[Q] To x10 or not to X10 :) - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody!
Currently I'm using good old HTC Diamond which works great for me, but it's definitely time to change it
For now, my options are X10 and Desire. I have read many articles and threads online, and I realize that Desire is better for custom roms because of cracked bootloader, but as I have realized it was recently cracked for for X10.
Few years ago, I was trying many roms on my Diamond, but I'm using the same one for 2 years now What I want to say is that I like new stuff, but functionality is much more important for me! I'd like to have 2.3 or at least 2.2 Android, where everything works ok.
Important functions: Camera, Multitouch, GPS, WiFi, Vibration
No that important: BT, Camcorder
Desire is ~50EUR more expensive than X10.
Now my question is, should i buy X10 or not?
Is it now possible to have 2.3 with all functions (important for me) working ok (and if not is this possible with 2.2)?
I know that this is a dumb question, but how possible is that it will support Android 3.x?
Would you recommend it to me, or I should go for Desire?
Thanks in advance for your answers. Sorry for some dumb questions, but I'm a bit confused reading all the treads because things are a bit different than with WM6.

as for your questions, on android 2.2 almost everything works like a charm.
on android 2.3 its stable but no camera for now, and still some bugs that need to be sorted out.
As for android 3.x i dont think it will be available for X10 because its the tablet version of android, if i remember correct the next phone version will be 2.4 have no idea about release dates or anything.

Xperia X10 Quesstion

Noob here. Long time on XDA, beginner in Android.
I haven't looked much here nor read much because this came up just today and don't have much time (so please don't bash, rather help me, thank you).
I have been looking forward to switch to Android but have not found a good priced phone within my price range. Today I stumbled across an Xperia X10 and I don't want it to slip away as within my price range.
Did a few readings on specs and it comes with Android 1.6.
Is the Xperia X10 upgradable to 2.1 or 2.2 Froyo(soon)?
Thank you for you help.

Devs are working on custom bootloader and seem to be making good progress, currently the answer is no, but soon hopefully custom roms will be out.
Also Sony Ericsson will be releasing 2.1 by September
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Thank you NightSide for the quick reply.
Yes, I did read that in Q4, Sony will release 2.1 for all X10 series. But I thought that has something to do with the UI sony has.
However, there's something I don't get. Most 1GHz Android devices in the market will have upgrades to 2.2 Froyo in OCT and NOV. Why won't X10 as well.
One more very important question that I missed. Does the X10 have Multitouch? or will it be enable when 2.1 is available? Pinch to zoom, rotate etc.. Very important for me
I hate to say it, but if you are indieed a long time on XDA, then you'd know to search first... All your questions have been debated in the forum a number of times...

When I opened the thread, I didnt have time to search. I NEEDED IMMEDIATE RESPONSE, which i got, thank you NightSide.
I do know NOW that X10 does not support multi touch, but had heard and read rumors that maybe on 2.1, x10 might get multitouch. And if not, a skilled member would find a way as already one of our members found a way for dual touch on a few phones (I know it works on TP2).
And it wouldn't have hurt my friend, to be nice and answer few of my questions. After all, we are here to help and I did say in my first post why I couldn't search.

Yup... you're right on that. Just rumors...
I thought it was confirmed that X10 would not be able to support DT or MT at all as it ain't just the s/w part but rather the h/w plays a role as well. And X10 don't have the h/w to do so... this is what I read... could be wrong.
Nonetheless, this is still a great phone for me. Sure there are 'flaws' here and there but nothing major. 'Upgraded' from X1... and not regretting it...
If you have a deal that fits your budget.... (if I were you) go get it...

Agreed, however you will find (if you search) that the answers to your questions are both yes and no... all you're really starting is another thread debating whether multitouch is or is not possible, and whether SE will go to 2.2 in the near future.
That aside, 2.1 is confirmed for Q4 - the rest, rumours, speculation, debate... but apart from that...

