Is it possible to have my phone not charge when I plug it into my PC via USB cable
Sent from my HTC Magic using Tapatalk
I was about to open a new thread regarding this in the same section, yet I noticed this old one idling about with no replies at all, why not restoring it from the dead.
So, like, how to disable automatic phone charging when connected to PC via USB?
I am trying to transition from WM to Android on my HD2, and I am currently checking how smooth it can be, yet this maniacal fixation of android to charge the battery whenever I plug a USB cable just pains me, in WM there's a nice option to "do not charge the battery when I connect the phone to the PC".
I have done my share of searching, both in here and in the mare magnum of google's index, but all the replies I could find in fora around the tubes of the internets were:
1) "Why should you disable that?"
2) "I don't know, try cutting the power line in the USB cable" (??). (btw, that doesn't work as it apparently renders the cable useless for syncing)
3) "Why would you ever want to do that?"
4) "Tethering needs power so it's a good idea not to disable usb charging, just leave it on"
5) "Why ever in the world do you want to ever disable that, like, ever, in everland?"
6) "Use a bluetooth connection for tethering so you won't need the usb cable"
7) "You can't"
8) "blah blah EVER blah EVER EVER blah LEAVE IT ON blah blah did I say EVER already?"
So, why do I want to do that? Because I want to
Did someone find any kind of setting to have android stop charging the battery when I want to plug a USB cable to the PC?
I'm pretty sure it's not something you can change in software since the would phone charge when plugged into a computers USB port. You'd probably need to get your hands dirty and short a connection or two on the phone itself.
Well this is not the reply you are expecting but a solution would be to buy a cable that only syncs and does not charge if you can find one (I have USB cables that only charge or charge & sync but I don't know if USB cables that only sync exist ...).

take a look at post#3 in my last link - the guy is talking about Enclair and I can't swear, but I think I also kind of remember it was there
so - it WAS possible. I am not sure why it is not anymore...

Here is my reason:
I connect the phone to PC and disconnect it 20-30 up to 50x in a day (transfer the data all the time to PC, but have to get out of the office as soon as the phone rings to take the call - or to make one...)
I have heard that the Li-Ion battery don't suffer a "memory effect".
My interpretation of the "mem effect" is that with time, the Li-Ion battery won't provide shorter using time if it is randomly charged (not drained to 5% and then fully charged).
But what about a charging cycles How much can a lifetime stand? 1000, 2000 cycles?
And how do you count a charging cycle:
- connected/disconnected to the charger, or
- charged (in 1, 2, 10 iterations) from 5% to 100%?
In the first case, I really can see a potential of this app...
Or are you saying that I can connect and disconnect the charger for unlimited times?
Math:
30 x 365 = 10950.
Can a Li-Ion battery stand 10000 charging cycles (in a year)?
Plus - take a look at this tread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334542
This is a Kaiser forum (WM), but there are a few more logical reasons aplicable to android phone, also...

Add #9 to your list: What bother when the thing hardly charges at all via USB when being used.

Being randomly plugged in for a couple of minutes does not count as a charge cycle. As noted above, the battery will not even notice.
Ok, for a couple of minutes, but I don't take a calls every few minutes...
It's (verry approx.) every 10-15 minutes. Sometimes 3x in 5 minutes, sometimes no call in an hour, but definitly I can see that my phone is charging, and the percentage is changing (up and down).
Is there a word or two somewhere about this toppic - what a charging cycle means for a Li-Ion battery?
Cheers

Li-Ion batteries actually do better with frequent partial charges/discharges. If you want to maximize your long-term battery life, you'll keep it at 40-60% charge state most of the time. If you know you'll be away from a charger for a long time, then go ahead and bump charge it to 100%, but doing this all the time will shorten the life of the battery. Same with running it down too far. Also, a slower charge rate is better for the battery, so if you don't need a rapid charge, the capped current when charging from USB vs wall charger should be better for your battery. See http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries
Don't get me wrong, there are valid reasons to not want to charge your battery when connected to USB, but an irrational fear of frequent short charges is not one of them. Some valid reasons I can think of:
1. Don't want to drain laptop battery.
2. Phone is already hot and don't want charging to get it hotter.

Bingo, we have a winner!
Another reason, which is my case, is that I want the phone to treat USB power as a secondary battery (use it while it's there, and switch to main battery only when it depletes or is unplugged) when it in fact is a secondary batttery (I was going to post a link to the product in question, but forum rules; see DX sku 18883 or any of the portable chargers available anywhere) Has anyone found a way?
A google search on this issue returns a topic on modmymobile.com (search it yourself; forum rules) with this:
You can turn off USB charging from XLR8's seem map
No Bit manipulation just change the value.

