Download update using hspa? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to just download the update over hspa? I have unlimited data, and won't be anywhere near a wifi point for the next few days
Swyped from my Motorola Atrix 4g using XDA Premium App

The way I've always understood it and applied it was, the update has to be started with a wifi connection but can be finished on the carrier data plan. There is no way to start the download on the carrier data plan.

I ran into this problem too. Seems like there needs to be an app to fake wifi. Iphone had this app, think it was called my 3g.

You have a laptop on u? I guess if u have unlimited data, use it to tether to ur laptop, download ur update n way to go...
just a thought...

3G and E signal

After the fail update OTA. I flash using odin and every thing work fine, including ap mobile. However, my phone data signal now seems like it sticks more on E rather than 3G. Before the update, I always got 3G. Now I got E almost all the time. I only go over 5gb last month,6.4gb to be exact. I hope tmobile does not throttle my data plan. Any ideas? Thanks.

I do not think that has anything to with your connection status. Check your settings to make sure, you are using epc.tmobile.com
Yes it is. Still stuck on E most of the time. Once in a while, it switch to 3G, but when I browse or use app that needs data plan, it switch back to E. I never experience this before. Any ideas, please?

Help please

Hey guys, my wife's photon has a terrible data speed. I don't know why, were both running the exact same software/prl. I've wiped the phone and reloaded all the updates and her data connection is still slow. Side by side speed tests between her phone and mine show my phone is grabbing 2.2mb, and her phone is struggling to reach 100 Knossos. Any ideas????

That's crazy, subscribed to see how this plays out. Both are connected to the same network, right? (I know, unlikely you're comparing 4G to 3G, just making sure )
I have actually had a similar issue before. And had sprint reset my data and such, and it fixed the problem. But over time it went back to being hit and miss with the good speeds.
As stated, have Sprint look at her data plan. All carriers have the ability to slow you down or speed you up.
Funny, @ a month back I looked at Sprints "Unlimited Data" fine print. To make this short, we do have unlimited data, BUT, if your using your device as a server, sending out mass Spam, or (and yes it states this) if you turn on your webcam and set it on the table for several hours, the will turn down your bandwidth for that billing cycle.
I did the above because a old friend is long time AT&T iPhone user on Unlimited Data. AT&T decided to cap new users at 5Gb but last month decided to slow down old users after 5Gb. Not charge them, but put them on a leash.
Hey guys thanks for the responces. Problem solved!!!! I had to use rsdlite to change the software back to the old mr3 release, and manually update her phone to the latest software and then I had to factory reset like 6 times and finally it her data speeds increased. Now there were they need to be.......oh and I wasn't talking about 4g speeds, I was refering to the 3g data speeds. I have an air rave at home. I usually test the 3g speeds atleast once a week. Its a good way to keep up with q.o.s. on the air rave. Thanks for all the responces everyone.

So the speeds were slow when it was connected to your home airrave? Then I don't think its a problem with sprint or your phone but rather your home internet connection. But if you're not connected to the airrave and outside then that's a diff problem

Very true, however I own a photon, and when I do a speed test while being connected to the air rave, and my numbers are high, I know something isn't right with my wife's phone. I also run a speed test on my internet connection at home to ensure I'm getting every megabyte I pay att for lol.

market apps wifi only

my photon only downloads apps when on wifi not 3g. how do i fix it so it works on 3g???????
3G Data is too slow to use to download applications, it can take about 15 minutes to even begin to download an application. Sprint 3G is about 10kbps, if that, and that is not fast enough to download an application.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Umm no thats 1x, I average 600-2800 kbs. You Sir may not have 3g in your area.
To answer the orginal question, really big apps require because not everyone has unlimited data.

My mistake, I was wrong, my data speeds are 630kbps+, and Sprint is planning to do 3G/4G data speed, and voice upgrades within the next 6 months.

go to market and hit menu and it should have the settings on how to change it
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
I think there is something else going on. Mine works as expected, but my buddies photon will only download over wifi too. I made sure that all the settings are the same and even uninstalled the market updates, cleared the data, and let it reinstall. Its pretty weird. The only thing that I have not looked at is the build.prop. He is on the latest stock ROM and is not rooted. We are in a 3g area for what it is worth.
Any other ideas?
Go to settings, Battery and data manager, Data saver. if that is enabled it will not download apps or app updates unless you are on wifi.

