[Q] how to pay $10 data, not $25??? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have att, and had an unlocked HTC HD2 for almost a year, and was able to only pay for a $10 unlimited data plan, and it worked great, att didnt know what type of phone i had. then i got my motorola atrix and they automaticaly added a $30 plan. which angers me, because im an extra $20 for the same thing, data. i unlocked my phone, and used a dumb phone for a day, then put the sim card back in my atrix, and they where fine with me paying $10 for a few days, now they just added the $30 plan back on. is there any way that i can keep paying a $10 data plan, preferably not have att know what kind of phone im using? i thought unlocking it would do that, because they wouldnt be able to read the IMEI, but i guess not, any help here? thanks.

i used a backflip for bout 8 months with a dummy phone internet plan ($10). i just told them that i had used a co workers phone for a day then i had mine back i jsu tgave them the dummy phone att btw and they put me back on $10 plan and kept it like that. i had the hd2 liek you too for about 4 months i think then i got the atrix but i got unlimited for data so it doesnt really bother me.
so you can try that.

AT&T uses an IMEI Crawler service that keeps searching for IMEI's in their database. You can go a few days without being hit, but you will get hit again and again.
The only way around using an "AT&T" Atrix is by knowing the "Exact days" the Crawler Service is searching in your area and taking the SIM out and putting it into a dumb phone for that day and then popping it back.
In other words, there's no realistic way of using an "AT&T" Atrix on that plan...

im assming this is still true if the phone is unlocked, and rooted, and all that? if so then, thanks, this pretty much answers my question.

Stock, rooted, ETC... Unfortunately it doesn't matter, since the crawler just looks for the IMEI...

its a little bit late for that...

You can change the IMEI, but you'll have Feds knocking down your door. Bad idea, we will find you!!!! muwoohahahaahah!
(jk, but just pay what everyone else has to)

It could be possible, but it's nothing the user can do. A sales rep might know how to trick the system so it doesn't get the imei.

You won't need a new SIM if you buy it off contract All they give you is the new phone

you can buy off contract (out right), but if your $20 data plan is not for a smart phone. The system will automaticlly put you on the 2g data plan and you will lose your unlimited. Now if your $20 unlimited data is for a smart phone i would make sure that when you purchase the phone, talk to the rep and make sure that they still have you on the unlimited plan...there are way around this...hope this helps...
Currently using it on a Fuse on 3G
So the big issue is $20 per month plus ~$600 for the phone = unlimited data (2 years = $1080)
or
$25 per month plus ~$150 for the phone = 2gig per month (2 years = $750)
Currently using less then 2gig per month but thats with the Fuse....struggling with what to do but I guess we need to see real prices first.
if your on a smartphone unlimited plan, you are locked in for unlimited data on any smart phone... you have tol let the rep know that you have unlimited data when you get the atrix...
I have the vibrant on a at&t unlimited plan that's non smartphone. Will I be detected & upgraded with the atrix 4g?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If you are on a non-smartphone data plan and get an Atrix it is extremely likely that AT&T will detect you and require you to switch data plans.
Just curious, why haven't they detected my vibrant?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Because the Vibrant isn't one of the phones AT&T issues.

This isn't the case. At least, it wasn't when I quit Radioshack a year ago.
All people on AT&T that had the original $20 unlimited data are entitled to it, for as long as they want. You just have to tell them you had it. They can check your plan to see if you previously had it, and if you did, will be able to keep it.
Although, AT&T royally ****ed me when I quit Radioshack(They cancelled my Employee Plan, and I lost all my benefits, they then went ahead and told me they have no record of me ever being a *customer,* so I wasn't entitled to the older plans.)
Again, this was a year ago; They might have changed things since then. I would call and ask.
Realistically, though, 2gb on a phone isn't the easiest thing to cap out.. Especially when the phone has built in Wi-Fi.
I am very interested the atrix and would luv to rid myself of the vibrant. I am going strickly american.

Right, if you had an old data plan you can keep it. But AT&T categorizes some plans as "non-smartphone" plans, and if you get an AT&T smartphone they will notify you that they are switching you to a smartphone plan. I know multiple people that had this happen to them, starting around November.

Correct.
I still have my unlimited data plan from my first Tilt... used it for my Tilt 2.. and I plan on getting the Atrix 4G.
I assume I'm safe as long as I tell/remind/make sure with them, correct?
I'm on a non-smartphone unlimited data on my milestone due to AT&T not recognizing the phone.
My thought process is to get a Bell version Atrix if they are the same hardware as the AT&T and flash AT&T's firmware when it becomes available. That way AT&T can't recognize the IMEI and make me get the higher data plan. I'm currently on $10 unlimited data since i have the unlimited text.
Anything wrong with this thought process? Just curious. Thanks!

