5. MOD Full Ubuntu
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1000316
(I stopped after the script, I did not update coreutils, etc. etc. I did my first attempt and only mouse worked not keyboard. May just be a fluke)
6. Grab the synergy deb for ARM (THANKS PERKZ !!!!)
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sourc...54083/+files/synergy_1.3.1-5ubuntu2_armel.deb
7. Do the all the steps on [How To] Simplified webtop customization
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983208
8. Plug in phone to HDMI monitor
9. I used Android Terminal Emulator on my home screen in mobileview and ran
1. su
2. /usr/bin/sudo -H -u adas bash
3. export DISPLAY=:0
4. /usr/bin/.lxterminal
(These are steps in [How To] Simplified webtop customization)
10. In lxterminal I ran
sudo dpkg -i --root=/osh --force-overwrite /sdcard/download/syn*.deb
(/sdcard/download is where I saved synergy/1.3.1-5ubuntu2 deb package)
11. Ran /usr/bin/synergyc -f mulder (My Synergy server name)
** Already had synergy server running on my WIN 7 x64 PC. In the server config I dropped a screen in and called it localhost.
Worked freaking perfectly

Whoa. 227 reads and no replies. Interesting.
Oh well... Works great for me.

I got Synergy working on 4.1.57, but only with the damn buggy android application. I downloaded it from here Synergy Android Client
It works when I launch webtop, but my Atrix randomly shuts off the damn wifi connection and I lose the server's mouse and keyboard.

I haven't tried it on 1.57 yet. Doing that tonight.
And yes you have to be on same net. Never researched why. It's never been a problem for me since my wifi and pc and on same net.

Yea. Wouldn't care about the same network but I'm still in school and was hoping to have access to my home PC, XP with eclipse, before intro to Java have the end of this semester to figure that out though. Hopefully I'll find something that can sit side by side with this so I can easily switch when I get home because synergy is too cool G'Luck with the update ^_^

You have lapdock should work fine. But of course you need to have someone install the client on your home PC. I think it uses port 5900 also, so you need firewall/router ports opened up.

Thanks. I've used pocket cloud on the atrix and Android vnc on my nexus awhile ago but performance wasn't great. As great as synergy I should say. Xendesktop express (free) is what I think I want for wan and connect anywhere. Not much documentation for that free solution and what I can find is a bit over my head but I'll get it. Thanks for your suggestion and all ya do on these forums. I'll be sure to write a clean tut when everything is ironed out because I think its our best "anywhere" solution for our webtop. Hopefully synergy can play nice with xendesktop because synergy is too cool when at home.

Keyboard on Mobile View
I got synergy working, and the mouse and keyboard work for the webtop environment. However, only the mouse works on the mobile view of the webtop. Is there a special setting I need to set for the keyboard to work on the mobile view?

I think I had the same problem. Never was in mobile view enough to figure it out. Just used phone keyboard.
That brings up interesting question. Does bluetooth keyboard work in mobile view on webtop? With or without synergy.

@dicksteele - Your link was broken, so I've gone through both of your posts and updated it to the proper jaunty .deb.
Also including link for jaunty quicksynergy .deb, however, the one found in this closed post is better, as you can specify your host name and your binaries path.
This works on 1.83 and the keyboard works fine in mobile view.
Hope this helps...

can somebody make a video on how to do this...

The NookBuntu Dev Team
devastatorx | penkia | lincore | munday | luciferii
CREDITS: munday for his initial work on this project, penkia for the wifi and touchscreen fixes. The guys who pulled off the vnc trick to get us thinking about how to make this a full fledged linux tablet. All the great developers for the nook and every other device.
*DISCLAIMER*
I'm not responsible, blah blah blah...if you are trying this...your warranty cherry was popped long ago
Q & A - This area will be updated as questions arise
Q: Why the skip from alpha 0.1 to beta 0.3?
A: Alot of testing and fixes were implemented behind the scenes. These images were not released due to usability issues. We wanted this release to be one that could serve as a daily build. And this comes relatively close.
Q: Will this mess up my current configuration?
A: If your current configuration runs from the eMMC, then no. It runs solely from the uSD card. As long as you don't mount your eMMC inside NookBuntu and start messing around with it, it should be fine.
Q: Is this awesome?
A: Yes, it is so awesome that if I were to speak anymore than a few lines about it's awesomeness, computers would become self aware, sheep would begin counting people, and pong would turn into tetris...
Q: Will this run from the internal memory?
A: This is being planned for a future release and currently only runs from the SD card. DO NOT FLASH IT TO THE eMMC!!!