'Unofficial tethering' on Verizon?

My internet is down for everyone in the country, they appear to have fallen off the grid. As such, I've decided to try tethering for the first time, and it works, but I'm reading all sorts of older messages online saying that Verizon will cancel my grandfathered unlimited data and sign me up for the tethering plan. Is that still going on or will they give me some sort of warning or something? I need to have internet right now so I'm risking it.
Are u against flashing cm7? If u do u may tether all u want...
Sent from my MB870 using XDA
I don't have time to read into that right now, I'm just wondering if I'm going to get switched over without warning by Verizon for using this app while I'm rooted... it's working fine, I just don't want any surprises.
When I was on stock rooted I used PDANET without any problems and i too have any unlimited grandfathered data plan. The app is available on the market.

Same here. I frequently use PDAnet where I can't get WiFi and have for the past two years including watching movies. No issues. There is a hide tether feature as well on the desktop app.

Which tether app works for you? I tried many and doesn't work

I have AT&T Note with stock ICS (rooted of course). I tried many different tethering apps and so far none of them works. I have tried, for example,
- FoxFi
- Wifi Tether for rooted user 2.3-beta1
I tried to change the configuration, such as these:
- Change Device Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
- Change Setup Method: Netd (master) - DO NOT use Netd-ndc
The problem is that the tethering starts, other device (laptop, tablets, etc.) can see the hotspot network, but it's either:
- No traffic sent
- Network is slow, like 0.1Kbps
I know it's not the Note or the other devices connecting to it, because:
- When tethering is running (FoxFi, Wifi Tether, etc.) I can still browse the Internet from the Note (not from other device) just fine
- All the other devices (laptop, tablets) can connect to the Internet when connected to other Wifi (home network, Clear hotspot, etc.)
So which one works for you?
I'm non rooted ICS and FoxFi has always worked for me. Have you tried the new version? It limits how long free users can use the app (not sure how much) but it might be worth a shot...

Did you sideload FoxFi? It's no longer shown from Google Play app in the Note, I only see the Key App ($6).
Do you not have the tether built into your rom? I have always just used the "stock" tethering under setings menu.

I thought this is only of you have the tethering plan with the carrier? Wouldnt they force me to pay for the tethering plan if I use the built in app?
I don't tether much, just in emergency like in airport.

Hello, go here: www.foxfi.com/bin
This will download the latest version of Foxfi to your Note. It does state that there are some limits to free usage but I don't know if that means it cuts you off after fifteen minutes or what. I also have a previous apk of Foxfi somewhere in my Note's download folder that doesn't mention a need to upgrade to the paid version.

Normal $30 plan / month... "unlimited" data for use on the Note. AT&T told me tethering cost another $20 / month.
I just freeze "Tether Manager" with TiBu and it works perfect..
*Seems I didn't.. don't see tether manager in my list anymore.. I suppose it just works for me..
Say it, Don't spray it.

Not that lucky; I had an unlimited plan too. AT&T began throttling after unlimited plans went over 3gb. I never did but I knew someone who was throttled. It took two minutes to open a text email.
Don't take this as criticism of AT&T, everyone throttles now except for Sprint. And I've had nothing but great experiences with their phone and data service, customer service, etc. I really like AT&T but didn't have a need for their unlimited plan anymore. I'd rather pay $10 if I go over 3gb than be throttled.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
I've been throttled once, and it wasn't that bad - the speed would be normal for the first few moments of a connection and the slow down. So small data transfers were fine, but streaming video etc. was not.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
I use the one built into my room on cm10. Works perfect. At&t hasn't throttled me nor have they added a tethering plan. Everything works very perfectly.

Oh man! I just remembered my colleague was on T Mobile. That was insane, render your phone useless throttling. Good to know AT&T leaves some basic functions alone with its throttling. I may be in the minority but I really like AT&T and have always been well served by them.
While a part of me really dislikes the idea of throttling I can understand how some people killed it for us moderate users: another colleague of mine used to stream Netflix all the time, download torrent files and tether to his laptop constantly at home. One month he used more than 80GB.

It's actually 5GB for our LTE Notes. The older 3G plans are 3GB. Personally I don't want to pay another dime, and I rarely go over about 3.5-4GB/month, but the one time I did, I'm glad I still had data without having to pay another $10 just to get a few MB additional (I barely went over).
