[Q] [REQ] Flashable Zip to Disable Verizon Network Connection - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I travel quite a bit and use airplane mode, though I noticed when I reboot my tbolt sometimes when I have it in airplane mode it boots out of it. I am requesting a flashable zip or apk to totally wipe out cdma and lte functionality. Then I will nandroid backup when I get back. Wifi is the only connection I am looking for. I know about the apps that disable, but I am looking for something full proof. Is this possible?

Why not just go into radio settings and turn the radio off?

dissable phone signal + enable wifi possible?

Hi I was hoping someone could help me with this. The only way I can see to disable the phone signal is to turn on airplane mode, however this will obviously prevent me from then enabling wifi. Is there a way to run the handset with just wifi enabled?
erm, kinda! you can use a settings widget included in the touchflo UI to disable mobile data, but not turn the whole phone off apart from airplane mode that i know of.

haha very good.
I wanted to do something similar. That is, have all wireless turned off except for GPS (in order to preserve battery life). I put the hero in airplane mode and then turned on the GPS. Nice to know that works! Not sure why you cant use the same procedure for Wifi (but I can't either).

Will not help... you can still make emergency calls without the SIM... it won't turn off the GSM/3g radio.
does anyone know of a widget that will just toggle the phone on/off like the HTC Widgets for bluetooth, wifi etc. ?
Just found an application in the market called "Airplane Autoswitch" which apparently switches on airplane mode according to a schedule, but keeps WiFi switched on. Assuming it works, this definitely implies that you should be able to write a toggle widget to do the same thing on demand.
Regards,
Dave
An app as just been released called "airplane mode wifi" which seems to do what you are asking.

[Q] [View] Cell Standby

I have the View and will never use the cell network. When checking battery status it shows Cell Standby using 67% battery. I've searched for this, but many of the sol'ns could brick the device as they suggest renaming services. Anyone find a sol'n to disabling the cell Standby?

I do the same. Battery life went through the roof after I started using airplane mode.
I tried this but Cell Standby was still showing @ 67%. Is it just a matter of turning airplane mode on and then starting WiFi again.

Yes. Turn airplane mode on, and then turn WiFi on/off as you need it. It will take a little while (possibly a few days depending on how often you charge) for Cell Standby to completely disappear from battery use since the system calculates that based on usage since a full charge. Cell Standby doesn't even show up on mine at all since airplane mode completely turns off the cellular radios.
Just turning off mobile data isn't enough for the View. Even with mobile data off, you can still see signal bars in the notification bar/navigation bar. It's designed to be able to receive text messages as well, so short of tinkering with some of the system files or installing a custom rom, airplane mode is the easiest way of making sure there are no cellular radios active at all.

anycut to turn off radio.
Download anycut from the market. Run it and choose "new shortcut" then "activity". Scroll way down and choose "testing". This is a debugging app.
You now have a shortcut to "testing" on your home screen. Launch it and press the "turn off radio" button.
you have to turn off the radio after every reboot since rebooting turns the radio on again... but once you have the shortcut.. its easy.

I finished the GB to HC S-Off and rooted etc. Will this kill the 3G/4G radios completely so we don't have to run airplane mode? I will be only using WiFi period for my Evo View.

Yes, more info please!
This disables cellular radios without needing airplane mode?
is it reversable?
I would guess it is, likely either a new flashable file or restore your backup. Oh well this is perfect for my needs. Thanks Globaltron.
The method regarding Anycut is PERFECT! After a few hours, I can already see the improvement in battery life. Thanks again!

What with megaupload and it's brethren blasted off the internet, this link is dead...as are so many other valuable assets to the modding community... can it get re-uploaded somewhere?
And, peripherally, isn't there a better place for hacks like this than file locker sites? recipes for gadget tweaking seem un-assailably non-infringing enough, and it seems like stashing such items in github or dropbox would be a better means of sharing and collaborating...

Incidentally, if I'm not subscribed to a data plan, is there ever *ANY* reason to not have the radio turned off?
Like, for instance, does being able to see cell towers improve GPS fix time, or do you need data service to get the tower locations?

If you are using the OTA, I found that the cell modem had to be on to see the updates.
Also, the cell towers will provide location information to Google Maps & Etc. I turn it on for this purpose only, otherwise I'm on WiFi.

Can I run my fascinate on wifi only? Radio off?

