it if there wasn't this other out option).

Let's take this one at a time:
1) ETF's are not a way for companies to use contracts against the customer. You sign a contract because you don't want to pay $600 for a new phone. You're more than welcome to buy the phone at full price and only use month to month if you want, thereby negating the need for any contract to get involved. Don't feel like paying full price for the phone, either? Well, then you're **** out of luck.
2)No, he is not part of the solution. By him skirting his ETF, he basically paid $200 for a phone, and then is getting out of his contract ETF-free, basically making Sprint lose money on their sale of that device.
3) While it does mean one less person on the data stream, freeing up precious bandwidth for the rest of us, it is also one less customer for Sprint. One less paying customer mind you. If too many people do this, Sprint is going to have to make changes to make money, and you know what will be the next thing to go? Say goodbye to your unlimited data.
So, it's one of two ways. Either buy your phones at full price without contract, or pony up the ETF if you want to leave. Don't **** it up for the rest of us, asshole.

they won't boot you right away. It usually takes a few Billing cycles. I can see sprint eventually just charging the balls out of people you use that prl somehow.
I tried that prl a couple months ago when I needed to stream some video one evening. I must not have hit "commit changes" when changing back to 21081, and I stayed on it for over a month, using 6ish gigs of data. I have not yet heard anything from them about it luckily.

I used the 00001 prl this past week . I was in SC where apparently sprint decided "Eh we dont need any towers out here let Verizon cover it" I got tired of the phone constantly struggling for signal I just downloaded the PRL and flashed it on the phone to stabalize it some what .I mean hell the phone was going to be roaming anyways might as well give it the tower listings to get the best out of the signal I had access to . In my eyes thats Sprints issue not mine . They said they had the coverage well apparently they dont so they can chow down on the roaming charges . Maybe if they pay enough roaming charges they might get a bright idea to put a tower up in the area I was in .
Thanks for the heads up, just flashed mine and works great

I think its truely funny , I just tried the verizon prl at my home and compared it to the Sprint PRL (21081)
Verizon DL 2.01 UPL 0.75
Sprint DL 0.50 UPL 0.25
Tell me there isnt something wrong with this picture . As much as I hate to say it , all the more reason for my future transition back to Verizon . Yeah they cost alittle more but you get faster access and better coverage .
Flash 00001. Sync dropbox files back and forth from phone to DB then delete all of dropbox then do it again.. you should get your account suspended within about 5 gigs. Go sync the entire repo for ICS and then delete it and do it again. Maybe get a torrent or 9 while its going. WiFi tether everywhere for everyone. Open network with androidAP changed to maybe free internet for all. All on roaming. Sprint will drop u like a tweaker drops his rocks at the smell of bacon.

To be fair, not true. YOU can as a current Sprint customer, but if I were to have say, my wife decide to switch from Verizon to Sprint tomorrow, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY for her to join Sprint as a new customer without a 2 year contract, whether she pays $999999999999 up front for her equipment or not.

you could always unlock your Amaze before ya ditch t-mo altogether, that way you can still use it alongside your One X, just need a micro sim adapter
Edit: well, you can use it without internet, LTE plans don't play nice with non-LTE phones

He can still use it unless it is an LTE only sim which I doubt actually. I can unlock it for ya so you can use it on AT&T and use their HSPA+ network!

no its not that, its some shenenigans within AT&T's system, an LTE device can't access the internet unless you have their LTE data plan, even the HSPA+ network, I'm guessing it doesn't work the other way around as well, I know from experience how back asswards AT&T's system can be when setting up a phone
P.S: where were you when I was unlocking my Amaze? would have saved me some headaches working with T-Mobile

Well guys ... I am saying buh bye to T-Mobile. After loyalty dept. Told me to pound sand, I decided I had enough.
I am going to miss this forum you guys are a great bunch, not just phone stuff but personality wise. I can't believe it was cheaper for me to buy the one x , and pay my cancellation fee to T-Mobile, and... and get a better and cheaper plan.
T-Mobile has been really going down hill, with customer service ( YEAH I KNOW I heard ma bell is one of the worst) and I just don't understand why T-Mobile treats new customers better than am OG, like me. To the T-Mobile rep I pm'd here thanks for replying and being cool.
Well.... one x forums here I come. Lol.
Phone should ne in my hands tues. Or wed. Im excited.

Im curious what you asked for from them. I been a customer for 5 years and they just gave me a 250 credit on my bill for the Amaze and this months bill. I've never had a problem with the customer service. Im curious how your paying less with ATT, which I am assuming you jumped to because of the one X
Have fun paying more for service.

Im actually going to be saving a few dollars!
The only thing im losing is my grandfathered unlimited data, .... but I have never exceed 3 gb ever so ... its actually a decent plan.
And I like the rollover minutes thing.
And i do a lot of camping and T-Mobile has ALWAYS been a fail for me. But my friends who not only have iphonies(only saying cuz I thought iphonies had crappy reception) and with AT&T ... almost always have signals.
We will see. T-Mobile is funny..
.when I called and told them to cancel, my acct, and told them I was offered the one s , but said I hate penile displays and the storage was to small
You know what the rep said???
Well, sir, ill tell you what, I can offer the one s practically free for you..
I almost went into rage mode...lmao.
I think what's really happening is this is the age of the downward spiral of customer service. Its not just T-Mobile/AT&T. Its everywhere.

