Best Kernal/Rom combo for battery life? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know there is a lot of kernel / Rom combos out there now, so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good one that would give me pretty decent battery life. I'm currently using times_infinity's kernel with superclean rom. The battery life is meh at best imo; great speed however.
Anyone have some suggestions?
Thanks,
Kal

This is a very subjective question. Results vary from device to device. The best thing to do is experiment yourself. There's no harm in asking I guess but you will more than likely find out that what one person experiences is different from what another person experiences.
Also, two more things: 1) You are posting this in the wrong forum. Try General. 2) There are lots posts on this already.

I hear good things about sc 2.9.2 with times_infinity's comavolt kernel.
Ask your questions in Q&A next time. Not only is it a rule but you'll also get a lot more responses.

Y u no post in right section?

Will you get out of the dev forum?

Many people have had success with the comavolt kernel or pbjt UV 100 with nameless v3. I read a report of 30 hours.
Keep in mind tho you cannot have everything. There will always be a reaction to every action. More speed less life or more life less speed.

Any ron and any kernel will give you about the same battery life....... there's never a massive difference. If you don't care about performance any simple UV kernel is fine. I am running of kernel 1.3 ghz and battery is the same.

My bad for posting in this area, I thought I was in general.
As for performance, that really is not a HUGE deal for me, pretty much anything is a upgrade from the stock crap USCC put out...
As it stands now, phone being completely idle without any involvement from me whatsoever, i'm losing about 5% battery life per hour; which doesn't seem very normal?

Since this thread will probably get moved to Q&A, I'll just reply here instead of starting a new thread on more or less the same subject.
Anyway, can anyone shed any light on why there's such a difference in battery life between 2.2 and what we're were able to get on 2.1?
On DJ05/DL09, using JT's 1/23 undervolted kernel and a stock debloated rom, I was getting upwards of 72 hours on a charge. Now, on again, a stock but debloated rom, I struggle to get 24 hours on any of the currently available undervolted kernels. Why the difference?
I don't appear to be seeing any battery-life benefit from the latest kernels. On the stock EB01, I has been getting pretty much the same 24 hours. Now, with undervolted kernels and underclocked to 800mhz max, I'm still getting about 24 hours. I really miss getting 3 days per charge and not having to worry about toting a charger around with me just to get through a day.

I would suggest any undervolted kernel with any rom (possibly Superclean 2.9.2).
Use Set CPU and change max frequency to 800MHz from 1000MHz as you wont find much difference in performance.

Superclean and underclocked eb01 to 800mhz

This is kind of exactly what I was getting it. My battery life seems horrid going to 2.2. Curious, what app are you using to monitor battery life?

I had the same experience going from stock and dj05 to super clean. Right out of the box I had 40 hours of moderate usage, and dj05 was at 40% after two days of moderate usage.
Now with sc2.9.2 with jt's ec10 kernel and eb01 radio, I get 13 hours with losing more battery while in sleep.

Yea, I'm really close to going back to 2.1 DJ05/DL09. On 2.2, I had been holding out for kernel source to be available so the devs could put together undervolted kernels. But now that that's happened, and not only am I not seeing any improvement, but I'm now underclocking just to make it through 24 hours, it just doesn't seem worth staying on 2.2.
For example, I started this morning with a full charge. I've made or received two phone calls, totaling 16 minutes. I've checked my e-mail a few times, and I VNC'd into a computer for no more than 2 to 3 minutes. I'm now at 32% remaining after 13.5 hours. At that rate, it'll be stone dead by 20 hours. And to get this, I have it clocked down to 800mhz, and 200mhz max when the screen is off.
I had been getting a solid 24 hours on the previous stock kernels - not undervolted and not underclocked. What gives?

Screw it, I'm flashing back to 2.1.
Less than 3 hours, my phone sat, unused, screen off, clocked down to 200mhz, and the battery lost another 15%. Complete nonsense. In no possible way is FroYo worth this.
More than 5% per hour, on an idle phone, on an undervolted kernel and underclocked down to 200mhz.

