I purchased my streak back in December and I love it, even though it came with 1.6, I had to eventually figure out how to upgrade it to 2.1 and 2.2 instead of waiting on AT&T! And now I see 2.2.2 is out and the changes aren't that different, I'm wondering is this the end of the line for such a great device. Will we every get Gingerbread or Honeycomb?
I don't think anyone will know other than Dell
Of course I'm quite confident that we'll have custom built roms sooner or later.
I think we may have to come to terms that, no official Tom will be release. But how good is the device anyway? Totally amazing. I can live with froyo. Its an amazing piece of kit.:-D
I got a DM on twitter from dell stating that there are no plans to bring gingerbread to the streak. I'll post a screen shot later.
If previously leaked road maps from dell internal documents are to be trusted, then their plans are to release a follow up to the streak code named opus one. It would be same size with higher resolution screen and better processor if memory serves me right.

I agree... if gingerbread wasn't out yet for any phones... Froyo would be king.
It would be kinda like getting a new Corvette and finding out "Gee, they just came out with a 450hp motor & GPS and I only have a 400hp motor and no GPS. Whoopee doo... it is all vanity and ego.
However, I don't see that much improvement with gingerbread anyways.
And yes... I'm very happy with my Froyo 2.2 Streak... amazing cell phone. Everywhere I go, someone wants to see it.

Two things i am looking forwarding in gingerbread
1. Better copy and paste fn
2. Gtalk video chat.
If dell plans to go ahead with the opus one then it would be a bad move on their part to upgrade the current steaks to gb. Because some people will overlook the new hardware changes and just upgrade their current devices and make due.

I read on Engadget that the Droid Eris will not be getting the 2.2 Froyo update. Anybody else hear this? It's a shame, considering it seems that 2.2 runs great on my Eris. I'm sure we will see a little spike in these forums with "zomg how do haxxor Eris I wnt Froyo plz halp". What does everybody think of this news from Verizon? Smart move, or mistake?
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
This has been known for some time now. The Eris has been discontinued and therefore Verizon, has no obligation to remain updating our devices. I feel it is a mistake, judging from all of the Eris users, but what're ya gonna do? Haha

This has been known forever, they just finally told us outright.
Though it's a shame that Verizon will not be giving the eris any more updates it's understandable. You can see in our roms that our phones don't benefit greatly from Froyo. There's a light increase in speed and stability but our phones just weren't meant to deal with these things. Putting newer software on an older device isn't always going to lead to speed increases.
Basically, it sucks, but it makes sense.
after rooting i don't need verizon to push froyo. plenty of froyo roms to choose from here.

It makes little difference to me what Verizon does. I'll have my Eris till I'm due for an upgrade or it dies or gets lost. When my 2 years are up, I'll shop all the major service providers for the best deal.

Besides, Xda's dev and tech support is better service than I've ever gotten from a cell phone provider. Donate what you can when you can.

Absolutely. And Also, more choices and if you're not satisfied with one rom, you can try another till you find the best match for you.
Also, bug reports are acknowledged and addressed as soon as possible. While Verizon tends to publicly deny or ignore or shift blame until months later they might release a patch.

I believe it is a mistake since Eris users are still under contract and cannot afford to buy a new phone outright. The service that Verizon has given the Eris has really disgruntled me with them to the point that I am actually considering switching networks over this. I just bought my Eris in March and 6 months into the contract (and 5 Replacements later) the phone is not even supported anymore. So I have a year left before my upgrade date to think about how much Verizon screwed us. I understand they don't sell the phone anymore, but they still have plenty of customers under contract. It is obvious that once they make the initial sale, they no longer care about us until it is time for contract renewal.
That's why I got away from Verizon when my contract ran out. They aren't very customer focused imo. I use a Verizon MVNO, and I have a tiny data budget each month, but it really doesn't matter much as I use WIFI most of the time (home and work). It's much cheaper too, and I still get to use Verizon's network.

