[KERNEL][3.28.2011] EC10 Source Built ComaVolt TouchWiz UPDATED 4/11 - Fascinate Android Development

Hey guys! I'm back to 'redeem' myself from the last troll post I made.
I can assure you guys this is NOT a troll post. This is a legit kernel.
This is built from jt1134's git tree here:
https://github.com/jt1134/linux-2.6-fascinate/commits/froyo/
with his original post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010102
Credit goes to:
jt1134 for all his hardwork with modifying the Mesmerize kernel source to work with our phones, also his work with merging all of the voodoo enhancements.
adrynalyne for his undervolt settings which i took from his git from his eclair kernels.
SirGatez for all of his hardwork with the kernel source code and general awesomeness.
and many many more.
Well here it is people, the EC10 source built kernels with comavolt voltage settings.
Voodoo:
http://db.tt/CaJmXvi
http://db.tt/nA9Lgm8 - Edify version
NonVoodoo:
http://db.tt/l0LPzy7
http://db.tt/Ft2ShnY - Edify version
*MIRRORS* Thanks to Danknub!!
Voodoo:
Coming Soon
NonVoodoo:
Coming Soon
Hope they work as they're supposed to. As I said, the only thing I changed was the voltage settings, So they should work just as the latest kernel jt1134 has released.
**************************************************
Update 3-30:
Recompiled with jt1134's latest commits.
Added a 2nd stock volted recovery kernel for those having issues in userland.
Update 4-3:
Still same kernel as last time.
Reverted from seperate kernel system/recovery to single kernel. Flashes system only to preserve recovery since nonvoodoo users reported having stock recovery post flash.
Update 4-8:
Same source as 4-3 only change is oem battery check.
Patched to allow non stock batteries.
Update #2 4-8:
Recompiled with jt's latest commits
oem battery check still patched out.
Update 4-11
Recomipled with jt's latest commits
Recovery should be fixed due to missing scripts which jt readded. (nandroid md5, fix_permissions, etc.)
Also edited defconfig to readd ipv6 support that jt removed hopefully restoring the ability to use google goggles
Update #2 4-11
Added Edify versions for those using CWM3.x
**************************************************
Will update to jt's latest commits when I get a chance.
Enjoy!!

Hey! No, it doesn't this is a TouchWiz kernel.
Thanks for pointing that out though! Good catch.

What is the voltage on this compared to the other two?

Those are the voltage settings that adrynalyne used for his eclair kernels.

Thanks so much for this. I'm going to give this a try today and see how it works as far as battery goes.

So are these oc'd kernels?

No. it's a more aggressively under volted kernel. Basically its supposed to give the same cpu performance but use less power and thus give longer battery life.

No snapshots of crazy quadrants this time? Well then im not interested.... Seriously though looking forward to trying this out later today

Does this contain all of the goodies in the other kernel? (vodoo sound/color/optimizations?)

Epic failure with my phone. This same thing happened yesterday with the other EC10 undervolted kernels. I install it and it runs great for a while. Then my phone freezes and the only way to get it to turn off is by pulling the battery. I've tryed downloading several different times and copying and installing several different time to no avail.
I'm running EB01 with a stock EC10 Kernel with no issue's. I guess i'll have to keep it that way for now.

Quit Crying. He did what he did to prove a point. It was a valid point; many people just flashed it and didn't even read through the post or reply's. He made his point, and it was proven true and scary. Its not like his little "prank" caused you any harm, it didn't break your phone. So stop crying, man up and look at yourself as the "douche" for just DLing something because hes a trusted dev.
I'm curious to see what would happen if some hacker or what not got on a reputable dev's acct and posted a complete catastrophe of a ROM; then everyone would be screwed and wished a prank like this was done to remind us to be careful.
Again, quit crying;man up. You downloaded it, not him.

It wasn't a prank to "prove" a point that people just download anything these days. The prank was because several of these guys are in full belief that I'm stealing their work and not crediting it in my threads, which is obvious that I do. The prank was for me.
And yes, this guy is a douche for doing that when he could've, along with many other people, confronted me via private message. But no, that was too easy for them. He had to take the double edged sword way out by making himself look like an ass as well as trying his hardest to make me look like one.
It's funny that when you expect to come to a place with "older" people that you still find that small group of people that are 18-21 years old that are internet pirates and they can't help but be immature about everything.

The prank wasn't target at you. It was targeted at the entire subforum. So get off your high horse thinking everything is about you, and if you aren't going to download my kernel and comment on it's performance and instead thread stalk me, you are more than welcome to NOT post on my threads OR use the things I provide.
Have a nice day.

