[Q] Michigan cops stealing drivers' phone data - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to block this? Could a patch be made? I personally have nothing to hide but this seems a bit wrong to me.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20055431-1.html

Any data collected from that device is illegal unless the officer aquired a warrant to search the data on the phone. I am sure apps will come out to attempt to block it. But I also don't think officers are wasteing time using the device on everyone they pull over. Unless your contact list is relevant you pulling 95 in a 65 ;p

Total bull****, wow. Well, the MSP claim to only have 5 of the devices, but that is 5 too many, in my opinion. If they really are utilizing this, what the hell are they using it FOR exactly? Personally, I'd tell a cop to kiss my ass, because I know my rights. But, if it's happening, I don't see it lasting long.

Yea you don't have to give the cop your phone. That ritarded. The last cop that pulled me over wrote me a ticket for speeding the same speed as all the other cars on the road so I *****es him out. Then he wrote me a window tint ticket also. Fought both in court while he sat there ans got both dropped.
Tim Wxxx. Eat my hemmoroids.

That's right, it is very ritarded.

If they don't give into the request for how they use it, some cop is going to pull over the wrong person (ie. a lawyer) who is going to give up the info, then it's all going to hit the fan for the State and the officer.

Exactly, and I hope it happens soon. This is such a violation of rights it is ridiculous.

I would assume an app could be developed. It would need to disable data transferring somehow when it recognized that this type of device was plugged in.

Sounds like an oppurtunity for a good DEV to create an app to encrypt the data on your SD card similar to what can be done to the HD in XP/7. Of course that wouldn't help what's being kept in memory much but it would be a start. The problem with encrypting is the system resources need to encrypt/decrypt the data when accessing it but with dual core processors coming out for phones, that might not be an issue for long!

Android security cam or system?

OK..... As some of you know I own a deli/restaurant. We were broken into recently (no I don't have a security system and yes I'm a dope), luckily they only got us for $200-$300. I understand all of the obvious options we have for a system and I will be putting those in place asap.
Here's the thing.... there was no sign of forced entry. I have business partners (wasn't them) and 2 employees with keys (really don't think it was them) but possibly someone that knows any of the above got their key. None of that matters (my tiny brain will investigate that)....
Is there a security system or cams that could be linked to any of my android phones or tablets? If anyone knows of a system anything close to what I'm talking about, that would be really cool.
I'll be meeting with Time Warner and my wife just mentioned adt about a system but..... if I could any how have cams going to my tablets or phones that would be even more helpful, if it was an inside job.... and I hardly EVER think that way but there was no sign of forced entry. Also it happened the day of the Hurricane so the cops said anything outside with finger prints wouldn't show a thing.
Just saw something similar on the Nook Color forum and was wondering why I didn't ask this question to you guys the day it happened.
Money is somewhat of an option (as it is to most people) but having something feeding to my android devices would be priceless.
If this is an obvious answer please let this thread sink but if there is a way to have security running to my phones or tablets please speak up.
Thanks,
Chef

any suggestions for those that want the wireless route of camera? where I want to mount mine I wont have any existing cabeling for video and even getting power to it is gonna be tricky.
Really want remote viewing control on phone, recording dvr either onsite or in the cloud. most seem to be hardline cameras still except for the IP cameras which dont work with most typical dvr's ive seen at first glance. I know they make transmitters to convert the wired camera to wireless but thats adds a ton of clutter too as ones ive seen are bulky.
Try logitech alert 750e on Google.

I hate geovision dvr cards, but they have an android app finally. Most systems can be viewed from a web browser, but you'll want to make sure that there is an app for them as it makes viewing the video remotely much easier.
If you don't want to worry about finding an app for a specific brand go with wireless cameras. Don't get the kind that need a base unit. Get some that can be linked to a wireless router. You can then setup an existing computer to record the video or get a new computer dedicated for just this. Since each camera uses its own up address you can use one of the many ip camera apps in the market.
If you need help with anything send me a pm. I do camera installs and repair as a side job.

