Do you have an AT&T X10? Those have 'Unknown sources' hidden in Settings > Applications.
If you are trying to flash an AT&T X10 1.6 to Sony Ericsson generic world 2.1, you can follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012380
It's very helpful and takes only about 10 to 15 minutes at the most.

thanks that guide really helped and it worked

I have the same problem, but usb debugging and unknown sources is turned on (well was when my o/s still worked )
It gave me then the same problem as it does now
Now it loops with the SE logo (last time at least i had CW installed)
I have tried a SEUS but it gives me the "software is up to date" so i can't do a repair like i did last time
Any ideas???

Do you have the drivers installed? In the flasgtool folder there should be a .exe file with the drivers

1. Did you put the correct X10 Mini drivers into the drivers folder? By default it's running on the X10 drivers, although when you connect the device first time, it will ask for your exact device.
2. Try flashing the stock 2.1 firmware for your X10 Mini (not sure where to find X10 Mini stock firmwares, but they shouldn't be too hard to find). Generally, that can completely restore the software condition back to when it came out of a factory or you just updated it to 2.1

You can only flash a custom kernel when the bootloader is unlocked. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader, look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254087
If your phone also refuses to boot, flash the stock firmware for the Xperia X10 via Flashtool

How do you unlock the boatloader, when one of the steps is to flash with the azuru rom? I try to do the downgrade kernel with flashtool, and I get the above message.

I have flashed and bootloader-unlocked 7 xperias before.Indians as well as AT&T ones without a problem.
Today my friend gave me another one for updating. It was on 1.6.Lucklily it was bought in India itself so i used PC companion to update to 2.3.3.
Was able to root as well as install xrecovery via flashtool.
Than when i tried to unlock bootloader the qsd8250_semc.cmd file ran but gave an error something like cant find userdate partition or something.
than tried to flash doomlords bootmanager...and got the same error!!
didnt find a solution yet

Mine is a Rogers X10a. I had it running a generic 2.3.3 rom, and rooted.
Worked great for about a month, then started experiencing random reboots.
Tried to install the Wolf custom gaming rom, without unlocking the bootloader (because I didn't read first), and that's where my main issues started.

So right now, is the bootloader unlocked or is it still locked? If it's locked, see the link I posted above and follow the instructions.
You flash ROMs through recovery (generally xRecovery or CWM-based recovery for some ROMs), not through the flashtool. The flashtool is only for flashing things like kernel and firmware generally.

Yes bootloader is locked.
Here is the s1tool output:
==============
RUNNING S1_EROM VER "R8A013"
SOFTWARE AID: 0001
LOADER AID: 0001
FLASH ID: "002C/00B3"
LOADER VERSION: "R4A024"
MINOR ERROR [ MISC_CLASS: MISC_ERROR, TA_set_config_failed ]
Elapsed:8 secs.
===============
And I cannot unlock the bootloader from the steps in the link you mention.
The first step is: flash the azuzu kernel downgrade ftf with flashtool
I cannot, because I get the error " ERROR - Error flashing. Aborted"
This is where I am stuck.

Firstly your phones not bricked so relax!! what are u trying to flash..?? i hope not a kernel coz it seems u haven't unlocked the bootloader yet.. and after flashing A new custom ROM.. you should do a factory reset if from switching from eclair or froyo to gingerbread,,in short to higher version.. or else just do wipe dalvik cache and wipe cache partition with recovery..u wont get bootloops.
you could try the Sony Ericsson update service ??

[Q] X10 Boot Problem

I got an Xperia X10i from a friend in school. The only problem it had was that the battery was faulty (We tried a battery from an Xperia Play, worked perfectly top to bottom), so I went a head and bought a new battery. Now the phone will only vibrate and flash a green light. Then nothing, not even the Sony logo. I've to pull the battery out and shove it back it for it to start again. I've tried SEUS, FlashTool, and Repair Phone in PC Companion. They all download the ROM but won't do anything while installing and will eventually say it failed. So my question is, is there anyone else out there who experienced this and how did they fix it? Please help
You might wanna make sure the drivers are properly installed then start flashtool get the .71 baseband and stock gb rom from stickies if i remember well put them in the firmware folder then turn your device off plug it in the pc and quickly hold the back button until a green light shows up and keep holding it start the flashing process and let it do his job flash the rom and the baseband no orders preferred reboot you should have a stock working rom

I really don't know what to do
Strange, I'm in Ireland too. I've an Vodafone Ireland X10i I bought of a guy the other day and it has the very same problem, it just refuses to take the update from 2.1. I downloaded the Nordic 2.1 ftf file and it sticks at 7% and will not move after that. I've contacted Sony Ericsson support yesterday afternoon and I'm awaiting a reply.
I'm not complaining about buying the phone as I use an Xperia X10 anyway so if it can't be repaired I can use it for spare parts and I didn't pay a lot for the one that's broke.
Dmac98 have you contacted Sony Ericsson support? if not then maybe you should as the more people contact them about this problem the quicker they might get it sorted.