Nope, you're incorrect.
If Atrix has a new simcard format, and will force u to get a new simcard, then perhaps.
If standard old sim works with Atrix, you will NOT be upgraded/changed.
This topic was around for a long time, and I'm tired of seeing this. I've been using my simcard for about 5 years now, coming from HTC Kaiser to TouchPro to TouchPro2 to NexusOne to Captivate. Same 1 simcard. Same $20/unlim data.
In fact, I called AT&T (about a different issue) and decided to ask them outright about this policy. They specifically told me that they will not change your account to a more expensive data plan by themselves, unless you ask them to. So I asked (off the record) whether it's ok that I keep the same simcard and using same data plan (i use up around 2-6GB per month data) as I sell/buy my phones off contract. They said they don't care, unless they want me to change it, they won't.
So, 5-6 years with AT&T and 5 (soon to be 6) phones I changed tell me you're wrong.
My advice: sell your N1/captivate/g2/whatever, add $100/$200, get Atrix off contract, plop in the old simcard, never tell AT&T about it, and live happy.

There's a ton of evidence to the contrary, including my own experience. I bought an N1 outright and signed up for AT&T service. At the suggestion of a friend, I went into the corp store with an unlocked feature phone so I could sign up for the $15 unlimited data plan. I did, swapped SIMs, and in less than a day I got a text saying I had been switched to the 2 GB DataPro plan.
AT&T does IMEI scans, and if they are pretty good at telling which phones are smartphones. It's not 100% perfect, but pretty good.
That being said, there should be no reason that you need a new SIM for the Atrix unless you have a REALLY old pre-3G SIM. But, don't count on being able to keep a non-smartphone data plan.

Big difference being that you actually tried to go and get this grandfather $15/mo unlimited plan, which is no longer available. I got this plan many years ago, before iPhone, and just kept renewing my contract on the same terms, which AT&T was happy about. A year ago they already started doing away with unlimited plans, yet they gladly renewed my contract with unlimited data, even though I used the contract extension subsidy to get a new TouchPro2 from them, right from their store.
So maybe the moral here is that if you have the old plan with unlimited data - u can just keep extending it every 2 years without trouble. Cannot do that for new contracts.

Maybe we have our wires crossed here. Data Unlimited for non-smartphones is still very much available and is $15/month. But if you try to use it with a smartphone, 95% of the time they're going to automatically switch you to a DataPro plan for smartphones once they do an IMEI scan. This is exactly what happened with me. I signed up with a dumbphone, and within a day of switching my SIM to my N1 I got a text saying I had been switched.
Now if you are grandfathered into the old unlimited smartphone data plan, the absolutely you should have no trouble keeping it when swapping SIMs.

[Q] At&t Data plan issues.

Hi guys. I have a problem. I do not want a data plan and do not use any data, but At&t keeps on signing me up for a data plan. Is there any way to stop this? I have data disabled on my phone, so it only runs on wifi, but they still sign me up for a data plan and I have to call them every time and yell at them to cancel it. and they sign me up for the really expensive one too, like the 45 $ one. Is there any way to stop them? What can I tell them so they can stop? Please help. I will press the Thank button for anyone who helps.
AT&T requires every smart phone to have a data plan. I use their cheapest one, which is $15 a month for 200MBytes. They definitely shouldn't be signing you up for anything more than that. If they did, I'd call them and complain.
I wonder if they got rid of your data plan, but you were charged $45 because you had no data plan. Each MByte of data transferred to your phone would be extremely expensive. My little sister recently got a phone (not a smartphone) and she wasn't aware that she couldn't use data. There ended up being a $290 bill that month.
I'm sure someone else can comment who is more familiar with how AT&T works.

If you have an AT&T SIM card inside a smartphone, you are required to have a data plan whether you use data or not, regardless of whether you are on contract. That means a minimum $15/mo for the 200 MB plan. The only reason they are letting you cancel the data plan when you call in is because they are assuming you will switch the SIM to a regular phone.
Just to be clear, I believe you meant $15/month for 200Mbytes, not 2GBytes.

If you take out your sim your phone will no longer be a phone. You need it for calls and sms.

