Hey,
Will the brand new firmware from archos included in urukdroid?
This is the biggest firmware update since the eclair/froyo switch
i would love to use my 101 as remote control for my tv ( i know its big ) (this is new in the 2.3.20 firmware )
Hope sauron and his guys include it in the 1.0 version of urukdroid this would be an giant improvement of archos tablets
I Don't think it will be on UrukDroid 1.0 because it is already in beta stage. And the source code isn't out yet for this release, so no one can modify it until then.

Hmm..okey
but do you know if archos will delease the source code?
Or they will be make a closed source like google
They are forced to release it, and it seems like they will release it today ($auron say it there : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=908744&page=90
And Google don't close the source, they don't release it yet because they can't be run on phones, and if they release the source some ROM will be made of it, and that's bad for the android user experience. They'll release it when it could run anywhere
@Lennb:
You should really upgrade your english skills, so that you not allways get the informations wrong.
@eagleofdeath13:
Archis is forced to release the Kernel sources but not their own extensions, so $auron will have to copy those other things.
And as the Medialibrary format is changed there will be no real coexistence unless he copies their stuff but he should avoid to copy the wifi stack, as this is broken.

i'm just wondering if we get the "new" "old" 2.6.29 kernel sources. i guess we do.
and the rest is closed, they will repair a few bugs and introduce a few new ones ;-)

;D that's right... english lessons in german schools are just bad and slow...
i guess i learned more in self study than in the six or so years i had english in school (playing metal gear solid a billion times helped too )...
too bad smart.fm is gone now...
well, atleast i got my iknow for japanese
for the sake of the topic:
i found the new firmware to be the by far best to date.
never had the eclair firmwares though...
ADW ex is FINALLY working smoothly now, even though there 's no overclock or root at the moment...
i could be wrong, but it feel smoother than urukdroid now. Too bad i couldn't use urukdroid at all, since it crashed my 101 after a while every time i tried it...
Yeah! This update is really faster! I don't know how it's possible but WOW! Amazing! XD

Since I run Linux systems at home I'm really interested in running it on my phones too. I kinda ordered my new phone since my TYTN is falling apart (does not synch thru USB anymore) so I can wait till late november for HTC to release their phone on Android.
So, do you think HTC will make an Android ROM for the Raphael? (or is there a big probability someone will cook it from another ROM)
I don't think they will do such a Android-ROM for Touch Pro as they will try to sell their new Android-Device. But since the Touch Pro has this Qualcomm-CPU, I hope Android will run on it - Again, made by some community-member, not HTC.
would somebody like to try booting linux on the raphael? I wonder if things will behave in the same way as on the diamond ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402002 )
in that thread, marbalon posted http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=104265&d=1218018832 a package with latest haret and a build for the halibut machine from the google git.
also you can replace the zImage in the diamond.zip with the zImage builds for vogue from dzo: for example http://it029000.massey.ac.nz/vogue/zImage
or try the kaiser kernel http://linuxtogo.org/~lgorris/kaiser-bootkit/zImage.bin
and report what happens. does haret get further than go go go? Which machine does it detect?
thanks
can a moderator move this to raphael rom development please?
I tried the bootkit for Diamond, the latest builds for the kaiser from igorris and also the latest build for vogue - but all hang up.
i will investigate a bit....
do they hang at 100% / Go Go Go? Do you see console output?

Done... and good luck!
As i wrote last time, i didn´t get running the kernel for Kaiser (Latest Build) and Vogue (Latest Build).
Now it seems that the problem is or at least could be related to the storage card. It´s a common problem that sdhc-cards over 4gb won´t work as a android drive. so maybe anyone can try it with a card that fit the needs - i have only a 8gb model?
Good Luck and post every result!
I have tried vogue version on my raphael but it hangs on booting linux... 100% and i it hangs every time.
files are on phone not on sd card.

We need the G1 kernel source, and modules (if there would be some closed-source drivers). I have documented many (most?) MSM gpios,
the DRAM config is known too. I'm researching the Hitachi LCD setup
because G1 has a different panel, so it will be necessary to modify
the init/suspend routines.

Totally agree.
wm is the best mobile os at the moment unfortunately (if android is not counted), nokia's symbian just plainly.. eh, stinks. and so on.
Android would be really nice, waiting for it to raphael, even as a flashable rom! That would be so awesome! (we dont need WM to flash, it works straight from the bootloader, so why not!)