NookBuntu Boot Partition - Download
md5: 316f8d6d44cb3d2c4a13f01da63c302e
We will need to make a bootable SD card for this. As of right now I have an 8gb card and will be uploading a burnable image soon...but for now this method will work.
Download this script and save it somewhere you have easy access to.
Download: SDMAKER
Ok so you have all the files right? Right?? ...right
Let's get that SD card prep'd for our NookBuntu installation.
1) Open up a terminal and cd to where you saved the file sdmaker.sh
2) Insert your soon to be nookbuntu sd card into your pc and find out where your sd card is mounted i.e. /dev/mmcblk0 or wherever. REMEMBER what it was (for me it is /dev/mmcblk0)
3) Type the following command hitting enter after each line
Code:
sudo chmod +x sdmaker.sh
sudo ./sdmaker.sh /dev/yoursdcard
4) Let this command run and finish out, it is formatting your sd card to correctly have a boot and filesystem partitions
5) Once this has finished you should have two new partitions show up, either mounted already at /media/boot and /media/Angstrom or should be able to mount the new partitions in your file manager. If they aren't mounted go ahead and mount them.
Let's regather. You have two folders open on your desktop, one titled "boot" and the other titled "Angstrom". Are you with me? Good.
6) Untar/7zip/Unzip whatever...decompress the file nookbuntu-0.3beta.tgz anywhere you would like.
7) cd to the directory where you extracted the files. There should be a folder titled "system" Go ahead and cd into that directory.
8) Now we need to copy all of the contents to the Angstrom partition on your SD card
Code:
sudo cp -r * /media/Angstrom
This will take awhile, get something to drink.
9) After that has finished lets copy over the boot partition. Go to where you downloaded the file "nookbuntu-boot.7z" and extract it. Now CD to nookbuntu-boot. Are you with me? Let's copy those files over!
Code:
sudo cp -r * /media/boot
10) After that has finished we need to setup your wifi so it will work. So let's edit the one of the files we just put on your sdcard (use whatever text editor you would like:
Code:
sudo gedit /media/Angstrom/etc/wifi/w2.conf
In your text editor you will have something like this:
Code:
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
network={
ssid="WiFiNetworkName"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk="yourWPAkey"
}
We need to change a few things to be able to connect to your home wifi.
Change the following:
Code:
ssid="WifiNetworkName"
to
ssid="YourSSID"
Obviously replace "YourSSID" with whatever your actual SSID is.
Chances are you are using WPA encryption...well if you aren't...you should be. Assuming you are we need to set up so we can send the key to the router when we connect.
See this line?
Code:
psk="yourWPAkey"
Change "yourWPAkey" to...you guessed it....your WPA password
Save the changes and exit.
11) Unmount the sdcard from your computer
Code:
sudo umount /media/boot
sudo umount /media/Angstrom
12) Take the Sd card and put it in your nook while it is powered off.
13) Power on your nook and give it a few mins...voila! NookBuntu should have loaded!
These next steps are for getting wifi up and running you can do this from an ADB shell or from the terminal inside NookBuntu or make it into a script for future use.
Enter these commands (hitting enter after each line unless otherwise noted)
Code:
killall wpasupplicant
ifconfig tiwlan0 up
killall connmand
wpa_supplicant -Dwext -i tiwlan0 -c /etc/wifi/w2.conf & dhclient
You should shortly be associated to your home network!
Enjoy NookBuntu! Make sure to thank all the great devs who have a hand in this project!

Wow, going to bed tonight, but I am definitely trying this tomorrow, I hope this is inevitably usable on the nook color, that steps up it's usability as a tablet.
Just a suggestion for the Mods, we should have a second forum for ubuntu on the Nook, that way it doesn't clutter up the android development and then it can expand and be organized for developers of linux vs android, might draw some more interest into this!
Honestly can't wait to try this though, good work

I'm going to wait a bit before giving this a shot, but seriously, thanks! I'm excited about the possibilities. Do you think our hardware will be prohibitive to using this in the long-run? I know it's really early, so if that's a silly question, feel free to disregard it.

At this stage it is difficult to say as not everything is working (no hardware acceleration, sound, etc)
As of right now the device runs pretty smoothly for what it is and is more responsive than it was when using the vnc method. I will be working more on the build this weekend and hope to establish a development team to keep things moving forward with consistant fixes and updates.
With a good, dedicated development team we should make some exciting progress in the near future.

Negative. This is a ububtu installation. The script just names that partition "Angstrom".

