[Q] can't access files... broken screen. - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I broke the sceeen of my Vibrant... the screen is shattered and only shows light from the home button. touch doesnt work at all so blind anything is pretty much out. I want to get the photos and videos off of the devices internal memory... but i have no access. are there any programs out there that can help me out? or does anyone know any tricks I could try?

So the phone fully boots? What ROM are you using? Are you rooted? Is debugging enabled?

it fully boots, stock rom 2.1, rooted, and debugging is not enabled.

Can you use the volume buttons to boot to recovery? Might be able to pull some files with adb if you can get there.
Are you using stock recovery as well?

no its cwm recovery...

1.) Power off.
2.) Hold both volume buttons. Push and hold power button (to power on phone). When Vibrant screen appears (guess lol), release power button (but keep holding volume buttons)
3.) It should eventually get to CWM recovery. From there you can pull files to pc with adb

should be simple enough to blind.. the screen doesnt turn on at all soo.. yeah. but i'll give it a try -- thanks.

Should be about 1.5 seconds or so before releasing power button. (That's on mine anyway)

ok how would i do this in adb?

Sorry about the delay.
If you have access to adb from CWM recovery, all you need to do is "adb pull /sdcard"
This will pull all files on your internal (and probably external as well) storage to your current directory.
If you're specifically wanting stuff from your camera, you can run "adb pull /sdcard/DCIM"
Hope this helps.

got it! thank you very much!!

Cool. What did you end up doing?

So, I have this same problem, but have zero experience with andriod. I have been a windows mobile guy in the past, now on the iphone. Now I am sitting here with my brother's vibrant that has all his baby's pictures on it. Any help stepping me through this would be awesome. I have zero screen visibility, but you can tell there is some activity. The home buttons light up at the bottom.

^^ The exact same thing happened to me this weekend. I'm working on fixing it. I can't seem to get into CWM either, so no adb pull to get a backup yet. I can't even seem to get into download mode. mwmcginn, what ROM is your brother using? For the record, I was using the MIUI 1.4.29, I think. I'm not sure if there is a physical problem with the screen or if this is software.

I have the same problem, my screen got cracked and got my replacement via insurance. I just now realized the old one has to be sent back and having MIUI on it, I went to download mode (knowing the steps) and flashed back to JFD. Now I don't have any debugging enabled or root access or CWM installed.
What options do I have? Is there an ODIN that come prerooted and with CWM that I can then try adb?
Someone please help, as I don't really feel comfortable sending my phone full of private data to them.
Thank you.

I tried to fix mine (taking things apart usually fixes them, right?) and ended up cracking my screen. Now I get to pay $150 for a new screen, as I use my Vibrant on ATT so no warranty At least my phone will be working again. Going back to an old Nokia suuuucks!

This sucks man...
There must be some way to automatically load the sd card in windows. I even tried in Mac, as I read somewhere that it loads as soon as usb is plugged... Well I did that on my bro's mac and nothing happened, unless there are some commands that I have to follow... I am a dummy when it comes to Mac
Any other ideas?

Cant scroll down to flash from sd in Recovery

I was trying to root my Eris and i went to the 1 click eris root thread, downloaded it, followed all the directions, now when i hold vol up and power it boots to the recovery thing. From here im supposed to scroll down to flash zip from sd. I cant. Ive tried the track ball, the volume keys, everything. All it will let me do is press the trackball to select "reset device" or whatever the first option is. Any help? Like is there any way to flash that zip without using that recovery thing? Sorry if this is some simple noob mistake. just got my eris last week.
Anybody? Is there a different bootloader/recovery program i could load onto my phone to flash the "rootme.zip"?
EDIT: i think my trackball might just be broken or something, is there somethin i could edit to make it where the vol keys move the selector up and down instead of the track ball? i can still press the trackball, just cant scroll with it.
Sounds like a broken trackball to me. Mine broke a month after I first got my Eris, it would only scroll left. The phone was under warranty so I got it exchanged no problem. My younger brother had the same problem except his trackball would not scroll down.
The trackball on the Eris seems to be really sensitive and any pivoting force placed on the usb cable when it's plugged in seems to be the culprit. Just swap out your phone for a new one at a Verizon store and you'll be good to go.
Read the 2nd post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804946
and follow the links there.
This is a method for technically sophisticated users; if you are intimidated by it, then DON'T USE IT.
(The author of that method - me - will not offer spoon-feeding services.)
There is a chance that ROM Manager/Clockwork recovery will work without a trackball, but I don't use that, and in any event you need to be rooted to install that, so there is a chicken-and-egg problem in proposing it as a work-around.
bftb0
If your trackball is rooted please do not go further in the process... simply run the RUU and go back to 1.5 or 2.1 and return your phone for a new one/ Incredible.

