I have been messing with android on my blackstone for a while now and would love to run it on my athena, I have a copy of 1.0 android that boots that was posted ages ago on here, and have tried to no avail to boot a later version either 1.5 or 2.0.1.
I feel that its pretty close but need someone with some linux/android experience as I think the problem lies in the initrd file.
With this is mind if there is enough interested I would like to see how many people would be willing to donate to a developer/developers to get this running on the athena?
I have seen bounty threads before and they seem to work, so post if you interested in donating to the cause.
What about perfectng the wm6.5 ROM along side the Android for takers?
Thanks mate.
in all honesty i have a x7500 im actually going to sell my iphone and get a x7510 just to have them both .. if im gonna get rid of an iphone i dont think i'd be going to an android
i too am very excited about this as have android 2.1 working on Blackstone so you would like to see it om here. i am not a dev in that sense but i am happy to contribute in any way.........cash not a problem
By the looks of it not many people want android for athena? for anyone who does bear with me as I am spending a huge amount of time behind the scenes working on trying to port 2.0.1 with some help from some experts
Would find Android an interesting idea
Hello avergerpenguin,
Would be very interested in seeing this happen, I have been keeping an eye on your work for WM 6.5 but not yet had time to try flashing one of the roms but if your work on there is anything to go by then I'm sure this will be good. Is this going to be full rom for the phone or run as an app over the top of win mobile?

At present it is not possible to run android without winmo, however mitchy has created a rom for diamond that only loads the drivers etc needed and then autoloads android meaning that you cant get to the winmo underneath.
But firstly I need to compile a working android kernel, see what does and doesnt work and then go from there and possibly create a android only rom, but depends on functionality
I am in avengerpenguin
Id love it on the x7510
Android on Athena
I would love to have Android on my Athena, or even Maemo5
Hey Avengerpenguin, I am VERY VERY interested in Andriod on my Athena. I would love it. I am happy to make a donation to help this along if there is a real chance of us getting it going. I wish I knew how to develop so I could help out that way, too.
New Advantage user also interested in Android. I flipped my mytouch to pick up a G1 to use Android and an Advantage for everything else!
Looks like we're preparing to declare against the new dell mini 5 tablet. Its neat to see how ahead of their time these athenas really were.
Also interested in Android on Athena
Now that it looks like WinMo is a dying OS (no new versions after 6.5), I'm also interested in Android.
The new Windows Phone 7 isn't going to be based on WinMo, so I have nothing to gain by staying with Micro$oft software.
Would love to avoid buying a new phone for as long as possible. The Athena has everything I need in it; all I'd have to do is obtain new programs, which I'll have to do anyway.
I am late to the party, but ya, android would be awesome to have. I still have my athena kicking around, and would love to really use it again.
Very interest in Android
Please do this. Thanks for all your work
I'm 100% looking forward to using my Athena again if Android 2.1 can be made to work. It's a sensible OS moving forward given that wm6.5 is towards the end of its life cycle.
Cheers.

EAGLESTEVE!
thought you had dropped off the planet, nice to see you still around
Regards
Jay
Hi Jay,
I went off and bought a Touch HD. Sold it and got a 3G, followed by a 3gs. Hence the absence. But I still have my Athena with an almost dead battary though. Each time I turn it on I'm always attracted by it's hugh and beautiful screen. Somehow I find myself unenthusiatic about using winmo applications again after using iPhone, sorry to say. That's why I hope to see Android on it. It would really Be an awesome device once again I reckon if that's done.
BTW, which is the newest and most popular ROM you guys are using these days? Might try it out for fun before Android is available for my Athena.
Cheers and good to be home.

