Galaxy S2 freezing up - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
My galaxy s2 has frozen up on me about 5 times now as if a process has stopped responding and killed it. I need to press and hold the power button until it restarts to get it going again.
The phone is running stock firmware which I updates yesterday via kies. Hope someone can help!
Thanks

If you have root run locate . If you don't got root access u can use watchdog to se if there are some apps chasing the freezing. http://market.android.com/search?q=pname:com.zomut.watchdog

Thanks ill give watchdog a go (not rooted) .

You could also back up data and try a factory reset .

Faulty GS2 from Three
I have just received my new GS2 from Three UK today. Phone freezes when I try to film video. Have to keep power button pressed for about 10 seconds to turn off and restart. It also freezes when I try using voice commands.
I called Three and they will send another phone. I was lucky I noticed the problem before rooting th e phone. Another annoyance is the fact they bloat the phone with apps you cannot uninstall, so a generic ROM is definitely needed, unless you want to keep their included apps.

I believe this is due to a faulty unit as it happened to me right out of the box, no rooting, no apps installed, no nothing. Continuously freezing on me. I'm returning the handset tomorrow.

You could always freeze the bloatware with titanium backup pro its well worthit
Amd even uninstall them if u really dont want them

Can anyone provide more details on this?
Is it a command run from Terminal, in the phone? What are the parameters?
(or at least what search keywords can I use in Google?)

You may have froze something that wasn't bloatware, check again just to be sure.
Don't freeze more than a couple apps at a time, then use the phone as you normally would & see if everything works. That way if something goes wrong, it's much easier to figure out which is the essential app

the lte switch has nothing to do with phone calls since calls arent made over data. my advice? switch to a rom that is already debloated. save yourself the trouble
Can you list the apps you froze here?

If you are still having connection problems
1. Unfreeze everything
2. Reboot
3. Turn on airplane mode
4. Turn off airplane mode
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Unfreeze half the apps you froze, see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, freeze them again and unfreeze the other half.
Keep freezing half at a time, switching to the other half when you cause the problem again and you will very quickly identify which app is causing your issue when frozen.
If you start with 32 apps that you frozen and you freeze the wrong half every time following this process, you will track down the problem in just 10 steps.
Focus on one issue at at time, ie X either works or it doesn't.
If you have more than one issue just repeat the same procedure. You could try and track more than one issue at a time, but that makes a very simple process more complex.
Here is a list of confirmed bloatware that is safe to freeze/remove, just in case: http://forum.androidcentral.com/thu...afe-remove-once-rooted-how-put-them-back.html
Basically do not remove VZW Backup and Friend Stream

Did you do a backup before freezing any apps? If so, load the backup and start again by freezing a few at a time. Or you could just unfreeze all the apps you froze.
When I first rooted my phone I actually moved the apps off my phone onto my sdcard and renamed them. Now I'm running a custom rom and that is working great.

[Q] "Wi-Fi sharing" and Wi-Fi sharing manager"? Not needed for normal WiFi usage?

[Q] "Wi-Fi sharing" and Wi-Fi sharing manager"? Not needed for normal WiFi usage?
I find these 2 "Wi-Fi sharring" things running usually.
Sometimes they even rank quite highly in battery usage.
But I only use WiFi as a normal client for internet access, never for tethering, so I can stop those "WiFi sharing" processes?
Did Samsung/Android unintentionally mix up the naming of processes?
Has any one else ever seen "Wi-Fi sharing" rank highly in battery usage, even though he/she only uses WiFi for the phone's own internet access?
I have this exact same problem with the Wi-Fi sharing running in the background & draining my battery completely!! Still haven't switched over completely to this phone yet because of this & really hoping I can find a fix for it.
I've seen this mentioned in other threads but most of them talk about rooting the phone to achieve the solution.
Is there any other option for stock users? I can't believe Samsung would expect everyone to do that!!!
It's driving me insane. The battery is completely dead by the mid day! Thankfully I haven't completely switched over from my trusty Desire HD just yet. But am aching to use the SGS2 if there's an easy fix for this.
Anyone have a solution that doesn't involve rooting the phone?
Big thanks in adavance and apologies if this has been discussed already but all the threads I found only involved rooting.
Cheers,
AndroidFreud.