I was going to offer the OP the same advice, except for one thing: he didn't mention whether or not the trackball problem is also present with the stock O/S booted.
In addition to lots of reports from folks that clearly have broken/bad trackballs, there have also been multiple reports from people that experience scrolling problems with the trackball only when Amon_RA is booted - those folks are sort of SOL when it comes to a return, as they can't demonstrate the problem occurs with factory software.
But, yeah - if it is broken in both Amon_RA and the stock O/S, the OP should try and get a replacement phone. (Ugh! From the looks of recent reports, the OP might just end up with a "refurb" that also has a broken trackball)
bftb0
No way i can return it. im not the original owner, i bought it off of a friend for $20 lol, he thought it was broken but it just needed a new battery. the trackball scrolls left and right just not up or down, and it does this whether im in Amon_RA or not. its just the track ball is broken. I consider myself pretty "tech sophisticated" so ill try bftb0's first word of advice and see if that will work. Thanks for the help guys. if it doesnt work i guess im just SOL on getting my Eris rooted. Oh well, im due an upgrade and will probably get the droid 2 anyway but i was hoping to get the eris going.
EDIT: LOL go figure my luck here...my USB port is also gimped, like as in doesnt work at all, i charge my batteries on battery cradles that plug in the wall, and the method of flashing a zip without using the trackball requires you to connect your phone to your computer with usb cable, so im SOL. Thanks for trying guys, any other help (doubtful there is any) would be much appreciated.
So i opened up the app drawer in landscape and had an idea. is there anyway someone could mod the 1 click root thing so that the recovery operates in landscape? because since my trackball scrolls left and right i could then scroll "down" to the flash from sd card option, if it was in landscape.
use clockwork mod. be warned tho people have reported that using that their phone has bricked. but i didnt have problems with it when i was waiting on my referb with a working trackball. Call verizon and tell them your trackball is screwed up scrolling or not scrolling whatever its doing.
Does anyone have a link I can use go back to stock. I need a new phone what Tom do I flash

How do i install clockwork on an eris? ive looked around but everythings for the facsinate or aria or EVO
i had similar issues with my trackball not responding in recovery earlier this week
did some searching and found that i had to connect the usb cable and try some gentle wiggling - the usb port is so close to the trackball that it sometimes affects how the ball's movement is read
doesnt need to be plugged into PC, just the part that connects to the phone
i wanted to update Kaosfroyo to v38 and i had no control when navigating recovery screen or it would scroll to the bottom of the list without me touching anything
after doing some investigation i booted into recovery with the usb connected and held the plug where it connects to phone and tried holding the cord at different angles until it responded as i needed it to and presto! now running KF38 with no trackball issues
XDA has had all of the answers to my Eris problems so far, just have to do some digging

bricked vibrant

installed the newest whisky rom this morning, all was well, did a reboot and now phone just goes to a screen with the phone to pc icon and nothing else. i cannot access adb or odin! please help. vibrant bricked!
Here is a couple of methods to get into download mode. Once you get to download mode, follow the directions in my next post...
First Method
1) Pull the battery, sim card, and sd card.
2) Reinsert battery but do not press any buttons.
3) Plug into usb that is connected to your computer. If something shows up on the screen (charging logo) then you should be golden.
4) Hold the vol up, vol down, and power until the screen comes on, immediately release the power button but not the other two. Hopefully it will boot into download mode and than you can use Odin to get back to stock.
Second Method
1) Another method that seems to work for some people is to pull the battery, sim, sd card.
2) Reinsert battery and hold both volume buttons but do not press power button.
3) Then plug in usb. The phone should boot into download.
Third Method
1) You will need the samsung ADB drivers installed for your phone and ADB.
Samsung Drivers for 32 bit Windows: http://files.androidspin.com/downlo...=SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe
Samsung Drivers for 64 bit Windows: http://files.androidspin.com/downlo...ung/vibrant/&file=usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip
2) Remove sim card and sd-card. Remove the battery.
3) Hold buttons vol up, vol down, and power.
4) While holding down those 3 buttons put the battery back in and keep holding all 3 buttons until the vibrant disappears and reappears. Once it reappears, release all 3 buttons.
5) Now connect your phone to your pc via USB cable.
6) Open a cmd prompt and navigate to the folder with ADB and type "ADB REBOOT DOWNLOAD" caps are not necessary.
7) Your phone will reboot into the download screen.
Typos and other gibberish courtesy of Swype
Download the files in the linked thread and follow the directions there our the ones in my post.
Odin and Files Needed Available Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
1) Open Odin and verify that one of the Com ports shows a device connected. If it doesn't try using a different usb port.
2) Load the .pit and pda files. It should be pretty obvious how to do that once you are in Odin.
3) Make sure that the option to partition is unchecked. The other two options should be checked.
4) Hit start and wait.
5) Your phone will restart when Odin is done and you will be good to go.