Let me talk to my business partners and wife tonight or tomorrow morning and I'll shoot you a pm after I talk to them. This seems to be a fairly cheap option w/out monthly fees or a base. I also have a sneaky suspicion that maybe someone is going in after we close and eating or feeding their friends and family like kings.
I work 7 days a week and close the business quite a few of the days. Sometimes I get a gut feeling that things weren't the wah they were when I left the night before. Soooo..... If I could be watching my business at night while yucking it up on xda, that's a win/win.

I don't have any information for you, but just want to show my sympathy toward your situation. It would be terrible if someone you trusted with the keys was doing it or even giving the key to their friends to do it. I am a Union Committeeman at the shop I work at and I just had to sit in with a maintenance man of ours while he got fired for stealing from the company. He was using his key to come in after hours and stealing copper wire and brass fittings and taking them to the scrap yard for money. The Plant manager was suspicious that it was an inside job and took pictures of the cars and people he suspected and took them down to the local scrap yard. They identified the guy and his car and even gave him a copy of the invoice he signed himself(dumbass). He lost a decent job over $76. There was nothing the Union could do to fight it because he was basically caught red handed. The Plant Manager gave him the option to either resign his position on the spot, or he could try to fight it and he would get the cops involved. He admitted doing it and resigned. Anyway, I hope you can catch whoever is doing it. I hope it's not the people you have trusted with keys, but it just sounds strange to me that there are no signs of forced entry. It may cost you now to install a camera system, but will save you $ in the long run. Good Luck bro.

Thanks! I tried doing a little detective work myself but lead me nowhere. They got me for the $100 bucks I leave in the till everynight to start the next day with and got my change box (roughly $200) where I keep all my rolled quarters, dimes etc to make change for the register ( this is where my detective work came in) . I went to a local change for dollars machine vendor but so many people use those daily (including myself when our home change cup gets full) that it would be impossible. I went to local stores and told them to keep an eye on anyone paying with rolled change. That's about the extent of my detective abilities. If I knew any crack dealers they would be the first ones I would ask if anyone's has been buying crack with rolled quarters (haha) .
As for food possibly missing at night is weighing heavy on my mind due to the whole trust issue when you hand a key to your business to someone you trust. I really don't think its anyone with the keys but maybe someone they know grabbing the key while they're sleeping or whatever.
I'll get the bastard whoever it is.

Looking for app to track my wife?

I'm looking for an app I can install on my wife's phone that is hidden so that I can see where she is or has been via cell towers or gps. Doesn't need to be real time but I need to know if she has been where I think she has been. She is pretty dumb when it comes to her phone but has never had gps enabled and would probably notice the enabled icon. I'm pretty confident she is cheating on me and just need to know for sure before I confront her. Is there such an app?
I don't need a lot of features. Basically location history. Some place called spectorsoft has something but it is $70. ANy freebies out there?
Thanks!!
Just go to Google maps and sign her up on Latitude. Latitude will tell you where she was and is. Then after that, install Dexrex on her phone and you can see any, and all, texts she sends and receives. The best part is that it's all free. Then you can use Overview (which used to be free) to do similar things. Also, if you want to catch her on your PC, just install a keylogger.
Does she have Android smartphone? If she have, you can find such apps on Market. I needed that type of app before but unfortunately, we haven't got android on all device. Google Latitude is good too.

I don't condone your method.... But, I know where you are coming from.
Tasker is an amazing app. Not any type of tracking system specifically. But you can create a set of profiles and tasks where you could do something like send a txt to her. Something like "I love you." Or "how are you" or something inconspicuous. You can then program it to, upon recieving said message, turn on GPS for 1min, get a lock on her location and txt you back her location and then shut off GPS. You can also make it so if she looks back into her chat log. It won't show that her phone automatically sent that txt with her where a bouts.
I have something similar in case my phone is ever lost/stolen. Except my setup will also lock the phone, flash the leds, the camera flash, and make a loud noise.
Or you could just sit her down and talk about it....she will appreciate you more, because if she finds the apps you install.....theirs nothing worse than denying it was you who installed them (lying to her) when you have no proof she is lying to you. Your situation is nothing that can't be sorted out by talking about it. Have you got concrete evidence she's playing away? If you don't trust her....I'd learn to and quick because lack of trust is a killer for all relationships. Don't snoop around fishing dude....talk to her!