My wife has the Droid incredible and she has the 2.2 update applied to it. Let me be the first to say its no different than 2.1. I've played around with it a fair amount and side by side other than being inherently faster due to the 1.0 ghz its no diff than the stock Eris as far as functionality goes. Our froyo roms that are developed are by far better imo than the stock update

You're a bit confused. Verizon has gone beyond what I ever expected when it comes to Eris support. Verizon gave us that most recent July Update with a new radio and bug fix.
What people fail to understand is that froyo on our phone is pretty much wasted on us.
ex: Our phones jump from 250 to 450 (app.) quadrant scores. Our phones get an added 2mflops ~~. That's the jump from 2.1 to 2.2.
That's a tiny jump, not even 2x the quadrant score, and a measly 2mflops.
Look at the incredible, it jumps from mflops of 5.2 to 28. The change is much more significant and clear.
In summation, Verizon spending time and money on updates for our phone would be useless since our phones hardware is so underwhelming.
[soapbox]The news doesn't surprise or upset me. I wish it weren't so, but only because having an official Eris Sense Froyo ROM as a base could only improve Froyo (plus bring Froyo+Sense) ROMs on the Eris. I would guess this is the major reason most people on here don't like that we're not getting the updates.
With the custom ROMs we have already, the Eris is such a great phone, and it wouldn't be much if any return on investment for HTC/Verizon to bother with Froyo on this retired phone. Acting the devil's advocate, what's good for Verizon is good for us (in general, not necessarily always). If they don't spend resources and money on "x", then they don't have to raise our rates or cut other services to help fund some expenditures. It wouldn't happen immediately but it's inevitable that it would eventually. The longer they can put it off, the better for us.
After all, do any of us who run custom ROMs on our Eris think that our phone sucks? If you do, you either are using the wrong ROM or are unrealistic in your expectations.
Sorry for the rant!!![/soapbox]
I think the Eris running KaosFroyo is awesome but that's not going to stop me from jumping over to Sprint for an EVO. The fact that verizon has outright stated that they will be offering tiered Data (with good reason, they're collapsing in the face of the smartphone revolution) in addition to a not insignificant price difference combined with their lack of customer focus adds up to an account loss.
I love the verizon network, but when you can hack a PRL that roams onto it and can do so voice and data for free? Even the network loses a mark. One thing I am doing for sure though when I jump ship is I am going to offer my twice used (I bought it used) eris right here to a developer for cheap before I take it to ebay. As my last act of support for the community.
Hello folks,
I'm a loyal VZW customer, please don't throw tomatoes, and I love my Fascinate even though it has a few warts. My friend is on Tmo and ready to chuck his old BB into the Tennessee River. After much reading it seems to come down to the Vibrant or the mytouch 4G. I know that the mytouch was giving folks some grief in rooting and so forth and the vibrant has been sorted out.
My question is can someone who has T-mo give me opinions on these phones? I know this is the Vib forum and expect answers accordingly but the Vib is basically the slightly older brother to my Fascinate and I know how much it rocks even with Sammy dragging their feet at times.
Thanks.
As much as I love my vibrant I would go with the mytouch.

Only thing on the Nexus S that's better than the Vibrant is the NAND chip and the OS.
Everything else is arguably worse, or the same at best.
Well, maybe the GPS will work right.
In any case, that phone is not "worth the wait."

The NFC chip may be nice. The EXT4 filesystem is too. The FFC and BFC flash are probably important to some. The lack of an SD card is bad. I don't want a Nexus S, myself. The Vibrant is still my favorite.

Mytouch 4G IMO. Physically it just feels nicer, it has hsdpa+ (meh), has a front facing camera, and the GPS works right on it. The built in software is slightly less bad than the Vibrant's, and I'd actually be willing to bet that it will see an official CM build before the Vibrant does (despite being released so much later).
Tell him to suck it up till the dual-core phones come out in early 2011.
I absolutely love the Vibrant. So hard to brick, lots of development, Cyanogen is going to happen, great hardware, great screen.
The MT4G has advantages, but i think it is ugly as Duck (kind of me not to cuss, right).... I would hate to pick up that phone everyday... it is just not attractive, at all to me. the data speed would be nice though, if you are in a "4G" city.

