Has any one had the ability of dual boot? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was wondering If dual boot was available? Or switchable Roms?
My idea was froyo/ gingerbread, then honeycomb through dock/ hdmi connection?
Anyone heard of something like this?
Desire is the source of all suffering.

sorry, that's just a pipe dream. even if it were possible, our phone can't do if because of the boot loader.

Excellent progess on CyanogenMod

Great success!
Atleast partly, I haven't actually flashed anything. So far I've played around a bit with Goro_kn's (sp?) splboot.ko and it appears to be working just fine. So does softbooting boot.img from the modded cyanogen build.
After that I kinda wussed out, I'd rather wait and see if anyone manages to flash the boot.img and get that working before I go any further.
But great work, seeing fastboot working totally MMD.

Yeah, it looks like I got a little ahead of myself. I tried the classic "fastboot boot boot.img" and it appeared to be uploading the image but it just hung there.
And poking around my old memory banks I remembered the old syntax. Booting with "fastboot boot kernel ramdisk_recovery.img" yields the same result.
It's been way too long since I last messed around with fastboot.

Did you manage to boot into CyanogenMod at all, using goroh_kun's method?
I know what you mean about fastboot though... I have used it for ages, since I gave my T-Mobile Pulse to my little brother.

What could we do to solve this?
I think it involves some more editing of the custom SPL (which I don't have a clue how to do ) and/or checking, then rebuilding the boot.img to make it the correct size for fastboot...

I'm thinking I should hold off on trying a little more seeing how the real devs are obviously booting this. I'm guessing I'm just missing something somewhere and it's a nightmare to navigate the threads here.

Hold your horses guys....well be quite a while before we have a fully useful 2.2 cm6 as in addition to the bootloader they also have to get drivers working for x10 hardware. What good is cm6 if the camera, wireless and calling doesn't work?
Give them time to nut it all out.

Naturally, but it's still nice progress. And the fact that the X10 shares large portions of it's platform with the HTC Desire is bound to help. Since both have use Snapdragon they share the same GPS, cellular modem, audio, network, cpu, graphics etc. Looking at the spec sheets from Qualcomm they're essentially the same device but with different shells, cameras and screens since the Snapdragon kit does everything.
cannot wait to get the benchmark result of Xperia X10 running Android 2+. I'm hoping X10 can get somewhere around Nexus One benchmark.
I have never thought about that, if they do have the same components, the drivers should be the same for each shared component?
Haha its kind of funny how the only differentiating factor is screen, shell, and camera!
Most likely they don't have the same hardware.
Sound, camera, display are 100% different.
RF chip might be different too and in this case drivers are needed for wifi, gps, bluetooth, 3g.
The best part, the drivers are most likely available in the kernel sources released by SE and they only have to be ported to the newer kernel.
Sometime changes in the code is needed, some time only copy the driver from a tree to the other is enough.

[Q] Dual Boot

Does anyone know if any similar devices like the notion ink adam are capabile of dual booting? It would solve all sorts of problems. Because instead of having to pick a rom and do with out dual core support (froyo) or without hardware acceleration (honeycomb and gingerbread) we could conviently switch. In a perfect world I suppose. I'd pay to have someone figure it out.

Agree. My understanding and experience was that it just doesn't handle HC ROMS well.
sorry to bring an old thread back from the dead, but I am curious if anyone has tried bootmanager recently? Dual boot would be nice, but don't want to try if it is still bricking gtabs...
if you want a tablet that dual boots...get a nook color, it's fun and easy and thanks to the people here at XDA it's able to dual or even triple boot.

they have hacked the hell out of that thing, but I already have a gtab. It looks like the boot manager app has a lot fail safes in it now, in which I think it would be pretty hard to brick. I might give it a go...

Thanks for the post, but this isn't talking about the boot manager application. I just set it up on my Rezound, and it works great. It is fast and easy to switch between ROMs. I am going to give it a go on the gtab, and will report back if anyone is interested.

It was meant as an FYI, given that a) aabbondanza, above, has reported that boot manager can brick the gTablet and b) the VS gTablet is not an officially supported device.
BTW, how did the boot manager experiment go?

[Q] Locked Bootloader and Custom Roms

I've been looking around the web for a while and can't find an answer.
Does the locked-bootloader on the RAZR make it impossible to install a custom ROM on the phone?
I really want to get this phone but only if there is a chance I'll be able to put a custom ROM on it.

Here is a quote from a user on Rootzwiki about the locked bootloader (user Soapinmouth posted this, not me)
I disagree i think the razr is going to be the hottest selling Droid since the og. You have to remember the people that even know what a bootloader is are an extremely small % of buyers, and then there's those that do and still buy it like me.
In all honesty the locked bl is way overblown, id say a good 75% of the community has no idea what the locked bl even prevents.
It
DOES NOT prevent custom roms
DOES NOT prevent overclocking
DOES NOT prevent rooting
It
Does prevent custom kernals
Well that's a relief, so a chance MIUI would be on this bad boy?

