[Q] Get Geohot to hack bootloader? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do you think we can get geohot to hack the bootloader for the atrix? I mean he could use some money with the law suit he has hahah

The law suit has been over. He doesn't need money he just gave $10,000 donation to EFF or something. And someone else posted this same question last week.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751442
not sure if this helps, but the droid x was in the same situation and this is where the bootloader stuff started going right.

[FOR SALE] Rooted Eris

Guys, I have my rooted Eris for sale. Just got a Droid Incredible, so I don't need it anymore. Nothing wrong with it, overclocks to 710 just fine. Any questions?

How would I pay for this if I don't have paypal. I'm a dev on here, I have 2 ROMS out and just recently dropped my phone in the ocean so I really would like to have another Eris but I can't have a paypal account.
google checkout have options to send bills like paypal?
I don't use paypal either so if you want to send me a money order that would work fine
Western Union is always an option or better yet

COD by the US postal service. He does not pay you get it back in the mail.
I'm open to anything. Mailing a money order seems easiest, but makes no difference to me
No offense to you but the only problem with this is he might send the money order and never get the phone. With COD he gets the package at his door before paying and you don't have to worry about him stiffing you.
Very true, again, I'm down with whatever

I think i'm going to have to stick to craigslist. I'm in the Army and as some know, you cannot go very long without some type of contact method or you can get in serious trouble. It was a good idea at the time because it's a really good deal. However, buying a phone from someone on the "mainland" means waiting a while for shipping which is something I don't have enough rank for lol. So sorry if I seem like an a$$ but I think i'm going to just get something on craigslist that way I can get it locally on the island and have it almost instantly. Thanks a lot though man, I really appreciate you willing to work with me on it! Now let's hope this tsunami doesn't sweep me and my family out to the ocean! LOL
Don't sweat it, stay safe!

It is not, I sold it
I should have caught this when it came up, but ANY sale of devices belongs in the marketplace.

Root With HTC Loose your WARRANTY

I dont think this has been posted, But here is the latest on the HTC Bootloader unlock
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/htc-explains-official-bootloader-unlock-process-asks-you-to-sig/
Yeah that sucks, but what did you really expect? HTC can't be expected to support unlocked phones bc ppl can really screw up their phones if they don't know what they're doing. HTC is only protecting themselves and this was absolutely expected IMHO. Good news article though regardless.
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D... Get in the third dimension!
Thanks for the info, didn't catch that. Please keep in mind next time that this may be an official development for information on the official bootloader unlock, but that does not make it development, this technically belongs in general.
No your right, it wasnt posted in DEVELOPMENT, it IS however posted in GENERAL (where it belongs!)
Hmmm.... Lets see here.
1. Root Phone w/ out HTC.
2. Do whatever you want.
3. Have hardware error and need warranty repair.
4. Back to stock we go!
5. ????
6. Profit!
Umad HTC?
had a feeling that was going to happen but not to sound hard on you this is the development section this should be placed in general section just a heads up

Wow, it got moved really fast! Lol
So what would that do to Sprint insurance if you root with HTC? Does that mean you might as well cancel it or will Sprint still replace?
Do you think HTC knows we already have these devices unlocked. Lol
Although sucks if this is where Androids future is going.
I'm glad that some companys have listened to the community. We asked for them to give us unlocked bootloaders t and they are ACTUALLY delivering. Of course it voids the warranty I'm not suprised at all. Stops *****ing bout it cuz they could've NOT unlocked them and than everything would be the same. Change is good in my opinion.

Definitely will. We'll have less people coming over to this forum and whining at us because we won't hold their hand through the entire rooting process (although there has been enough of that already anyways), and more time for expansion ROM cooking.
And +1 to easily being able to fool anyone into thinking our warranty isn't void.
Lets be honest here, anyone on this forum would never use the MFW anyways, we are all here for one reason and one reason only. To get the most out of our phones and exploit their capabilities. You technically void your warranty with any other root anyways, so what's the difference? We are all taking a risk at doing anything with our phones in the first place. I can't say I blame HTC for taking their stand. They will give you the unlock, but you have to be willing to put your feet in the water too.
I just think it's funny. During the flame wars there were multiple people saying "htc would not release something that voids warranty."

