yeah it looks like the Zune desktop setup, a 6.9 Mb exe file, haven't run it, but it's probably the Zune update prompt to install

For some reason, My Dell will not upgrade to sp2. So I am stuck with an XP Pro Sp1 system - how do I get to SP2?
Is it possible to load Magneto with my current config (i.e. XP Pro sp1)?
Go to the windows update site to upgrade. It won't work if you're using a pirate copy of windows.
No Activesync 4 requires SP2.
ok. thanks - that must be why it won't upgrade.

Upgrade? You mean upgrading the ROM? This doesn't require ActiveSync 4, the upgrade program kills Activesync so it has RAW access to the device. But if you want to sync with a WM2005 device you need version 4.
1 : Download and Install :
Zune
NetFx4
2 : Create vm_web folder on C: extract the contents of the setup Windows phone 7 tools (vm_web.exe) package with winrar to C:\vm_web\
3 : Go to the folder and open the file baseline.dat in notepad
4 : Look for the section named [gencomp7788]
5 : Change the value InstallOnLHS from 1 to 0
Change the value InstallOnWinXP from 1 to 0
Save and close baseline.dat
6 : CMD+R C:\vm_web\setup.exe /web
Wait wait wait...
More simpler method below:

Hello everyone,
I want to simplify all those who want to install Windows Developer Phone Tools on Windows XP:
1) download the complete package at the official site
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=201927
2) extract the downloaded package to a folder
3) copy and overwrite the file attached to the folder where you extracted the package
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=467731&d=1292709004
4) run the batch file Install ...

I have used this method couple of times and I confirm it working on XP except you can not run emulator, that is not required in our case either I guess.
The problem is that I still could not unlock WP7. It stucks at Chevron unlocker stage. The same problem has been reported by almost all users here. I haven't witnessed anyone unlocking WP7 through WIndows XP machine.

"CMD+R" = Run
"C:\vm_web\setup.exe" = $path where you extracted vm_web.exe
"/web" = this is option for web installation
Here's the way I got it to work,

I finally got it to install on XP!
Here's what I did,
Download the .iso file (it's at the bottom of the page) :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=04704acf-a63a-4f97-952c-8b51b34b00ce
After, make a new folder on your desktop and extract the ".iso" file into the folder.
Next, I grabbed the ".zip" file from here, : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9618980&postcount=81
Take the baseline.dat from the .zip file and replace it in the one with the extracted .iso files. Then just run setup.exe from the file. It should work! But make sure you have about 3 gb free from your hard drive. And emulator doesn't work, but I'm sure its fine if your not a developer.
Remember to hit the thanks button if it worked for you!

SDK is useful in a sense that it atleast makes Chevron open on a XP machine. Without SDK, you can not even open Chevron.
But once you click unlock in Chevron, it always gives you error whatever you do.
I personally had to install WIndows 7 Ultimate on my laptop and then the whole process was like of 20 minutes hardly. No problems faced. The tutorials posted are fantastic and makes your life easy.
Exploring unlocked and activated WP7 on HD2
So we have to purchase Windows 7 and delete everything?
I do not have money to do this...I hope the devs find a way.
I LOVE windows phone even in the sad state mine is in. I have a Zune HD, and I haven't used it since WP7 came onto my HD2...If I could access the marketplace, I'd love it...guess I'll have to download it (windows 7) tonight...
i had the chevron unlocker working with XP SP3. I'll try it again in a bit to verify it again. will let you all know.
I checked and double checked. My phone was already unlocked, so i performed a Re-lock.
Ofcourse, I couldn't get it unlocked again under XP. Having probs now as well with Win7. Scratching my head now. lol

