[Q] Boot into Recovery - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to cold boot into recovery? I used to be able to do it on my G2.

Just boot into the bootloader (power on + volume up) and then choose recovery from the menu.

Make sure to release the buttons right as the screen turns on... Takes a little timing but it works.

Thank you.

When ever i do this, i choose the bootloader option. then it takes me to the menu where i can choose the recovery option but before i get the chance to hit anything, it just starts to update. what should i do from here?

i then deleted pg05IMG.zip. i got to get to the point to hit recovery but when i do that it just boots right back into the bootloader it wont start up the recovery and it wont factory reset it. am i screwed?

sorry for the triple port. it says i have s-on. how would i turn s-off

are you rooted??? you need to root to get s-off

i am rooted but for some reason it says s-on right now and i dont have adb on this computer. how would i be able to turn s-off?

what method of root did you use? i used the "unlocked bootloader + permaroot" method by jcase and have never lost root or s-off.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616

did you leave the PG051IMG file on your sd card? if so your phone will look for it and try to update.

I used the easy root with no adb. i flashed a new rom and it froze at the startup screen. so i booted into the bootloader to get into the recovery but it wouldnt let me. it said updating so i let it update and it said "update failed. version to old. reboot device". i then deleted the file PG05IMG.zip so it would let me boot into recovery. but then it now says s-on andd it wont let me turn my phone besides booting into the bootloader. even the splash screen wont show up. it also won let me factory reset its just stuck in the bootloader. how should i precede here? is my phone bricked?

i did leave it on but after i realized it and took it off i had already let it try to update and it now says "mecha xd ship s-on"

yeah i've heard of problems using the easy root methods...seriously doubt phone is bricked...i think you can just put the stock PG051IMG on the root of your sd and flash in bootloader and you'll be back to stock. if you go to the andirc help channel someone there should be able to walk you thru it...there is a link in the op of the thread i gave you link to in earlier post.

ok thanks for all of your help

[Q] Thunderbolt stuck in bootloader with S-ON. Am I Screwed?

Hey folks,
So I was stupid enough to allow my Thunderbolt to OTA. From there, the phone would restart approx 2 min after boot, and try and unpack the update (I presume).
Fast forward, I tried to downgrade again, but screwed up.
Essentially, this is where I'm at now:
S-ON with H-Boot 0.95.0000
My Radio is 1.02.00.0103_2r
And I get a security warning with any Rom I try to flash. So I think I'm kind of screwed. Opinions? Suggestions?
Any wisdom you could glean would be extremely helpful.
Resolved
Apparently I was too quick to post.
I was able to resolve my issues using the page below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423
The reason I was freaking out, was because I assumed since I was in S-ON that I wouldn't be able to flash anything, and I couldn't boot so the phone was inaccessible via ADB.
Anyways, all is well.
pls help the same thing happened to me.... visited your link.. when i type 'adb devices' it shows no devices listed... when i choose recovery mode on boot loader screen it shows device offline... What should I do????
I messed up...
The directions were so wonderfully simple and yet I managed to mess up.
I loaded the files in the wrong order. I know, there is a huge giant warning and I feel like an idiot. Now I'm stuck on HBOOT with a security warning.
How can I fix this?
Thanks.

This is what I did when this happened to me. First, what version is your hboot? If its 1.05.0000 or lower this should work, at least it did for me. First you have to get the sd card out and get this file http://minus.com/lBEp5MMf0P6de on the root of the card and rename it pg05img. That file is the latest stock RUU and its gingerbread. Make sure its not named pg05img.zip.zip because the file extension could be set to be hidden on whatever pc or someone else's phone you are using to rename it. Now put the card back in the phone and put the battery in and hold the down volume button while pressing power. When the screen comes on let go of the buttons. I think this automatically goes to bootloader but if it doesnt then use the volume buttons to scroll to bootloader and press power. It will find the pg05img file and start loading it. When it asks if you want to update hit yes and let it do its thing. It take a few minutes. Once its done it will say so and ask if you want to reboot. Hit yes and when it gets done booting up you should be runni.g the gingerbread I think sense 2.1. After that you can root if you want. I used revolutionary to root, its pretty simple.

Is there a video to root this phone?

I have had been able to unlock and root my previous HTC phones. HD 1&2 Kaiser.. none as complicated as this one. What happened to using DAFT or NAND?

Not sure how this is so complicated.
You download a file (recovery) and place it on the root of your external sdcard.
Boot to hboot holding volume down and pressing power.
Update the recovery.
Boot to recovery.
Install your custom rom from your custom recovery.
OK I have placed file in root of extsdcard. When I go to update recovery there is a icon with a green symbol the another icon of the phone with a red triangle and exclamation appear nothing else.
Have unlocked through Tmobile code and have S-off phone doesn't seem to respond to any of the instructions posted ?
Unlocked? Like unlocked for other carriers? Are you sure you have S-Off? Just make sure you copy over the recovery file onto Removable Disk and not HTC Storage. Once you boot into bootloader it should auto install and ask for your go.