Sorry to hear that. T-Mobile totally stuck their neck out to me last year. I went to Calgary and didn't turn off my data roaming. I even got a text as soon as I hit the border, telling me full well that the data rates are HIGH. I tried my best and minimized it's use. Well, I got home to a $850 bill. After talking to a few people, getting on my knees and begging forgiveness, they took 100% of the charges off.
I thought that was INCREDIBLE customer service. Who else would forgive $850 worth of data roaming charges???????

The one x is such a small upgrade from the amaze what's the point in switching? I think with the amaze having a leak for ics there really seems to be no point in getting another device for very close specs. Just my two cents only device on the horizon worth waiting for would be the galaxy s3

Can you go into a little more detail? I'm not sure what you raged about.
They offered you a phone?
I'm not sure why you experience was so bad.
We've had t-mo for something like 7 years.
I called the loyalty department and asked what they could do for me, and they gave me a $250 credit to cover the cost of the amaze, and dropped our plan price $80/mo

+1 i love tmobile.. great plans, great customer support (even though im on prepaid i get good support). they are the best gsm you can get in the US imo. id rather have verizon but i dont have the money, and they dont really have that great of phones.
Yeah today I called in for something on my account and when the rep said if there was anything I was unhappy about I just said I sometimes get one bar to none of service at home which in reality I get 1-2 bars. They quickly transferred me to the signal booster program and even gave me 250 credit. So now I should be getting full bars within the next couple days and not make a payment for at least two months! Also isn't the warranty program through t-mobile cheaper in replacing phones, and the add on features as well.
After the att break up t-mobile is actually going back up in the competition and they are starting by improving customer service. It's sad you left right at the turning point specially for a phone that is not that much better than the amaze. I wish you luck.

we need another petition regarding kernel source!! i thought maybe we would get lucky seeing they gave the DNA source faster then they nornally do.. but nope!! back to the same BS
...........why?
This doesn't affect us at all.
If you're not under contract, the carrier will unlock it for you. If you're still under contract, you shouldnt be able to unlock it. Personally, I think this is good legislation.
Fair point Rxpert. I figure just because it doesn't affect CDMA users really, doesn't mean we can't act. However, I suppose that in terms of whether its good legislation, I really hadn't thought too much about the busines/economic perspective of the legislation. I mean, unlocking could drive phone prices up, I suppose. But GSM users are really pissed about this. They count on being able to switch phones easily (via sim swap) (which I envy) and I know many people are furious about this. I've even seen rants of it here,...figured I'd provide an outlet/recourse.

Not to be a downer, but my guess is the petition will amount to nothing. The website the White House has set up for the people to petition only grants a response from the WH with enough signatures. Not like it's going to be seen by Congress. At any rate, isn't this along the same lines as not being able to bring my Sprint phone to VZW? We've never gotten anywhere with the ability to clone or port ESNs, so this only seems to be the same thing. Even if I buy my phone cash for $549.99 plus tax, it's still only good on Sprint.

Not quite, SOPA outcry definetly hammered down an ugly internet agenda the RIAA & MPAA would've jiized over.
This time its the carriers who will be wetting their panties over this.
Screw that.

First I want to say that I am in no way in support of this new ruling. It's just my opinion that we need to be petitioning the carriers or even the manufacturers of the devices. I don't think a comparison the SOPA is relevant though. That was something that would affect almost anyone that used the internet, allowing the government to shut down entire domains at will. We have to understand than the vast majority of people couldn't care less about unlocking a phone, so this law would have no effect on them. That's why the SOPA was in the headlines for weeks, maybe even months. It was a huge potential for a government power grab..locked cell phones, not so much.
I stand by opinion that the online We the People petition won't do much. I hope I'm wrong, but I really don't think enough people give a crap about this. Those of us who want an unlocked phone or even have the know how on how to do it are the few. I think the argument here is that you can indeed purchase an unlocked phone, just not one that's subsidised. Bottom line is, do folks like us care? If it were illegal to S Off your phone and flash roms would you not do it? Goes back to my earlier question. How is this any different than locking an ESN to a carrier? Where's the outcry over that? And if there was, how many everyday folks care?

Even for gsm users though.. the only reason to unlock a device under contract I can think of is because you've stopped paying the bill and the device has been blacklisted.
Obviously carriers don't want that, and if you signed a contract pony up and fulfill it.

The law doesn't specify contracted phones, the law also doesn't protect gsm travelers going international or off contract phones that are still carrier locked.
Its too broad & flawed.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2012-26308.pdf Here's the full document for anyone interested. Start at page 16. If I read it correctly sounds like the carriers are saying that even though you own the phone, you don't own the software. That the software is licensed to you. Maybe someone else can read and correct me. Again sound like they are locking gsm phones to the carrier same as cdma phones are. Only difference is you can buy a non subsidiary phone factory unlocked say from google or apple.

Right, this is how it came through the DMCA. They list that as a copyright violation.
random question - off-contract paid for cell phone, is there any provision that the carrier has to allow you to unlock the phone, or can they just say tough titty, move along?

From what I've read and understand, doesn't sound like they are obligated to unlock it. Although ATT says that they will after the 2 years. Now, I obviously can be wrong, but that's what I'm gathering. Like I said, looks to me like they carriers are keeping the branded phones locked to their carrier. Same as cdma phones are. Nothing is stopping anyone from buying an unlocked phone directly from Google, Apple, Samsung, etc...Personally I don't ser it as a big deal other than I hate the government opposing it's will upon the American people..I could go on all day about that, but that's another discussion all in itself lol..