I saw this posted yesterday, but ever since I started rooting phones with my Hero a year and a half ago I always knew it technically voided the warranty. It is easy to switch back to stock and I have never had them even check when I returned a phone in the past.
Glad that they are going to release it. Not suprised that it voids the warranty. No different than putting mods on your car.....

Isn't that what RUU's are for?! I haven't had any problems at all returning previously rooted phones to Sprint, even after bricking my GF's Optimus S trying to get it back to stock, they took it back and gave us a new one. If you don't know how to revert to stock, you shouldn't be messing with root in the first place.
Just my opinion..

I'm losing faith in the quality of HTC's dependability. They even drop your warranty if you transfer your evo to another line on your account. That's retarded because you're still the user of the device.

SuccessFul Bootloader Unlock-How To

Since Vzw is making Motorola (or the other way around) Lock the boot loader here is a way to unlock it.
Easiest way to make sure Motorola sends devices with unlocked bootloader is to REFUSE to buy any motorola devices until unlocked. Also Refuse to keep VZW acct if BIG red makes Moto lock it down. Enough said. So come on everyone. Return all those Razr's and lets force motorolas hand & VZW's.
Something can and will be done about this because android is AOSP. Open source come on VZW & Moto.
Great, or spamming their account twitter, ecc.
Wow, thread title only a little misleading.
well since my aunt Joan, neighbor Steve, lady at the grocery store counter, bartender at the local pub and his sister, along with so many other passionate Android phone owners all want the RAZR and they have absolutely no idea what a bootloader even is we might have a problem.
if lets say a really high number here like 10% of the owners or potential buyers want the bootloader unlocked i dont think if we all stopped buying them it would get it done.
the major majority could give a about bootloaders, custom roms, kernels, or even a lot of them when the next OS update is coming.
we dont see it that way here and i am certainly on your side on this as far as wanting the unlocked bootloader but its not gonna happen with your method unless somehow you get all the aunt Jones and bartender guy and his sister who dont know or care to jump in.
i keep asking myself the same question though and that is that it is no secret at all that Motorola phones are locked tight and the others are locked with paper walls so why in the world would someone who has to have an unlocked bootloader to be happy buy a Motorola? seems silly to me. it is very clear where they (Verizon) stand on this issue and the insanity of people buying them and then getting pissed is very bizarre.
anyway i want it too but i wanted the RAZR more than i wanted an unlocked bootloader or i would have picked another phone.
while the idea is obviously a good one, please don't do it this way.
THis is Dev forum. And your title is very misleading.
I am not moderator here, but I just hope to make my 2cent here.
By the way, I support this idea despite its practicality in the rally.
This ISN'T ABSOLUTELY A GOOD IDEA.
1. Posting a thread with a title like this in the Development area is a really bad thing to do;
2. Motorola already said that the bootloader will get unlocked with the ICS update, where carriers are allowing that, so, you should only damage VZW (after the ICS update, confirmation of unlock/lock) and not Moto. Moto has nothing to do with that, they're only selling a device like VZW wants on VZW brand.
If you want to sell your 1.5L Coke bottle in a store at $1 and that store sells it at $0.50, you won't ever go to that store anymore. Noone said to that store that they could sell it at $0.50.
VZW has a good reason to not unlock the bootloader: if it's locked you will have to pay for WiFi tethering, so, unlocked BL -> less money for them. Okay, it isn't so good to make you to pay to use an OS function, but anyway, that's it.
And I repeat, Motorola is doing it right and they're about to give us (surely at least retail devices) a solution for unlocking the bootloader: if you press them for something they can't decide on, you'll make the situation to get poor and you surely won't have the bootloader unlock.
Talk without harassment etc to them. There's no reason to get angry because they said prior selling the RAZR that the bootloader will be unlocked only if the carrier that is selling it is okay with that thing.
And MOD, PLEASE, move this thread in General. Thanks.