01 charge via computer USB connection
00 do not charge via computer USB connection

Frankly, I have no idea what that means. Is it something I could use on my Blade or is it HW-specific?
Is there a simple way to disable usb charging for Samsung Galaxy Gio and HTC Desire HD? Thanks in advance!
You might give this a try usb-charging-commander - I can not post outside links so you have to search on your own. It's on modaco forum.

Thanks for the tip. Sadly, it doesn't just disable charging, it cuts off USB power completely (the phone runs on battery). Better than nothing I guess.
The USBChargingCommander application was promising, too bad on my Galaxy S2 it does nothing even after a reboot

This should come as a surprise to no one who's looked at the code> https___github.com_t0mm13b/UsbChargeCommander/UsbChargeCommander.java (replace underscores with colon-slash-slash and slash). It simply performs
Code:
write /sys/module/msm_battery/parameters/usb_chg_enable 0/1
as root. msm_battery is a chipset-specific driver, and since GS2 uses a different chipset, this app cannot work on it. If however, you or someone savvy with a GS2 can search the sysfs interface and find a parameter which controls USB charging, getting the app to work on GS2 should be a breeze for tommie (or anyone with ADK, since tommie made the code available ).
Of course, there's no guarantee such a parameter exists, in which case there's not much you can do.
USBChargingCommander don't work on my Desire HD
The path is: /sys/module/htc_battery/parameters/
But in this folder there is only: debug_mask
How can i make it work?
Edit
Found another path: /sys/power/
There are the files state (value "mem") and state_onchg (value "chgon")
Maybe this can help..
Isn't USB charging an option under ##data# ?
Nothing found...
just /data/d/htc_battery/charget_state
Hi there,
I want to push this thread back up.
perhaps someone has now found a solution to the problem.
i like the cable only for transfer and tethering, but not to charge from my laptop.
the battery is draining too fast then.
and i didn´t found an only transfer usb cable, without charging.
thx alot
hi all,
I'm interested too. Any clue on how to do this on HTC wildfire? I've already checked all the folders you guys suggested without success.
Also checked the arco68's kernel source code and found some entry points . I asked to arco and he confirmed that would be possible to implement the feature recompiling the kernel...I've never did it. any kernel dev out there interested?
cheers

Use recovery
Connect USB In a recovery like CWM. There is option to do that in mounts and Storage-Mount USB storage.
HOPE I HELPED!!!
So I tried one of the tricks floating around to sort of calibrate the batter. I charged to 100% like any normal charge, then in Tenfar's I wiped the battery stats. Then, as a guide said, I have let my battery completely die. However, I plugged my phone into my WALL charger, and it immediately started booting but it booted into Tenfar's..... I thought that was weird, but then I clicked on reboot system to have it boot normally, and it just died again partway through. I turned it on again after unplugging and replugging, but it booted into Tenfar's again. Then I left it there for a sec to see if it could gather some charge while in that screen, but it just died again. I don't know why it's not working...?
Ohhh crap. You've done it now. You have to sbf flash, but honestly I don't know if you have enough charge for that.. what you did is disable the feature to charge without fully booting up, and your phone automatically goes into recovery which doesn't actually charge the phone.
I believe your best bet is to buy a new battery, or go into AT&T and use one of their batterys... switch to charge mode in tenfars recovery app, switch back to your dead battery, let it charge. Then your good. make sure your Atrix NEVER dies while in recovery mode (set from the cwm app.)
Sent from my GingerBlur'd, de-odex'd, modded Motorola Atrix 4G (ish.)
Well, while in the CWM recovery, I clicked reboot again, but this time I quickly pulled the charger out and then plugged it back in, and it worked. It must have started taking the charge again because it finished booting up and now my phone is working well and is charged again! Crisis averted.
But really...why did tenfar's even open up right when I plugged my phone in? I hadn't been using it recently or anything..
Draining the battery down to zero does not need to be done on lithium batteries. That is a trick for NiCad batteries to keep them from building a memory.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Beard, tenfars cwm is hacked so that it works on the Atrix. The way it works is replacing that charging thing with the recovery.

Also, Sifon, so basically the threads that gave methods of battery calibration that involved draining to zero were lying to me? those dastards! Thanks for the tip though, I'll be sure to never EVER EVER EVER do that again lol.

