[Q] Rooting Q - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry for the basic nature of this question but I'm still learning. One thing I wanted to know is Is Clockworkmod what actually roots the device?
Thanx!

No. ClockworkMod is a utility for performing low level tasks like partitioning, formatting and flashing ROMs. Rooting isn't actually necessary for any of those tasks.

And most ROMs will have root access included, I believe..

Thanks for the replies. I'm plannin on picking up a G tab this weekend and want to be ready to mod it once I get it.

it was funny I fount this thread because this is tying in to my question.
I am not new to android, just the GTab (when I get mine on Friday).
I have use CWM on my Droid so I am familiar with it, but all other android phone devices I have dealt with, all needed Root access for CWM to work.
Since you are saying the GTab does not need root access to do the things CWM can do, can I simply do the following?
Open my gTab box,
turn it on,
download CWM, and install the vegan froyo/gingerbread rom from with the app?
Or can vegan not be downloaded/installed from CWM? If not downloaded, then atleast installed once I download to sdcard?
Thanks,
RalphTrent

I found this quote in a sticky posted above. It may answer your question.
"You do NOT need to root your tablet to install a ROM on this device using this guide. All the after-market ROMs come pre-rooted so you don't need to root after installing either. "
If you watch any of the tutorials on youtube, they are basically installing clockworkmod and then a ROM. Of course there are several important steps, but this is the gist, as I understand it.

[Q] I want to root for 1st time ever, but I have a Mac

I am here today because I need help. I want to root for 1st time ever, but I have a Mac. I hear about all of the great things I can do with my Vibrant after rooting but I am scared of trying this without a PC. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Also lead me to the best roms. Thank you.
Well my first suggestion would be to get a PC
But seriously, you could always get a copy of XP somewhere (pretty easy to get for free), or a later Windows OS and dual-boot your system.
Or you could just dl Ryanza's lag fix from the market and root it that way.
You do not need a pc.
Download the file to your phone, put it on the root sdcard/ and go into stock recovery and flash it.
Afterwards, get rom manager and make a backup.
Flash a rom, bionix or eugene's
This is all in the general section sticky I made. EVERYTHING you need is there.

Take a look at this post. I would recommend you pull the latest version, su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip, from this thread instead of "SGH-959 Root Update.zip" from the 1st link.

I have taken your advice but my phone has only installed the Superuser app. I am scared that if I do anything else I will brick my phone. Is there a way to unroot it? I would like to try rooting again with the non PC version. Thank you
Download rom manager
Flash clockwork recovery
make a nandroid backup.
Now you have something you can always revert to.

Yes sir, that's exactly what you should have after successfully completing the process. To unroot from your device take a look here. View the Full thread (Page 1) to perform via adb. I don't see any reason you need to worry yourself about bricking. Unless your planning on testing kernels, ROMs, etc... If that's the case, make sure you read the entire thread before you make any decisions, and ask questions as it seems that most everyone here is willing to lend a hand.
search ryanza on market place. download the free version you can root and unroot from there simple instructions very easy to understand.
download rom manager (it auto installs superuser also) from market place also free download. that will allow you to make backups and restore should you encounter any problems.
also if your running OSX you can dual boot from Bootcamp windows, and if your running atleast a core 2 duo system you can dual boot windows 7/Vista 64bit.
A pc is needed for almost no modification when it comes to this phone.
I had to put effort into bricking my phone so you should be fine, just make sure if you have installed the OTA that any themes you install support the JI6 update. thats the only way i bricked my phone lol, and again that was a easy fix. Read read read so much to learn.
Thank you everyone for your help. I have succesfully rooted my phone. I think I will wait for the 2.2 OTA update since I hear that they are slowing coming around for the galaxy S phones. I want to try the bionix rom but I do not want to install it to soon and miss out on my chance to get the OTA update.