I remember reading from some dev thread that there indeed are drivers for multitouch in the kernel, but they are disabled or something. I'm pretty sure it will be investigated after we get custom roms etc.
Also note that the update to 2.1 is scheduled for Q3 not Q4, so it's coming earlier than you initially thought. There is however another update coming to enhance the SE UXP or whatever ie Timescape and Mediascape, that is scheduled for Q4 and is supposed to bring 720p video recording as well as media broadcasting on your TV...something like that.

MT/DT .. rumors.
We need custom roms to verify if it can be enabled by 3rd party but no custom roms yet.
Until then, if you don't want to be disappointed, consider that X10 doesn't have it.
2.1 was delayed it seems to Q4, i've read it on SE blog.
Some examples of user benefits that will be included in the UXP upgrade for Xperia™ X10 in Q4 2010 are:
- Upgrade to Android OS version 2.1
- HD video recording as per the same execution as Sony Ericsson Vivaz™
- Wireless home connectivity via DLNA
- Improvements to signature applications Timescape™ and Mediascape to make them even smarter and richer
The upgrade will be made available to consumers through the update service at www.sonyericsson.com

I also took the plunge on Andriod> I've been a long time HTC HD user using custom rom and it came to a point where i needed an upgrade. Choose x10 because of its hardware potential even though most reviews commented on laggy screen response, i need not worry because i know the excellent chefs here are more than capable of turning this phone into something special

Gingerbread Dev for X10

Hi , lot of developper Jerpelea , Zdzihu & TripNRaVeRs and i dont forget Binary & Maxrfon & goroh "
try hardly to put custom rom for our X10 ,
strategy : why focusing on 2.2 or 2.1 AOSP : 2.3.1 is more attractive we have a lot of delay stop viewing the past :
Synergy : each developer work hard but alone "not enough fast" maybe the creation of one Dev-team & one project " avoid the personal conflicts" is a better way to escape from SE Curse they develop 2.1 and 2.2 is already in the Market
PS: i am very proud by our Devs , I only think that 1+1+1+1 ..... is better than BIG One
its a democracy but consensus is better
+1
agree with u , all of them are proffisor alone but if thy work together we don`t know what they can do !
I support your initiative. I would love to have ONE great ROM (with full hardware support) rather than several "half implemented" ROMs like we have today.
IMO most developers here prefer to work alone (don't know if it's related to donations...), but it's really easy to see that if all of them join a single project we would definetly have a better and more optimized ROM.
One good thing is that Google seems to slow down the new major releases to two a year, so our developers will also have more time to debug and keep up.
I can only assume that they have put a lot of time looking at and understanding how the previous versions run, now they have an understanding they are putting it to good use and developing us a custom rom free of charge. To inhance our phones
I dare say they are probably looking at the gingerbread stuff now but you can only you can only do what you can do, there is no point stopping a development everytime new software came out because that way you would never have anything finished.
Patience is key, these guys do have lives, there is a order to everything and just because you dont understand it doesnt mean it is wrong
the dev's are amazing and i wish i had the knowledge to help more, icecream is coming out in the summer will the devs be expected to down tools and move on from gingerbread then?
just be patient and let the devs do their magic
My (limited) understanding is that since the bootloader is still locked, they are developing these custom ROMs on the existing 2.1 kernel that SE has put out for the X10. That means that certain core components are Android 2.1, and can't be replaced without bootloader access.
As such, it makes sense that the further an OS version is from 2.1, the more likely it is that it will require specific features not available in the 2.1 kernel.
So developing stock 2.1 for the X10 would be easiest, 2.2 would be more difficult, 2.3 even moreso, and so on.
maybe its true but developing 2.1 AOSP or 2.1 with sense take a ot of time and confir the stupid idea from SE Eclair 2.1 plus SE soft is better than Froyo ,
Creating a team will reduce time of developement and may be improve the quality of the rom build , my idea it just to say that and unify the X10 community in supporting one effective project thant wasting a lot of creativity & effort in incomplete work its easy to say the difficulty is to DOING the Job
Just a little bit of insight here from someone who isn't a developer of ROMS....
I agree that combining their efforts would most likely give us better results with regards to hardware. Here's what I think may be happening. Now that they're able to create functioning ROMs, they're each taking the time to hammer out their skills. When you learn something new, you generally spend your time redoing the same thing over and over until you've got it down pat.
That being said, they're each learning more and more as they attempt new ROMs. I think once the fascination of "Hey I got a working port of *this* ROM first!" wears off, maybe they'll work together to create a fully functioning ROM. Who knows, one of them may actually sit still for a moment and finish up one of their own ROMs.
I hope that all of the developers working on different ROMs at the very least keep a line of communication open between them so as to share fixes and work arounds.