You hit my point of view!
Since SDE was released, who wants to build some fresh and shiny android which might be running someday side by side with AVOS (Archos Android)?
What do we need (openembedded?)?
Installation of Other OS:
root: /mnt/storage/rootfs.img
kernel:
Reboot into Recovery Mode (howto)
Recovery System -> Developer Edition Menu -> Flash Kernel and Initramfs
Connect USB and copy "zImage" and "initramfs.cpio.gz" to the Archos
Unmount Archos on PC (safe remove)
Press ok on Archos
Don't you think dev's are already working on this right now?
OpenAS is a site to look at, there are a few in fact and some even on XDA.
your instructions are sort of nothing anyone who has booted the angstrom distribution can see that?
this thread is a bit pointless. your asking for devs to create something they are already working on and you can't help as you don't know how?
no, you just missed the point. I AM (or want to be) a dev, see my other thread about dvb-t support
and now I'm looking for some help and informations.
this thread should be dedicated to building gen8 android (2.2 / 2.3 / ...) roms, I don't care much about angstrom.
I'm not one of those annoying guys who just complaining about others work, I want to get my hands dirty and do some work! I already checked openaos out, there a lot of informations about gen6 and gen7 but not gen8, this is why I started this thread here.
summarizing informations, that's the point.
ok fair enough
it's more likely though someone will do a port and use it over the current android system as apposed to using the SDE. Most dev's will be concentrating on other O/S's such as Ubuntu etc.
I can see why you want to do it but im not sure it will be done this way. We havent even managed to get perm root yet, sadly the archos wont get a lot of love I fear.
we have perm root, just use SDE and put an android in it we can decide everything
edit: either you hack the gen8 and get rid of SDE and archos' android and put whatever you want on it or you stay with SDE and dual boot (sounds a less "brickable" choice to me)

But it's pointless having android 2.2 / 2.3 running alongside android 2.2 / 2.3
it would be a complete waste of time especially as archos are currently working on it anyway.
It would achieve nothing, the SDE would be much better used running ubuntu/winxp or other, running android as a secondary boot option is a waste of development time and I cant see anyone wanting to do it?
by all means join in getting a good distro to run but not another version of android when all we are missing is root anyway. I think your getting confused as to what SDE is used for.
why would someone want to run ubuntu on this hardware? winxp is out of scope as it doesn't support arm processors.

why shouldn't we have root in SDE?? The SDE is the only way (so far, gen8 hasn't been hacked yet) to get perm root and custom roms.
why won't you just use SDE to run custom android roms? why it has to be ubuntu or any other bloated linux distribution?

no it's not, because archos won't let us do customizations. it would be easy for archos to let us perm root everything but they won't. so what are you going to do to make android comfortablier and less buggy on gen8? a) hack it and flash custom roms and may brick it or b) use sde and flash custom roms without the possibility to brick it

Agreed, who cares if you have more then one build of Android on a device? On other devices people have developed their own method of doing this exact thing. SDE is a great idea to let people load custom ROMs onto their device without fear of bricking. Now if someone would just get one developed....

Archos have released the source code, the only thing that's missing is Root.
The distro is already pretty close to stock even the BT stack is android native allowing us to use wiimote etc.
Archos have done a pretty "pure" android release Cynogen's goal is get a pure android rom working. Stock it's not that far away now?
and what about ISO, windows 7 (mobile), tiny linux, yellow dog, many other great distro's. All im saying is wait until root is achieved (it's being worked on) nd see what happens to the default android then.
Your may be jumping the gun a bit developing something that's not needed