Locked Bootloader
It is my understanding that the locked bootloader only prevents custom kernels. You can still root, rom, and overclock with it locked. I believe everyone is missing the point. These are "phones" before anything. No other phone compant has a radio to compete with Moto. If you don't like blur, root and either freeze the blur or flash a rom. I personally could care less what a phone boasts if it won't perform it's main functions.
This is just as stupid as your post about this in another thread. 95% of Droid razr owners don't even know what a boot loader is. Even if all of xda returned their phones to Verizon it wouldnt even make a sliver of a difference.
I was under the impression that Google Licensing for ICS required that all phones moving forward had unlocked bootloaders...

we know the droid 3 exploit works (its how about 97% of you rooted). however the electrify has a 2.3.5 update that blocks it.. which means that photon owners will prolly be rootless come next update. :O
the man who has brought out a good number of root exploits, Dan Rosenberg has a new trick up his sleeve. seems hes already got the next wave of motos rooted including the droid 4 that released today. thing is there is gunna be a lot of people using it (i know its what ill be changing the one click to so that we can root the electrify. and think about how many other moto devices that will be freed. with that in mind djrbliss is looking to get himself a droid 4 (ew who uses verizon? ).
anyways long story short, i included a we pay link he gets 200 he'll make it public and then any extra goes to the american red cross. so if you have root now, or in the future its prolly cuz of this guy. if your an electrify owner and want a nice easy one click? then shoot this guy a few bucks

I'll be glad to kick in $20 whenever the time comes that I need to root for ICS or have to re-root because I couldn't ignore 2.3.5 (I'll ignore 2.3.5 if I can).

How is $575 (and he has stopped accepting) a failure?
With all respect to the dev, I think the mistake he made was the "I'll release it when y'all pay $500". THAT (his message) was the failure in the "experiment". The $200 for a phone was not the issue.
'nuff said - I am NOT trying to inflame anything here. I believe the dev has done awesome free work for us, but could have avoided all of this with slightly different words.
People are still people and the psychology of messages still counts!
Please take all the above ramblings in a respectful, positive and helpful tone!
No offense but if he did it, he has the right to wait for 500. 99% of us work for free. Ad clicks and donations are nice but not expected. That doesn't mean we don't have to work for free it just means we do.

I totally agree - he had every right to set a number and not release until that number was reached. He has no obligation to unlock phones for free.
But we'll never know in this case since he changed the rules mid-experiment, which means the experiment neither failed nor succeeded. When I saw the way he originally announced it, I thought "this won't end well" (see below for more).
The point I was trying to make was that, from a human psych POV, that a bounty (really a ransom here) is not an effective motivator for a bunch of opinionated, strong-willed contributors like us.
Case in point - a few years ago at ppcGeeks, $300 bounty, "release when paid" for a Win Mo phone (TP2 I think), people got ruffled, rules got changed, dev collected $1,000 in 2 days.
It's all about psychology and messaging, for although we are are bit different from a lot of people, we are still normal people. A carrot remains a better motivator than a stick.
In my opinion, the dev should have said "hard work", "please contribute", "first 200 to me for a phone which is a tool that will benefit you", "next 100 / 200 for my family", "rest to charity" (if that's really what he wants to; keep it all if he wants). Just my opinion of course - and I respect that the dev may or may not care in the slightest about all my words (assume he doesn't).
Sorry for the number of words - although an engineer, I took a lot of psych in college.

My recent discussion with Samsung... I don't know if this is against the rules but...