Yes! I Agree With You!!!!

I love all the dev here, but i too just don't get it..
either i get a working camera or working wifi ? Come ON...
i hope you guys see this posts as friendly talk, we are so lucky that we have all of you here you all understand the need of one functional AOSP Rom 2.2, 2.3 whatever
I feel the same way maybe the devs should team up and create a monster ROM that works.
I agree. It's been proven time and time again, teams work better than individuals. Please unite Devs! Think of what could be accomplished
I havn't even tested a ROM yet since their all incomplete, simple as that.
All the different ideas and "wishes" posted on this thread are of course appealing but until the bootloader is cracked it's practically impossible to have a fully working ROM on any other version other than the 2.1, at least from a short term perspective.
Correct me if im wrong, but from my understanding they started to work with 2.1 just to make it simpler to mod the code to 2.2 later.
The reason is that SE have released some code for 2.1, but of course not for 2.2. So they used SEs 2.1 code to develop the 2.1 AOSP rom. And could therefore much easier convert the code to 2.2.
It seems like you guys haven't been paying attention to dev work for the x10. Maybe it's because you didn't lurk the sub-forum since the beginning or maybe you don't understand what the devs are actually doing.
The devs ARE working together. jerpelea, zdzidu, bin4ry, goro-kun, maxfron, and many others DO communicate.
What one person said about having 2.2+ functions are strictly related to the kernal and bootloaders is the final word. Sony implemented special drivers for the camera and video decoding.
Until someone writes the drivers from scratch AND unlock the bootloader, we will have less than 100% functioning 2.2+ roms.
on that 2.3.1 HTC rom camera is working ... if they can get the BT and Wifi working it will be awesome . but i have a question . will we get the (MT) on these roms after SE release? i mean for 2.2 and 2.3

The htc rom mentioned by you is 2.1. That thread is for 2 roms. 2.1 htc and gingerbread. So no, camera is not working on 2.2+ yet. Z got some progress making the camera atleast respond, but so far, if he implements full camera function, he looses other key functions in the rom. Not a good trade.

No pressrue on the devs and they can do what they please with their work. But as other have said it sounds like a great idea. Any devs care to comment on this idea?

From apple to the wonderful world of droid questions!!