It was obviously targeted at me. Don't even deny that. You stole my pictures and a number of other things then repackaged all of it in a rom. I'm not going to download your kernel because for all I know it could have naked pictures of dudes that your childish self put in there. I am welcoming myself to posting in your threads since you made an entire thread mocking my past releases. Before you screw with other people next time, think about how they can come back and completely ruin your future threads. Have fun.

And seriously what is posting in his thread now accomplishing? Forcing a mod to come in here and clean-up the thread once it gets derailed? Making people think that you are childish too?
If you have something to say about the whole situation why not take the high road? You are obviously stating and implying that you think he took the low road so aren't you no better than your characterization of times_infinity if you do the same thing? Make your own post, tell your side of the story and clear up the things you think need to be said. You will look better, feel better, and this thread won't become a cluster **** for people that actually want to use it.

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone has thought about posting a poll for the most popular Eris roms..or is that just not cool/not needed/uninteresting/stop asking stupid questions you stupid newb?
Or maybe it's a good idea..and now I can't edit the poll to add that as an option..

Thanks for the suggestion..that one seems to be a really popular one, I starting to lean that way as my starting point..
Best Eris Rom ?
I agree that it really depends on personal opinon.
As I haven't tried very many ROM's, actually only 2 , I have researched this quite extensively and the 2 I have tried and like verrrry much are:
KaosFroyo - I was running v37, but v38 just came out an hour ago
NonsensikalFroyo - I have run 9.5 & 10.1 Black & Blue but im flashing 10.8.1 B&B now
.... both have released updates within the last 24-48 hours.
I havent tried TazzFroyo but I would make that these the top 3 to try first !
Nonsensikal is a Cyanogen Mod build, Kaos is a CM/AOSP build
I hope this helps you narrow things. Happy flashing
Awesome!! Thanks so much! I'm probably going to flash KaosFroyo first since so many have suggested it..
Thanks again!
I just went to kaosfroyo v38. Its sick but celbfroyo is good cause its faster

celbfroyo is faster eh? Are you overclocking on the KFv38? Is it noticeably laggy?

I second that notion. Also I dont keep up with whats happenning with these roms and just check back here around once a month. It would be really cool if there were constantly new polls that would allow people like me to see what is popular at that point in time to give us a reference point of what to check out.
Thanks for the +1..maybe I just need to start a real one and people will jump on board.
I don't know what overclocking is. I have tazzfroyo now an its faster than v38
Sent from my Vanilla Tazz using XDA App
Overclocking allows you to run the processor at higher than stock speeds. I think most people are running it at around 750mhz where the stock speed is 528mhz.
Basically you can unlock a lot of hidden speed by overclocking at the sacrifice of some battery life.
Your rom may already have an overclocking app installed..do a search for it if your interested, I know I am
It would be a lot of bias. People get attached to roms and their developers so yeah. And different phones will behave differently with different roms.

People really need to read the rules before posting like you're supposed to. This has nothing to do with development, and doesn't belong here. Keep these questions in Q&A or General. THIS is why the devs don't like XDA.

FWIW, it seems to happen to everyone at some point.
Now, back to the original Q, I'm currently using Adryn's EC01 (Rom + Radio) and it seems to be working well. I HAD been using the DL09 modem for the last few weeks b/c of reception quality, but I decided to go for it and upgrade to EC01
I'm getting pretty good battery life and even better reception than before, but I liked the dark black theme of SC 2.9.2.
I'd say you should give ec01 a shot.
Be ye forewarned though: First boot, mine asked if I wanted to do a VZW over-the-air update. probably not a great idea. lol.
We should enforce some sort of temporary ban on these idiots. Follow the damn rules.

After nitsuj17 informed him that this is in the wrong section, is it really necessary for ten other people to point it out?
I'm running SC 2.9.2 with the EC01 radio and jt's EB01 kernel (non-voodoo) and my phone is working like a champ. Excellent reception, instant GPS lock, nice theme, and great battery life. I'm waiting to see what this "community project" is before I switch roms again.

Hopefully not. It makes it easier for CM devs to work out the bugs and kinks when they don't have a bunch of other kernels out there. I know they've requested devs on other phones to hold off on kernels. Wouldn't surprise me if they did the same here.

No respectable kernel offers OC over 1.6
The only person who claims OC higher than 1.6 is Mr. "snake oil" Tegrak, and he's too busy violating the GPL to back up his claims.
Nearly everything in my kernel was pulled from the CM7 source base, and I have provided atinm with patches for any significant modification/bugfix. If you could flash my kernel on CM7 you would see little to no difference.
The device has only been pulled from shelves in LTE markets where AT&T is aggressively marketing LTE devices with availability shenanigans and extra discounts to drive adoption - most of these markets are ones where stores didn't stock the I777 in the first place.
CM7 developers make the same request on ANY phone that has an official CM7 port. It's the CM7 way.