So I was into rooting jail breaking all sorts of stuff a couple of years ago just because I like to know how things work. I'm an electrician as well so this is a part of my life everyday. But electronics are my playground. Anyway, I have an GS4 i545 of1 build. i don't use it so for fun I've been dinking with it. Bricked it several times brought it back from death. I got onto a chat sesh with Samsung saying "Hey tell me how to unlock the bootloader. I have a 16GB phone that I'd like to put 16GB worth of music on throw it behind some books on a shelf and blast my music through the Stereo in my home. It's barely clinging onto life as it is. I've got brown face tape covering the the front componenet due to the fact i broke the screen when moving. But, here's the kicker. ITS MY PHONE! I want the 16GB of space I paid for. No I don't want amazon's book club for balding men or whatever else they put on it. I don't go to McDonalds order a cheese burger and give the dude who took my order 2 bites! My word for word come back to their advice to not root this phone was that if i took everyone's advice I'd be dead from getting hit by a car when my mom told me to go play in the street for a couple hours. Anyway, I'm at the point where If I have to pay an arm and a leg to use this phone while I'm their customer, when the time comes for me to purchase another one either give me full rights to my product or buy it back from me at half price! So. Now Samsung told me to ask verizon.... Verizon didn't build the phone. they did. but I'll go ask mommy and get the same answer and I'm going to ship half the phone to Samsung and half to Verizon and ask them each to pay for half since this was the only way i could to figure out to get the bootloader from keeping from doing what I wanted! lol, ok rant over.:silly:

You are preaching to the choir.
I had a few spare minutes this morning while I was eating breakfast, so I figured I'd get Verizon's response. It's what you'd expect. The representative was sympathetic though.
Will: Thank you for contacting the Verizon Wireless Chat Team regarding your device. How can we help you today?
You: Hello! I own a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 (SCH-i545). I bought it new from you guys and it's fully paid off. I'm thinking about upgrading to a new phone and using the S4 as a media player. However, I would like to unlock the bootloader so I have full control over my device and can continue to apply security updates.
You: I have read Verizon's official policy at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5YY_3KIKjphSklad0NPaEtjMDA/view?usp&eq;sharing. However, my device is out of warranty so I will not be requesting support, and I will be using it without a SIM card so there's no potential for it to disrupt your network. Additionally, other major carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile allow bootloader unlocks, seemingly without any major negative repercussions. Finally, you actually sold a Galaxy S4 Developer's Edition with an unlocked bootloader (SCH-I545ZKDVZW), so it seems you've already made this functionality publicly available.
You: In light of these facts, I feel like it's reasonable to request full access to the four-year-old hardware which I've fully paid for. Could you please direct me to the necessary file(s) to unlock the bootloader on my Galaxy S4?
Will: Thank you for the info and for the request. I assure you I will do everything I can to help you get to what you're after. To get started, may I have your wireless number with area code?
You: Sure, it's (XXX) XXX-XXXX.
Will: Thank you for that. I want to be absolutely upfront with you, from a principle perspective, I personally agree with you - a device you paid for you should be able to do what you'd like with it, accepting any and all risks and responsibility of course, which you seem to fully understand. I have no problem searching for any updated info we have on unlocking the bootloader for you. I'll need a few moments to do this, will that be okay?
You: Sure, that would be great. Please take your time.
Will: I really appreciate it. As of now we don't have resources or the tools to perform such an action. My understanding is when it's locked, it's built that way and cannot be unlocked by Verizon. That does not necessarily mean it cannot be unlocked by all, just means it takes methods beyond what we can do within our scope of support here.
Will: *correction: doesn't mean it cannot be unlocked at all
You: Fair enough! I'm disappointed, but I understand there may not be anything you can do. I really appreciate your checking for me though! If you keep track of this sort of thing, could you please make a note about my request and maybe consider revisiting your policy about locked bootloaders in the future?
Will: Absolutely - it's something I'm personally passionate about. I get that there's a certain population who messes with their phones and don't know what they're doing, but for the rest of us I think there should be at least some give on that. I will definitely continue to lift feedback up, and the more customers who do that could lead to some change down the road.
Will: Now that we've covered that, will that be all you'll need for today?
You: Yep, I won't take up any more of your time. Thanks a lot, hope you have a great day! Goodbye.