Yes, you can put the SIM card into a regular (i.e., non-smart) phone and you won't be forced into a data plan.

The same policy applies to iPhones, so it probably was just a matter of time before you would be "caught" and forced into a data plan.

Pulling the sim won't do you any good unless, like drumist suggested, you're you're going to put it into a non-smart phone. Otherwise you won't have a phone. What you could actually do is just buy a prepaid phone and putting in your sim. Then you could use the aria for wifi, taking pictures, playing games, and listening to music. All things you can do without a sim card.
Sent from my cm7 Aria.
Ok, I am just going to do the prepaid method. Thanks for the response guys.
I am on AT&T with the Aria and I do not have a data plan at all. I'm probably the exception though, as I haven't had any data for about 4 years with previous smart phones either (2 different Blackberry phones).

There is another way around it is buy a Tmobile unlock phone then ATT wont know what kind the phone it is. Even ATT keep the ESN in their data...... so when you make a phone call, the phone send signal to closet tower and every time it does, ATT know because every phone have a unique ID, if the it is match with their database they knew what phone you have. However if you have Tmobile phone they can't verified it.

[Q] Switching to AT&T Atrix 4G

Hello Atrix Owners,
I am thinking about getting an Atrix 4G tomorrow and I am currently using a Samsung Captivate. My question is for anyone who had an unlimited data plan and got the Atrix. Did AT&T make you switch from the unlimited plan when you got the phone?
Also, anyone who had a captivate and went to the atrix... would you say it was worth it?
I've owned a captivate. More that we have an unlocked bootloader, the only thing a captivate has on the atrix is a samoled screen.
I never looked back once I got this device. The hktw firmware feels so fast compared to the cappy's laggy touch wiz. Plus we can actually get a GPS lock.

Make sure to tell them to retain your unlimited plan. My AT&T store here automatically dropped me to the 2GB plan. I checked when I got home online, saw this, then went through a long call before they could get a manager on the phone who could authorize putting me back on unlimited..............AFTER the rep told me it was not possible.

I've had to go along with my family and friends whenever they need to upgrade. I can't tell you how many times I've seen AT&T associates try and drop friends and family to the 2GB without warning them.
When I went to get my Atrix they tried to tell me I couldn't switch my iPhone data over.
Go into the store and just makes sure you tell them you want to stay on the unlimited plan. After they get you all setup check your account right there in the store to make sure. You can keep your unlimited plan but sometimes they will try to switch you.

p.s. you wil be glad you did, I can hardy wait to see what this puppy can do now that it can be unlocked.
So ifu buy a 2g off ebay will it let me choose an unlimited plan and transfer it over to my atrix even though I've already upgraded to my atrix?

I have an ATT LG G2 w/ Straight Talk (I worked for years in the cellular industry so I figured I could avoid their CS issues 95% of the time). Working great, and no issues, but always looking at options. Had the Verizon unlimited plan, and realized I use data so little lately (most is on WiFi and only transit times are really on true data) that it made no sense to pay a ridiculous sum for what I used my phone for.
Have a T-MO SIM at home, they were like 1 buck shipped so I picked up a Micro and Nano just in case for a fast swap, so I may try their 70/7GB plan out and play a little more data heavy (my work re-reimburses 70 so anything up to there is a wash for me).
Ahhhh the joys of number porting, and GSM phones. Play w/ everything until you find the sweet spot.

This part confused me. You don't use much data but are going for a 7gb plan?
At any rate, how is Straight-Talk? I believe they recently started offering ATT network. I have used the tmo prepaid plan and that worked nicely.
Thanks
I don't use it normally, but that's just by habit. I may try being a little bit less data conscious w/ it if I try since my out of pocket isn't different between the two plans. I used to be a lot more data heavy, but with WiFi going everywhere I make it a point to drop onto trusted networks because it's easier on my battery (in addition to the obvious data savings). I was using under 2GB max monthly with my VZN Unlimited plan so it made no sense to pay over 2x what I am now with ST for it and I changed.
It's solid. I went to it only because they switched on ATT LTE and have no problems. Their CS I've heard nightmares about, but I haven't had an issue. Their site freaked out and error'd during my PORT REQUEST and it billed my card 2x, and didn't port. I hit up their online person and they gave me a case and # to call. Called and within 30mins they had my port in process, 1 charge applied to it, and the other crediting back. So that particular instance was fine.
My only gripe is if you're an LTE speed purist as they appear to use a proxy that varies. I did a WHAT IS MY IP a minute ago and it was a service in FL (I'm in AZ) and another time I think it showed somewhere in CA. So they're using a proxy service which is going to cut your speeds depending on the hops back / forth / destination. Overall, though, for 45 bucks a month I have no complaints.
"It's solid. I went to it only because they switched on ATT LTE and have no problems."
This is what interested me, precisely. I am not worried about speed. Honestly, if I get more than 4 or 5 mbit, I am prefectly happy, since I don't do much on the phone that really requires high speeds...like torrenting
with TMO 4g, I was getting up to 12mbit. With att lte and my particular home location, I am lucky to see 12mbit (although in areas near me I have seen 52mbit). But, TMO has a few dead spots in my area that att doesn't. At some point I will probably eat the ETF and go to a prepaid.
Thanks for the info.