1. Download recovery v5.0.2.0 for the Amaze 4g Here: Download ClockworkMOD 5.0.2.0 Make sure its named PH85IMG.zip Nothing else or it wont work
2. Copy the PG58IMG file into the Root folder of your SD card (The main Folder of your Memory Card External SDCARD)
3. Turn off your phone FUlly and reboot into the Bootloader/HBOOT screen (see post above on how to get to hboot screen)
4. Press Volume up to Accept when it asks" Do you want to start the update"
5. Press Power Off to Reboot back to android after installation is successful (normal screen with homescreen)
6. Delete PG58IMG from your memory card and you can now root using step 3 below or install a custom ROM using CWM (Customs Roms are already rooted)

Then you may have to follow step 3.

I'm not an expert, but this should get you going. If you can't get it, you might just want to back down.

I seriously doubt that you have S-OFF because only very few of us do.
IF by chance you do then you don't need to unlock the bootloader.
And unlocking the bootloader is done through htcdev NOT T-Mobile.
This process is very simple. But since you don't even know if you have S-ON or S-OFF, hboot locked or unlocked then we need to start from the very beginning.
Download a data backup app like MyBackup from Market. This is to backup your current data. If you don't then you WILL lose it if you currently have S-ON.
Remove your battery to make sure it's completely powered off.
Place it back in.
Hold down the volume down rocker on the right side of your phone.
While holding press the power button until you see a white screen.
At the top I'm 99% sure it will say S-ON. If it does then you need to unlock the bootloader before doing anything else. Once you do you're okay to update the recovery. Once you flash the Unlock_code.bin file from htc then it will take you to a black screen. Use the volume up and volume down to chose from one of two options. Basically do nothing or unlock and void your warranty. Go ahead and unlock your device. This is required if you really want root since we don't have a way to get S-OFF.
You're phone will reboot and your data will be gone. Don't even bother restoring yet.
Download a custom rom (either one of the basic stock roms, BeastMod or QuikSense). Place the .zip file on the root of your external sdcard.
Also download the PH85IMG.zip file and place it on the root of your external sdcard as well.
Power off your phone.
Boot into bootloader again like earlier. Volume down and power.
Now it will say Unlocked at the top. If it does then your good to proceed.
It should also scan your sdcard and ask you if you want to update. Go ahead.
It will flash the new custom recovery.
Now all you need to do is flash your new custom rooted rom from recovery and your all set.
Restore your backups.
Come back here and hit the Thanks button below.
Thanks for the help guys will try again tonight.

Need Help please. Trying to get to hboot

I held the volume down key then held power button down. While holding the volume down & releasing the pwr button it only booted normally.
I noticed while holding both buttons down when trying again that the soft keys blink at the bottom. I hit the Home key in the middle and now every time it boots it says "SAFE MODE" in the bottom left of the screen. I tried repeating the same procedure, but it still boots while displaying "SAFE MODE" on the lower left of the screen.
I could still never get in bootloader mode.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
I should add that I did use the RUNME method for rooting the phone a couple of days ago. This morning I installed the apk GOOManager to install TWRP. When I select reboot to recovery, it would say I need to do it manually which was why I started to do the steps I described above.

Thanks! Turned it off! I am now in recovery. It shows at the top:
***TAMPERED***
***LOCKED***
I'm a bit confused if we don't have S-OFF & it's still locked is it like the 3D with a locked bootloader?
Crap..then I chose to go into RECOVERY & it shows the small icon of the phone with a red triangle over it with the exclamation mark. Can't pull the battery! How do I restart it! Darn it... shouldn't have messed with it! I've rooted a dozen phones before this...
Well, it eventually rebooted on it's own. Whew. patience! It no longer says safe mode either which is good. I wanted to make a backup image with TWRP before trying other ROMS. I'm not sure what gives & why after using GooManager in didn't seem to install.

I never had a 3D, so I can't really help you there. Have you unlocked your bootloader through HTC Dev or did you just run the One Click Root from the development section? I ask because in order to install a custom recovery, you must have your bootloader unlocked, which only HTC Dev can do right now.
I used the one click method from the dev section watching the vid on Hack.com or whatever it was... using the RUNME.BAT

Yea, that's the problem, you must unlock your bootloader in order to install a custom recovery. Although I'm not sure if you can do the HTC Dev process with a "Tampered" bootloader. You might have to un-root first.

Thanks for the help.. I'll look into that. I'll have to turn this one in on a claim as I had broke the screen over the weekend...have to wait until my Defender case arrives 1st and more stock to come in so I can have fun with this one until I file the claim.

just hold down power for like 10 sec and it will hard reboot
it didnt install because your bootloader is still locked, you just have software level root.
Thanks for the help guys! I didn't know the one click method still left it locked. I'll do the HTC method then. I did that with my 3D...even though the bootloader was still locked...