Everyone

Hello, everyone
What is it that you expect from a kernel developer? Also, do any of you run gingerbread as of the moment? I only ask because I am trying to take on the task of being a new contributor to this site. I want to contribute by giving you folks kernels. I'm nowhere near done. I am learning, but I feel like I should ask this now. To reiterate, I'm a noob trying to learn, and I’m curious as to what you guys want/see.
i simply want to know what you folks see in a kernel developer, and what you expect from one. While I am typing this, I am fairly nervous of the future responses. I already understand that I violated the rules of XDA by posting this question in general. I am willing to suffer the consequences for my actions as well.
I am simply curious at what you guys think.

Wow, I think its great what you're doing. Thanks.
I'm still running GB because everything works. I guess that's what I'd want in a kernel. A kernel that will run ICS where everything works including all 3D.
Your avatar is cool.
I think it's awesome that you're stepping up to the plate, I think you should make one to your liking 1st & then branch out from there.
If I could muster up the free time to study, I'd like to do the same.

Just be careful if you make something truly amazing.....
Just saying...
I'd say make stuff for you and not what other people want. If YOU want a specific feature put it in there.
The problem with making it with what other people want, is their is essentially less motivation to do it, the works harder, and you get regular users complaining about your work because it's not how "they" want it.
Enjoy your learning man!

What chad did was this: he made a kernel the way HE wanted it. He shared it with a few others, who about 1 month later pushed him to post on xda.
Bottom line: make it the way YOU want it
I think most people are concerned with battery life and performance. But...like everyone said, make it how you want it. What do you want most out of your phone?

So far only two kernel's have impressed me the most.....RCMix kernels (from the desire HD days) and anthrax kernel on the 3D, nothing else has even come close to those two in my opinion.
That's what -I- expect from a kernel.....
what you give will benefit the community surely, so don't let individuals dictate development.....the developers should do that, because at the end of the day....after the dust settles and all is done, it will be the same as what we all want (apart from things like usb host), so welcome and if anybody gives you a hard time, just stick the treasured two finger salute
since you asked... stability. no bs that makes your phone a million times faster or adds couple megapixels to your cam while at the same time adding features that don't even work on most roms.
personally just a kernel that focuses on battery that will be awesome.

The order is important.

hahahaha my psychic powers right there =P, now you're already my fav kernel dev on xda before you do anything =P
they were brilliant on RCmix ROMs and ARHD ROMs
IMO
You won't make everyone happy as the little bugs that make something work for one phone, but, borked for another.
Secondly, I prefer ICS over GB. Just preference.
However, you asked, and this is what I like:
1) Stability
2) Performance in the area of smooth graphics (choppiness sucks)
3) Battery tweaks
4) Something for GSM and CDMA users.
In that order. I don't overclock simply because it's not really needed. I run a stock speed and have smoother graphics with the LeeDroid tweaks on Booster Shot ICS than I did with LeeDroid tweaks on any overclocked GB ROM I ran. Why go 100 mph when going 70 gets you to the same destination and in roughly the same amount of time and using less gas?
I would like to tell you something like this:
1. All things working
2. Great battery life
3. Smooth and fast
4. Compatible with both gsm and cdma..
Does it look like too much request?