Had that few days ago..please try this to access download mode...
I did the following:
1. take out the battery, sim and microSD
2. put battery in
3. ONLY hold vol down & power
4. plug in the USB and voila...download mode!

none of those options work to get into download mode, even via adb with reboot download it still shows a screen with a cell phone, a orange triangle and a pc as soon as it gets power.

Is your phone hardware locked?
no, not hardware locked. im niot sure what the screen means. its a cell phone then a orange triangle with exclamation point, then a pc. but it goes to that as soon as the power is turned on
Hold down both volume buttons and the power button. Wait until the screen turns black and release the power button. Welcome to download mode.
Edit: do all of this with the battery in, the phone connected to the computer, and Odin open. Once it goes into download mode, Odin should immediately recognize it.

So what you're saying is...you commited fraud. You are causing my costs on phones to go up. You knew the risks of flashing ROMs on your phone and when you screwed up instead of taking responsibility you give the bill to all the other T-mobile customers...
THANKS!!!
Typos and other gibberish courtesy of Swype
how is that fraud? i explained to the rep what happened and they offered a replacement. i dont see how that caused your cost to go up... thanks for your response tho...
Ignore him, dude has no idea what he is talking about.
I had the same problem though, don't worry.
What will happen is they will force the phone into download mode, using the same method the jig thing does, wipe the phone, and flash the default rom to it. From there, they will resell it depending on the physical condition of the phone. Of course if it suffered water damage a steep fee will need to be paid. If they find out you voided the warranty, hope you have the insurance package or again, a steep fee.

You explained that you voided the warranty by flashing an aftermarket ROM and when you screwed it up you called them because you want it replaced and they said no problem? Do you really expect me to believe that you told the rep the full truth?
The costs go up because they factor in the costs of replacement phones due to manufacturing defects. When people screw up their own phone and then get it replaced, the costs in the future go up.

That's what insurance is for, stolen, lost, broken, BRICKED, just pay your deductible... and bam.I wish t-mobile had vanishing deductible

This wasn't a defect. He just screwed something up. They'll flash stock rom on it and then bam, resell it. Why do you think they asked for it back, just to throw it against the wall?
exactly, they will load a rom onto it and resell it, nothing wrong with the phone just software. either way ive got insurance on it and they accepted it . thanks for the input tho!
Thanks a ton!!! I've been up til 4am last night trying to fix my friend's Vibrant do to boot loop and had no way of accessing internal memory. Even CWM wouldn't do wipe data/factory reset....
He used Root Tools to change font and crashed it and I've tried method after method (ODIN, adb etc...) but was stuck! Finally I got the phone to pc icon and tried THIS method and what do you know...restored to stock under 3 minutes.
Much appreciated

Ur on a phone hacking community site complaining about wht hundreds of people do on this site all the time. We flash roms and sometimes we make mistakes I admit some people shouldnt flash roms but we pay our insurance for a reason. I hope u werent serious or ur just a really good troll!