SEUS won't work I've already tried that. I just tried again to update via pc companion and it got to the very end then stopped. I'm gona keep trying, it just has to be fixable lol

So we're in the exact same situation and you're doing better than me. I'm jealous. I've a funny feeling you actually have to have more than 50% (It sounds like more of a suggestion) but it's really hard to charge when it keeps on stopping. This things meant to be impossible lol
yeah I use this phone to charge the battery so its always over 50%. The update gets to about 97% then stops, by hook or by crook I'll get it sorted haha

Hmm bootloader unlocked you think? Might be debugging or maybe not because his update probably failed halfway causing this? I know the x10 is not hard brickable whit locked bootloaders no clue about unlocked ones really running short on ideas ...

Yeah, thats what I thought until I seen this post started by Dmac98 the problem is identical. Same country Ireland, same phones X10i, same network I think vodafone. I just think its strange lol. Thanks for your help though, just going to wait and see what se support will say I guess.

[Q] Bootloader unlock issues.. Help needed !!

I have ran SEUS and restored my X10 to Stock 2.3.3
Then I rooted the phone using the newest version of flashtool
Then ran the plugin/bootloader unlock option in flashtool
Then when I reconnect the phone in flash mode, The phone does not enter flash mode and flashtool displays that the phone has been removed and the phone starts up to the Sony Ericsson screen.
Kindly help me and advice on how I can achieve bootloader unlock.
U are doing right thing pal it just the usb connection is a bit poor on our phone. Remove battery for 10-20 seconds, reimsert battery, wait bout a munute, then connect on flash mode. May take couple attempts but the way u doing it is correct

Thank you for the comment. I'll keep trying, finger crossed
I can't seem to get mine past 2.1...... tried to flash after root and all and after I learned the weird recovery process. Flashed one that was safe for locked and unlocked BL but it loops. Even flashed some initD file that the OP of that rom said to flash right after and it is still nil.......

No luck
Must have tried at least a hundred times.. Still no luck with mine.. Anymore suggestions ? Anyone ?
Try just plugging it in and not holding back button. Does that work?

Are u trying to flash a 2.3.3 rom on 2.1? If u have u will have issues. If u did above grab flashtool and flash
global generic 2.3.3 firmware. Then flash the rom.

Ill stick to the phones that are one big ass button flash and fix lime my sgs2 and the HTC inspire I used to have. Thanks again for all the help and in site that you all have provided.

When i flash a kernel, i click to flash, i choose the kernel and wait the screen shows to conect in flash mode, if i try before choose the kernel it fail too, so try it.
Thanks for the reply.
There was no problem when flashing kernel but when I want to unlock the bootloader, it gave me the log below (I'm using latest flashtool 0.7.1.0) :
06/045/2012 07:45:02 - INFO - Flashing loader
06/045/2012 07:45:03 - INFO - Ending flash session
06/045/2012 07:45:03 - WARN - Cancelled
When I switch off the phone, and connect it back with flash mode (pushing the back button).
I tried several method to unlock bootloader but failed. I've even flashed flashed to stock 2.1, flashed the downgrade kernel and tried to unlock via X10 Bootloader Unlock Tool 0.1.1 (old method, i know). I've check my phone and it is good for unlocking (via s1tool).
Can anyone suggest any method I can try?

Which version of flashtool are you using? get the most recent one.
I had a similar problem unlocking th bl for a friend too and it got stuck at that part bcz i was using an older version of flashtool
I'm using flashtool 0.7.1.0, the latest one, i think.
I've flashed, root and install recovery with no error.
Except unlocking the bootloader..
Guys,
I've finally unlocked my bootloader using "The proper method".
The mistake (i think) was, I was on generic 2.3.3 when I use this method.
I flashed back to generic 2.1 and ran the unlock tool. When finished I check back with S1tool, my device show "r" and not "R" Yeaa...
Note that, I failed to unlock my bootloader when I was on 2.1 and 2.3.3 using latest Flashtool.
Thanks guys.