What exactly did you remove & how?
Also does this remove any other functionality that you may need later on?

Wifi sharing comes up once every time I stop charging it. (takes 30 min before it starts) I kill it once and it does not reactivate until I next charge the phone.

you can remove it using titanium backup.
these 2 have no effect on the rest of the regular wifi functionality.its for connecting to the pc through WIFI.
they will appear as long as the WIFI is on
you can use titanium back up to back it up and remove them. in case you will need it you can restore it.so theres no harm. try it.
hope that i helped with it

So there's no way of fixing this on a stock Rom unless I go for root!?!?!
Possible with My Backup Pro?
any news of an official update
I tried checking to see if there were any software updates for the first time and after.signing up all it's saying is connection failed!

Flashing my firmware to KF3 fixed this for me.
Previously I was on KE7, and had this problem.
I flashed KG1 and this is not an issue at all anymore either. If you don't feel like flashing, you can use Titanium and freeze both the sharing and sharing manager with no side effects from what I can tell. I am assuming wi-fi sharing would be convenient if you could share between two mobile devices using wi-fi but not if its a bug as it was in earlier firmware builds.
I used Titanium Backup to freeze those 2 apps. Very glad to hear that the KG1 does not have this issue anymore.

I did the same too.
Apologies, I'm a noob to this. I understood using titanium backup would mean you would have to have root. Is this not correct?
I've only recently got this phone & am on the stock rom. I'd prefer not to root a it would void my warranty.
Is flashing any different? I also have a desire hd & haven't had to deal with any of that. How would I go about it?
Sorry again for all the noob questions. Any help at all would be appreciated.

Well, you might lose the warranty if you are not using a tiny jig . The point is that you can flash custom roms / kernels, etc as much as you want, and if you brick you phone, just insert the jig and everything goes back to normal. But you will have to flash the stock rom / kernel though. But if you want root (more acces to your device) you can do it without changing f/w or anything else. Is good to have root especially for titanium backup imo. With paid version of this app you can even freeze things you don't use everyday or anything else (e.g. wifi sharing).
(sorry for the bad english, but I hope I was helpful)
Thanks for the quick reply.
What's a 'tiny jig'? And do you have any link on how to go about flashing? Will also do a quick search on this. Thanks again.
I'm just finding it incredible that Samsung would expect their users to go this route instead of via an update?! Arent any other users experiencing this?
I tried updating through About Phone> Software updates> but it always says connecting and then connection failed so have not been able to see if that works.
Thanks again for all the help.
UPDATE: Ok did a little searching and came across this which answers most my noob questions. Going to try it out.

You can also search xda to find how to do anything to your phone . This is the "tiny" jig
Ok so that method earlier mentioned apparently will void the warranty so I'm back to square one again.
So has anyone out there been able to fix this on a stock rom? Anyone who got an official update from samsung that actually fixes it?
Everyday I return home to a completely battery drained phone. Not sure how good this is for the battery life. desperately need help here!

Can't instal apps, can't wipe/reset phone

So I got my phone working with rsd light, problem its it reinstalled all my apps, I an unable to update anything. I'm no longer rooted obviously. I can't factory reset the phone from the privacy menu. And even in the android recovery it stays at the triangle. Apps in the market say insufficient memory when I have tons of all memory left. Resetting the phone unger the privacy manu doesn't go anywhere when I hit the button. Also keep getting geolocation problem on my beautiful widgets update.
At the triangle(recovery) press down volume up and down at the same time

Keep using the old version until the new version takes effect, after a factory reset, it takes a while.
I say this from experience, use the old green version for a while, just browse around, and restart the phone. Use the green one, and close it out, soon you will have the new version of the Android Market, if not just find it online.

Troublesome handset.

Hi there.
Neebie coming in...
I just got my hands on the SGS2 2 weeks before x-mas. But the last week it has started to jinx... It randomly reboots, the app "Talk" seems to start randomly every 10 minutes or so. Accuweather is extremely eager to show the forecast. I have tried a reset to factory settings, installed Lookout, but it just wont stop.
I can not delete the apps, as i have not rooted the handset. My employer wont allow rooting because of warranty issues.
Have any experienced similiar odd behaviour, and if so, is there something to do, without rooting, and then deleting these apps permanteley, or should i return the handset?

