Carrier IQ - Motorola Photon 4G

Carrier IQ seems to be on all of the android carrier roms. Some of the custom roms have an opt-in option. There are some posts in other forums. I figured that I would show this to the photon users.

Whats not?

I ran a scan with the app that was provided to check for it, and it didn't find anything. Here's to hoping that it really isn't there!

no really its not guys. im buddies with k0nane.. some of you may remember him from here or here? or any one of these other no-ciq mods
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286783
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342724
anyways ciq doesnt appear to be on this phone.. my best guess? its a global phone.. other carriers prolly dont want tracking metrics being run thru their network back to sprint..
thats just my take on it all tho

But it does have an ad service apk which does almost the same thing. Ever notice random ad text messages or crap in the notification dropdown. It was the first thing to go in skinnyrev0

sprintzone? yea thats common across devices tho

Sprint zone is technically not advertising though. It's designed to "provide important sprint information" though yes, most of that involves advertising for carious sprint services and partners. There is a setting in sprint zone to turn off notifications.

Fox News
Fox News just reported on CIQ and that they "say" they do not capture keystrokes but some tests have proven this incorrect. They may be capturing alot more then we think. so, that being said, we need to make sure to block or remove CIQ from android builds if present.

Fox news huh...lmao

HAHA I remember the excellent treads on the Epic forums. The guy who shall not be named

I just found "Data Collection 1.0" on the phone. Look at the permissions, very scary looking just like CIQ. And there are "Data Collector Service 1.0" and "Data Collector Provider 1.0" to go with it.

Its already been confirmed that the photon doesn't have carrier IQ

stop it and see what happens. you lose your connection to google immediatly and even then the service stops. ciq is a service taht cant be stopped so easily

http://m.gizmodo.com/5864116/these-are-the-phones-were-pretty-sure-dont-have-carrier-iq

i saw this on msn's home page today
http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/01/9143034-att-sprint-say-they-use-carrier-iq-but-dont-collect-personal-info
there is an app to test if u have it but, u have to be rooted.

Its cause now we're aware of it. That's like you bang a hooker, get an STD that has no immediate symptoms like the silent killer syphilis, then 1 year later you get a panel and it shows positive. What's not to understand? People had some sort idea that Google was keeping location based stats but many didn't know all of our keystrokes were being monitored at such a deep level hidden in our phones.

Best security app for 2011

So what is everyone's favorite security app of 2011- and why? I know some people think security apps are not necessary. If you feel security apps are not necessary, let us know why. Any security apps that don't work on the 3D? Don't keep that info to yourself! In light of the recent news reports about phone hacking, news about malware in the android market, and criminal activity concerning phones in general, I thought it was a timely subject to discuss. Please don't let the thread devolve into a flamefest! We are better than that!
Edit: I know the poll is kinda big but I made it big on purpose. I had no idea there were this many different security apps out there until I did the research for this poll and I figured I couldn't be the only one so I put em up here so others could find out about them too. If I missed your favorite app, I'm sorry! Just give a shout out for it in the comments!

It's nice to know you can access methods to: remote lock, track, alarm & wipe your phone when its not in your possession anymore.
That whole virus & malware mess (if we can even call it that) is easily avoided with the common sense app, I agree.
As for malware you don't really have to worry about anything atm. HTC has done a god job of patching all of the security holes they all use.
I think htc also may have something built into the phones to track then if they are lost but I doing know as I haven't set it up myself yet.

Isn't there a setting in our devices by default that allow you to find a lost or stolen Evo 3D? I haven't played with it and know nothing about it. I just remember disabling it because I heard it sucks your battery down pretty quickly.
Htcsense.com website is the one built into phone... Right now its a huge disappointment as many have reported it not working. It is in beta and when it works 100% it will be a great asset

look out is good tho only reason you would need a anti virus is if u are going crazy with the random apps on the market which have spy ware in them. Linux is pretty much virus free the only way you could get something is if you give it permissions to do so. I never need a anti virus.
Anyone familiar with "Phone Locator Pro" (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rvo.plpro)? It looks pretty nice, too bad they don't have a trial. :/
I use AegisLab Antivirus Free, the option Appscan is outdated.
Scan is pretty fast and lightweight, and according to author, they will support SD card scan soon.
I got Seekdroid on the amazon app store when it was the free app of the day and it seems to work really well. Plus, the website interface is very good/easy.
I believe they also just released a free "lite" version of the app if any want to check it out.
I was using lookout, but am trying myphone without it to see if it saves any battery..but may end up putting it back on, even if it doesn't work as some say, having that sense of mind that you're phone is "protected" is kinda relieving

Looking for app to track my wife?