Emulator will never work on XP nor its required for you as you are willing to deploy things on actual device i.e. your HD2. In short, forget emulator.
For DotNet 4 issue, try installing it seperately.
great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I am reading this right, having the SDK installed on XP is beneficial regardless if Chevron works or not. This is how I see the events playing out:
Use a Wiindows 7 Machine to do the unlocking process with Chevron
Use the XP machine to do the side-loading of applications.
Once the Chevron process is complete, there should be no need for a Windows 7 based machine, as the app loading will work fine from XP.
Am I correct with how I laid that out? I ask because my main workstation is an XP machine. I have 2 Windows 7 machines (my HTPC and my laptop are both Win7); the HTPC is buried under/behind the TV and does not have easily accessible USB ports, and the laptop has a small (17") screen and I can barely see what I am doing on it, which makes it a non-feasible option.
Now, if I were to use the laptop for a few minutes to do the unlocking with Chevron, I should (in theory) be able to perform all of the other options on my XP machine...I hop I am correct with that assumption, as it will be the best way for me to go about it.

Hello. Can anyone help me with connecting my Lumia 800 to NCS?
When starting up NCS, i click Add new unit and the window then tells me that i need to plug in the usb to my phone and select NCS usb mode.
But i get no such option on my phone? Are there any specific drivers i need to install or something?
I think you must use Windows Zune application
Have you gone into the "driver" folder in Nokia Care Suite installation folder (where you installed it that is) and installed winusb drivers?

Hi,
I updated my Lumia 800 to WP7.8 using Nokia Caresuite. Now I tried to unlock it with the phone registration tool coming with WP8 SDK. I am using Windows 8. The problem is, that the phone cannot be connected. Further in Zune I can't see how much space I'm using on my phone. Is there a new Zune for WP7.8?

update:
Windows 7 and WP 7.1 SDK worked.

No, just go ahead to control panel and uninstall everything whose manufacturer is Nokia (no need to uninstall ncs, and, of course, don't touch zune), and, of course, reboot. I had the same problem and it helped me and couple of other people.
I had a similar problem on my bro's Win 8 PC (as I am an osx user). We couldn't deploy the xaps so we just uninstalled zune and downloaded it from microsoft's site again and it worked fine after that.
I managed to unlock my phone and deploy the apps through the WP7 SDK. Did it on Windows 7, though. Worked like a charm.

mind to pm me how to do it?
I had the same problems, I had to uninstall the drivers after use of the update software. For some reasons the drivers of the updating software did not seem the same as the Zune standard drivers. *using 64xWindows8
After uninstalling everything, worked fine again

All you need to do is uninstall the WinUSB drivers so the Zune drivers will be used again.
hey guys. i'm here because i too have a lumia 800 wp7.8 and it has been unlocked using the windows phone developer registration app.
the problem is, i can't deploy any application onto my phone. i've tried countless of .xap files to deploy (using Application Deployment) but the status keeps saying:
"XAP file is invalid".
My phone is registered. it connects to the zune software (which i have uninstalled and installed according to the posts above).
I tried it with Tom XAP Installer and it said "Make sure device is unlock" and "make sure it is connected to zune & pc".
I also tried it with MultiXap installer and it said "nullable object must have value".
Please help me!
Is there any way around this? greatly appreciate your help.

What kind of XAP's are you deploying? Pirated apps, your own, or copies from the Marketplace?
Do you have any error codes? Are you using WP7 or WP8 sdk, which OS?

My XAP files are downloaded from the Marketplace. I chose "Download and install manually" and that's how I got them.
No error codes. When I click on "Deploy", the App Deployment program just wrote "Status: XAP file is invalid".
I'm using the WP7.1 SDK with the SDK WP7,8 update.
My laptop is running Windows 7. My phone WP7.8.
Thanks for the quick reply
Hope I provided enough information!

No, you cannot install xaps from marketplace this way, why would you need that? All this apps can be installed via marketplace on the phone. The point of developer unlock is to install homebrew apps and those that cannot be submitted to the marketplace.

Updates are over the air. For music and photos you have the windows 8 client which installs automatically or just simply open the device through usb.
