[Q] constant data connection - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am a new HD2 user just got the phone three days ago, and was wondering if there was a way to get the data connection to stop or suspend after a certain amount of time, it tears up my battery life and i dont want to keep manually turning off the data connection...any suggestions? thanks in advance

theuseoforce do you have sense enable?

yes i do have sense enabled

Under Weather Tab, check and Press- Menu,Settings then uncheck Download Data Automatically. Hope that works.

Semi better
ok, i have disabled all auto downloads i can find, and i installed bandswitch 2.9, it locked up my hd2 and was forced to restart and uninstall the program. now my data connection stays on but it will disconnect itself after a few mins. Not sure if this is a due to some registry entries that were left behind or not, any suggestions...otherwise ill just take it as a good sign and leave it be and be happy

I remember using custom rom on my hd2 which had a widget of mobile data- just turn it off and no automatic data connections, only my own enterinygs to internet when i turn this widget on.

Non-sense toggle data widget

Does anyone know if there is a widget comparable to the sense "mobile" widget, that will turn mobile data on/off, and works with the Eris? I've tried toggle data widget and switchpro and neither of them work. Thanks!

I used to be looking out for one, but I found out I always had one!
I assume your on a vanilla rom and dont have sense? use the control panel. there's a button with a circle and 2 arrows on it.
now this doesn't actually turn off 3g, it turns off active syncing. active syncing is what drains your battery when you aren't touching your phone. so if you turn it of, it will be exactly like if you turned 3G off all together. but! doing it this way, you can open up the browser, and it will still automatically load.
like, if you turn it off, your phone wont be using 3g to constantly check on your new emails, but if you went to the mail application and hit refresh it will bring in the new emails for you.
Thanks, actually I'm trying to convince myself I could use a non-sense ROM. There are many things that I love about sense and the mobile widget is one of them.
I'm on pageplus and only have 50mb of data, so I like to keep the mobile connection off unless I need it for some reason. One time I was listening to pandora over wifi and all the sudden my data usage was maxed out. I believe the wifi radio was turned off after 15 minutes because of one of the phones settings (I've since changed that setting and haven't seen this problem). Needless to say, since then, I've been paranoid.
The suggestion to disable syncing will help but I would prefer to cut the connection completely. That way, any app that might happen to be running in the background (That I no longer need) won't be able to suck away at my limited data. Or, if wifi get's turned off automatically for some reason
Are there any other suggestions?

would that work ?
Thanks rv, I've actually tried that one and it doesn't appear to work on the Eris. Other people have reported the same in the reviews.

I am on page plus also, and i faced the exact same dilemma trying a non-sense rom. I couldn't find anything reliable. I know its not as convenient but what about just pushing the power button for 2 secs and then selecting turn on/off mobile network from that list. I have to do this in sense sometimes because the mobile widget doesn't work occasionally.
For those that are using roms that still have HTC Framework, then a shortcut is to long press the end call button and select the last option. Which is Mobile Network ON/OFF
Atleast that's a workaround but not a complete widget replacement, sorry
Check out beautiful widgets, it's 1.99 but it might have what you need.

u should try droidwall. am on pageplus too and use this one to control the data usage. u can block some or all apps from using 3G and restrict them to just wifi. its free. try it out

Yeah that will work fine, I never noticed that was there... but do the AOSP/Cyanogen builds have this option?

I actually have beautiful widgets, but there isn't one to turn off data.
Just to post an update for anyone interested:
SwitchPro widget works great at least on White Widow. I'm assuming it works on any AOSP ROM. I tried it with a stock sense rom previously and it didn't work for me, so I'm assuming that it doesn't work with sense.

[Q] Which (sync?) app is eating GPRS? And how do I stop it?

Hi hope someone can help.
I've bought an Xperian X10 mini for my daughter. She loves it. All her friends love it. The iPhone owners want one! (Big) but.....
She is not a heavy user, and so put her on a PAYG contract. However it is running out of credit very quickly, and when I checked the usage it is nothing she is doing, but some background app that is regularly (hourly) connecting with GPRS and doing... well something, but I have no idea what :-S The info on the usage (from Orange) is (e.g.)
date & time event type dialled number/description duration/vol(Kb) cost (?)
22/05/11 19:22 GPRS ap-prepaidsessio 38.0 0.00
with the same entry every hour:22
We have tried disabling as many sync type options / apps as we can find (e.g. Timescape) but it is still happening, and is driving me up the wall.
The reason I am even more annoyed is that most of the time it is at home, and connected (apparently successfully) to our wifi, so why the hell is it using GPRS anyway when there is an active wifi conection?! :-S
I have tried everything I can think of, and short of turning it off there seems little I can do. Can anyone help please??
- Which app is doing this?
- How do I configure it to either
i) use Wifi (preferred - would rather not disable functionality if possible) or
ii) stop auto syncing every hour?
Any help very gratefully received!
Thanks in advance
T
There are a couple of apps out there that can monitor data usage per app. But so far, all those that I found require Froyo (2.2) and above. I'm guessing your using the stock SE ROM so that's 2.1.
But there is an alternative.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Click Usage Statistics
Click Battery history
Click the Other usage dropdown
Click network usage
That should show you which apps are using your network connection. But both wifi and 3g; at least it gives you an idea.
As to how to prevent use, you could go to each app and customize syncing options if at all possible. If you just want to block an app from using the network totally, I suggest LBE Privacy Guard, free on the market.

