Hello,
I'll cut to the chase cause i have a tendency to drag out the tiniest detail for ages, and i just wanna ask this XD
Basically, i have a Galaxy S II, and i love it, i started hacking it around august after owning it since the UK launch. I like to see myself as fairly competant when it comes to NOT permabricking it, however i still am hesitant to flash new roms, kernels cause of lingering fears.
So! What i came here to ask, is i am planning to purchase a second phone just for this reason, and have been looking at the Nexus One, HTC Desire, and original Galaxy S. Sadly i dont know much about the hacking scene of every other phone, so i dont really know what other choices there are.
Basically, what phone would you reccomend, even if i havent mentioned it, to buy purely for the community behind it?
Thanks,
Katy
The HTC Vision (aka the T-Mobile G2/Desire Z) has a great community of developers, cookers, and users. I was hesitant to start flashing custom ROMs initially after rooting as well. So I went back and hacked my old Motorola Cliq to test things out. I promise you if you can read and follow directions you'll have no problems flashing ROMs... there's a great variety of ROMs for the Vision and I expect in the not too distant future we'll also see Ice Cream Sandwich.

I would beg to differ on the previous HTC comment. I have an Evo. It's getting up in age, but I love it. There are tons of roms available for it, and even though development has slowed, you'd still be surprised at the amount of development happening. If you're looking for a phone solely for playing with, you'd have plenty of options with the Evo. You can get one fairly cheap, especially if you opt for one with a bad ESN - which you might as well since you won't be activating it.
It's nearly impossible to brick - the only way you could would be to pull the battery during a radio update.
Of course which phone you get depends on your wants and needs. Check out the development subforums for the devices you have in mind.

Nexus one and evo is different. Doesn't like HTC due to not giving out updates that they promised. Eg: HTC flyer is still in GB. If you wanted a true unbrickable phone, get a developers' phone. Instant update and super extremely easy to unlock. And it is fit for every update to give you full user experience.

The HD2 is an option too. Getting seriously old (but that much as dual core has still to be really used by the OS) but it sill has a lot of development going on, kernel and ROM wise...MIUI, CM7, Sense, WP7 and WinMo etc.
Okay please don't flame or move this post, I just want to reach as many people as possible. I am a former MyTouch 3G Slide user, and I must say, what happened to us? This phone (outside of its bugs) was the most magnificent phone I have had, in comparison to what I consider "First-Gen" android phones like the MyTouch 3G, Google G1, etc. I remember a time when I was flashing like crazy with this phone, expanding its possibilities and pushing it to its limit! Now I look at its forums, and they are practically barren with no development, despite the fact that Root AND S-Off are available! So I want to ask 2 things, how do you feel about the future of the slide, and where can I buy one, so I could possibly be of assistance, I was the ultimate android noob when I had this phone as far as development is concerned, but I have been studying and am now ready to take a crack at bringing some life back to this phone (doing things like porting Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 3.0 to the slide, and possibly MIUI, because I run it on my Evo 3D and the zip file is only 137 MB if im not mistaken, which is about 40-50 mb bigger than CM7.0.1 was when I had it on this phone, with optimizations and a little chopping, it is possible). I thank you all for listening and appreciate your feedback
Unfortunately, the devs all moved on to other devices (G2, MT4G, sensation... what have you). I feel like the timing of this phone is just simply unfortunate--after the first gen android phones, but also before the new flagship phones. Being an intermediate (don't get me wrong on 'intermediate,' I'm talking about timing here) product, mt3gs simply did not get nearly the attention it deserves.
At this point, since mt3gs has stopped production (iirc), there will probably be no more new devs coming in unless they specifically wanted THIS phone (which is unlikely because G2 and mt4gs just out-specs mt3gs in almost every regard).
Future of this phone? As much as I hate to say it, not much growth. The current dev(s) don't even have this phone (or a functional one). I'm staying here because I really liked the phone while mine was still working.
However, if you'd like to join, I believe you can buy one off ebay...
There are few developing for this device. I suggest you get with the few that are here to help with sense 3.5 and 4.0 (ics). As Daniel said you can grab one on eBay or even try Craigslist. This phone is at its limit. There's not much more to push, only update to stay with current software release. We have s-off, we have root for final official update, we have wifi tether and overclock so what more is there to do besides staying up to date with the OS? I will say that if you do successfully port miui to slide you will be the first...
Bringing different ports and software is all that can be done, as far as pushing impossibilities this device has reached its potential.
Hey whatever your skills may bring I thank you and look forward to your work.