I'm looking for an app I can install on my wife's phone that is hidden so that I can see where she is or has been via cell towers or gps. Doesn't need to be real time but I need to know if she has been where I think she has been. She is pretty dumb when it comes to her phone but has never had gps enabled and would probably notice the enabled icon. I'm pretty confident she is cheating on me and just need to know for sure before I confront her. Is there such an app?
I don't need a lot of features. Basically location history. Some place called spectorsoft has something but it is $70. ANy freebies out there?
Thanks!!
Just go to Google maps and sign her up on Latitude. Latitude will tell you where she was and is. Then after that, install Dexrex on her phone and you can see any, and all, texts she sends and receives. The best part is that it's all free. Then you can use Overview (which used to be free) to do similar things. Also, if you want to catch her on your PC, just install a keylogger.
Does she have Android smartphone? If she have, you can find such apps on Market. I needed that type of app before but unfortunately, we haven't got android on all device. Google Latitude is good too.

I don't condone your method.... But, I know where you are coming from.
Tasker is an amazing app. Not any type of tracking system specifically. But you can create a set of profiles and tasks where you could do something like send a txt to her. Something like "I love you." Or "how are you" or something inconspicuous. You can then program it to, upon recieving said message, turn on GPS for 1min, get a lock on her location and txt you back her location and then shut off GPS. You can also make it so if she looks back into her chat log. It won't show that her phone automatically sent that txt with her where a bouts.
I have something similar in case my phone is ever lost/stolen. Except my setup will also lock the phone, flash the leds, the camera flash, and make a loud noise.
Or you could just sit her down and talk about it....she will appreciate you more, because if she finds the apps you install.....theirs nothing worse than denying it was you who installed them (lying to her) when you have no proof she is lying to you. Your situation is nothing that can't be sorted out by talking about it. Have you got concrete evidence she's playing away? If you don't trust her....I'd learn to and quick because lack of trust is a killer for all relationships. Don't snoop around fishing dude....talk to her!

I have teenagers, so I definitely know where your coming from. My solution is an annual subscription (I think $12 per year, no more than $19.99) is "WaveSecure" by McAfee. Which I do admit if I EVER lost my phone, it is a blessing to have! I can go to a certain locked website by McAfee and not only be able to see where my phone is (without the user knowing) but I can lock it and send a alarm with a custom message. I can even pull pics and content from it. And you can't get into it or uninstall it once its set up on phone without a 6 digit password. Its mainly used if you have you phone stolen. It even notifies me if the SIM card is removed!
Latitude also works, but you have to configure her phone, and (like my teenagers) will eventually know how to turn it off.

Verizon and Rogers don’t use Carrier IQ, Vodafone and O2 “don’t collect info”
"and they’re now joined by iPhone users who discovered pieces of Carrier IQ code in all current models."
I've read that installing a custom ROM would get rid of this (if it had it at all). I installed the app that checks to see if it's installed on your phone and it wasn't on mine. Not that I don't trust Verizon (but I don't trust Verizon). I can't post links yet, but google Carrier IQ and look for "Carrier IQ: How To Find It..." article at techcrunch.com. That has the link to the app that will check your phone to see if you have. But like Alan Wolfe posted, Verizon "says" they don't install it, but still handy to check friend's phones.
Yea Vz did say there not using Carrier IQ, I don't trust them either.
I would not put it past them to use some other way to spy on it's user's.

Supercurio posted a CARRIER IQ detection app in the market. Seems like verizon has not been lying to us.
I would longer to think that verizon its watching us some other way though. Maybe they have their own proprietary way of doing so?
I wouldn't doubt VZW has stuff on our phones or are trying to get stuff on our phones. Who knows, maybe moto is in on it too. Its a game between users and carriers, going back and forth, they make it, we root it, they patch the root, we find another way and get bl unlocked, they patch both, we start again. In my mind its almost fun haha

I agree with the fun factor. But for me the
fun end's when they start spying and stealing
my personal information. What's the point of
having password's, firewall's , anti-virus etc.
When they (meaning Moto,Google,Verizon,
Comcast, Micro$oft,AOL,Apple and on & on)
have full access to everything on your phone,
PC.
And it's bad enough they have access to all
this but to store and build data base's that they
sell or get compromised is totally unacceptable.
But that's just My opinion I could be wrong
Probably why our bootloaders are locked. Something in the kernel? </tinfoilhat>
Yeah, its a little far over the line, but the rooting and bootloaders is kinda fun. But VZW doesn't use caller IQ or what ever it is. So until we find out for sure VZW/moto is or isn't spying on us, I don't really care. I'm not mad about the latest spying thing because it doesn't effect me. I still wouldnt put it past them though.

Can our phones get hacked by random people?