[Q] Kuno tablet

I recently received a Kuno Tablet. It has the same physical characteristics as the 10.1 except for the lack of a hdmi out. Its running android 2.3.1 with a 1.2ghz processor. I have been trying to find some way to root this tablet for a few days now and have had no luck whatsoever. As far as I know no one else has even attempted to root one of these. Help of any kind would be appreciated and I will do my best to answer any questions. I am considering trying petes root tools or gingerbreak but i have my doubts that this will work. I have tried to put the device into some sort of recovery mode but have had no luck so far with any of the button combinations I tried.
Hi xsurferx,
the Kuno really looks like the Archos 101... the chinese engineers are incredible.
Under the hood there's different hardware working.
The manufacturers website mentions a [email protected]
http://mykuno.com/kuno-specs.html
Due to this fact there's nothing in common with the way Archos created the firmware on the A101 and the way you could root this device.
You could try to find out how the firmware looks like on your Kuno... but i guess this is not the right place to discuss these things.
Anyway, good luck!

Progress
Any progress on trying to root the Kuno tablet? Superoneclick says that it roots it successfully but Superuser does not get installed. Is there at least a way to flash Gapps onto it? I can't even set up a gmail account unless I use the IMAP settings
super one clicks havent worked for me yet either however, i do work for the high school that i attend on their tablets and anything else they need done, through contact with the company that created the tablets ive learned that the tablet does not have a recovery mode and that the tablets actually have to be imaged like a computer would. So once i get my hands on an image i should be able to modify it to allow root access. If that fails im going to try rooting it through adb and installing superuser that way as well
what shcool has the funds to buy tablets like that?
So you just help them>?
lots of them
Many schools are going to one to one devices to try and help students learn and while they are expensive most of it is payed for by grants and other funds. I do anything they need from pc to mac and android. The tablets will be given out to freshman this coming semester and they want to see just how locked down these are and im assuming that rooting them will be the first step to unlocking them from the cirruculumloft software they are using. They want to see how to unlock them so they can prevent it in the future. Which is where i come in.
Status...
The kuno tablet has a recovery system that can only be accessed by flashing a new firmware to it, however, it is not possible to get this firmware without getting it from the company that made the tablet. So...in order to root the tablet you have to create a custom firmware from scratch for the tablet because the firmware on the tablet was designed in such a way that the android market can not run on it. The company removed the directories and other items the market needs to run. You can not connect the tablet through adb, nor can you install from SD or even access the SD card from inside the firmware the tablets are currently running. In order to root this tablet we would need to create a custom firmware and then flash it onto the tablet. Anyone interested in trying? Also, super one clicks will brick the device, I'm surprised yours still worked after that.
new discoveries
The market will run on the tablet, i was lied to on that one. The tablet connects through adb very easily and most commands work in adb. unfortunately you can not reboot into recovery or the boot loader through adb
unrevoked won't find my tablet. what do i do now?
this
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=unrevoked+won't+find+my+kuno+tablet,+What+now?
I work for a company that will be selling these Kuno tablets to schools. A CurriculumLoft Employee told me these tablets are not approved by Google so that makes them not able to use the android market. I have found that these can use the Amazon App market.
Figured it out!!!
After working on this for the better part of 6 months i have finally achieved root and flashed a custom rom with CWM recovery installed. I found that the Kuno tablet is essentially the same as the Arnova 10 G2 tablet with the exception of hard drive size. Here is the link to the site and instructions i used to flash the rom. If any one has any questions let me know.

Droid X2 Custom Rom Without Wifi?

Hello all,
I have a Droid X2, running 2.3.4.
Currently, the phone is acting very buggy, randomly shutting off, and the wifi won't turn on.
I am attempting to install a new rom on it to see if this fixes the issues, but I am running into great difficulty without the wifi ability.
I am using the method of installing the apk via adb and the command prompt
Installed all the necessary drivers, SDK manager, etc., downloaded the rom manager lite apk, and attempted to install it to the phone, but when I run the command prompt, it comes back access denied, in that I don't have permission to install it. Is there any way around this, or how to to grant it permission?
My end goal is to throw a new rom on the phone to see if it fixes the issues.
Thank you!
I dont understand the method you are trying to use to get a ROM on your device. What apk are you trying to install? You need to root your device before anything. Follow the directions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315711
Once you are successful with that, you can choose a ROM and install it with bootstrap recovery. Get your phone rooted first though and then we will take it from there.
Alright, well first problem is that ROM Manager does not work for our phone. You can only use the DX2 bootstrap (or modified BSR if you're on CM7) to get into the custom recovery. I'd recommend downloading that and storing it somewhere on your SD card, though most ROMs now have it baked in some older versions may not.
BUT, before you can do this, you must have your phone rooted. Since you are getting permission errors, it would appear you're just trying this all on stock 2.3.4, so I'd recommend reading Moon Shadow's guide on rooting.
After you have rooted your phone and installed the BSR you can delve into installing custom roms. As long as you have a computer with internet access and a usb cable you can just download the rom onto your phone and transfer it to your phone's SD card, no need to use ADB to push it. It's also recommended you make a nandroid backup before you install any ROMs/mods.
TL;DR - ROM Manager does not work for the Droid X2. Need to root it, then install the DX2 BSR before any ROMs can be installed.
PS - For future reference, questions like these would be best placed in the Q&A section.
Thread moved. Please post questions in Q&A forums.
Thanks...
Thank you,
I will definitely look into the guide.
Sorry for the elementary stupidity of my question.