Internet sarcasm doesn't work . But seriously, these Lithium Batteries physically do not gain anything from being fully discharged. Keyword physically
Battery Calibration
Sorry to hear you had a scare... right now the cwm situation is a bit sketchy but booting to recovery is a must. Now I'm not gonna start a whole "liion batteries don't need depletion because they have no memory yada yada" convo but the the results don't lie and let me explain why.
From what I've learned from my xda lurking, there is an amount of battery that is reserved so that it isn't completely dead. Now with all our meddling and rebooting this can get out of sync thus reporting wrong battery stats. The only time it has to learn new battery stats is when it has been forced manually ( calibration app found in the nexus forums) or when android reports that it thinks the battery is dead. So instead of 5% being 5% its more like 5% is 20% so from what I've observed and tested is that when bad battery drain is attributed to this you will experience 100% drain to 60% very rapidly and then it slows down. When bad battery drain is attributed to a rogue app it drains rapidly regardless of the amount of charge and doesn't really slow down at all.
Just so were on the same page I agree that the actual battery is fine ( no liion battery memory ) its android that gets a lil screwey. So in theory this doesn't make sense... I know.. but the results speak for themselves.. 4 hours up and 94% left... facebook twitter and gmail all synced once an hour. Before I would have been at 80% and then it would slow down. I hope someone can benefit from this
Alright, thanks for the replies guys. And yeah I agree, at this point CWM is a must...just a little weird that it would come on when my phone boots after dying. Oh well. And Sifon haha sorry, I was kind of afraid that post would come off the wrong way haha but really, I was actually accepting what you were saying lol.
Anyway, back on topic, since I've done all that my phone is now at 77% and it's been on for about 24 hours (maybe less, it seems the count got a little off for some reason). Does that sound pretty good? Wasn't overly using, but also wasn't NOT using it either. I tend to leave Wifi/data, etc. off when I'm not going to be using it for a while.

Well I am sorry too, because I did not realize how Android handled the battery. Since Android can incorrectly detect the battery level, these methods should work on the OS side.

Okay, my battery seems even more screwed up now. It dropped 10% in like an hour after I left my apartment this morning, and I barely used it, Wifi/data weren't on...The real kicker is I just got back to my apartment and noticed it dropped another 10% during a timespan that I literally didn't even look at my phone once, over like another hour or so...wtf?

You may just have a faulty battery. Id call Moto, or go to a ATT store and see if you can get a replacement.
Before you get a new battery I'd like to try something. Drain it down nice and good (say 3% - 5%) then plug into your wall, enter cwm and hit charge mode. This should charge your phone when it is off. Unless you need an alarm
If after that it still gives you grief, then its time to call moto.

Hi there.
I've got a really irritating problem with my vibrant. I can not get my battery level to budge off of 100%. The indicator won't change at all and when the battery is finally exhausted, it just shuts down.
The problem started this week, and I've had my vibrant since November 2011. Since March I've had some odd battery issues here and there. This one really takes the cake though.
Here is a list of things that I've tried
-rebooted (43x+)
-cleared battery stats-both with apps, cwm, and manually
-ODIN'd back to stock twice
-tried different batteries
-turned phone off and charged
-tried different chargers
-tried different roms- I've been on CM9, ICZEN, and some Froyo ROMs
What else could I try, I'm running out of ideas here?
Thank you for any help you can offer.

Hur hur. Funny guys.
Most battery apps just report the data that the system is giving them, so since my system is telling the phone that its at 100%, the battery apps just do the same. Right? Are there any you know of that take their own measurements?
I'm not sure where or who I'd return the phone to. Its pretty old at this point. Warranty repair is probably out of the question.
Would anyone upload a batterystats.bin file for me. Could that jog my system into reporting something different? I want my vibrant to be back to its normal self!

riight, thats a shame. i guess you wouldn't have any friends that do phone repair?
unfortunately i sold my vibrant awhile ago and bought an evo 3d, so sorry i can't do that
i'm really not sure what you could do, perhaps sell it and buy another phone? thats probably what i'd do after trying what you have already
Thanks for the input anyhow, it was a good idea.
Things have been looking grim for this Vibrant so I bought another one off of the 'bay to replace it. Still messing with it to see if I can find a solution to the problem. Everything below is a poorly worded mess but read on if you're bored or are having a similar issue.
When I'd boot up the phone with a (discharged) battery installed, it would immediately say its charged, and stop trying to charge the battery. This was super frustrating because I'd have to charge with the phone off to actually get any charging done. This morning I tried something different...
The phone will sit at 100% and then just suddenly die, so just now I had used up all the battery, it died, then I booted it up again with the charger plugged, just so I could get to the lockscreen. I unplugged it and waited patiently (like a ninja) for it to suddenly drop to zero(and start the shutdown procedure). At the second it did, I connected the charger and the phone shut off anyway. Then it went to the phone off screen with the giant battery icon. However, THIS time, the icon didn't just instantly report that the phone was charged, instead it showed a very low battery like it should. Half an hour later, the battery icon shows slightly more charge. My phone hasn't done this in a long time, and I think its a good sign. I'm going to let it charge like this and see if I can't get it to start cycling the battery properly again.
So no solid info yet. Just trying to see if I can revive my phones battery management. At least the phone still works fine besides the battery issue.