Personally i feel this will probably be the last (or close to last phone i'll purchase) cause current trend of phones are into the McDonald's Super-Size-Me which i seriously hate! I want a phone that can actually fit in my hand and pocket comfortable and i don't need a 2 hand operation (one to hold and one to touch).
I am enjoying this phone and i would really love to see more development and i'm even jealous of the Huawei Ideos U8150 which got a working ICS before our phone! and that is one pathetic little piece of hardware compared to ours. Unfortunately i'm also into the Sense UI, so i have even more limited options.
Right now i'm using the Final Salsa Slide and besides the occasional WiFi reboots, i'm really loving how my phone works and don't really need anything else.
I think that the CyanogenMod team in about two months go to update all devices including our mytouch 3g slide to ice cream sandwich (cyanogenmod 9) or at least I think that.
I agree with you. I just dropped money on a tablet, but I have no interest in upgrading my phone. When things are working on the right rom, everything just works and I enjoy it tremendously. I am not interested in a huge phone either. I like the keyboard. I hope some development continues because I am not ready to let go
OK, because honestly, outside of it's bugs, I really miss the little pocket sized warrior. I love my evo 3d, but I can agree with the fact that sometimes it feels a little, ehh, clunky because of its size, I will definitely tap into eBay though.!

I certainly do hope so!
I just wish we could get a full Sense 3.5 (or 4.0? ) when CyanogenMod 9 comes
That would be awesome! I guess right now the main thing to do is play the waiting game until progress pops up, if any. I believe something will happen for our device. We at least have some who are still bent on deving for the Espresso. Certainly greatful for that!
We have a bootable ics port so things are looking good.. but as I said this isn't pushing possibilities just keeping os up to date.. if your deving skills are any good I suggest downloading Daniels ics test in whoareyou's thread and working with that.

Never buying HTC ever again.
http://www.htc.com/www/help/android4faq/?cid=android4blog
thats a stupid move....on both the jetstream (which was very expensive) and the flyer (which was very popular after the price cut)
damn it.
at least we got an answer.
never touching HTC again after this.
Also, now is the time to put some money to our ICS bounty...since it is the last hope for this device.

Not to rain on our already rainy parade, but that's not much of a hope. With Honeycomb being closed source, and everything HTC (except the kernel) being closed source, there's pretty much zero chance this device will ever see ICS.
I love my One X, but I really wish I could go back in time and get a Galaxy Tab.
I am very dissapointed. I was bought my jetstream off contract from at&t last october 910usd include taxes and unlock. Very very expensive. And no update? HTC is a shame!!! Today I got my galaxy tab 2 p3100 which has 4.0.3 factory loaded. Great speed and usage. Dual core processor and lot of memory. And cost me 350usd factory unlocked. So thats what I call money steal.

But - for the right amount of money we just might be able to recruit a developer to release us from the htc choke hold.
And also, russ said he's working to get htc to cooperate with him on building a rom for us.here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1651651
There is still a tiny shred of hope.

why is honeycomb closed source? the source was released the same day ICS source was released. HTC sense for tablets i don't know about the source but for phones it is fairly open + its not like htc are done with tablets for good. when the next bunch come out im sure someone will port something over for you
wish the jetstream came to the UK but thats a long gone wish
I dont understand why HTC will not update the rom. I will be happy for honeycomb update too. Honeycomb 3.2 update and sense update will be greathful. Why want htc to kill this good tablet.