Yeah, just read the guides and you'll be fine. Start with rooting your device and any other questions you have, we will try to do our best to answer them. Android is a lot different than iOS so everything you knew about that then forget it. lol

We got another one!!
**** yea!
You were kickin it hardcore going into command prompt and trying to load everything. I've never heard of that being done. We have a couple people around here that are great at reconfiguring permissions. Moon and a couple others are great at it. But there are much easier ways of flashing roms and solving some problems. But whatever floats your boat man, if you can work everything through Prompt then more power to you.

[Q] rooted with SuperOneClick, can I still reinstall phone back to stock?

I recently rooted my T-mobile 4G Samsung Galaxy S with SuperOneClick, but I think I have decided that root is way too advanced for me. I have not installed any ROMs since rooting, is it still possible for me to reinstall Android back to the stock version safely, or has my device been permanently modified??
For those unaware of SuperOneClick, installing it did not require me to lose any data on the phone to root, which was pretty nice. I like being rooted, my inner geek lusted for it, but I have a feeling it's just not for me. Perhaps if I learned a little more about ROMs, I may go that route. Either way, I want to reinstall Android and start over.
Please respond.

An easier way to do it is to install SuperSU from the market and do full unroot in settings
Thanks guys, I will definitely look into those options. If I went in the root direction, could I possibly reformat the entire phone including the SD card? I have nothing on there worth keeping and want a clean slate to start from, the phone is currently running at super slow speeds.

yes try twrp or cwm with that format system dalvik cache, cache data or anything you want
then flash your stock rom using odin

Using the XDA wiki I found here, I think I've decided I am going to attempt to install a custom ROM.
I'm already rooted w/SuperOneClick, and am still on stock Gingerbread 2.3.6. This would be classified as BLM, correct?
If I am following this wiki correctly, I am at the step of installing a kernel to obtain ClockworkMod Recovery. I did some looking around between the two choices listed, Basic With A Twist and Blast-Off!. The XDA wiki suggests that All custom kernels for this device have CWM Recovery preinstalled, but I cannot seem to verify this. I'd hate to fool around with either of the two if I cannot obtain ClockworkMod Recovery.

if the kernel is integrated with cwm then t should be listed in the features so you can be sure about cwm

Wiped OS on HTC One X+

So guys, I'm new to this and thought I would jump in at the deep end.
I unlocked my HTC One X+ easily and set about rooting.
I've got TWRP installed but it keeps telling me it needs to install superuser before it can root.
I have totally wiped the phone, how come if Im not rooted?
How do I get an OS and indeed the kernel or ROM onto the phone?
Its and International OX+, I've got the right kernel... what do I need to do?
It was locked to O2 if that makes a difference
I followed the instruction in Hasson but then wiped the OS
I know its a simple procedure but can someone walk me through it please
So I've downloaded Kernel 3.1.10-ge7581e4
I have no idea what to do next, come on guys I know its not difficult for you guys.

If you wiped as you said, you need to push with adb a rom of your choice to the internal memory of the phone and then install it within twrp.
Please read instructions 2 or 3 times before attempting anything, seems like you rushed and now you're temporarily without phone till you flash a rom on it again. I doubt any root guide tells you to wipe the phone, your own fault on this.
To sum it up:
Put a rom's zip of your choice in the internal memory with adb push
flash the rom within the twrp recovery (install option)
flash the kernel for the specific rom with fastboot (each rom has a guide and download for it)
You can now search about it more easily, plenty of posts and info about this.