Me personally, I have been using Lennie's 6.5 rom. I have not liked 6.5 at all before Lennie had his latest V3.00 out, and now I quite like it. I would still say that 6.1 has the edge for ease of use and speed, but Lennie's latest offering is much improved on speed and looks. We dont have many cooks left on here now, so people seem to be trying out some of the old stuff again. We seem to be getting posts from roms way-way back now. I have a G1 myself now, and very good they are to. I do like to keep up with the WM stuff still.
Hi , lot of developper Jerpelea , Zdzihu & TripNRaVeRs and i dont forget Binary & Maxrfon & goroh "
try hardly to put custom rom for our X10 ,
strategy : why focusing on 2.2 or 2.1 AOSP : 2.3.1 is more attractive we have a lot of delay stop viewing the past :
Synergy : each developer work hard but alone "not enough fast" maybe the creation of one Dev-team & one project " avoid the personal conflicts" is a better way to escape from SE Curse they develop 2.1 and 2.2 is already in the Market
PS: i am very proud by our Devs , I only think that 1+1+1+1 ..... is better than BIG One
its a democracy but consensus is better
+1
agree with u , all of them are proffisor alone but if thy work together we don`t know what they can do !
I support your initiative. I would love to have ONE great ROM (with full hardware support) rather than several "half implemented" ROMs like we have today.
IMO most developers here prefer to work alone (don't know if it's related to donations...), but it's really easy to see that if all of them join a single project we would definetly have a better and more optimized ROM.
One good thing is that Google seems to slow down the new major releases to two a year, so our developers will also have more time to debug and keep up.
I can only assume that they have put a lot of time looking at and understanding how the previous versions run, now they have an understanding they are putting it to good use and developing us a custom rom free of charge. To inhance our phones
I dare say they are probably looking at the gingerbread stuff now but you can only you can only do what you can do, there is no point stopping a development everytime new software came out because that way you would never have anything finished.
Patience is key, these guys do have lives, there is a order to everything and just because you dont understand it doesnt mean it is wrong
the dev's are amazing and i wish i had the knowledge to help more, icecream is coming out in the summer will the devs be expected to down tools and move on from gingerbread then?
just be patient and let the devs do their magic
My (limited) understanding is that since the bootloader is still locked, they are developing these custom ROMs on the existing 2.1 kernel that SE has put out for the X10. That means that certain core components are Android 2.1, and can't be replaced without bootloader access.
As such, it makes sense that the further an OS version is from 2.1, the more likely it is that it will require specific features not available in the 2.1 kernel.
So developing stock 2.1 for the X10 would be easiest, 2.2 would be more difficult, 2.3 even moreso, and so on.
maybe its true but developing 2.1 AOSP or 2.1 with sense take a ot of time and confir the stupid idea from SE Eclair 2.1 plus SE soft is better than Froyo ,
Creating a team will reduce time of developement and may be improve the quality of the rom build , my idea it just to say that and unify the X10 community in supporting one effective project thant wasting a lot of creativity & effort in incomplete work its easy to say the difficulty is to DOING the Job
Just a little bit of insight here from someone who isn't a developer of ROMS....
I agree that combining their efforts would most likely give us better results with regards to hardware. Here's what I think may be happening. Now that they're able to create functioning ROMs, they're each taking the time to hammer out their skills. When you learn something new, you generally spend your time redoing the same thing over and over until you've got it down pat.
That being said, they're each learning more and more as they attempt new ROMs. I think once the fascination of "Hey I got a working port of *this* ROM first!" wears off, maybe they'll work together to create a fully functioning ROM. Who knows, one of them may actually sit still for a moment and finish up one of their own ROMs.
I hope that all of the developers working on different ROMs at the very least keep a line of communication open between them so as to share fixes and work arounds.

Yes! I Agree With You!!!!