Ok so I have a 3D on my line which belongs to my sister. Well she works at the mall and some Indian guy that used to work for Sprint is telling her he hacks into her phone all the time and uses her internet and that if he wanted to he can access her photos too. idk man, you need to do some dental work.
I don't know if a "random" person could hack a phone. But:
1. Is the phone rooted? That would give a person more ability to do something bad.
2. There are "spy" software out there. But the guy would have had to have a few minutes alone with the phone.
3. Maybe install malware through an E-mail or text message.
But to use her phone for Internet access sounds pretty weak. Easier and better methods of doing that at a mall where public WIFI is all around.
Bottom line, if you are actually concerned, just have your sister do a factory restore, that wipes everything and then reinstall her apps one at a time validating all are suppose to be on her phone.

this thread is exactly the kind Papa Smurf posted about...basic networking rules...the ONLY way he can intercept her wireless internet signal is if she is connected to the malls wifi... thing is i personally have programs that will allow me to spoof ANY gateway that i am connected to and collect cookies, not to mention use them. i have a program that if i connect to a server that she is connected to i can kill her internet signal... i have one also to where i can connect into her phone or computer.. bottom line... if its wireless and a public server...it becomes public info... so if she stays off the malls wifi and uses just her providers internet connection then she will be fine...unless he clones her phone which he would have to steal first .... now.. prompoting violence is childish ...its not what the forum is for...if anything reprt the guy to the police and give him a record that will ride with him...

If that Indian guy (not me ) is using android phone or PC, he surely is using apps like FaceNiff, Cain & Abel, ANTI, ettercap, DroidSheep, NetCut etc....
So this app should help but it will not work to its full potential as your Sisters phone is not rooted.
Or you can tell her to disable internet or wifi on her phone.
P.S You said the guy used to work for Sprint, Is your Sis using a Sprint Phone?
Is her phone CIQ free?
wloftus had it down.
The only other thing I can think of is he has get password to a security app that can backup pictures and whatnot.
Bottom line is this sounds like a classic harassment case. Get him to text her about this for evidence, go to the police, he gets arrested and the girl is protected by a no contact order. Pretty simple.

this thread is exactly the kind Papa Smurf posted about...basic networking rules...the ONLY way he can intercept her wireless internet signal is if she is connected to the malls wifi... thing is i personally have programs that will allow me to spoof ANY gateway that i am connected to and collect cookies, not to mention use them. i have a program that if i connect to a server that she is connected to i can kill her internet signal... i have one also to where i can connect into her phone or computer.. bottom line... if its wireless and a public server...it becomes public info... so if she stays off the malls wifi and uses just her providers internet connection then she will be fine...unless he clones her phone which he would have to steal first .... now.. prompoting violence is childish ...its not what the forum is for...if anything reprt the guy to the police and give him a record that will ride with him...

I've hope it's obvious that I was joking about the violence as I do think the police should get involved if this guy is harassing her. The implication from the op is that this guy is doing this from a distance so the wifi hot spot does not seem to be the way he is doing it. Since he worked for sprint, he could be using a back door of some sort.

1. No
2. I know about the spy software stuff. I don't know if the guy ever had access to the phone. She did say she bought a case from him b4 and i wouldn't put it past her to put it on a strangers hands in her times of frustration. She's always having problems and going to someone for help.
3. Probably
And yea I guess I'll tell her to do a hard reset. Thanks!

its not possible - andvwhen he works for sprint, you should go to his boss.
when he touched her mobile phone, you can go to court (when you want to)
has she enebled usb-debugging/adb access? disable it.
check all installed user apps if there is dome suspicious with ****loaads of permissions (camera, file access, microphone, etc)
lol enough to kick this guy in the ass with your rights

If you want it free, the developer posted a free version for XDA users here ----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350941

She doesn't connect to public wifi shes on sprints network so i doubt that app would help. I just had her do a hard reset on it. Hopefully that helps idk.. And yes its a Sprint phone Evo 3D completely stock on the latest software htc released.

He no longer works for them he used to.
Well if anything I'm just tryna get his whole name because the Sprint rep last night wanted to flag him and start a case. So far only know first name so I have to wait till I go again this week.
I doubt she would enable usb debugging she's not that kind of girl to know what that is. All she do is calls, text, fb, and some web browsing at the most..