I have teenagers, so I definitely know where your coming from. My solution is an annual subscription (I think $12 per year, no more than $19.99) is "WaveSecure" by McAfee. Which I do admit if I EVER lost my phone, it is a blessing to have! I can go to a certain locked website by McAfee and not only be able to see where my phone is (without the user knowing) but I can lock it and send a alarm with a custom message. I can even pull pics and content from it. And you can't get into it or uninstall it once its set up on phone without a 6 digit password. Its mainly used if you have you phone stolen. It even notifies me if the SIM card is removed!
Latitude also works, but you have to configure her phone, and (like my teenagers) will eventually know how to turn it off.
Damn kids get smart like that.

You can also record audio and take pictures remotely with it! Be sure to silence the camera first though!

I would check your local laws before doing this. I believe it is illegal. I believe there was a recent case where a husband did something similar and was held on wiretapping charges. I do believe it was key logging and not cell phone tracking.
But I hope she is not cheating on you. That is crappy to go through.

anyways ciq doesnt appear to be on this phone.. my best guess? its a global phone.. other carriers prolly dont want tracking metrics being run thru their network back to sprint..
thats just my take on it all tho
But it does have an ad service apk which does almost the same thing. Ever notice random ad text messages or crap in the notification dropdown. It was the first thing to go in skinnyrev0
sprintzone? yea thats common across devices tho
Sprint zone is technically not advertising though. It's designed to "provide important sprint information" though yes, most of that involves advertising for carious sprint services and partners. There is a setting in sprint zone to turn off notifications.

I just found "Data Collection 1.0" on the phone. Look at the permissions, very scary looking just like CIQ. And there are "Data Collector Service 1.0" and "Data Collector Provider 1.0" to go with it.
Its already been confirmed that the photon doesn't have carrier IQ
stop it and see what happens. you lose your connection to google immediatly and even then the service stops. ciq is a service taht cant be stopped so easily

Its cause now we're aware of it. That's like you bang a hooker, get an STD that has no immediate symptoms like the silent killer syphilis, then 1 year later you get a panel and it shows positive. What's not to understand? People had some sort idea that Google was keeping location based stats but many didn't know all of our keystrokes were being monitored at such a deep level hidden in our phones.

Can our phones get hacked by random people?

Ok so I have a 3D on my line which belongs to my sister. Well she works at the mall and some Indian guy that used to work for Sprint is telling her he hacks into her phone all the time and uses her internet and that if he wanted to he can access her photos too. So is this possible or is he just bs'in to spark coversations with her? I'm about ready to go over to her job and confront him. I find that sort of behavior creepy and intolerable! Any1 has any idea??

idk man, you need to do some dental work.
I don't know if a "random" person could hack a phone. But:
1. Is the phone rooted? That would give a person more ability to do something bad.
2. There are "spy" software out there. But the guy would have had to have a few minutes alone with the phone.
3. Maybe install malware through an E-mail or text message.
But to use her phone for Internet access sounds pretty weak. Easier and better methods of doing that at a mall where public WIFI is all around.
Bottom line, if you are actually concerned, just have your sister do a factory restore, that wipes everything and then reinstall her apps one at a time validating all are suppose to be on her phone.

And yea I guess I'll tell her to do a hard reset. Thanks!