was agreeing with you until this post.
the point is that Archos have up until now done a bit of a shoddy job of their Android builds. We all want the archos tablet running smoothly and as best we can and also would like to have 2.3+ on our devices which is probably unlikely by any official means.
and saying archos are "currently working on it" is a little silly given what forum you are on! (whats the point in people making custom roms for HTC devices... HTC are working on it anyway?!)
@wazalotofzeros
oh come on, are you kidding me? why is it so hard to understand that a rooted android or even custom roms are wanted by a lot of archos users (see archosfans.com)
whats the point of installing any linux distribution instead of android?
why are you telling me its pointless to do custom roms for the Archos Gen8 while there are custom roms for a lot of other android devices?
I give up, please contribute something useful to this topic or stop posting offtopic.
@waz000000,
don't want to participate in this then don't. There is no reason to put down others work though just because you think it is pointless.
Grand Idea
Personally I think this is a grand idea. At first when I saw the SDE I thought that was its whole purpose and that archos would start us off with a basic android version. But when it was released and it came with a barely working linux distro, it turned me off to installing SDE until something better can happen. I wouldn't mind seeing a micro version of ubuntu running on this, but the main problem is going to be the ram. If we are having issues with the ram on android what makes you think we will have better luck on a OS that wasn't intended to run on the archos. But hey more power to you. But on the other hand if we can build our own android firmwares, then we won't be dependent on Archos to decide whether or not to update to the next firmware. And saying Archos is working on it is like saying well the end of the world is coming. When IDK, but its coming!
Seriously. The delayed the launch by 2 months and then didn't deliver on their promise of launching with 2.2. They did come through, but with the crappiest 2.2 firmware I have ever used. Constant crashing, no wifi N, 200 mhz decrease in speed, and only a promise to fix it... eventually.
So the the OP. Go for it. I will help with what I can, but I haven't build a firmware yet except for the easy cook it yourself ones.

ok fair enough so what would you rather?
a cynogen mod with archos firmware or linux distro (Whatever) and cynogenmod?
im not saying dont work on a custom rom, im saying work on a "proper" custom rom and use the dual boot option for something other than android.
1st step develop root
2nd step develop custom rom
3rd step install another distro
What im trying to say is, develop a "proper" custom rom and leave the dual boot option for something mind blowing!
as to blazingwolf im not trying to put anyone's work down (apart from the fact there isn't any yet this is pure concept)

the purpose of SDE is to give users a way to dual boot and be able to load "another" operating system. The Angstrom image we provide is just a demo and nothing else. You are free to put anything else, like Android 4.0, Meego, Maemo or whatever else you want...
Given that Droid X has similar architecture to Archos Gen 8, is anyone brave enough to try loading the new Droid X gingerbread rom on their gen 8 device?
Im not a dev, but i know that our gen8 tabs touchscreens is hosted by an inside usb port - and this is the problem i think the gb source code is not released, is it?
We have to change the source code that our touchscreen works probably.
This is why we haven't a hc port. Licuende have tried that but the touchscreen doesnt work.
GB source code is released, HC is the missing one.

Because then you lose all multimedia capabilities from archos (all avos binaries are closed source). So what benefit from gingerbread would justify the loss of the multimedia capabilities which makes the archos tables so unique.
Honeycomb is another story again

After $uaron has finished his 1.0 release of Urukdroid he should have definitely have a look at trying to get gingerbread running on Gen 8 devices. It's probo;y more of a reachable goal than getting Honeycomb work, and it would probably run faster then both Froyo and Honeycomb.

Thanks for this infos
Even if you english is not that good, you shold at least try to read the stuff yourself first.
$auron stated that the freezing problem is because the released kernel sources have errors and are not equal to the 2.1.08.
So he contacted NZ ( employee of Archos ) and got the notice that there will be some new gpl sources out maybe next week.

is there other firmware to upgrade gen8 archos rather than upgrading to urukdroid or stock gen8 os?
Hey,
You could upgrade to other firmware, but none of theme would work propably
there are:
-->Kubuntu Mobile
-->Honeycomb
-->Ubuntu
-->Urukdroid
-->Stock Os
_____
Red - Very early developement stage / not many tests
Green - High (>4/5 months) developement stage / many tests
So other Os's maybe work in future but at this time theres only one really good:
Urukdroid
Try it
Moved as not android development.

I would like to use it and make a new rom if it exist ^^
I don't know if you read the news, that Notion Ink will release and already have released a beta of their Android 2.3.4 for their Adam device..
I have tested it, since its basically based on the 2.6.32.9 kernel we all got, and not the latest nvidia 2.6.36.3 which it should be
anyways its not worth porting at this stage, its unstable and its basically using all the apps from the adam device which i find less interesting after trying the hc 3.0 launcher and widget use, i am not going back to 2.2 soon.
but so you .. i tested it and there is nothing interesting about it.
DerArtem's cm7 release is probably much,much better..

I know that you can do it, but I ask you to tell what you change when you port(usually things, not specific), what files do you add, delete, change and what you must change to ported system work(Guide, HowTo or shortly explain) ?

thats no task to explain in a thread..
its all about knowledge and understanding the os, how android loads, and works in general and the more you change, the more you learn..
so "learn by doing" is not = you know i can do it, but a saying when you need to learn how to work with something and its DIY mostly.
I want to learn. Do you know good sites, books or how and from what did you learn?