I love all the dev here, but i too just don't get it..
either i get a working camera or working wifi ? Come ON...
i hope you guys see this posts as friendly talk, we are so lucky that we have all of you here you all understand the need of one functional AOSP Rom 2.2, 2.3 whatever
I feel the same way maybe the devs should team up and create a monster ROM that works.
I agree. It's been proven time and time again, teams work better than individuals. Please unite Devs! Think of what could be accomplished
I havn't even tested a ROM yet since their all incomplete, simple as that.
All the different ideas and "wishes" posted on this thread are of course appealing but until the bootloader is cracked it's practically impossible to have a fully working ROM on any other version other than the 2.1, at least from a short term perspective.
Correct me if im wrong, but from my understanding they started to work with 2.1 just to make it simpler to mod the code to 2.2 later.
The reason is that SE have released some code for 2.1, but of course not for 2.2. So they used SEs 2.1 code to develop the 2.1 AOSP rom. And could therefore much easier convert the code to 2.2.
It seems like you guys haven't been paying attention to dev work for the x10. Maybe it's because you didn't lurk the sub-forum since the beginning or maybe you don't understand what the devs are actually doing.
The devs ARE working together. jerpelea, zdzidu, bin4ry, goro-kun, maxfron, and many others DO communicate.
What one person said about having 2.2+ functions are strictly related to the kernal and bootloaders is the final word. Sony implemented special drivers for the camera and video decoding.
Until someone writes the drivers from scratch AND unlock the bootloader, we will have less than 100% functioning 2.2+ roms.
on that 2.3.1 HTC rom camera is working ... if they can get the BT and Wifi working it will be awesome . but i have a question . will we get the (MT) on these roms after SE release? i mean for 2.2 and 2.3

Yep.
Me neither.
And only because the camera and HD are not working

The htc rom mentioned by you is 2.1. That thread is for 2 roms. 2.1 htc and gingerbread. So no, camera is not working on 2.2+ yet. Z got some progress making the camera atleast respond, but so far, if he implements full camera function, he looses other key functions in the rom. Not a good trade.
Sent from my x10 running 2.2
No pressrue on the devs and they can do what they please with their work. But as other have said it sounds like a great idea. Any devs care to comment on this idea?

Hiya People
I have looked before about putting android on the Athena but nobody has come up with a working solution I think its time we started this back up from scratch.
I am up for helping with development surely in this collective there are people who could pitch in and do there part im going to look at putting android 2.3 gingerbread on the athena.
if anybody is interested please do speak up
i dunno anything about cooking, but i can beta test to hell whatever you guys come up with ^_^
Android on athena is still problem, there are no kernel drives for ati w2284, diskonchip, 3g, sd. So y can cook some android distro, but these things dont work and those system is unuseable. Athena boots for me from external usb stick, but its still early to cook android system. It needs some person with good C programing to modify existing drivers for athena
Hell,I'm in.......

Hell, yes sir.....I'm in. After all I learn since,Ubuntu 8.04 on HTC Shift,I beleive there is a way to do so....And after all i learn through ubuntu,Mint8,Backtrack3,fedora11 to 14. I'm sure there is a way....I will start doing research on it right now,but were should i start at.The best ways of getting the anwser,is dealing with dudes on Mirc or IRC.Trust me,After all they said and done to me,as in Aircrack with backtrack3 & Ubuntu 8.10 hell i can't wait untill we become HTC X7500 Advantage Android!
I beleive it could be interesting challenge. I have never develop anything similar (enterprise systems only) - so, can you give me links to start with. I want to help and get Android on my Advantage.
I tryed to compile kernel from ltg and some other repos with no success. I only have one working binary-only haret image that boots. Im interested in dualboot androd and just linux with X. If anyone have source of kernel that actually boots and support display adapter plz post.
you go, make me happy.
i use my athena every day, and i wanted to see android on it for years now.
could you use something out of the androidathena project from back in 2008.
I will come back to see if there is progress in this project, there are a lot of people who had made a beginning and then suddenly stopped, hope you will make it working.
Hell Yeah!!!

This link is an All-in-one release Android on Athena file(click on the link above)
This is what the link says:

Hello everyone... I'm back with a new update! I finally got the touch screen working! Still have a lot of work left of course.
If you want to play with it, you can get it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/118229739/Android-Athena-05282008.exe.html. This is an "All-n-1 Release". Just copy the exe to your sd card and run. After clicking, it could take up to 20 seconds to boot. Be patent!
As always, this is work in progress... Thanks for testing!