So, I'm assuming you've never seen a stock recovery. The phone with the red triangle after you select recovery from the bootloader shows that first. As an added precaution, you then must hold vol. + and press power and it will boot into the real recovery. In order to flash any fancy ROMs or anything, you need to install a custom recovery. At present, TWRP is recommended due to it having the /misc partition error corrected.

No. You don't need to unroot first. I used zedomaxs root method then HTC unlock with no issues, then twrp recovery

Problem booting phone

My phone is stuck in a bootloop at the white HTC screen. I am able to go to the HBOOT screen but I can't boot into recovery. Also, my phone doesn't show up when I plug it into the computer. It does say FASTBOOT USB though. Also, I have relocked the bootloader. I'm on Hboot 2.27. I have tried flashing the RUU but that hasn't done anything.
At this point I just want my phone working right now. I wouldn't mind losing root and doing a full reset if it meant my phone was working. Also I would like to point out that my phone won't charge its battery. I had to buy a new battery that has a charge on it to use my phone.
Thanks!
So you tried flashing an RUU through bootloader with a higher version than what you were on before, it flashed successfully, and it still won't boot? Did you try flashing the RUU twice? If not, try. If you have already, someone else will have to help you. You can also flash an RUU from your computer using fastboot if it's not working from the bootloader, but I'm not sure what the command would be. Just keep in mind that any device that fastboot recognizes is not at all bricked.
Did you try flashing a recovery in hboot?

Were you using clockwork mod recovery?
You need to flash the RUU twice, and that means that it will probably reboot itself back to hboot and then you have to select bootloader again maybe in order to let it see the RUU and continue, do NOT count this as the second RUU flash, even if it reboots a few times and you restart it or it restarts itself, let it update until you get to the screen that says update successful press power to reboot. Now press power and count that as the first time, let it reboot and then once it boots to the first screen you want to pull the battery and boot to hboot again and say yes to the update again and continue until it says update complete, press power to reboot and then let the phone boot and you can skip through the setup screens without signing in.
Now that the phone is booted, just run the command to unlock the bootloader. Your Unlock_code.bin file should still be in your fastboot folder so it only takes running the command "Fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin" in the command prompt. If your fastboot.exe is located inside the Platform-Tools folder, then back out to where you're looking at the Platform Tools folder, hold shift on your keyboard and right click on the folder, choose open command window here. Then type the command I put in quotes up above, and say yes to the unlock on your phone.
That's why you skipped through the setup earlier, no use in signing in until after you unlock because the unlock wipes the phone clean.
With your bootloader unlocked and phone working like it should, you will want to flash a custom recovery. DO NOT flash the official clockwork mod or you will have the battery problem you're currently experiencing. I would flash amon ra 3.15, because it just works, but if you want to use something else, use Fly Half's recoveries which are posted in the development section and do not update your recovery with rom manager, do not even get close enough to rom manager to let your phone smell the apk, it may get sick.

[Q] Bricked Rezound?

I replaced my digitizer and screen a few days ago and all was working well. After turning the phone off and on a few times over a couple of days it was still working great. Then I tried to start it and got the htc splash screen and then black. I pulled the battery and booted into bootloader. It gave me several error messages looking for (I think) PH98DIAG.ZIP and not finding it. I have tried to reinstall TWERP 2.6.3.0 using fastboot usb and get a message that installation was successful, but I cant access TWERP in bootloader. I have tried FACTORY RESET with no improvement. If I start the phone and get past the htc screen, it gets warm and the battery eventually runs down, so SOMETHING is running.
I also tried to install TWERP using the adb flash_image method and my phone is not recognized. Of course both methods require usb debugging mode to be switched on and I can't get there.
I was running Infection 8.2.1 and TWERP 2.6.3.0. Rooted, S-on, bootloader unlocked (of course).
Any suggestions?
This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.

1) The looking for files and not finding any is normal.
2) What's it doing when you try to go into recovery? Just a blank screen? You may want to try installing the recovery using the PH98IMG.zip method if you have access to a card reader to get the file on your SD Card. - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1902381
Download the attached file in that thread, rename it to just PH98IMG.zip, place it on the root of your SD card and go into the bootloader, it should find the file and ask you to press volume up to install it. If it goes successful, remove the zip file then try to get into recovery from the bootloader again.

I tried that. Bootloader only searches for PH98DIAG.ZIP, doesn't find it and goes black.
@geronimo48 Are you S-Off...if so when you boot into bootloader and can access the fastboot usb from there i can give you the RUU.exe files you run in windows that factory restores your phone from the pc
My phone is S-ON. I kept it that way to make sure I wouldn't brick it .
Thanks for trying.