Jumping ship as they say...it's a shame and there will be a ripple effect.
From a hardware perspective it is still an incredible device. It is truly a shame that HTC has pulled the plug on it and is washing it's hands of what were very likely highly committed HTC users. It was a premium device with a premium price and devoted HTC fans were confident it was a worthy purchase. Although the device did not see extensive penetration, the customers the company will lose as a result (including myself) were valuable voices in the marketplace as champions of the company among other consumers. Though small, there will be a ripple effect. People look to their tech savvy friends and family members for buying advice and I am certainly sharing my experiences openly and honestly.
I have always previously trusted HTC to keep capable devices relevant. Unfortunately, the Jetstream's honeycomb software seemed like an interim OS until HTC had time to get 4.0 up and running. HTC Sense on the Jetstream experiences frequent reboots, the pen gets laggy, the stock notes app hangs up and fails to recognize pen movement at times and the device certainly does not run like it should with this hardware....the processor could still hang with the best of them if it was properly supported.
The HTC One X was going to be my next phone. I've been a fan of the company since it's Windows Mobile days. This experience both from a device standpoint under the current software and the lack of commitment from the company to adequately support the device moving forward (which in my humble opinion includes ICS support) has me waiting for the GS III or other flagship device. Jumping ship as they say.

wish you the best. I wished you could've held onto your flyer as well because I think you will miss out on the awesomeness of our beloved flyer once ICS or even Jellybean is fully functioning (which I feel will be very soon). Honestly I would have probably made the same move you did if I didn't use the pen as extensively as I do.
I wanted too hold on to it but I needed the money to afford the nexus. Also had to sell my PSP and zune, still $40 short on the charge. I really love the communities here and I wanted to see where chaos took Lisbon, but overall I the Flyer fell short of my expectations. Honestly I didn't get it because I was hoping for ICS, but I didn't realize how honeycomb sucked in General. Overall I am ultra picky about lag, a lot of average users would play with honeycomb and not see a reasons to complain, but I guess it comes from being a PC guy. My PC has either always had the hardware or I've tweaked whatever version of windows to keep it lag free.
But my flyer only sold for $125, not having a pen screwed me on price as most sold with the pen but at that price when I'm doing better financially I could buy another one easy I'll still be around here as threads show up in participated on tapatalk and I'd like to help out new users. But overall if you aren't happy with the flyer and you don't need the stuff your loosing, then sell it now before it depreciates more because this thing rocks. Ridiculously wicked fast and jelly bean is really cool . See I remember ripping on the fire for not having an SD and I planned on getting a 32 gig SD for my flyer but never got around to it and found I didn't need it. I got the 16 gig nexus because of game storage primarily. A rear camera never was important to me, and I have never used mhl, I got a ps3 and roku box networked to my PC for streaming purposes.
I also like how much easier this thing is to hold. The back is grippy and the weight is pretty light. My flyer I'd drop when trying to switch orientation all the time because the back was slippery and it was a bit heavy.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I hear a nexus 10 is in the works, but I dunno with the ipad still being the world's most popular tablet and the ipad 2 starting at $400 it seems like the 10 inch market is lost to apple unless they could hit the 300 mark or so.
I will say the Android tablet market really sucks right now because if you want the features the nexus doesn't provide then your at the mercy of a manufacturer that might keep your tablet updated might not. Honestly the update problem is more forgivable on a subsidized phone. No one holds on to their phones and if your phone gets cut off too soon, your probably only 3 months from your upgrade date anyway. The flyer will be my reason for only buying nexus products from now on. I bought the flyer and planned on keeping it several years, and if they would of just gave it ics, I could see that happening. The nexus has better hardware, but I bought it for the software, the flyer was plenty capable. Overall though htc in general has annoyed me, I never complained about poor support from Samsung with my captivate, even though I was on par with my HTC devices because it had an unlocked bootloader and updates didn't matter when you could root it and keep it up to date yourself. Chaos will make that happen with the Flyer but my phone is a lost cause. HTC put some code embedded in the device that prevents the RIL from working properly with att sims. And then this "relocked" rubbish you know I'm sorry but putting a custom rom on won't break my screen, power button, or speaker, and imo rooting shouldn't void your warranty unless they can prove you a change you made caused a power failure. When we bought our Dell laptop in 2009 it came with vista with a windows 7 upgrade available by mail when 7 launched. When I got it I put the 7 disk in, booted into it, upgraded from disc, and wiped my previous copy of windows. All bloat was removed, and I was pure windows 7 no bs. And it was still covered by warranty 100%! Imo putting a custom rom on is no different than reinstalling windows on putting Linux on your pc and doesn't warrant a warranty void. Ok stepping off my soap box now /rant