Just check she hasn't got portable wifi Hotspot switched on on her phone.
I sometimes use that on my phone when I'm out to connect family members phones and laptops to the internet.

this thread is exactly the kind Papa Smurf posted about...basic networking rules...the ONLY way he can intercept her wireless internet signal is if she is connected to the malls wifi... thing is i personally have programs that will allow me to spoof ANY gateway that i am connected to and collect cookies, not to mention use them. i have a program that if i connect to a server that she is connected to i can kill her internet signal... i have one also to where i can connect into her phone or computer.. bottom line... if its wireless and a public server...it becomes public info... so if she stays off the malls wifi and uses just her providers internet connection then she will be fine...unless he clones her phone which he would have to steal first .... now.. prompoting violence is childish ...its not what the forum is for...if anything reprt the guy to the police and give him a record that will ride with him...

If that Indian guy (not me ) is using android phone or PC, he surely is using apps like FaceNiff, Cain & Abel, ANTI, ettercap, DroidSheep, NetCut etc....
So this app should help but it will not work to its full potential as your Sisters phone is not rooted.
Or you can tell her to disable internet or wifi on her phone.
P.S You said the guy used to work for Sprint, Is your Sis using a Sprint Phone?
Is her phone CIQ free?
wloftus had it down.
The only other thing I can think of is he has get password to a security app that can backup pictures and whatnot.
Bottom line is this sounds like a classic harassment case. Get him to text her about this for evidence, go to the police, he gets arrested and the girl is protected by a no contact order. Pretty simple.

I've hope it's obvious that I was joking about the violence as I do think the police should get involved if this guy is harassing her. The implication from the op is that this guy is doing this from a distance so the wifi hot spot does not seem to be the way he is doing it. Since he worked for sprint, he could be using a back door of some sort.

its not possible - andvwhen he works for sprint, you should go to his boss.
when he touched her mobile phone, you can go to court (when you want to)
has she enebled usb-debugging/adb access? disable it.
check all installed user apps if there is dome suspicious with ****loaads of permissions (camera, file access, microphone, etc)
lol enough to kick this guy in the ass with your rights

She doesn't connect to public wifi shes on sprints network so i doubt that app would help. I just had her do a hard reset on it. Hopefully that helps idk.. And yes its a Sprint phone Evo 3D completely stock on the latest software htc released.

Well if anything I'm just tryna get his whole name because the Sprint rep last night wanted to flag him and start a case. So far only know first name so I have to wait till I go again this week.
I doubt she would enable usb debugging she's not that kind of girl to know what that is. All she do is calls, text, fb, and some web browsing at the most..

Do any of you know anything about software at all? there is only one way to get into the phone and that is through the bluetooth. Other than that, very unlikely someone IN A MALL COULD DO THAT! there are hundreds of phones. plus, one threat like that to start off is subject to be terminated from any position he is in. HE likely got fired from sprint because he acts like he can do things he has no idea about.
However, 99.9% chance there is NO WAY the stupid small penis indian man can get into her phone. but one fact is that his face needs punched more than a few times... just make sure no one rats you out. make sure there is no one that sees you smash his face in. If the Indian doesn't learn a lesson now he'll just keep playing this game with everyone he walks into. He needs to learn one way or another.
Oh, I'm being nice too. If we were in any other country. he'd just have a bullet through his head.
However, I shouldn't even have said anything about the bluetooth part... but everyone needs to understand.. this is a topic we shouldn't even talk about. the reason is that kids that have no lives will use this information to attempt to find ways to spy on their gf's and stuff because they are low life fools.
anyway, to end this off.. I do thank everyone in here for being valued members of this forum... Remember do things responsibly. Anyone caught in here violating any law or creeping on others should be banned without question and legally should be held responsible for their actions.
to finish it completely off. the indian guy is a creep. he was fired from sprint for the same bs he doing to her. report him and have him fired again. PS. there is nothing in my comment that is racist, wrong, bad, blahblahblah. I'm a perfect little angel.

well, you can not only go into it via wifi. so my question: do you know anything? (exploits, etc)
if the mall has a open wlan, she should use secure sites only "https://blablabla.com" only... it is possible to hijack traffic, for example in malls "man in the middle method" (do not know why i know this.... )
another way to secure her phone is, to deactivate the installation of unsigned / non-market apps.
also, a password or sth other to unlock isnt a bad idea.
so, have fun - btw, you could ask that question for every android handset, op

There are WiFi sniffing tools on android. There are WiFi spoofing tools on android.
Possibility is there, change Gmail password never hurts.
But seriously, no sharing WiFi with other people and logging into private bank/Facebook/ other sites where your logged in with 50 other people on open WiFi. That stuff can be picked up, username/passwords.
Intimidation is the best answer...big guy comes up "alright who's the yutz messing with MY sister!"