Thanks, I did indeed rush into it but I have been meaning to do it for a year and just thought go for it, I know its all salvageable..ish!
So yep, I've got the ROM I want but don't understand the kernel, I see no guide to download it, all I know is I took a note of the Kernel before I wiped my phone and I have managed to find the exact kernel.
The ROM or RUU as it is, is an O2 UK version, I figure it must be the one I want as it was an O2 phone in the UK.
I still don't know what folders to put things in, TWRP can't see a boot.img that I have on the phone when installing, it can only see it through file explorer.
And then, every time I power down the phone TWRP asks to install Superuser, its cant, theres nothing to install it to, so it just keeps asking.
This is all because I hated the Sense 5 update, indeed Im till looking for the Sense 4 ROM fo HOX+

Sigh, if you had read carefully you'd know that boot.img need to be flashed through fastboot and not from recovery. Every rom has this info or a batch file for this.
So what exactly are you trying to do? Root the stock rom that came originally with the phone or installing a custom rom?

Lols, thanks dan, I hope you don't hate me!
Root the stock ROM
For starters..
The boot.img is the Android Revolution HD
The RUU is O2 UK
I do realise they are two different ways of installing an OS, I would just like one of them to work!
So think install RUU, then kernel
But put them where and how
I bought the Android Hackers book, but theres nothing about HOX+ in it, and seeing as that's the only phone, I've got to practise on I thought I would ask you specifically.

I see, the easiest ways would be to use a custom rom now. For example, the one you already got the kernel from(android revolution hd)
To root you dont need to install a kernel... just to flash the supersu zip. Using a custom rom's kernel with stock rom might not be a good idea.
Another simple way would be to restore stock rom back to start and try rooting again, this time reading everything carefully
So the two easiest ways i think:
1) flash a custom rom following the instructions they provide in the initial posts for that rom
2) run the o2 correspondent RUU to restore stock rom (you'd need to relock the bootloader), also reading carefully posts in the forum about restoring to stock
Without getting into too much detail, these are the simplest options.
All the info required to do these are on these forums
Aaarrghhh, its driving me insane as I knew it would, just like XP, Vista Seven and Eight!!!
So Im back to being up all night learning..
Well have installed SDK correctly but device is not seen, no serial, nothing.
I can get it to fastboot though, however I don't know any commands so I cant get it to work
Windows 7 keeps moaning about an mpt file which I downloaded and dont know where to extract it to
All I need to do is copy a few files to the phones sd card and install them right?
Whys that so difficult?
I don't know the difference between a rom an ruu and a boot image, in that I don't know where they should all be placed.
Why cant twrp copy and paste from pc...
So Hassooon works sort of but still none the wiser.
Am following tutorial but fastboot commands are not working
Still cant find right driver.....
So CMD lines not working 100%
So am downloading drivers in sdk manager
And how do I flash the supersu zip?
Still no luck with driver, im on windows 7 32bit
OK I cant push using adb it cant find the file or directory,
Hassooon cant detect the phone as cant windroid universal
I dont think the phone is rooted even though i have twrp on it.
Thus can I have wiped the os?
If not can i restore it?
No I didnt make a backup rom..
mmm a zip on the phone doesnt load in bootloader, count that be my os?
Guys, im stranded in the water here...
On boot im getting...
Failed to open usb master mode
[Preload] Failed to open usb master mode
loading PM35IMG.zip image...
Failed to open usb master mode
please plug off usb
Whats PM35IMG.zip?
Is that the OS?
Am I saved?
Is it easy to get that file to unzip and load?
Can anyone help?
So now I need the right RUU.....
2.17.206.3
Is there anyone out there that can help please?
So have managed to install superuser and root my phone, all instructions for doing this were wrong including Hassoon, had to have the phone in System screen to do it, not bootloader or recovery.
Now cant get adb to push file to sdcard...
Man alive, how to make something very easy, sound very difficult.
Would any of you experts care to help?
Just trying to install a ROM.zip to Root and place the boot img in right place.
Well, the instructions are dire but after 10 days of persistance have installed Android Revolution HD 8, finally my phone is up and running better than the bloated os that came with the phone so, you can call this thread resolved.