The Nexus 7 is great but I wish it was a higher end device with better build quality.
The software is amazing though. Everything is so fluid and smooth. Also, the amount of development is crazy when you consider that not much development is really needed! It is overkill.
I kept one of my two Flyers and still have high hopes that the dedicated devs here will get it all sorted. Chaosz-x and Dexter have come a long way and I am hoping that the UI flinging issues and video issues can get fixed.
All things considered, I don't think I'll buy a non-Nexus device again. This is a lesson learned the hard way from HTC.
Honestly the build quality is on the same level as the flyer. Don't let the screen separation issues scare you off, it affects less people than it looks. People get on message boards to ***** not to praise and mine seems flawless thus far. Screen is gorgeous too btw, I noticed the screen calibration issue but that's minor and Google is going to patch it at some point.
Also it's a lot lighter and easier to hold than the flyer which I like and its overall a good looking device. I don't quite get the Asus bashing, being a pc guy I've bought alot of Asus parts over the years, in fact my motherboard right now is an AsRock, a budget brand of Asus and you'd think it was a $200 board with the features and build quality

I'm with you on the non nexus thing. Speaking of which development is dead for cm10 on my vivid, ril issues they couldn't overcome. Htc makes their stuff too damn hard to hack, I don't know why they care. Imo recovery should be installed out of the box, s-rubbish should of never existed as with the concept of locked bootloaders, and rooting should be an option in recovery with a disclaimer. Shouldn't void your warranty unless you break something afterwards that's the result of something you could only do with root access imo. Why do these companies care anyway?

It might not be that easy for HTC to tell whether an issue (such as a brick) was caused by hardware, or something stupid the customer did. There are a bunch of people on the One X that are bricking their phones by flashing the ROMs for the wrong version of the One X (international Tegra3 ROMs on Snapdragon S4 devices) despite the forums being completely and deliberately separated, multiple warnings and threads instructing not to do it, etc.
Some of these guys have already said (or had it suggested by other unscrupulous members) they were going to try to return the phone for a free replacement, claiming a hardware defect. With behavior like this, its not hard to understand why HTC is locking bootloaders.
Question: Is it safe to do a "Factory Data Reset" on this tablet? This has been rooted and upgraded to 3.0 using Globatron's method.
I made the decision to sell this on eBay as well. Also, Cor, how much did you sell yours for?
I'm planning on selling mine with the pen, a portfolio case, and a Trident Aegis Case.

Should be. You just want to wipe our personal data from the phone? You can always wipe data from CWM, as well. That I know works.
Note that either way, it just wipes data and leaves whatever ROM was flashed on the tablet. The term "factory reset" is a bit of a misnomer. It implies to some people that the stock ROM will return, which is not the case.

I see where you are coming from as a basic consumer, but what these big companies want are corporate clients. While we don't care as much if our phone is secure, too a lot of these government contractors, and larger private business having secure phones is a big deals, since executives and the like will company proprietary information on them. All of a sudden S-ON and lack of root is important.
Dear friends,
I really wanted to. I had so much hope for this device, but I can no longer do it. I love aosp and absolutely loathe sense. That being said for some reason I love HTC. They make beautiful, sexy, durable, powerful and for the most part, reasonably priced. But it seems to me that the salad days are behind me. I've had the aria, hero, touch pro, evo, HD, inspire, incredible, vivid, one x, and lastly the x+. But my last few haven't impressed and so here we are. As of last night I sold my x+, hugged my pillow, and cried myself to sleep. The latest set back was finally just to much for me after a long series of disappointments on other devices. I am using the money to buy an N4 and most likely will stick with the flagship on down the line. I plan to start learning as much as possible to help solve issues like this in the future. I say good bye and thank you to a great community and impressive company for now, its been an awesome ride.
Greatest regards,