Ubuntu 10 or 11? Unity would be most worthwhile for our devices . And bugger all, I guess I'm going to have to pick a new microSD.
Ubuntu 10. As of right now there are some path issues so I am unable to get the unity-2d gui to load. Will have this fixed in the next release.

Unity would be rather nice. Especially if we can get GPU acceleration working.
Perhaps this is a silly question, but... have you given any thought to packaging updates in some form that doesn't require downloading the entire distribution again? Yes, I can see there being issues if you don't apply them sequentially if it comes out in a zip of some kind... but it'd save you/us a ton of bandwidth. Maybe if it's all in SVN or GIT?
I'm stuck here:
Code:
sudo cp -r * /media/boot
It says "/media/boot" is no directory
MAD PROPS keep up the good work this is what android is all about might have to buy another nook color one to install in the car and one to use every where else .

What OS are you using? The drive may be mounted elsewhere and my instructions are based off of the drives first partition being mounted at "/media/boot" and the second partition mounted at "/media/Angstrom". If this is not where the partitions are mounted then adjust the instructions for where you have them mounted or remount the device's partitions to these folders.
This should help...but I'm not saying this to be a jerk or anything...this is an Alpha and is in no way intended for daily use. Only those comfortable in Linux, and feeling adventurous should give this a go. Future releases (beta and onward) should be stable enough and easy enough to install for daily use.
To address the updates question:
I may implement a kind of crude package system after I get to a stable enough release to call it a beta. Such packages will include the modified system files and an install script to set the new update up. But like I said, that probably won't be until beta.

This is a port of scrosler's CleanTool 2.1.1 . All credit to scrosler, nils, and everyone else I don't know that contributed to the work found herein. I'm just the script monkey that whipped up the Linux version.
YOU MUST HAVE THE LINUX ANDROID SDK INSTALLED TO USE THIS
If you can't figure out the Android SDK here are a few helpful links
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
http://www.talkandroid.com/guides/developer/android-sdk-install-guide/#.TuaS3lxjgSM
So now that you have the SDK installed...
1) Unzip Cleantool_Linux_v1.zip
2) Open a command window, change directory into your Cleantool_Linux directory
3) Run ./cleantool.sh

Now I need to find out how to get "wireless tether" to work. Any suggestions?
Sweet ! Now I just have to get my ADB fixed...
Yeah, I know right! I have been running Linux (ubuntu from 2008- Feb 2011, then switched to Linux Mint Debian Edition from Feb 2011-now) all of my computers for years now and every time I get ready to root and mess with my phone, I have to go through Windows inside of Virtualbox or find a way to run the rooting script through a terminal and ADB. Fortunately, MrSmith was here to save the day!!!
On a different note, I was able to install both "wireless tether" and "wifi tether" and get both apps to run and broadcast the wifi signal. When I try to connect to it on my laptop, it tries but then fails with "no connection". Not sure what the problem is yet, but I am playing with "wifi tether" and it's menu's to see if I can find a solution. It has the options for you to "Change your Device profile" which I am hoping might help. (probably not, but it used to help on my old droid x)
Looks good man!

I tried to get it to work for about 3 hours without freezing tetheringguard. Then as my research continued, I noticed that everytime I tried the wifi tether app, the tetheringguard service/app would be running when I checked my system monitor. So I disabled it by adding it to the script. I did not disable mobile hotspot, but maybe I should. I tried to get it to work for about another 3 hours after disabling tetheringguard and still NO GO. But as to not mis-lead you, the wifi tether app actually successfully broadcasts the wifi signal, the problem is that when I try to connect to it using my laptop, it connects with a "no connection" (red x on ethernet symbol) and then immediately disconnects. The wifi tether app doesn't show that the laptop ever connected.
Here are some strange things:
1. scrosler PM'd me and said that he successfully got the newest pre alpha build (assuming it is wifi_tether_v3_1-pre108.apk) to work last night. He said that the only things that he changed in the settings is checking the MSS Clamping and Routing Fix. He said that he PM'd me using the tethering wifi!!! aghhhhhh
2. why does my linux nm applet show the ssid signal from wifi tether as having both the wireless icon and the Ethernet jack icon?
3. why does it connect at all to the Ethernet jack icon, even though it immediately says no connection?
4. I would have to say that the behavior is similar to what happens when you try to run the Mobile Hotspot app on the rezound without paying for the service. When you click it, it spins the "waiting wheel" and then pops up the message about calling Verizon to get that feature.
I hope all this helps us to somehow figure out what the problem is. I am very frustrated at how easy scrosler said his works!!!!