Still trying to figure this out
Hey guys; I've read lots but I'm not really getting a couple of things. First, I don't actually know what I have (except that it's Froyo 2.2.1) because I did do a full flash using SC or some equivalent so I'm going to post what I have. My question is: what could I change with this setup (which is running fine) to improve battery performance? From what I'm reading, I probably only need to update a kernel or something. Please advise; what would you change about this set-up to try to get more batter life on a VZW Samsung Fascinate:
H/W: I500.04
F/W: 2.2.1
Baseband: S: i500.04 V.EB01
Kernel: 2.6.32.9

[Q] Best battery life? ROM/Kernel/Apps

Coming from the Evo 4G, i saw a tremendous improvement in battery life going from stock to rom with netarchy-toastmod sbc-havs-more-cfs, no set cpu. Just the kernel alone was giving me about 25-50% more battery life easy, in alot of cases more. I went from needing to charge after 12-14 hours to needing to charge after 18-28 hours.
So what is the best kernel for the 3VO? Whats going to increase my battery life the most?
Am i going to have to go with a combination of kernel/setcpu (undervolt, underclock) to see an improvement?
I haven't found any kernel yet that gives me battery life like stock. However, my phone is always getting plugged in and unplugged all day when working on my ROM so I haven't had much time to fully test it and do a battery calibration. I would try the test SBC kernel located I'm General. I'm running that right now, always loved SBC.
As far as ROMs go, mine gets pretty good battery life. 19+ hours of usage on stock kernel with moderate use. Plus, the OC daemon is wonderful with the script I wrote for it.
i use gb sense has the most features
viperRom, the included daemon that controls the cpu clock speed is amazing here is some info on it.
-viperboy- said:
OC Daemon
The OC daemon was created by rmk40 of Team Unity. I take no credit for the daemon, only the script I made to make it easier to work with. More information can be found here, but I will sum it up and explain the script below...
This daemon, written in C, completely eliminates the need for SetCPU and other CPU controlling apps. The daemon handles min/max frequencies for both screen on and screen off but it has one more trick up its sleeve... It can change the governor INSTANTLY depending on the screen state. I have tested it and I can tell you that it really does work instantly and I think this is going to be a great battery saver! I have set default values within the ROM as follows: Screen Off - conservative @ 192min/486max and Screen On - ondemand @ 192min/1188max. Using these settings, I get NO lag. Battery life is amazing, over 19+ hours for me with moderate usage! See for yourself...

Here is a link to the Rom
Thanks ill check out your rom, is it possible to add the oc daemon/script to my current rom, or is that something that has to be cooked in?
Been running Viper's Rom today, and 6hours into it, I have 65% Battery left. I'd say it is working well under moderate use and living in the sticks.
Im currently running a stripped down version of the stock rom , all bloat has been removed as well as a considerable amount of sense . That in itself improved battery life slightly .......I said slightly lol . Today is gonna be the first day with Netarchy's Silverneedle . As time progresses kernals will advance and become easier on the battery . Setcpu also gave a slight boost to battery life with a screen off profile as well . The current SBC kernel is based off Net's kernel but MS is still doing the adjustments to get the charging routine optimal . Much like his work in the 4G it took some tinkering to get it to be one of the crown jewels in the Evo 4G's bag of tricks . I have no doubt that once he is done with the adjustments it will be just as good for the 3D . The 3D has pretty good life out of the box with all things considered . Once the refining of kernals and roms gets to the sweet spot I feel you will easily see this phone last a day without an extended battery .
Viper gets my vote.

How to find out what the battery sucker is CyaogenMOD or ADW EX

Hi there
I recently switched to CyanogenMOD and also bought AWD EX and while having the phone set on battery save something seems to leach the it empty fast within a day and not using it even a lot.
I am not very familiar with Android and finding what process might be responsible for the battery drain.
Any idea? Is CyanogenMOD or ADW EX very battery demanding?
First try out BetterBatteryStats to see what is keeping your phone awake.
Did u battery wiping/calibrating before/after flashing ROM?

yep, download betterbatterystats, (xda edition would do) then look for processes that use a lot of time, not those with few seconds. If there isnt any, look for any partial wakelocks that also, use a lot of time and root out the battery draining application.
If nothing seems to be wrong, i suggest you download battery calibration app from market : http://bit.ly/x5sPR6 and calibrate.
Cheers

@the pic complain lol whats wrong wif the pic D:
@cpuneversleep. the cpu not sleeping is probably due to a wakelock thats keeping it from going to sleep. use betterbatterystats to sort out the burden app.
ah I did not calibrate the battery - So I will download the app and follow the charge and then discharge process?
I think I did this cash wipe fore flashing the rom. Why do I need to do this?
I have attached the screenshots from my Android system including the states
and as it looks Android System is what is using up 45% of the battery.
However again I have no idea how to read this or what it means. What are those wakelocks - I assume a process preventing Android to put the CPU into a lower MHZ frequenze to drain less power?