Hello everyone im fairly new to the world of android .
i just have a few questions that i have not been able to
find answers too Im sorry if there are other posts asking the same please send me their way if there is. i recently upgraded from the iphone 4 to the dell streak i have upgraded to 2.2 and rooted thanks to this great site .
i love how it runs now but now im getting interested in custom roms . my main questions are what are the benefits to a custom rom over just regular 2.2 ? and would a beginner user like myself benefit enough from one to install it? from what i can tell dj Steves roms are what we have is this correct?(i hear they are great but im not sure what they do ) i also purchased a galaxy tab when i got the phone phone and have not touched it much since im always playing on the phone should i keep it is there anything it can do that my phone cant? again guys please excuse me for the newbie questions and if did something wrong posting here u gotta remember i came from the iphone lol
thanks again!
Welcome to the "Android World" from another newbie
Benefits of custom roms usually are:
Increased performance,
UI customizations,
Application customizations,
Pre-installed must have applications.
Before my streak I had an Xperia X10 (and some windows mobile phones but that's another story). I tried most of the roms on X10. There are always small bugs that you have to live with.
At the end of the day you have to decide what fits best to your needs.
PS. I'm still at 318 official but I keep an eye to Steve's roms.
Im new to android as well, I bought this about 10 days ago.
I used to have iphone 4 as well as u are. I just downgrade to this streak for having bigger 5" inch.
Now I use official froyo 2.2 . Pref mod 318. Build 12821. Set cpu. On demand overclock 1.2Ghz . Pretty satisfied with it.
thanks
Thanks everyone for the welcome . i thought it was going to be a downgrade but i love the streak way more then my iphone 4! like you sai the 5 inch screen is awesome i don't think im keeping my galaxy tab anymore lol. I need to search and find how to do that on demand overclock i think for now ill stay stock until i understand android a bit better . Does anyone know where i could learn more about development on android is there a class i could take to learn the basics?
i want to contribute to the forum so i really want to learn how to develop
thanks again everyone. lastly does anyone know if anyone else is making a 5inch phone in the near future?
thanks
I'm so glad i'm not the only person to dump the iphone4 for the streak... I kinda felt silly doing so, especially since my iphone4 was completely custom, but so far i'm glad I did. My g/f now uses the iphone4. I got the streak for 49 bucks at best buy, and really liking it. perfect size.
anyone know why i can't get adb to detect my device? (debug is on, just upgraded to 2.2 ota)
-thanks
I don't think that you upgraded I think you down graded going with the streak that's where you went wrong
Not sure if 2.2 requires different drivers or not might give that a go. Welcome to android.
sent from my re-engineered dInc
So far my streak feels like an upgrade to me I had the iphone four since it came out but it just didn't feel right to me. guess it just depends on what fits your needs. My wife now uses the iphone 4th and I don't miss it one bit. I love having widgets and a screen big enough to actually make the gps useful I don't think I could go Back to a Small screen again
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I also just came from Iphone world. Been a fan of iOS since the 3g. still a fan.
But couldn't deal with a lack of a bring screen. Been using the streak for like 2 weeks now.
I like it. I think the screen lags compared to Iphone, but maybe some of these performance modificatons will help.
I will stick with froyo 2.2 for now until I learn more. Haven't even rooted yet.