Unfortunately this is what I did. I got the iPhone for the wife cause it's reliable. Her last Verizon Moto X became unusable after update and could not be rolled back due to locked bootloader. I was like my work iPhone still gets updates and works fine after 5 years so I got an iPhone for her and one for me so I knew how to help her if needed. I miss android sometimes but having to buy a new phone every 2 years cause phone isn't supported anymore and has security holes just seems ridiculous.

Time to move on
All unlock bootloader talk is a waste of time. If Samsung/VZW do it for this phone then they will have a horde of nerds clamoring for the same for every device ever made then they would have no integrity for their OTA system and they would start receiving bricked devices. If I were running VZW I would make the same decision not because I am a phone nazi but because I have a #15 on Fortune 500 company to run and it needs to run predictably and reliably for the vast majority mass flocks of sheep who will never even hear of root and if they ever do they will brick their phones in the first 5 minutes because nobody reads direction and that put a burden on the warranty department.
My answer would be "if you want to play with root and use VZW go buy a Moto X Style direct from Moto for $400 (CMDA and LTE 4 and 13), flash a CM13 nightly, and come back and buy a SIM and pay for a month-month account. Thank you."
Eventually I will buy an unlocked phone and stay with my $24/mo Cricket deal and never look back at a locked device. Let's move on.

All unlock bootloader talk is a waste of time. If Samsung/VZW do it for this phone then they will have a horde of nerds clamoring for the same for every device ever made then they would have no integrity for their OTA system and they would start receiving bricked devices. I get what you're saying and I'm sure that everyone that has dealt with this are still red in the face with anger but here's my problem. You go pay $400 for the moto whatchamacallit and I pay over double that and you get to do more? eh I'm just us as customers of vzw/samsung need to say "well bye!" and do what you're saying. but Id rather be ripped off by an online scam and not know who it was rather than a large electronic company that make refrigerators that you can log on to and see if you have milk in it... Don't you think they could invest a little time and effort into making a product that would work for all three (vzw/samsung/customers) of us? Maybe I'm crazy, maybe my red hair on my bum is getting warm and just making me one mad ginger... either way I know what I want with my money as I know other people do. it's fun doing this and they are trying to take away something that keeps me entertained when I have nothing to do. WAY BETTER THAN SITTING ON MY BUTT WATCHING FRIENDS OF SOME BS! *drops a samsung phone at your feet and walks*
My point exactly
LIke I said, this is a waste of time. You are not crazy you just don't understand how the people running a gianormous company think. I'll give you a hint: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and anything that disrupts that gets flushed. The .5% of smartphone users that want to root and ROM are a disruption, get it? Probably everyone on the SCH-I545 forum with a locked BL bought it by mistake and learned a tough lesson. So soon I will go elsewhere. ~$220 for a brand new AT&T LG G3 on Amazon and $40 on Cricket (as low as $24 on a group plan) buys you all the flash freedom you want. I didn't care for the call quality so I'm holding out for better but could flash the latest CM13 nightly all I wanted. Moto X is great but 5.7" is too big for me. Brand new HTC M9's can be had for $300 on Amazon and I'm considering it. Or hold out and save for an HTC 10 next year when they are not $700 freakin dollars and CM devs have had some time with it.
If you have nothing to do then find some side work and earn some $ for an unlocked phone. But if what you are saying is you paid $800 for a locked SCH-I545 then I can't help you.
Kirk out.
You could also buy any Nexus device. In my case a Nexus 7 (2013) for $125 on Swappa. I have tried on so many different ROMs I'm almost burned out......almost, but never completely. I do feel that VZW and Sammie make a great product. But we should have the option at signing to have an unlocked boot, and agree to forego OTAS and warranty work.
P. S. Where ever you bought your S4, you got ripped. They should get some of that Ginger ire as well?