He said that he PM'd me using the tethering wifi!!! aghhhhhh

Its time to try connecting to another device.
Do you have any other WiFi devices you can try with?
Had to buy a Christmas tree last night so I was out of it. I'll get on this tonight. I run Ubuntu at home (as well as Win XP an Win7) so I can test this out from a bunch of devices. I already have tetheringguard and hotspot disabled because I'm never paying them for the privilege of using my data connection the way they want me to. I do have wifi tether installed already (3.1 beta 7) so I'll also play around with scripting the temp root locally while I'm at work just to see if i can get it to work...
And they pay me for this ...

Yes, I will try that tonight. I thought about trying to connect my PS3 to it, but haven't tried it yet. I will report back tonight.

That will be awesome! I feel the exact same way about the "privilege" of something I already pay unlimited for! (we have to be careful with our comments about paying Verizon for their Mobile Hotspot feature, because scrosler told me that he DOES PAY for it!!! And we wouldn't want to upset him )
Between the three of us, I'm sure we can get it to work.
Really!!! You lucky dog...

Just a heads up I don't know if the PS3 supports Ad-Hoc networking. I've never tried with the PS3 or Xbox 360 but I know it works for all of my laptops.
I'm having problems getting this working on my Macbook Pro with Lion. I've tried both the Mac Android SDK and the Linux one. I was able to get the Mac SDK to run and install the extra programs the links you posted suggest, but executing your script fails. As I recall it said something like failed to execute binary. Where do I need to put your script in relation to the SDK? I was able to get temp root and cleean by installing the Windows version on my computer at work, but it would be nice to be able to regain temp root when I'm travelling with the laptop. Thanks for your work on this.

Try this: copy ADB from your installed SDK into the Cleantool folder. If you can post the errors/screenshot because it's always easier to troubleshoot that way.
Success
Thanks. That seems to work.

[APP]Ubuntu Install Guide -Atrix Testers wanted

Hello guys,
Thank you all for the amount of support you have given this project! I have now decided to stop updating this thread. If people still have bugs or want to keep following this project please go to the Main project thread HERE.
I will stop updating this thread because I feel we now know what roms/kernels do and don't work so there is no need for me to keep updating this thread (And the other 5 threads I run for certain devices), but of cause if you do still have problems reply to the main thread or PM me!
Once again thank you all!!
I have released the first version of my app, which guides you through the installation of Ubuntu within android via chroot. It includes a ubuntu 10.10 image I have been working on which includes lots of program to allow users to develop program/scripts etc within Ubuntu on there phone/tablet.
However I have only been able to test the app on my HTC Desire S and Gen 8 Archos tablet and as such I need you guys to test this on your phone/tablet and post back how it works on your device!
Please post your device/kernel/rom along with what did and didn't work, so I can draw up what I need to change in the next release of the app/ubuntu build.

This is the image I get. Running darkside 4.2 lite, faux123 latest 1.3, fruitcake 2.3.5, debian mod. Used the lite app until it works then will purchase full version.
Included sh wouldn't connect but v3 connects just nothing to see.
Can move around just nothing to see. Let me know if you need any help or have anything you want me to try.
Sent from my awesome atrix thanks to all the devs here!
Does nothing when "sh ubuntu.sh" is typed.
Don't know if it's my rom (it's a foreign rom with no list of features) or the app.
Will this work with the lapdock? It has a rez of 1366X768, will it retain the lapdock functionality?
Try to download the ubuntuv3.sh and put it in the same extracted folder and run that in terminal. That is what I had to do. Then go to home and open and log in with vnc.
Sent from my awesome atrix thanks to all the devs here!
well it works with lapdock but they damn thing wont go into landscape on lapdock
Just curious for those running it, can you go back to normal android still from ubunto or do you have to wipe and reflash the ROM to get back to normal android? I want to test it but curious if I can revert back easier.

Thanks dude,
The file missing error is because it's trying to run a script in the Ubuntu image that starts vnc etc.
But as Ubuntu isn't mounting it can't access it.

Cool, learning this stuff with absolutely NO programming experience is way harder than I thought so I was just curious if it would help fully explain what its doing and why. Not sure if that makes sense to anyone but me but either way this will be an awesome tool and ill see if I can't get it running on my ubuntu VM. How would I send the file to my VM to install it on ubuntu? I'm using Sun virtual box with ubuntu 11.1 I think it actually may be 10.1 its been awhile since Ive used it.

Yeah you can use vm and just run it that way. I would recommend linux mint 12 over ubuntu 11.4 + or ubuntu 10.10 or linux mint 11.