This is the all in one file with explanation on how to install.
I installed it, but do not know how to use the config and patch.
maybe you can, it should work.
maybe from there someone could pick it up and make a nice android Froyo or Gingerbread for us.
Thanx in advance.
Everything is in here

As a long time 7501 user, I use it every day even with sucky WM on it, I am glad to see some people interested in reviving a truely great machine.
athena kernel in-progress
Hello everybody,
So, I am working on the project of athena linux porting. You can find a help on the AthenaInstall link of athena topic from the htc-linux.org wiki
It is a kernel 2.35 for athena and the devices ( screen, keyboard, microdrive, touchscreen, power ...) should work.
You could also install an angstrom rootfs.
I expect after some improvements and corrections to build an athena kernel for android .
Good Luck
I don't know how many started this undertaking. And came up short.
So good luck !!!!
i had always meant to do some developing but the drop in activity i realized when i moved from the sensation to the rezound really compelled me to start plus i have some work that i really have to do and really dont want to do so you know how it goes. Anyway to it
i started by googling how to build android roms which lead me to xda university giving me a nice expaination as to the various parts of android which i was already familliar
another search lead me to the offical how to build android from source page. i had a few concerns so i thaught i would ask here
i have knowlage building various web applications(php,js,ect) and not the let the fromework so this for me kinda apps i like thinking and innovating. i have a little experience with c++(i was at the stage of learning a gui when my old laptop crashed) so i think i have atleast good enough programming experience to catch on to java at a nice pace. Am currently reading and following googles nice little guid on developing android. Am in the process of setting up work envo (already got ubuntu 12.04 up). and thaught i would just leave a post here to see if anyone had any advice for me?
what i wanna do is be able to port for us,build original roms AOSP they call it for us, build and or port sense roms for us and eventually get to the point where i can get us sense5 or help neo(or any other dev) help us get sense 5. oh and i think i would like to build/modify kernels as well. oh oh and being able to invent exploits to get root or s-off for devices i might get in the future.
Question: while i was reading i was seeing where the buiding process was doing alot of synceing with google servers ect. i dont actually want to submit whatever garbage i might write to them while am testing so im still on the right track following the guid here correcto??
short version: I wanna build android custom roms ect not just edit files and put it out am i on the right tract following the guid here (i already know a lil programming)? http://source.android.com/source/initializing.html
any advice/resources/links welcomed
oki am on the page that says "building and running" i dont see anything for our device am guessing thats because development from aosp has stopped for us and thats where ppl like neo and cyanogen make thier magic. what is the next tut or read for me?
Try this. You could always pull Neo's CM 10.2 repos instead of the 10.1.

Hello!
Now, who am I, I am a dude who got sick of his android phone and decided to take the initiative!
Well, you see, many many Android users get sick of their phones, of the bloatware by the manufacturers and their user interface, we got tired of not getting the updates and falling back!
So what do we do, we root and probably install a Custom ROM, pretty good eh, android is about choice after all!
So, what happened..I tried doing the same, didn't get satisfaction from the ROMs available for my phone, and now I am stuck
As they say, if you want something done, do it yourself, which is why I decided to take upon myself the responsibility of making a Custom ROM for the user, I want to leave the source code out there, for everyone and anyone to tinker with it and port it to his phone, and I wanted to create the ROM the Android master race deserves...created by a user for users
You might think "This is all wonderful, but where do I come in?"
You, sir, are the user, you are the one this project is created for, and I need your help
I need you guys to help me create this ROM, I need you to tell me what you want to see in that ROM (Marshmallow), I want you to tell me what features are needed and what features are desired, what do you guys think Android M lacks and what shouldn't be touched, what should I improve and what should be left alone, I need your help to make something you would want to use.
HEY, ANDROID IS ALL ABOUT CHOICE AFTER ALL, AND I WANT YOU TO MAKE THE CHOICE!
P.S.:If you could name your phone, what UI or CustomROM you're running (or any CustomROMs you have used before) and tell me what features were implemented there and I should recreate or improve, the pros and cons of your ROM
P.S.S: I know I am asking for too much here, but as you might have thought, this looks like lots of work.
If you are interested in helping or being part of the UberROM project (name subject to change), tell me here, if you're a dev with experience on porting ROMs and tinkering with the AOSP, let me know, I could use all the help I could get!
Thank you!