[Q] Trying to go back to stock, but power button is broken

So here is my problem. I have been rooted on my Thunderbolt since I got it, though I never ended up putting on any new roms or anything (was more into it with my D1, but I regress). Anyways, today I notice my power button has crapped out on me. It still sticks out fine and I can very easily press it, but it does nothing. Currently my only way to turn the screen on and off is to unplug it, not a viable solution long term.
I decided that since I have insurance I will just take it in and have Verizon replace it for me. Which means I need to go to stock. Downloaded the PG05IMG file and placed it on the root, went through adb and got all the way to the bootloader. Except I can't select any menu options with he power button! So I was stuck. Decided to try and flash the PG05IMG file using Rom Manager, which got me back to stock but with root permissions (where I was before essentially).
So, is there some way for me to actually unroot this phone completely while avoiding the bootloader? Perhaps I downloaded a stock with root access rom instead of a normal one by mistake, but I was following exactly an unroot tutorial. Just worried, since the phone is almost unusable as a mobile device right now and it will take the Verizon guy all of 5 seconds to scroll down my app drawer and see SuperUser.
Thanks for any help, love XDA
well...
you could either take it to a local cell phone repair shop and have them fix the button....
or...
if your phone somehow got lost or stolen, there's always that route.......
õ_Ô
Have you tried using something like a pen or paperclip to press the power button? Not a long term solution but could get you back to stock if it works.
Sent from my HTC Thunderbolt
I have been trying with a sewing needle right now. Same idea as the paper clip, but I can't seem to find where the contact point is. Either that or it isn't the button that is bad but instead the contact. Don't know how to get around the latter problem.
Think I got it
So using adb and going into the bootloader never worked, still needed to click the power button to select the options. However, getting into the bootloader by holding volume down and doing a battery pull got me through and started the process automatically.
After it flashed I checked again and I have S-ON and no super user

[Q] Atrix wont boot

I have searched all over the internet and have not found a problem exactly like the one i am having. My Atrix 4g will not boot. It will get to the Dual Core screen, but no farther than that. I can get to the menu by holding down the volume but and power button but when i select a menu option it does nothing. My phone was not rooted, it is factory with the lastest version on it. THe other day i pulled the phone out of my pocket at it was turned off. I wouldn't turn i so i plugged it in and that is when the problems started. Any help would be great! Thank you!

You might need to restore it to factory setting with an external method 'cause your phone wasn't rooted or unlocked. Search for the RSDlite method to flash the original rom. You will need to download a specfic sbf depending on the operator of your phone, but there's actually a post in the forum where they hold every sbf

No there isn't. SBFs have been taken down because they're too dangerous and using them often results in bricking the device. You'll probably have to look for SBFs elsewhere.

I tried recovery mode again and while the phone was plugged in it just said "Entering Android Recovery Mode" i unplegged it and the android guy with the explanation point showed up so i plugged the phone back in real quick (didnt want the battery to die.) With that screen i tried tapping in the lower right hand corner of the screen to access the menu, but nothing would happen from that point.
UPDATE: I was able to press both volume buttons and get into the menu. I was able to select wipe/factory reset buy pushing the power buttong. It is currently rebooting.... has been for several minutes..... Hope this works!!
i tried making a factory cable last night but, it didnt turn out to good..... Is there anyway to charge the battery enough, without the phone, to allow me to flash the device?

[Q] how to access internal storage without a working screen?

So my wife left her phone on the roof of her car, then drove to work. Our neighbor dozens of houses away found it in his yard, tracked her down, and returned the phone. It worked for a few hours, then the screen died. The phone itself still works, but the screen will not come on. Apparently it got water damaged in this process, so we ended up getting a replacement thru insurance.
She would like to recover her photos from the old phone internal storage, but I can't get the computer to see the internal storage.
I can't remember exactly which recovery is installed, I think it's TWRP 2.2.1, but I'm not sure about that. I tried booting into recovery, then clicking on the screen where the "Mount" button is on my phone (TWRP 2.4.4), but her phone just vibrates when I click that location on her screen, and nothing happens.
Is there any way to force the phone to start into a mode that will allow me to access the internal storage?
I think I have USB debugging enabled, but it was many months since I rooted her phone, so I'm not sure exactly what the exact status of her software is on that phone.
thanks in advance for any help with this!
You can try something like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1821601
I just tried it and it works great, it looks like you can only do one at a time but its fast!!
Not sure if you know about adb, if not you need this installed.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Did it work JustinChase?
That tool is now part of my collection.
Sorry, when I got home from work to get started on the process, the screen came on and I was able to access the internal storage without difficulty. Sadly, I'm still out the $150 for the replacement phone.
Thanks for the help, I hope to not need it again anytime soon.