FBI says not to root to avoid malware. Should I be concerned?

Saw this article today on BGR about Android security.
http://www.bgr.com/2012/10/15/android-security-fbi-malware-warning/
I understand about using safe apps and will probably try and Anti-Virus software. I love using ROMs and the last part of the article caught my attention about rooting the phone.
Usually we root to install ROMs. Could there be malicious ROM makers who build ROM's that steal information? I know I am being paranoid but could some hacker build a ROM that secretly sent your information to a hidden server? Is there any way people can check if the ROM is safe?
I go on the threads to read about how fast it is, how little space it uses, the modifications, etc but I never read to check up on the safety of the ROM. I am not trying to accuse any ROM makers and I am grateful to the community for having the ability to change our phones. However this article got me thinking about it.
FBI says a lot of things.

The 2 pieces of malware the FBI discovered are from phishing. One ad was for finding wealthy Asian males and the other for something else stupid.
Both require u to install an app on your phone as well. So, if your rooted u can install adaway and not worry about phishing ads in the first place. Second, if your dumb enough to click on ads u deserve a lil ass kicking.
Genius!
A rom maker could feasibly do some pretty bad things. In fact back in the day, when mui was first getting some attention, there were people who wouldn't run it and were convinced the rom was malware, just because it was something new and it was chinese. That of course turned out to false. As long as you know and trust the dev, you should be okay. Especially here on xda, what with the recognized titles, or other sites where a dev has built up a following. I might be a little wary of someone with a low post count and no title posting a rom, but still, the chances of a dev going rogue, and building a rom just to get you to run some piece of malware are pretty slim.
The reason they warn against rooting is more along the lines of preventing malicious apps from getting superuser access, in order to do things they shouldn't.

Using common sense when going to websites, viewing emails with links, or downloading and installing apps is the best way to stay safe..
All I need is for your phone to install apps from unknown sources and some clever java script. Doesn't matter if you're rooted or not
You don't need root to browse shady website, download warez and sideload them. I think Apple is paying the FBI.
Yeah I feel safer with Android, I know exactly what my phone is doing 98% of the time. Who knows what kind of 'skynet' stuff is going on behind the scenes at apple. There must be a reason that all of their equipment can only be used by their other equipment (no micro usb cable for instance)

Some guy in Germany or somewhere around there hijacked a bunch of iPhones using a built in remote feature for developers and charged everyone affected (I forgot how much) to release their phones. I believe they had to be jail broken but that still doesn't excuse allowing such a huge security flaw.
Yeah, I remember hearing about that awhile ago.
It's about like the never ending gun control issue. No matter how many people die from guns in "gun-free" zones, they still try to say that guns are dangerous and making a rule that only the good people will obey, and being forced to wait 45 minutes for a cop to show up, who often then shoots the wrong people when he does finally get there, somehow makes people safe from guns.
Being under your own control, and having everyone else under their own control, is always better than giving control over many to a few.
Most people are not bad, so even though it's true that some always are bad, and they will always be a problem, they are always the minority, and so as long as everyone has an equal footing, the bad guys can never win and they will always be a small problem, roughly equal to their percentage of the total population.
It's only when some relatively small group of power-holders convince everyone else to give up their equal footing, that the bad guys have a way to co-opt that unnatural imbalance and take advantage of it for themselves, allowing a few bad guys to harm everyone else.
Anyone who tries to remove fundamental control from you, either has an angle or is incompetent, no matter what good-sounding rationalizations they try to hide the truth in.
In other words, root is just, and the FBI trying to scare you away from root is unjust.