Why should I reflash it - what does it fix or do? I am asking because I do not understand the reason for this but would love to get educated
Wakelocos are processes tat cn prevent your phone from going to sleep properly, which may cause battery drain. It is under partial wakelocks(click the scroll down menu)
When you reflash your rom, your sort of "reset" it back to its "default" state, so anything tat may have affected the battery would be gone.

with reflash the CyanogenROM do you really mean to reflash it or do a factory reset ?

its just a reflash, all your settings will go back to default. its not a factory reset.
Ok I wiped clean the phone, reflashed the rom, did a battery calibration
but for some reason I still have the large feeling that CyanogenMOD 7.2.0 drains the batter dramatically faster than Froyo did.
When I woke up 40% of battery was lost within the 9 hours I slept.
When I only browsed the web a little the battery took another deep hit as you can see in the graph when Wifi got on.
However in contrast to before now the only two things taking up the biggest parts seem to be cell Standby and Phone idle. At last the android system is not doing it.
Considering that 10 hours of mainly stand by drains nearly 50% of the phone makes this a unusable situation. Mild browsing the web for 30 minutes killing 10% is just bizarre.
Do you have any other idea? I was under the impression that CyanogenMOD 7.2 has much better battery life but I feel at least how things work on my phone it is way the opposite.
Could ADW Ex be the offender ?

What kernel are you using? There is a kernel out there, I believe franco's that drains battery on standby. I had this problem to and therefore switched.
Yesterday I flashed adfad666's Unofficial CM7.2.0-RC0 and this one is using this Kernel:
[email protected]
What kernel would you propose to use which would work with the CyanogenMOD ROM I am using?
If you have a better combination please tell me.

I've always had battery drain with kernel .35 even though battery life is suppose to be better. For better battery and stability it's better, in my opinion to go with a .32 kernel. You have flashed the new baseband therefore you'd have to revert back but I don't recommend that. CM7 just announced official release and a nightly build is up. I'm giving a try (seems to be better responsive). This has a different kernel. It uses 2.6.35.10.
I actually do not have the new baseband installed - flashed I only flashed the Cyanogen ROM with the old baseband.
Thus I could easily flash any oldbaseband rom.
Anything you suggest?

Yes, I suggest AdFad666's A8 version of CM7. I then suggest to flash Goldenleaf.v111206 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227682
Don't forget to wipe battery stats after all of that.
Where do you get the A8 build from?
I only find this as being the latest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436952#5
Do I even need to flash this old baseband rom he mentions on his website when I never did change my old baseband anyway?

I have been reading in the forms that this is an issue. I too am experiencing the heat issue, yet I don't see any fix. I read that the screen and/or the radios are the issue.

Mine gets a little hot at times too. I just pulled mine out of my pocket to show a friend and my screen was on and it was pretty warm, more than usual.
yeaa it gets really hot. i can't even play any hd games. the phone might over heat and crash
I had 14 hours of use today and over 4 hours screen on time. I think the higjest one got was 95 deg
I have the extended battery if that matters
Yeah, she gets a little warm. Anecdotal evidence says that the phones that get way hot (130-150 during games, 120 ish during regular use) have a hardware problem... I have read from a lot of people who have been that hot and say the trade-in was better.
Also, the extended seems to dissipate the heat better.
As for me, I didn't have much of an issue until after the first OTA. Now I top out around 125 when playing heavy games or surfing hard on 4G. Not happy about that, but I don't think it's hardware in my case. I need to get an extended anyway....
Its because of a CPU issue where the CPU runs at the highest clock speed instead of scaling like it should while the screen is on. I have this problem as well and my battery is absolute **** now :|

i am using "easy battery" to help me keep my battery life and kinda keep it cooler. i recommend to return to stock os and wait until the official upgrades are given out.
When I first got this phone it actually ran hot, so hot that I can actually feel the heat on my leg when I put it in my pocket.
When I upgraded to the current leaked RUU, the heat problems went away.
I have zero heat issues on my Rezound, I still haven't gotten the new leak yet, waiting for a ROM that makes me really want to do it.

maybe the official update will fix the problem
You could run the RUU again and you would be back to bone stock, albeit a leaked "official" stock, but still stock. You would have the stock recovery and be locked again.