Do any of you know anything about software at all? there is only one way to get into the phone and that is through the bluetooth. Other than that, very unlikely someone IN A MALL COULD DO THAT! there are hundreds of phones. plus, one threat like that to start off is subject to be terminated from any position he is in. HE likely got fired from sprint because he acts like he can do things he has no idea about.
However, 99.9% chance there is NO WAY the stupid small penis indian man can get into her phone. but one fact is that his face needs punched more than a few times... just make sure no one rats you out. make sure there is no one that sees you smash his face in. If the Indian doesn't learn a lesson now he'll just keep playing this game with everyone he walks into. He needs to learn one way or another.
Oh, I'm being nice too. If we were in any other country. he'd just have a bullet through his head.
However, I shouldn't even have said anything about the bluetooth part... but everyone needs to understand.. this is a topic we shouldn't even talk about. the reason is that kids that have no lives will use this information to attempt to find ways to spy on their gf's and stuff because they are low life fools.
anyway, to end this off.. I do thank everyone in here for being valued members of this forum... Remember do things responsibly. Anyone caught in here violating any law or creeping on others should be banned without question and legally should be held responsible for their actions.
to finish it completely off. the indian guy is a creep. he was fired from sprint for the same bs he doing to her. report him and have him fired again. PS. there is nothing in my comment that is racist, wrong, bad, blahblahblah. I'm a perfect little angel.

well, you can not only go into it via wifi. so my question: do you know anything? (exploits, etc)
if the mall has a open wlan, she should use secure sites only "https://blablabla.com" only... it is possible to hijack traffic, for example in malls "man in the middle method" (do not know why i know this.... )
another way to secure her phone is, to deactivate the installation of unsigned / non-market apps.
also, a password or sth other to unlock isnt a bad idea.
so, have fun - btw, you could ask that question for every android handset, op

There are WiFi sniffing tools on android. There are WiFi spoofing tools on android.
Possibility is there, change Gmail password never hurts.
But seriously, no sharing WiFi with other people and logging into private bank/Facebook/ other sites where your logged in with 50 other people on open WiFi. That stuff can be picked up, username/passwords.
Intimidation is the best answer...big guy comes up "alright who's the yutz messing with MY sister!"

Red Bend Software

Thanks go to Urban Strata for helping clarify it's purpose, and to SteelH, il duce, -viperboy- and everybody else whose been helping look in to this.
Security issues are still always of interest, but if those are patched all that is left is for someone to remove any extraneous code here.
The APKs for it are:
HtcOMADM_SPCS.apk
HtcOMADM_SettingsPlugin_SPCS.apk - looks harmless (thanks SteelH)
HtcOMADM_Tool_SPCS.apk - has some questionable content
I apologize if we jumped the gun blaming htc for this, but with the reputation data mining companies have earned themselves it's not a very good feeling to find software from a company like that running without your knowledge.

Think it will be under red bend or vsense? Try and find it as well.
With a quick look I found this.. data/data

First thing I did was debloat so I haven't noticed it running, but somehow the /data/data/com.redbend.vdmc/ folder is still on my phone. Part of what got my attention is that I don't remember seeing it when I went through the system apps.
I've been swamped here lately so I was kinda hoping someone else has already had a chance to rip it apart. Even if we can opt out of it I still don't trust it, especially if it's this poorly protected.
edit: found it HtcOMADM_SPCS.apk
Great, wtf is wrong with HTC and Sprint? Leave the spyware out of android ffs!

It's hiding under something if it is running. That's all I can see for now too. Sorry for being obvious.
HTC has so much running, if theyre responsible then it is gonna be in with their shat.
I don't have the tools to monitor what's going out and where. Ciq was found in that manner. If redbend isn't stupid they will hide it better.
Maybe someone could get in touch with TrevE and see what he can figure out.

I'm looking into this.
Well, this is a little unsettling...
looking @ "tree.xml" in /data/data/com.redbend.vdmc/
there's some REALLY creepy code in there about data logs and server pulls, re-auths, there's even a command to upload (I think) some user info on data behavior to https://oma.ssprov.sprint.com/oma .....
I also see in the /ext/ directory there, they have 2 files:
libvdmengine.so
libvdmfumo.so
I also have no idea what the info inside "vdm.reg.xml" in the /shared_prefs/ points to but it loos like it may be injecting an xml line into another part of the system?
...more to come...
ok now looking in titanium backup for "com.redbend" it returned this app name:
vDM Client 1.0.2218232562.436999.426320
just reporting lol
It seems like this had a quick response when all the techblogs began to report about it. Maybe we should submit this to Engadget, BGR, Gizmodo, etc. and see what kind of feedback we can get back from Sprint/HTC about it?
Damn these fing companies.... Is it enough we have uncle Sam on our tails

and you now cannot update your PRL and profile
just discovered this.
I am pushing the 3 apks back one at a time until I know which does what.
so far, the settingsprovider one put the "system updates" back into my settings menu, but I still couldn't update

Ok so I pushed back all but the _tool_ one and can update my stuff.
Sadly it looks like they built dependencies into these
Hopefully the more talented people can find a way to fix this.
I'll keep the tool apk out of my system and see how it goes, I do still have signal and data.
Also that app name I listed earlier in TiBu is installed again, must be one of those first 2 apks.