They have a thread here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091065
EDIT: BTW, the phone shouldn't be using GPRS when wifi is available. That's weird. First time I've heard of that happening.
Many thanks for the info - really useful - will check the links you've given.
On the wifi (and yes it is weird - and annoying!) could it be "connected" but without a "proper" connection? Is there some way I can check, e.g. switch off GPRS and see if can see www?
Just tried what you suggested (disconnected the internet from my wifi router, but router still on), and my X10MP didn't even attempt to connect to GPRS despite using apps which use data. The apps returned errors.
Maybe your X10M fails to connect to the wifi? I actually have no idea what's going on.
you and me both buddy!
thanks for trying tho!
I'll delete the connection anyway and try set it up again....

I didn't need to enable anything to use that. Sorry, don't know how else to help.
well it carried on despite various fiddling. so I did a factory reset.... no accounts set up no sync etc - factory reset - and it's still happening??!! so something SE/Android is doing it, but I still have no idea what? Surely I'm not the only person with this issue??!! :S :S :S

very simple fix, go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > uncheck Data enabled.
that way mobile data (gprs,edge,3g) is turned off and your problem is solved. If you're using stock SE software, theres a Data Traffic widget that lets you toggle the Data Enabled setting on and off easily.
Sync is not the only thing using data traffic, background apps can too, as well as some of the apps she might be using. ( some apps have adverts )
Thanks. Had also been nosing on SE site, and am obviously not the only person with this problem. I unchecked the box a few hours ago, am hoping that that cures it. I've also found anotehr PAYG plan with the same provider that has unlimited internet, so may switch to that. So one way or another will be resolved.
However I am still left annoyed. This ****** device is supposed to be under MY contorl not the other way round! Not knowing what is doing this, or (and because of this) not being able to stop it is ****** annoying! As is the fact it (whatever "it" or "they" are) is using GPRS when there is an open wifi connection!!
Ho hum - progress eh...
Well turning off the Data seems to have done the trick thanks. NOt really satisfactory not knowing what is doing it, but there we go. Thanks for all the help all
If shes not using the data at all, you can try to delete all access points - GPRS,WAP, etc. even MMS...with no APN, no connection, no access to net, no credit loss...Just go to settings-wireless networks-mobile networks-access point names-click on any of them-press menu button and choose delete...Im working for the operator so I solve this kind of problems every day :-D It is easy if you dont want to use net in mobile at all but still I think you should flash it with SEUS because your problem is weird.
That's the thing - she does use data. so want it to be enabled. but the vast majority of the time is at home with a perfectly good wifi connection, so why won't it use that?!
Anyway am swapping to a PAYG tarriff promising "free" internet, so will see how that goes.
thanks t

No data connections except for wifi please help

This Galaxy Note is my first Android device ever. I have rooted it and was downloading some apps. Basically following a post of the most important apps to have once rooted. I downloaded Juice Defender and enabled it inside the app on the recommended setting for new users. All the other apps downloaded I have not messed with anything that would alter any part of the phone itself. I wanted to start at a better battery. Now when I leave home and do not have a wifi connection my phone says that the data network is disconnected. I tried to disable JD which did not fix the issure, and then I uninstalled it and rebooted. Still same problem. I'm so new to this I don't know what you might need to know to help me get my old data values back in place from what JD altered. So Please help me get my now useless phone back up and running. Also, please be patient with me and what I'm sure are stupid questions regarding this issue. I'm just trying to learn here.
Thanks,
Open Settings -> Wireless and Network -> Mobile Networks.
Check to make sure 'Use packet data' is on.
If so, open 'Access Point Names', AT&T PTA should be selected.
Make sure that you contact AT&T and have your phone set on their network. It is an LTE phone and it needs a specific data package.