Looking for a Stable Daily Driver

I had been having alot of issues with battery drain so I just Odined back to 2.1, formatted my internal and external sd cards and rooted my phone. I've been using 2.1 for a couple of weeks and I can't stand how sluggish the stock rom is. So I'm back on the hunt for a custom rom. I'm looking for a Stable rom in which everything works normal. I need it to be speedy and at this point I don't care what version of android the rom is. I found this only to be disappointed that the multiupload link to the rom is down... Any ways im just looking for a normal looking stockish rom that isn't as gaudy any of the team toxic stuff but might have the same feature sets and stableness to go along with it. Sorry if this is to long.
if you like stock, you may want to just apply the Voodoo lagfix to your phone. That should solve your sluggishness.
Well the only thing I like about stock is that everything works and a better battery life lol. Other than that I miss all the features of custom Roms so I wouldn't mind a 2.2 or a 2.3 rom as long as its stable, quick and everything works.
What rom were you on before? I've only tried a few roms since I've gotten a vibrant and have felt that the vibrant cm7 nightlies are pretty stable. I would combine with eugene's vibrant stock kernel for good battery life. Some good combinations you may want to try out:
CM7 + eugene's vibrant kernel
ICS Euphoria + Kiss 8.2
CM9 + Kiss 8.2 / or Subzero kernel
ICS is actually quite stable now. There are a few kinks here and there, but its just as good as 2.3.7. I haven't looked into the 2.2 roms so I don't know. Hope this helps.
The last thing I was using was Euphoria but I had serious battery issues, it would last me maybe 6 hours tops =/
If you're looking for something stable and completely functional you should try a 2.2 custom rom. Personally I prefer Bionix 1.3.2. I'm always coming back to this rom when I need my phone to be perfect.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA
Check out Fishman's mods. He's modded Bionix and Deranged9. I am testing an RC version of his D9 that should be released soon enough. Stable, fast, everything works and you can use any and all the 2.2 kernels to OC/UV, Voodoo,...
Themes can always be changed, so I'll take performance over gaudiness, tweak it out and then re-theme it later. ICZenwich is my ICs ROM of choice, but you'll have to go to the Rootz site to get that.

Very fast, very stable...great battery.
Ofc, I use sio/conserv and undervolt and freeze apps I don't need also though.
(Im also supercharged)
Woodrube, Fishman's was exactly what I was looking for works great thanks a bunch. I used to use Bionix way back when and found my self going back to it constantly but I formatted my comp and phone recently and miss placed the file but this seems to work even better! Thanks again man =D

If you're looking for something stable and completely functional you should try a 2.2 custom rom. Personally I prefer Bionix 1.3.2. I'm always coming back to this rom when I need my phone to be perfect.

Holy crap I think I might have to give this a shot if fishman's doesn't work out to my expectation. Also I've had my phone since launch day I'm not sure how long you've had yours and I think since I've flashed my phone soooo many times and at times without charging it all the =/ it's degraded the life of the battery as well as thrown the calibration completely off. Yes I have tried to recalibrate multiple times as well but the only thing that gets me through the day is being on a 2.2 rom or stock.

I've had my phone for about a year and a half now
Not sure how long the phone's been out haha...but I got it
close to when the vibrant was new ^^
I used to have a lot of issues with battery life...I would maybe get 10 hours.
But after researching and trying new things...I found out a number of things to help, and now I get great life..on most roms.
A tend to keep my battery at 200 - 800 (sometimes 1000)
and undervolt accordingly
1000 -25
800 -50
600 -125
400 -150
100 -175
Ofc undervolting values differ from phone to phone.
I use subzero kernel #70
and use conserv/ sio
I tend to freeze a lot of apps with titanium backup
and use autostarts to make sure apps only start themselves when I want them to.
I use very few widgets, and make sure to kill my apps when Im done using my phone.
I also keep brightness at about 50% - 25% always...rarely at 100%
That is funny. My settings are almost exactly those. Birds of a feather my friend. Still getting used to your name over "there" but I recognized that screen shot right off.
Only difference I see in our settings is that I OC to 1200 and use smartass sometimes and conservative sometimes depending on what I am doing or testingout.
OP, check out my batter guide in my signature or stickied in the Q&A section. It has everyting you need to get the most out of your battery (even if it is an old one) for all ROMs, 2.2, 2.3.x and 4.0.x
X- I am out of thanks for the day but I'll tap yours later on when it resets.
Thanks a bunch guys I really really appreciate it. Also I hit thanks on both =D.
Edit: One last question was do you guys know how to get rid of the Bali splash screen it's pretty hideous...
It is the kernel splash screen so you would have to change it in the kernel itself. As hideous as it is, I use the splash screens for an impromptu reality check. I know if I don't see one in the right order, something is going to go haywire in a minute or two.
For me I have 3
Bootloader splash ->Gingerbread bl
Kernel Splash -> SubZero
ROM Splash -> ICZen In that order. Sure it is big and yellow but the beauty is the ROM animations.
Sidenote: If you don't the boot animation, you can drop one in /data/local and set your permissions and on boot it will show your new one w/o ever changing your original. I do this to my wife's phone alot just to freak her out. She's caught on to it now though.