I'm deploying to Afghanistan and will have my phone with me but am wondering if I can use it on wifi only. Basically airplane mode but wifi on. Not that there should be any Verizon signal there but figure it's safer to leave it like this. Are there any options? Often wondered this too for airplane flights where they offer wifi access but you don't want the cell radio on... Thanks in advance.
If you deactivate the phone Wifi will still work. There will be no connectivity to Verizon.
Enable airplane mode. Then turn on wifi.

go here: wiki.rootedwiki.com/wiki/Samsung_Fascinate
grab the stock radio and reflash it. If that doesn't work then your phone not activating might be an unrelated problem. Check the developer forum and flash back to stock.

Every droid i have i've turned into a mini media server when it was time to upgrade to a new droid. And all of them run on wifi only. To get the full benefits, you'll still need a google account. I'd also flash a 3rd party ROM. If you're not even going to be on Verizon, no reason to use their ROM with all the limitations (e.g. no free tethering, though that might not be important to you). I'd use CM7 or MIUI. If you're tied to touchwiz, there's a lot of good options too.

WIP: Stopping CDMA Radio on boot (using init.d)

Alright everyone, I'm getting annoyed and I'm hoping someone more talented than me can come here to save the day. I'm attempting to use a conditional init.d script that runs if it finds the file of my choosing (in this case, radio.sh in /system/bin) and then if it finds it, it will disable radio. What I'm having problems with is that it keeps giving me connection refused on boot when disabling radio. So, any idea?
Have you mounted your system as read/write at the beginning of the script?

I'm using radio options I shouldn't have to but I guess I'll try that

I tried a setprop command, that didnt work and I also tried "radiooptions 1"

Hey globatron,
If you remove phone.apk and telephoneyproviders.apk you no longer get cell stand by in battery usage but it breaks GPS. If I leave the files and issue the stop ril-daemon command. It turns off the radio and GPS still works but cell standby appears in battery usage. Is there a way to disable the radios completely, still have GPS work and not have cell standby in battery usage?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S II
You have to have cell standby for GPS to work, I think they are in the same chip.

I don't get what you're trying to accomplish, if youre trying to disable the CDMA radio and use wifi only like me, but want GPS, just turn on airplane mode, turn on wifi and GPS and you're set. If I'm mistaken about what you're trying to do then never mind.
Side note, leaving the CDMA radio on didn't bother me because I don't have service with my view, but it still takes from the battery of course.

Gordon, this is for a ROM. I'm looking into several options to kill it on boot simply. That's it.
I see, I I think I came across some lads in the Flyer forums either here or AC that had it working.

Here is something odd.. gps does work if you remove the stuff for cell standby. I thought it was broken (everytime I tried in my house it never locked on a signal) but it's not. I fired up navigation just now and while it did take longer to lock a signal then with the radio stuff in, it did lock and start giving me directions.. I guess the cell radios assist the gps(considerably) but are not fully responsible for it.
This is an important functionality to disable the cell radio!
I've been trying for days now - can't understand why Android doesn't simply provide a checkbox in the settings for this (like for Bluetooth or Wifi).
When people suggest airplane mode, they don't realize that this blocks the stock dialer from placing any calls.
This is really poor design on the part of the Android team: they include a sip stack (thank you!) , then force users to resort to airplane mode to disable the cell, and then block the dialer (when all a user wants is simply to use sip over wifi)...

Why would you care about the stock dialer for placing call if you turned off your radio? You ain't making any calls without the radio anyway.... I'm confused

He is using sip over WiFi, but he needs a dialer. That doesn't use the mobile radio.

sounds like it sends the command before ril is ready.
The only way I got it to work was by having "sleep 60" before the radiooptions command.
Maybe there is some trigger for ril, so the command can run once its ready. I had done a loop to check if ril-daemon is running first, but that doesn't seem to be enough (probably takes more time to load the vender RIL next)
It seems radiooptions just disables the radio, but it still uses power.
Did anybody have success in disabling the radio? I'm also looking for the way how to use View 4G abroad without Sprint.
May be it's possible to modify the firmware to make it "wifi only" - exactly as it made for the HTC Flyer?

[Q] remove or disable sprint radio?

first off, I am new both to the forums and rooting so please forgive me if this has been asked already. I did do a search for "remove sprint radio" and "disable sprint radio" and didnt see what i was looking for. maybe i am searching for the wrong thing?
my question is.. can the sprint radio be disabled or removed in my evo 3d? right now it is rooted, s-off, and has smooth criminal v2.3 rom installed. basically i want to use it in my car as an MP3, media player, GPS.. etc.. but i dont want to constantly be turning off the sprint mobile network every time it reboots. can i just remove it and forget about it? if yes, how? remember I am a noob to all this..
any help will be greatly appreciated.