New Google Guidelines for Android updates - SE is in the boat

http://www.tcmagazine.com/tcm/news/...-and-carriers-adopt-android-update-guidelines
This would also mean that x8, x10 mini and x10 mini pro will be obliged to receive further Android updates. Since the guidelines from google also include already released phones.
Since the Release of the mini/mini pro its almost a year so we would still have a few months left on our updates.
Lets hope SE decides to do it.
Is it not only for "new devices"?
On a german news site a read it will also include older devices. But i guess we will have to wait and see
Sent from my U20i using XDA Premium App
I hope that our X10 mini/pro will be also included in this
Official Gingerbread would be pretty nice, I'm thankful for nobodyatall's and the other developers work on their custom ROMS, right now the VGA-only camera and lack of Flash is the only thing stopping me from moving over to MiniCM7.
Hmm. This is very interesting and I can't believe Google is coming to our rescue (really they're just defending their business etc. but we benefit).
I notice in the article it does say new devices. But yes our Minis are still under SE's 2 year update. However, SE have bullshi**ted before about what these phones are capable of re: X10 dualtouch etc. then release it. But, our devices under SE's 2 years and the new Minis on 2.3 makes me think that there is still a chance. I've read some devs on here say that much will be different in the new Minis and porting the software in the future will likely not work, but I still think SE could port it themselves via an official 'generic' release like they did with the X10. Not telling us that now saves them 5million questions every day about when we get it. Let's hope something is leaked...I LOVE leaks...
http://www.ptcrb.com/ctiastaff/complete/view_complete_request.cfm?modelid=16755
What are these April 2011 updates certified? Has anyone discussed them?...
Phoney, I think you'll be more than pleasantly surprised with the MiniCM7 ROM from Owain and Slade87. I've been using it for two weeks now and found the upgrade process very simple. The rom offers dual touch, access to the full 256mb of internal storage, very easy to put your apps onto sd, you can run it faster than the 600 Mhz specified by Sony, its a very stable rom.
Just make sure you do a backup first, you can always recover back to the standard SE rom, then you'll realise just how bad it is.
You'll turn your mini pro into a brand new, sexy rom for only a few hours (probably less than that) work.
I also use Owain and Slades Custom ROM and ist very Stable , Fast and works great
Its worth to update that rom!
And i think that SE will not bring bigger updates for us!! so Iam lucky that this community have so great DEVS
So big thx to Owain and Slade87
In my opinion, we should encourage SE to update our devices to gingerbread..
Personally I would only have a peak and probably return to the ROM I'm currently using (NobodyAtAll's CM7 ASOP). The main advantage i see here however is that things like full 5mp camera support etc.. would be much simpler to obtain if it just becomes a question of moving the various files and drivers from SE's 2.3.4 to NAA's or any other CM7/2.3 rom
i'd rather using your ROM slade , its alot better xD
means tat we will get the ginger bread?
that means that the old ones xperia will be very very stable with those new android firmwares?
Hell Yea!!

w00t! If they update us to GB or even Froyo, that means they will need to update the kernel to support functionality in the new versions. (e.g. tethering/iptables) Keeping my fingers crossed.
Unless I'm mistaken, that Google agreement mentioned ONLY NEW devices. There is no news, as far as I know right now, that this covers devices already released. I just thought I'd say this before people start blowing up balloons - there is absolutely no hint of 2.3 for our Minis by SE so I don't know where people get the excitement from.
I don't know whether you've read about the security issues regarding the vulnerability of the android phones
blogs.computerworld.com/18304/scary_android_security_hole_in_99_of_phones_panic?af[/url]
(sorry, can't post links yet)
but in whatever way google tackles this problem, this issue might prompt them to release further updates to every android phone. Article says only versions 2.3.4. or later are safe.
I read this indeed ^^^^ and I think Google is much more serious about updating than manufacturers. I don't know what kind of pressure they might exert on manufacturers to update recently released devices both because of this security issue (before 2.3) and because of that new 18 month agreement for updates. Here's hoping.
Hope we get updated...
I think they should hire owain and slade - that would solve lot of things
It's only for NEW devices and unfortunately SE doesn't say anything about us

Beta testing?

I wanted to post on another thread, but since I haven't got a post count, I can't.
(member for almost a year though)
I currently have a Samsung i9000, which is purely for dev & test purposes.
(I just bought a HTC Desire S for daily use).
I will also have a HTC Hero as soon as a new battery arrives. (on order)
I am willing to to test anything, from custom roms to apps, nightlies etc..
I've a fair bit of experience in beta testing of PC software, and used to be a windows dev myself.
I know how to write bug reports
For now I'd like to focus on testing on the Hero and the i9000, as I need a working phone for daily use. (and I haven't played with the Desire S enough to not screw it up)
On the i9000 I can flash any ROM you want me to test apps on (official ones: 2.2, 2.2.1, 2.3.3, 2.3.5, 2.3.6), ICS, Cyanogen or MIUI.
The Hero I haven't been able to try anything yet, since I can't boot without a battery.
I'm seriously interested in this one for instance:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518731
I'm using a dedicated macbook for playing with this, which dual boots into win7.
Let me know if there is anything I can add, thanks to reading this forum I've learned a lot about android and the tutorials are excellent!
(hence me being a member for so long, without questions...)
Cheers & thanks for this great resource, it's time to give back!