hahaha, Does Subzero work well with fishman's? if so I might just go to that. Thanks again
No. Subzero is an ICS kernel.
Check out Serendipityguy's kernel bible stickied in the Dev section. It will tel you what works with what as far as 2.2, 2.3 and 4.0

I may have actually *stolen* some of my settings from your post, in fact Lol
I used to OC to 1200 and use smartass (or a modified lulzactive) but Subzero's build 70 is so smooth that I can sit at 800 with conserv and feel no lags whatsoever. I can only assume that he's using butter throughout his code lol
Any 2.1/2.2 ROM
2.3 and 4.0 are still in development ...and although stable still buggy

[Q] Battery Drains, Kernels and Modems

Hey guys. I've read and learned a lot from XDA, but there are some things I can't really understand or test by myself. So, I'm experiencing some trouble right now, and I need your help.
So, I've been testing roms since I bought my GS2. Almost 2 years later, my battery lasts 4 hours. I used to think the problem was the battery, so I bought a brand new one (sammy brand).
Well, it also lasts 4 hours, with CM10.1
So, I tried installing DorimanX kernel. The battery lasts longer now (not much)
I also searched a lot about Modems, and I read somewhere that changing modems would make the battery last longer. But I can't really understand why. Can someone help me? I'm really lost, I can't put everything together and understand this thing.
Please, help me answer some questions.
tl;dr
1- What is the best Modem out there? Can I install it using CM10.1, or is the modem bind to a ROM?
2- Why the battery won't last longer as the Android upgrades? My brother's GS3 (stock JB) saves much more battery than mine GS2.
3- What is the rom that saves most battery out there? As CM improves, the battery drains faster. Should I go back to stock? Does stock ROMs cosume less battery?
Thanks in advance.
(sorry about my poor english)

1. as far as i know using specific modem depends on the region & network. changing modem sometimes solves your problem, sometimes not. you need to try which suites.
2. install cpu spy, better battery stats and gsam battery monitor. check whether your device is going to deep sleep or not. if not see which app/process is consuming too much battery. 1- try callibrating the battery and then monitor it. 2-if that does not fix, enable aeroplane mode, then power off, power on after couple of seconds and disable aeroplane mode. monitor the battery. 3-if that does not fix check the battery stats log and post it in BBS thread so that some expert may analyze the log and provide you with feedback. make sure for each solution you give ample of time to monitor in order to narrow down the problem.
3. you need to try different ROMs one by one and use it for some time to know which suites your better on your need.
read somthing about media scanner issue? 4 hours.....boy

1. Modems are location dependant, so try to find the stock modem or one for the carrier you're with.
2. Battery depends on a lot of things. The apps you use, screen time, wake locks, signal strength, size of the battery, os version, how recently you flashed something, how many email accounts are syncing, apps that sync.. The list could go on forever.
3. As stated above, cpu spy to see if your device is deep sleeping and better battery stats to check the wake locks. If you flashed something recently give it at least 3 battery cycles before judging the battery life. You can also try to underclock your device if you are rooted and have a rom-kernel combination that allows it

There is an issue on JB that enables the media scanner nonstop. It has been draining battery like crazy. In some cases it drains 2% per MINUTE.
In my situation, I think that it's not my problem.
I'll check all your tips and give a feedback later.
Thank you very much!

There is an application called rescan media root on the play store. It can stop the media scanner from running
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
cough
I've got the results of the apps running
App usage -> 72% (50% is Kernel)
Cpu -> 48% 200 MHz and 39% on Deep Sleep
Partial Wakelocks -> NetworkLocationLocator (45min), etc
Kernel Wakelocks -> vbus_present (7h), PowerManagerService (3h), Multipdp (1h25min), etc
So, what are your suggestions? Should I downgrade to stock rom with siyah kernel?
Nowadays, I'm focusing battery. I want it to last a full day with moderate use. Today I didn't use the phone (at all) and it last 12h, with 20% remaining.

I've been experiencing the same problem with my SGS2's battery and noticed that it is getting bloated. I purchased a new one to prevent severe damage on my mobile phone.