NP. I simply activated, threw on CleanROM, tossed in the new APN settings and I was good to go. LTE and MMS worked right away. You do need the new SIM card I'm hearing so it flags LTE ability in the system, but I was a new customer anyhow so that's what they sent (and had free shipping when I ordered it).
That's really all that matters... your personal experience. I dig Prepaid because I bought all my phones anyways (I really hate contracts because I'm technology finicky) so it seemed like a better option to change to a GSM carrier since I was being sent a phone for our game anyways and I just had to choose the phone / carrier. Now I can service bounce if I want, and not pay ridiculous VZN prices. Switching my wife to her own VZN plan (we've had it so long they had a single line 60 dollar plan for unlimited/unlimited/2GB) and giving her my iPhone 5 and then changing to ST we save like 50 a month. Even if I bump my plan we still save (not counting my work paying for 70 anyways). It was a no brainer.
Haven't had an Android phone for an extended period since the OG Droid on Verizon and I'm loving the LG G2 and where Android is now.

Yeah, I kept my previously used tmo sim just for unlocking. It expired and I would have to get a new one. As to buying on contract, doing the math, I can wait a couple months, cancel the contract, pay the etf and should be cheaper than buying it outright for almost $700. I have to be as cheap as possible these days
is this also work in india if phone is bought from usa?

Can confirm working. Plopped in my MetroPCS SIM and it's working like a charm. Cheapest SIM unlock I've ever found, short of doing it yourself (I'm looking at you T-mo GS3)

Would I be able to

I have verizon service If I wanted to use the device just paired to my phone no sim card could I get a T-mobile Version of the gear as it is bit cheaper off contract then the vzw version
Sent From The EDGE

Yes you could, hell I believe the t-mobile data plan is only like $15 off contract but yes, without a Sim it would work fine just over Bluetooth or wifi.
If that's is all you are going to do with it. Att has it for 300 I believe the cheapest of all the carriers. That is what I did...with a option to go sim if I want.
unless you plan on rooting or anything like that, then go T-Mobile, their mobile plan is by far the cheapest (if u use it) and it's not worth the $40 savings to buy an att watch and then a t-mobile sim when u want service.

Lol...true unless you are talking coverage...att blows tmobile out of the water. They can always go h2o...etc which uses att towers for emergencies.

I guess it depends where the op lives , I went from AT&T to T-Mobile and don't have issues, but I do live in an area that has good coverage. price wise, t-mobile is much cheaper than AT&T for me at least and unlimited lte is nice, the wife alone uses like 15gb a month.
Yea but we talking watch here not phones...lte speed on phones is nice to have not that much on watches....besides since now if you buy "out right" you get the "unlock sims code". Wow 15g.....I am lucky to use 500m if that on the phone.
Other options are if they decide to get a plan:
300 att (coverage) = att/tmobile
put on friends att plan 10/month
or
350 tmobile (price)=tmobile/att
put on friends tmobile plan 5/month.

yeah, about that.... every member that I know with an unlocked att watch trying to use another provider has ended up with that mm6 error, I dont know whether they got it resolved or not. The whole family share thing and all that jazz is just confusing. I have been off bluetooth for quite a while at times and I dont think Ive used any data. When I first got my plan and saw it was 500mb for the watch, I kind of panicked but 3 months in and barely used more than 20mb , its all good.

That is so strange....about the mm6 error......have no issues with that what so ever...I pop in my tmobile card that I don't have active select tmobile and can make calls .......of course I get the tmobile cust servc since I am not a cust....but I am registered to the network and all is good. I must be one of the lucky ones.
Same here on the watch data since I am on h2o for emergencies I too was worried, but the gs eats data like a bird your lucky to hit 100m a month.
thanks