Alright, so that little trick that I tried (plugging in the charger right as it hits 0%) gets you one proper charge. It doesn't fix anything. As I used the phone after this, it had moments of working well, but would spike from 60% to 100% then back to 1% and so on until it actually dies. Weeeeelllllllshiiiittttt, at least my new phone is showing up soon haha.
so my amaze 4g has been having battery problems for a few days (this is the 2nd battery for it, first died after 13 months), and tonight i went to check a text message and i had about 45% battery left,i swipe to unlock the phone and then 1 sec later it just goes black.
i have tried everything, but the LED wont even turn on when plugged into charger/pc. in device manger i see "qhsusb_dload" , but everything Ive goggled about this issue seems to be related to modified phones, not bone stock.
any help?

This happens when your battery is really dead. You might have to leave the charger plugged in for a few hours before the LED comes back on.
However, this is a temporary fix, and it is likely that it will happen again.
I'd recommend you to get a new battery, even if plugging it for a few hours solves your problem. HTC Amazes are notorious for killing batteries. If you look around, you'll see threads talking about horrible battery life, similar random shutdowns, and such that can only be fixed with a new battery.

i tested my battery voltage and it was 3.850, how can it be really dead when its rated at 3.8v? i have had the battery issue before, but it never bricked my phone.
It's not bricked. (It shouldn't be)
Remove the battery, press the power button several times to dissipate any remaining charge in the phone, and then insert a fully charged battery. I'd recommend you using a different phone (if available) to charge the said battery.
After that, it should boot up normally.
And if I recall, voltage is supposed to be consistent, regardless of the charge level (unless it's totally dead, then maybe it's different, I don't know)
It's the current you want to look for.

thanks for the advice, i dont have any other phone to change this battery with. ill go and see if i can set up seomthing to test amperage, otherwise ill let it charge and heopfully it works.
EDIT: you sir are correct about the battery, i tested the amperage and a normal AA cell had 4.8A the phone battery had 0.002A lol.

Yeah that's not normal. You could try charging it, but it's likely that the battery is fried already. You can buy a new battery on Amazon or some similar site. Many people (including me) recommend Anker batteries.
If you have no luck with the battery this HTC unbricking project for the amaze is definetly for you

got a new anker battery from someone local, i saw the battery working on an amaze4g, doesn't work on mine. so the phone is the issue, are u sure the unbricking project is for me? it seems to be pointed to ppl who switched S-on
Well i tired to unbrick it, couldn't even get past the first step. linux detects the qualcomm device as bus 001 device 003 but brickdetect does not pick it up.
dead mobo?
Hi, each time it´s friday I´m happy because it´s firmware time
Loading up sebsch1991´s sMIUI, this time I noticed that the phone charges veeeeery slow!
Before, It pulled over 1A of the charger, (1.4A I think, which is 0.5C and thus makes sense) but now it´s always somwhere between 0.06A and 0.17A... I have a USB power chceker in between.. The phone has been charging for 6 hours now to reach a liitle over 50% .. from 23 when I put it in.
Anybody else on 11.19 having issues?
I am on the 11.19 update, and I haven't noticed any obvious problems with charging, but I have not watched it closely. I will on next recharge, and will add in a USB line monitor, too.

Sorry.. I think I made a bull**** posting. Flashed back to the previous firmware and noticed that nothing changed.
Went back to 11.19 and the problem still existed. Then I removed the cheap Chinese voltage/current/capacity meter and charging was back to normal.
Thats what happens when two things occur at the same time: fw update and the chinese crapthing breaking by itself.
Also, thats what happens when OP not checks with other device to be sure measurement is OK. Unprofessional.
Lesson learned. Freaked out too early. Sorry for making bull**** posting on this forum....
is there a way to delete this unnecessary topic?
no, charging is the same