That's a sad thread... should probably be ranamed as a "Farewell Thread"
But there is no way of happiness here, really... I was always with HTC, comming from HTC Touch Dual which was fun these days. Then my favourite HTC HD2. I was really crying when I sold it a few month ago... but sh.. I sold it for 200 bucks, and that was a price in january this year. Now I got mine HTC One X+. No trouble with a device it works, it works good, but I had more fun with my HD2 than what I have now. Want to say thanks for every dev, every member and every noob in HTC Community. That was good times. But HTC is dissapointing me, dissapointing me so much, that all my hate for Samsung has gone now and I'm switching to S4 in some time. But untill that, my heart still belongs to HTC... don't know for how long.
Same here. I gave my daughter my hox+ and downgraded to her S2 just so I could run CM again. I'll keep the S2 until the Motorola Google X is released. I too plan to stay with Google's flagship device from now on (whoever makes it). Thanks for everyone's help with hox+ related issues and questions.

This reminds me of the farewell posts back in the Windows Mobile days. I got this phone in December, and it still has the stock ROM on it. None of the ROM's here really inspire me. This is coming from someone who went through the wire trick on the Sensation XE so I could load custom ROM's on it. Maybe I am just getting lazy, but looking for something different.
I'm curious as to what you think is wrong with the current AOSP roms for the One X+? Or is it because you have the AT&T version and don't have a stable AOSP rom yet (afaik)?

It's not that there's something wrong with them, how would I know as I've not even flashed one, right? I used to love flashing ROMs, but now I guess I don't find it all that exciting anymore. I am on the International version of the HOX+ so which ROM would you recommend?

Dear friends,
I really wanted to. I had so much hope for this device, but I can no longer do it. I love aosp and absolutely loathe sense.

There will be CM for AT&T sooner than later though right? If sense is your only issue may as well stick it out
Patience doesn't hurt much. I've got plenty of other things to keep my attention, and I still have my Inspire to play with AOSP for now. Lloir has put a lot into this device so far, and even if not at full capacity he's said he plans to keep it going. Some calls for assistance have been sent out to other devs as well, I hear. And some of the names I've heard mention of are quite talented.
It's just a matter of time, and I think this device will be pretty great once it's got some AOSP love in it. I've had the device since November, and running Elegancia with the Nova launcher it's already quite good. I don't like sense as much as AOSP but Elegancia has been great so far. Great ROM, great dev. Besides I can't go saying there isn't enough dev work going into the device if I haven't taken the time to learn to dev myself.
Stock Sense 4 is well done imho. I was also a flashaholic on previous Android builds but now I am not completely, but pretty satisfied with the stock version that is on the device. Maybe it is because JB is more primetime than any other Android build of past?
I'm too leaving HTC after being an HTC fan for a long time... HTC is focusing and spending a lot of time on locking down their devices than actually releasing software updates.. They could've spent this time on finding a way to make their devices brick proof rather than locking it down. Their idea of updating software is releasing a new phone just like they did with the HOX and HOX+..
HTC one looks like a great device, however why the release it with android 4.1.2??? So they can release HTC one+ a few months later with android 4.2.2??
I used to hate Samsung as they make plastic and cheap looking devices but I've come to respect them as they don't abandon their devices and kept supporting them to the last minute... S3 is getting 4.2.2 soon while HOX+ still stuck at 4.1.1!! Samsung s2 is getting jelly bean!! While desire Hd didn't get ics!
I'm joining the boat and ditching HTC for good

for what it's worth, S3 has been out for a lot longer. HOX+ is still pretty young. and lack of updates has more to do with lazy carriers than manufacturers typically. But I mean, go wherever you're happy going.
interesting to hear people willing to leave htc products behind, I've come from a long line of samsung phones when I jumped ship back in the desireHD days. Having tried the sony xperia z for a couple of weeks I was glad to be offered the one+ in exchange. I've missed the htc build quality

I think the hox+ is suffering from a timing issue. All of the devs upgraded to the hox after the desireHD/inspire and then htc released the + too soon. Bring on the Motorola X.