The NAND chip in the Nexus S is much better than the Vibrants. There's a chance that even with RFS we would not be getting the types of lags we get if we had the better NAND chip.
Camera Flash, LED Notification are pretty basic features and Samsung not giving them to us was a faux pas - but they didn't really have any competition on our carrier when the phone was released (only the HD2, that was it), so there wasn't any real incentive for them to put them on there - all things considered.
FFC is nice but not necessary. Maybe in a year or so the market will get to a point where it's an expected feature.
Lack of SD card is bad but with 16GB storage I'd take a better NAND and a LED Notification and Flash over a card slot, personally...
Don't go for the MyTrash 4g. Come on. You should know better than that. Just get a Nexus S next week and you'll be fine. It has 2.3. Nice clean interface, no TouchWiz, SAMOLED screen, Front facing camera. It's a no brainer!
MyTrash 4G is ugly, has a washed out screen, ugliest UI I've ever seen on a phone, speaker sucks, battery life sucks, camera sucks. Garbage. Why would anyone on earth ever consdier that POS. So what if it has HSPA+! So what if it has a FFC and so what if has a so called "second generation" processor. Like it's that much faster. Please. Believe me, it isn't. The Nexus S probably wont have Samsungs stupid file system and since it will have 2.3, speed will be on par with the MyTrash if not just a little behind but only by a nose.

lol yeah. But I'm really disappointed at HTC. They make good ****. Why did they have to be patronizing and give T-Mo a Fisher Price/Tech looking ugly ass phone with a ugly user interface. Why couldn't they just make a phone with the HD7/Evo's body and just use regular Sense. That's all they had to do.

I have a Vibrant and a Nexus One and a MT4G. I am going to sell my Nexus One . I like the Vibrant best as I am using it to learn the how to;s and where for's of rooting and flashing etc. I am a nubie and I do not feel comfortable doing much to the Nexus One or the Mt4g. The Vibrant seems to be very difficult to do total damage to(at least thats what I have read on these threads) but I hope I do not find out just how difficult that is any time soon. IMO the Mt4g is the best all around phone. That is for phone basics and it does everything well ( however apparently no one thing great) and is just a solid performer, but it seems to not be user friendly to users who are not well versed in Adb or have a lot of experience in rooting and flashing and recovering etc. The Vibrant has Odin which I find to be very useful once you finally get it installed. That is just my opinion. I am going to keep the Vibrant for sure and probably the MT4g and am in the process of deciding whether or not to go for the Nexus S. (I probably will)
This phone isn't for me. It really is for a friend that really doesn't have any intention of doing any major "customization".

Just got my Wife a Mytouch 4G and after playing with it I am torn. Vibrant is great, but the random lags drive me nutz. Yes I have played with custom roms and they do seem to help but always come across weird glitches and end up back on stock as at least it is 100% stable for me. MT4G just seems over all snappier, and while screen isn't as vibrant, never had issues with blurry text in web browser. Also forgot how nice it was having HTC phones turn over to silence incoming calls and other little stuff like that. Vibrant is much lighter though, MT4G is heavier than it looks!
If I had to do it over, would probably get the MT4G.
Nexus S is a let down for me. Memory card slot would be nice, but no HSDPA+? WTF?

This is why I appreciate adranalyn/punkkaos so much. Who knows... punkkaos may release a good daily driver 2.3 rom for us!
Fascinate doesnt even have the official 2.2, doubt it will skip to 2.3. International galaxy s may get it, but fascinate will probably be one of the last to get it (as it is with 2.2).
Wasnt there another rumor before that fascinate will get it on the 30th of march? Unless verizon says so themselves, Im not going to believe this any time soon.