Not heard anything like that before! Will your boss allow you to update the firmware? You can download a stock firmware and update it.
Make sure your signed out of Talk, accuweather, go into settings and set sync to manual if you can.
Enter recovery, volume up + home button + power button and do a reset from there.
Well, my first guess is to do a factory reset.
If you have Google contacts, all your contacts will be backed up so no harm trying.
btw Lookout won't solve anything like this.
If you return the handset the first thing they will do is a factory reset .
Accuweather reads like settings .
Lookout wont help .
I would check for an update on KIES if you have already factory reset .
Failing that its a service centre as you dont want to go down the no warranty fix routes .
jje
I just mentioned lookout incase someone would point out malware etc.
Ill check the firmware thingy.
Cheers

Constantly Crashing

I have an issue that I cannot pinpoint the cause of figure out a solution to. Maybe someone here can help.
My Sprint G3 is always crashing and rebooting the launcher (phone doesn't turn off, just closes evwrything). I'd be in the middle of any app and it will randomly close every single app. The running apps page always displays after every crash. It's as if too much ram is being used, but it will happen even after a fresh phone restart and launching something simple like WhatsApp.
My phone is rooted via the Stump one click method. I don't have any type of rooted mods enabled, only Adfree. I use Nova launcher (paid & updated).
Is there some sort of event viewer that will log the activity of the phone so I probably someone here can see what might be causing the phone to crash? I'm tempted to Unroot and restore back to stock... But if I can avoid that, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Maybe it's Adfree then. There's a special version that some people are using. It's in it forum somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.
In the meantime, uninstall it and see if it goes away.

Thanks. I've reverted my adfree hosts file and uninstalled it. But I think the issue persists. If I try to use any app that clears cache, specifically Clean Master, when it's doing the scan of apps it'll crash midway through the scan. If I go to system settings > Apps & wait for all the downloaded apps to load the details, it'll crash there too.
This is the oddest thing.
Edit:
This visual may help. It's a video of me running Clean Master & seeing how it just crashes. I can replicate this issue every time like this, but the crashes are random when using other apps.

Ok, so I began uninstalling some apps that I thought may have been the issue... Which they weren't as the crashing still continues. I decided to reboot under safe mode and the problem occurs there too.
I honestly cannot recall if this began before or after rooting with stump. I may have to Unroot & factory restore. =/

I'm at a loss... The 2 things I mentioned can be the culprits, but not for you I guess. Some other ideas?
Did you uninstall Stump after getting root?
Have you froze or uninstalled any system apps/ priv-apps?
It might even be Nova is having issues.
That's all I got.

Tried to unroot but the phone doesn't move past the "Firmware Update. Do not unplug the phone..." screen after holding Volume Up & plugging into the computer. I installed the drivers before hand. But the "CDC Serial" doesn't update. I attempted to manually update the driver by browsing for the folder, but no go.
I may end up having to go to Sprint and exchange the phone for another one.

TL;DR version = Yes, I did fix it. Factory restore did the trick.
A few days after my last post the phone wasn't as bad as the video. It would still crash and reset but mainly after heavy app usage or when trying to clear app cache using any app like Clean Master.
Once my storage reached about 40% used and I couldn't clear the cache, I began to get constant Play Store error messages. No apps would update. I think it was error 483 or something close to hat number.
Since I couldn't flash back to stock because the drivers wouldn't install, I gave up and tried a factory reset. I nearly sh-t myself bc once I confirmed the restore, the phone didn't want to automatically reset per the instructions. I pressed the button multiple times and nothing. I pulled the battery and when I turned it back on, I got the initial screen with the "powered by android" and then black. It did not wanna do anything. Pulled battery again, same outcome. It left it for maybe 10min and still nothing.
I was ready to go back to sprint and see if I could exchange the phone. While researching the closest store, the phone beeped and the initial android setup screen appeared. This was about 25min of waiting on a black screen.
The phone is now back to working order and it's still rooted. There must have been a corrupt file that was erased/restored once the g3 decided to behave.

Congrats!
My G3 is crashing in the similar manner as the video you uploaded.
Except that it only happens when I'm in office connected to office wifi with almost no cellular reception.
On top of that, as far as I could tell... only two apps are causing the launcher to crash... the game Clash of Clans and LINE.
Very very strange....