That is exactly why I aborted Juice Defender. Try Greenpower, https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsIm9yZy5ncG8uZ3JlZW5wb3dlciJd.
I was having problems with JD as well. My data icons and bars would show but I would have no cellular data. I uninstalled and everything worked fine after. It's weird because I had no cellular data problems with JD on my Inspire.
Anyways I find that you don't really need JD if you're using an app like setcpu or system tuner which puts the phone into deep sleep when not in use.
u can try all those there good tools..check data enable if its on and still no connection .pull sim out and power on without it....turn phone off put sim back in power on to trick the system..reboot ..and see if that works..just make sure u have data enabled first and data on.....before doing this...hope it helps

or wipe cache in recovery and give a reboot..that might work as well...or davlik cache.the reboot...it has to reconnect if u uninstalled it

3G re-enables itself on Jellybean

I've tried several Jellybean builds (CheckROM, Wanamlite, Omega) and have the same problem with all of them. Whenever I turn off 3G data it re-enables itself within a few minutes. Has anyone else had this problem with JB?
Most likely it is a problem with some of the installed by you soft wghich tires to connect to network.

What's the best of identifying which app might be causing it??
If your phone is rooted, it is simple: install DroidWall from market
I'm running Omega v31 since Indie released it. No problem so far.. Same when I was on CheckROM before.
Did you do a full wipe before installing the ROMs?

Yes I did a wipe/delete cache/delete Dalvik cache before installing each ROM.
I installed Droidwall and denied 3G access to ALL apps, but still something is switching on my data service within an hour of me disabling it.
???
I never met the app which turned firewall of by itself....
Last resort: install Titanium Backup, and by freezing one by one check which one causes this.
Must it be an app that's trying to access 3G, or is the o/s enabling 3G for some reason??
If you have set software check, it may, but I doubt it.
From system apps - I'd look into news daemon, stock daemon, account sync, weather update and similar.
Surely the question isn't which app is attempting to use 3G, but why it is able to turn 3G on when I've explicitly disabled it? If I turn 3G off should it prevent any app from using it??
Usually no, BUT:
- some apps can have root access;
- some apps can have "strange" permissions, especially if taken from... not 100% trustworthy source.
One more what can help to diagnose: Permissions Denied from Play, can verify app-by-app which one will have permission to access network.
Personally, what I'd do:
- install Titanium Backup;
- backup all apps;
- freeze system apps (Stock Daemon, news daemon, FB, YT, SamsungUNA, push etc)
- look if the situation persists, if not - I'd try to unfreeze sys apps one by one, and then restore my apps.
I'm using Onavo Count to monitor for data usage and it's showing that only "Google Services" and "Google Account Manager" have used any data since the last reboot. Since both of those are pretty central to the Android experience I'm now stumped. I can't disable them, but why/how are they overriding my settings and starting up 3G when I've explicitly chosen to disable it??
Hmmm... by the accident - do you have auto sync left in the settings?

Sync is switched on for Gmail only, but even this shouldn't be able to enable 3G when I've turned off 3G???
Same problem...
I have the same problem, since I updated to jellybean - the mobile data just switches itself back on even though I have manually disabled it.
I have the stock software, sorry, haven't had the guts to flash it yet
Anybody find an answer?
Thanks in advance

Have you checked in Settings>Data Usage>Mobile Data was unchecked after switch off the mobile data from notification? It could be either that or auto sync that force mobile data to switch on. Try to turn off mobile data and turn on auto sync, then see in an hour if there's any effect.
Because if stock (non-rooted) also have same problem, it should be something in the settings..
Anyway, mine doesn't have any problem like this..
try this
u may try this ....like press *#*#4636#*#* and the goto phone information the select the type of network u want..
btw this works for many of the devices....on any version of android

Phone disconnects from Wi-Fi in sleep mode

Greetings. I have a problem with my phone and Wi-Fi connection.
My phone is a Sony Xperia J running stock Android 4.1.2. When I leave it for a while in sleep mode, whether charging or not, it disconnects from my Wi-Fi connection and uses my phone's data, draining my data plan.
I need your help concerning this issue. Here are some of my phone's related settings:
Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep: Always.
Avoid poor connections: Unchecked.
Extended Standby Mode: Unchecked.
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE: Since then I've disabled my data plan so I can check if my phone is properly connecting to my Wi-Fi or not. It seems that yesterday I had no problem, but today I'm experiencing it. I don't know what should I do. :crying:

If yes uninstall it.

Also make sure that you don't have the battery saver mode on or another app that tries to save battery because they will often interfere and disable that for you as well.

Only other setting I can think of that controls that is in Developer Options. There's one that's aggressive hand off from wifi to cellular data and one for keep data on at all times. If you haven't enabled Developer Options yet then forget I mentioned it as it'll not be on by default.

I have Developer Options enabled and I don't see any of these options there.
Anyway, I think I have found the cause of the problem (a conflicting application, I just did a clean reinstall of it) and so far I'm good, if the problem persists I'll post again.
Thank you everyone who participated in this thread.
Glad to hear that it seems you found the cause. Please let us know what app in case someone else has the same issue and stumbles across your post.
Well, it was WhatsApp. Apparently I had a duplicate APK in my SD card (I use Link2SD) from before the factory reset. I say it was a duplicate because I unlinked WhatsApp from the SD card, but when I uninstalled it it said it was removing it from the SD card.
Thanks again!