I cannot WAIT for overclock. Push this thing to 1.8GHz+ and I'll keep it the full two years. With proper memory management (custom user values and/or 4.0) this phone is as future proof as you're gonna find in the next 6-12 months. Who wants Samsung plastics and no Gorilla Glass?
Isn't overclocking going to be out of the question without a custom kernel?

Lol why would you want to OC that high? Only benefit you'd get are higher bench scores and maybe a few more fps in some games. Also imagine the heat as this phone alreayd runs fairly hot. I doubt there is anything in Android that requires even more than a 1ghz DC. Pretty much all the performance issues we see now are due to poor coding. Also the software doesn't atm doesn't have proper hardware acceleration I believe? iPhone 5 with a 800mhz DC, hell even a single core has a smoother UI than most Android phones. Not an apple fan or anything, just stating what I have seen and facts. Good example is the HTC Rezound is 300 mhz "faster" than the RAZR and the RAZR performs quite better. Hardware is nice yes, but it's nothing without the proper software optimizations. If we do get to overlock I'd probably just pump it to 1.4 - 1.5 , since I think atm that's the point before you get diminishing returns.
Edit: Speaking of temps battery/cpu are at like 103-104 while watching Netflix with full screen brightness. I wonder how high the clock speeds can go without bumping voltage.

Well, Moto has explicitly said it will be unlockable so unless they were purposefully lying, I would say yes.
I read here (sorry it's in french forum) the bootloader is lock .... Because I must do a choice betwen GN and RAZR and I like more the Razr but if it s lock I chose the GN ....
When do you think we can say really if the bootlader is really lock or not ?
The BL is locked. However, it'll be unlocked with ICS update, coming in late december this year or january 2012.
The locked BL will make you unable to flash proper custom ROMs, only "hacked" ones and it isn't possible to make a decent and really performancewise custom ROM at the moment with a locked BL.
It will prevent you to install custom kernels, too.
Anyway, don't worry, from the statement Motorola made, if they won't unlock it with ICS (they will as they've done the same thing on ATRIX w/GB) they'll be suable as they've made a public statment confirming a thing that has made us to buy a 560 euros device.
Thanks for that, I hope because I prefer this phone ....

positive, i'm absolutely sure it will get unlocked. Motorola already said that several times now..
So a locked bootloader will not prevent one from installing a custom ROM but only a custom kernel?
What's the difference between a ROM and kernel?
The XT720 is locked and had miui, overclocking and about a dozen roms.
Besides, I thought safestrap basically solves this problem for us?

[Q] Screen On / Off Animation (not power up/down)

I was wondering if there is a way now that we have root to enable the Gingerbread on / off animation that HTC removed, without having to flash a new ROM?
This is different than the power up / restart / down animation that is listed elsewhere in this forum.
Thanks!
I just searched around, and maybe it's lack of proper wording but all I turned up was "it's in Gingerbread" Nothing relating to how to activate/deactivate/change it. What I would surmise from all of this is that HTC chose not to implement it in their build, so an AOSP build would/should have it vs the HTC build.. Sucks but it seems like all we have right now.
Of course the last link I try, I find this: http://droidmodderx.com/old-school-crt-animation-for-gingerbread-tv-off/
Don't go flashing it, but we should be able to pick it apart and determine what we need to add in.
I was able to add it in but HTC messed something in the code up and the animation plays extremely slow. I'm still looking around to see if i can figure out how to speed it up and once i do it'll be in my rom.
Awesome. This is my first Android and I've seen it in videos. Seems pretty cool!
u can try spare parts+ to speed up the animation.

Negative, according to Newt and Chingy, the animation does work but there's something within the OS that slows it down dramatically, so it's pretty much useless.
We'll have this soon enough, the dev's are awesome and they'll figure it out. I do like having those animations.

Paranoid Android has a hybrid tablet mode where you can chose some apps to display in tablet mode.
I used it for a while with my lapdock, I installed dolphin browser to use in tablet mode with lapsock.
Not great but workable.
I have however switched back to maxblur 5 with Ubuntop as I needed more functionality.

Short answer: Currently, no.
Webtop/dock requires Blur in order to work, or so the devs say. Since there's no official ICS rom, there's no blur and Webtop. I believe a DEV was able to slap together a standalone Webtop which could go as far as launching from a CM7 Rom, but it was a WIP and was dropped, mostly a proof-of-concept. Also, I don't have a link ready.
Also, mortorola is rumoured to drop Webtop functionality in ICS/JB, so I'm afraid you're out of luck.
Stick to GB if you want dock functionality, I'm afraid.