Unless Verizon ships it, I'm not even gonna believe them (I was told by some reps when I picked mine up that Froyo was coming in the coming weeks from what they were told... yeeeaaaahhhh....). I don't trust Verizon or Samsung...
Not at this point I care about their official Froyo, thanks to the Mesmerize. Hoepfully we'll get CM7 ported to our phones before our devs totally move on (instead of only continuing to work on this phone out of pity).
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/07/gingerbread-update-for-samsung-galaxy-s-to-start-rolling-out-in/
Official word from Samsung's Finnish site informs us that local owners of its Galaxy S smartphone will be receiving their Gingerbread fix around the middle of this month. Less direct, but still pretty reliable, confirmation of this comes from UK carrier Three, who promises the same OS version will be arriving to its users of the handset "in a couple of weeks." Considering an Android 2.3.2 build for the Galaxy S already leaked out way back in February, few should be surprised at the timing of this release, but prior experience still urges us to be wary when it comes to Samsung and its software update schedules.

Find someone who can reverse engineer and write drivers for the Streak and you can have ICS. That's the only way ICS is happening, unless Olleh produces an ICS ROM for their Streaks.

I don't mean to spam this forum, I just really wonder myself how difficult people porting the driver into streak 5. I'm newbie here, I'm observe everywhere include the rumor that DJ_STEVE has run out of budget to pay the server. my question is why Dell itself do do anything to help satisfying the costumer..I Love Dell but now Dell don't do anything at all to help
Dell will not help, because to Dell its Android line was a failure. Besides, they did no worse in firmware updates than any other device manufacturer. They promised an update to Froyo and delivered. The fact we even got Gingerbread is all due to Olleh KT providing an updated ROM for their Streaks. That was not Dell's doing. The simple fact here is the Streak is two years old, thus ancient technology, and has long since been discontinued by Dell. Thus any expectation of firmware updates from Dell is unrealistic, which leads back to my initial post in this thread regarding drivers.
P.S. Just to make things clear, I know you were not spamming the forum. In reality nobody was, however hcaz301's posts were rather redundant, even resurrecting dead threads to post inaccurate statements. Thus my comment, which was directed at him.

Let me give you a piece of advice: stop wasting both your time and mine and actually do something constructive with your life. You may or may not understand this, but I neither have to justify nor prove myself to you or anyone else for that matter. What you see here is what you get, and quite bluntly, I don't give a f*** if you like it or not.
havent been here for about 2 or 3 years but getting another streak here soon once i sell off my Motorola milestone 3, and before i left there was talk of DJSteve coming back to pot cm9 to the streak and i see a few roms but not fully working so does that mean that all hope is lost and people moved on? or is there still people trying to get a fully working rom, plus with kitkat coming out and can "run" on lower spec roms will that give us a new light of hope?
I haven't seen DJ Steve here since he said he was going to work on ICS. At this point, it won't matter because in a few months I'm getting a Nexus 5. However, there are a couple lessons to be learned from this.
1. Don't promise what you can't deliver.
2. Don't trust anybody.
Now I'm sure at some point he'll come across this post, read it, and start throwing a hissy fit. However, this is the simple truth of the matter: he promised, didn't deliver, and any trust or goodwill he earned is gone. Getting angry at the messenger will not change that perception.

I know it's a small consolation, but you could install Traveller DSC and have a fully featured ROM. It's not ICS, but it at least looks the part.
<random musing>Though I really should switch out the default wallpapers for something more in tune with my tastes.</random musing>
Yeah I will give it a try man oce I get a streak trying to sell or trade my unlocked motorola droid 3

See it like this: In it's time, the Dell Streak 5 was a top class phablet. Much like the Porsche 912 as a sports car in the 60s. Even today, it is fun to drive. Modern cars - even less expensive ones - have abs brakes, rain sensors or other bells and whistles you will never see in your classic model. So what?
Well Dell is definitly no Porsche and mobile devices have a much shorter lifespan than cars. But have you tried to buy a Dell Streak 5 lately? A new one or even second hand? You pay collectors prices.