Yeah it should work on all deb based distros. Have not tested it on rpm or arch yet.
I will be making it into a deb package and a windows exe in the near future.
It's a beta so I've only completed about 2% of the project so far.
There are about a million things that will/can be included. Just trying to prioritize them.
Lithid I was checking out your cm compiler. That's one feature I'm planing on including not really for cm but a stock aosp Rom compiler for any device.
Maybe we can work together on that if you are interested?

The content is from or based on fire314's, JDouce's and zacthespack's work. And their work is based on other people's work, so thanks everybody
Why is it better, than the sources I used?
-it's up to date
-works
-smallest download size
-less space required on sd/internal storage
-very detailed instructions
Why to use Ubuntu on an Android phone?
Why to overclock?! Just because we can do it To show off
And you can use Chromium browser to browse the web, you can edit documents in Open/Libre Office, etc.

Download
I recommend this Lubuntu img, made by zacthespack, edited by me.
It's less than 500MB to download, 1800MB img file size on the phone, and sports LXDE (leightweight desktop):
Filehosting.org
Ubuntu One
Dropbox
Google docs
It is the necessery script to run Ununtu/Lubuntu, made by fire314:
ubi.sh
Ubuntu One
Dropbox
It is an Ubuntu img (Gnome desktop), made by JDouce, modded by me.
It's almost 1GB to download and 2,5 or 3GB (I don't remember) on the phone:
Depostie Files
Fileserve
Then, there is the one made by JDouce without any mod.
Almost 1,5GB to download in 2 parts, and 3,5GB (as I remember) on the phone:
Part 1
Part 2
The original from zacthespack:
Link to he's thread
He works on it, and uploads new versions, so no need to place a link for the file itself.
There are 2 versions now:
Ubuntu - 1,5GB to download and 3,5GB on phone
Lubuntu - 500MB to download and 2,5GB on phone
Instructions:
1. Choose one of the images (will add more later) and download it, and get the script aswell
2. Unzip ubuntu.img and copy it and ubi.sh to your sdcard or internal storage, both files to the same folder
3. Open a terminal emulator and type:
su
Accept root permission request if appears, then type:
cd (name of the place where the files are. Example: cd /sdcard)
You can check if the files are there by typing „ls”. If everything is fine, than type:
sh ubi.sh
like this:
and if everything is fine you get this:
4.Open a VNC client and fill out the following
password: ubuntu
address: localhost
port: 5900
set colors to 24bit
5. Hit Connect button
6. Now you should set the "mouse"
touch Menu button
Input mode
Touchpad
Turning it off:
In the VNC client:
touch Menu button
Disconnect
In the terminal emulator:
touch Menu button
Close window
accept it
You can add, delete programs in Synaptic.
If you want to start Lubuntu/Ubuntu anytime, just do the 3rd and 4th steps ; )
I didn't do much. I just made some small changes. All the credits go to zacthespack, JDouce and fire314.
I know, that JDouce has a thread, but he doesn't do much nowadays. He edited the OP more than 5 months ago. And I think it's such a fun, that it deserves some more attention.
Troubleshooting:
If it doesn't start after step 4, or your phone reboots after step 3:
change kernel!
Siyah 2.6.8 changelog:
-fixed the bug which prevented using ubuntu and was causing some random reboots...
so earlier versions doesn't work
If it starts, but the mouse pointer doesn't move:
check the step 6 in the OP
If you can't read or mount the sdcard/internal storeage after turning Ubuntu off:
reboot
Download links are up!
Let me know which one is the fastest and where would you like to see the next versions uploaded.
And if you have any question or suggestion, don't hold it back
Unbuntu One link is a ~20 min DL. Dropbox is ~5 min.
sh may have taken 0.01 seconds or so
Hope to test this today, if not, soon. I'll let you know how things work.

I am looking for a way to get Asus Transformer Prime capable of developing Android Apps, so it might not just be funny, but also very useful
I did try to see if I could make my SGS2 dual boot, but it did not work for me so far. And I am not sure I would want this as the phones OS, although it is temping if it can also use one of those Android App players that seems to be in development. I am not sure if they are even trying to target Linux though.
But the possiblities of Linux on Android hardware is.... mindbogging

And I'll take a look at the v5 from zacthespak... downloading it right now

no, it runs from a ROM and it's Ubuntu linux
I like it and it runs faster than the other ubuntu 10.10 chroot release but my only problem is something seems wrong with the resolution the text is smaller and blurrier than the other release from before? Is it set for the galaxy s2 screen res or am i just seeing things?