So many great comments here. I'm on the verge of jumping ship to the new S4. As you can see from my sig, I've been exclusively with HTC for some time now, and I realllly like the x+. It's really a sleek and beautiful phone, I hate using a case but its cheap insurance. Also, for once I really don't mind the stock ROM, just had to flash the available mods and now I'm content. HTC has always treated me well, sending me new batteries and chargers even out of warranty without giving me a hard time. But alas, this dropping new and better phones every few months is really annoying. Its like they purposly hold back so they can realse something "better". If they were smart they would've made s-off easier, gave it 2gigs, and put efforts into upgrading to 4.2.2 and make the hox+ the flagship for about a year. After reading the specs of the next ONE, I'm not impressed at all, its a downgrade in memory and camera. WHY? This day in age 64gigs or an SD slot on a high end device should be the standard, and even if the 4 megapixel camera is better IRL, on paper it sounds like poop. Honestly though I can't see the camera being any better, especially if you installed the 4.2 camera app from the mod section. This phones cameras is as good or better then my Kodak 18magepix point and shoot. HTC, quit playing games. Make one kick #$% phone, upgrade it when needed, and let it rock out for about a year, stop holing back so you can realse something "better" two months later.

All carriers lock down their devices, HTC unlocks bootloaders like other OEM's via a site, what else do u need to customize your device? S-off? Unneeded.
S2 is only getting in release cos it sold a boat load of phones so of course sammy will update it to keep the peace, sensation got nowhere near the sales to warrent it in all honesty.
Sammy also doesn't update its tablets or non flagship devices, they rarely if any see updates to next android versions.
The sg4 also won't be getting official AOSP according to cyanogen mod devs as Sammy never outs the source code for yrs. Sg3 was lucky to get support.
The official news is that all current HTC devices including HOS will be getting sense 5 which will be 4.2.2 on release, at which point ill be using Aokp klp on my HOX+.

I'm not talking about carriers as I always buy international unlocked phones.. s-off is really need to be able to flash from within the device and don't have to use a pc to do so. so bootloader unlock still a limited way to open up the device.
the sensation didn't do well because it had many problems and i have owned one before and hated it .. HTC tried to fix it by releasing the XL and still the same...
HTC has said that it will release sense 5 alone with 4.2.2 but let's be honest the release of the update will take ages to see the light, because HTC ONE has android 4.1.2 so other devices won't see any updates till HTC ONE gets 4.2.2 and then maybe after a few months they will release it.. and I won't be too surprised if HTC releases HTC ONE+ to fix issues on the original one and introduce new issues as well.
i just bought Galaxy Note 10.1 and in a matter of months it got jelly bean 4.1.1 and then 4.1.2 .. also tab2 10.1 got 4.1.2 and tab2 7" got 4.1.1 ..
regarding the S4, some developers said that they might not support it but not the CM team..
It's a joke that the HTC One will be shipped with 4.1.2. Key lime pie is knocking at the door in 1 month and then 4.1.2 is so outdated. If Samsung can ship their GS4 with 4.2.2 then HTC should be able too. But I guess sense 5 is a mess and will be slowing down all updates of the Android OS. Never buy a phone with an outdated software; it will slow down the update process even more. OEMs normally don't skip OS versions. So until the HTC One will get KLP it will be next year or more typical for HTC they will release a hardware refresh in 5 months that ships with KLP. No HTC for me anymore.
This is my first smartphone (been lurking for too long) and honestly, even though there isn't a complete AOSP for AT&T yet, I'm really impressed by everyone's hard work for HOX+. I know there's a lot that can be done with the phone that I have-- and, uh, I'll probably also switch to flagship after this, I just really wanted the internal storage-- but I'm satisfied now.
I guess it's different for people who have tasted the fruit of knowledge already, though, and I can't wait to do that too