The short story ...
This is, for all intents and purposes, Franco Kernel. However, I have worked to cherry-pick commits
from the nightlies branch and apply them to the staging branch. I feel some great commits were lost
in the rebase and since I can't find the specific commits that make it great, I decided to just
carry on, adding commits from the nightlies branch to staging.
The long story ...
On March 19, 2014 Francisco Franco decided to rebase his kernel which is currently the nightlies
branch. To my understanding the reason was that users were complaining of various bugs, glitches,
etc. He had applied many CAF commits and was unable to determine where things were going wrong.
He was faced with a decision, find the problem or rebase? He chose to rebase. Since then, the
kernel has continued to get better and better!
"Then why are you using the staging branch?" you might be asking. Well, I was never plagued by
the problems other complained about and was really happy with r35. In fact, there is a little
nugget of gold with great value to me, hiding away in this branch! Let me explain.
On r35, when playing audio through PowerAmp, the CPU stays steady at 300mhz. Also, the way the
kernel selects which speed to run at seems to be more consistent. Apps, such as audio/video players,
seem to maintain a steady speed. Since r36 this has not been the case, audio/media players will
ramp up to 1GHz+ for no apparent reason. I was able to isolate one commit that as been applied to
the nightlies branch but the ramping up still continues.
This brings me to the nugget of gold! I have been able to determine there are about 1100 commits in
the staging branch that have not made it into the nightlies branch. The odds of finding the one or
two commits that reduce the ramping up are pretty slim. Believe me, I have tried.
Therefore, I have decided to re-animate the staging branch and work to bring commits from nightlies.
What is different?
The biggest difference is it is based on the "staging" branch
I've added 96Mhz, 192Mhz and 249Mhz CPU speeds.
Compiled with Linaro 4.8 (2014.03)
There will be no test builds, only releases that coincide with Franco Kernel.
The version will have a trailing a, b, c, etc. Each letter represents a build that has had past commits merged within that release. For example, the current version is r55a. Presently, there are about 120 commits from nightlies that I have to go through. If I merge some old commits before r56, the kernel will be released as r55b, r55c, etc.
What is the same?
many hundreds of commmits from the “nightlies” branch
initramfs files
Default FKU settings (see Notes)
Notes...
1. The FKU settings I change on my device are as follows... updated 06/30/2014
1a. If you are using a build named Re-animator-t** I suggest only changing the Minimum Frequency to 96000 and let me know how battery life is.
Minimum CPU frequency 96MHz
go_highspeed_load 95
highspeed_freq 192000
input_boost_freq 1036800
sync_freq 96000
target_loads 85 96000:90 192000:95 300000:98 600000:99
up_threshold_any_cpu_freq 300000
cpufreq_unplug_limit 1800000
2. For a long time I used PowerAmp, however I have recently switched to Rocket Music Player. Which you use is up to you but I believe RMP has a slightly less demanding UI.
3. At one point I suggested using Powersave governor to maximize battery. However, I think it does more harm than good, and has been removed.
4. I accept "Thanks" as payment.
5. Any monetary donations should be sent to Francisco Franco.

Cool! I'll keep watching this thread.
Good to see developers actually looking at the code and explaining things to us users.
Keep up, I'm gonna try this.
This is AOSP kernel right?
Thanks

It literally just came out, battery is probably similar to Franco's, and yes it's an AOSP kernel...
The name alone intrigued me as a huge horror fan. The write-up sold me, going to flash it right now. Thanks!

As I said in the OP, for all intents and purposes, this is Francisco Franco's Kernel. The difference is that it is not rebased. This is the staging branch of his git with most commits from his nightlies branch applied to it.

It will definitely get better battery life in some situations, specifically audio, which is what I use my device mainly for. For example, last night, on airplane mode, min cpu at 96mhz and governor set to powersave, I lost only 13% battery after 7.5 hrs of audio playback.
and does this work on mahdi rom ?

If a rom works with Franco's Kernel, then it should most likely work with this one.

i know, thats what i dont wanna use/download.. but did anyways
i like to do all my flashing in recovery all at one go.. i dont like the thought of, "downloading/updating a new rom via recovery, boot up, then have to use/download flashify just to 'finish' the procedure".. Lazy? maybe.. but doing everything all at once is better, and better for my ocd.. dont like back tracking things if that makes any sense ha -- makes sense in my head
EDIT: LOL  I just downloaded franco kernel .zip (since thats where it come from) and just replaced his boot img with Dr. West's (OP's) img... Flashed it via recovery, and booted up fine :good:

I personally prefer fastboot but since many prefer recovery method, I will upload a zip that can be flashed via recovery.

Ah, fantastic! -- Thanks a lot :highfive:
Been using it for a solid few hours now and it's running great!
I'm getting issues though when I restore your preferences xml in FKU. It restores and reboots me to fastboot mode no matter what I do. I've rebooted multiple times to no avail and I've even started over by reflashing my ROM, then the kernel, then re-imported the settings again and the same thing. Any reason that might happen? I've wiped all previous settings in FKU previous to doing that. Not a big deal, just trying to get some good new settings to try from someone who knows what these numbers mean.

To use the settings xml, you'll need to be rooted. Copy the file to /data/data/com.franco.kernel/shared_prefs/ then make sure the permissions are 0660.
NOTE!! I've removed the link to the xml. I realized I had also modified the voltages. I'm so sorry. See the OP for the changes you need to make. Again, really sorry about that.

No problem at all, I just thought I was doing something wrong. Thanks, very much appreciated for the update!
Overnight, I lost a single percent of battery. I've got 'keep wifi-on during sleep' set to never, which I'm sure helps, but even still I can't recall a time recently where my battery did so well overnight!