[Q] x10 flashing help!!!!!

I rooted my phone last year when it died. The green light comes on & it vibrated but just wont come on.
After reading about it I tried using pc companion &SEUS both of which no joy. Then I was reading about flashing & as I read you cant brick these phones, I had a go at doing it.
I didnt have a clue which FTF's I needed to download, so I just downloaded some of them & worked my way through trying them all.
I am getting this log & havent got a clue where i am going wrong. I have read post after post & loads of videos.
PLEASE HELP ME, ive been trying now for the last 3 days.
Thank you

I think it's best if you unlock your boot loader, ever since I unlocked my x10's boot loader, I didn't have any problems with flashing firmwares or custom kernels. try it!

Solved [Q] U20 (10W42) root ok, CWM ok, kernel nok, ...

Hi!
I have a Xperia X10 Mini Pro (U20) with Stock Firmware (after recovery with "UpdateService" from SE).
I have installed CWM successfully with "CWMInstaller - Windows - v5".
When I try to install "MiniCM7-2.2.1-mimmi" (or 2.2.2) it says that I need a nAA-Kernel but successfully installs CM7.
When I do a reboot CWM says that "recovery is bad and has to be renewed". After that all I get is the white "Sony Ericsson" lettering (again with the option to start CWM when pressing the back button several times).
So I tried to follow this "Bootloader and kernel guide" and unlock my bootloader first using Flashtool. But when the phone restarts it "hangs" on the white "Sony Ericsson" lettering. When I try again, Flashtool tells me that it is not possible to unlock this bootloader.
My phone is produced 10W42 - could it really be that the ancient stock firmware is the only one which works?
All I want is a more modern and fast (lightweight) android version to use my old phone furthermore.
Thanks in advance for your advice and help!

When you install CWM it is installed in the system part of the ROM. When you installed MiniCM7 it got wiped out, because MiniCM7 is for the nAa-kernel, and in that kernel CWM is built in. Which means it doesn't need to be in the MiniCM7 ROM. That's why you lost it.
And ofcourse it 'hangs' on the white SE lettering, because the ROM you installed does not work with the Sony Ericsson kernel.
You say you unlocked the bootloader, so why don't you flash the nAa-kernel?
Prepare flashtool to flash it, then attach the usb-cable and press home- and back-buttons together to force a restart. If the bootloader unlock was successful the flash will get through and after that, you'll have CWM back and you will continue to boot into the ROM too.
And be very careful not to flash the x10blrelock.ftf by accident, it will definitely break your phone. Best is to remove that from the flashtool/firmwares folder before you proceed.

Thanks for your answer, SmG67.
The problem is, that I have _tried_ to unlock the bootloader, but it did not finish. The "s1tool" still shows a capital R in the version ("RUNNING S1_EROM VER 'R8A029'") which means "not unlocked".
I also tried to install the kernel "U20_2.6.32.61-nAa-06.ftf" but this does not work as the bootloader is locked.
So can you give me a tip, how I could move on?

You should not have proceeded to install the ROM in the first place if you didnt unlock it. Open SONY Update Service in PC, click repair and follow what they say. When you connect your phone to PC for repair, follow what SmG67 told you

I am unsettled now, so I want to make sure to do the right things:
I have "repaired" the phone using UpdateService and made the first setup - phone is now running and USB debugging is switched on.
Then I started flashtool and clicked on the flash-button (U20_2.6.32.61-nAa-06.ftf); followed the instructions but it quits working after phone restart with the following output:
Code:

Root the phone again with flashtool and then unlock the bootloader using flashtool. After that, you should be able to flash the kernel.

Thanks to your reply, I was able to root the device with flashtool. Afterwards I successfully started Superuser and switched off the phone again.
While unlocking the bootloader (button BLU) with flashtool afterwards it gave me the following output:

There are no errors this time, but again nothing more happens: phone is loading and showing orange LED.
I am surprised of the log line saying that "Bootloader status is UNROOTABLE"?
btw: S1info still gives me a uppercase "R" for "not unlocked".
Can I proceed flashing the U20_2.6.32.61-nAa-06.ftf?

That will fail since your bootloader is still locked. Not sure why flashtool failed to unlock it, but maybe you can try the manual method, as linked to in the opening post of the kernel.

You mean to unlock bootloader with "msm7227_semc.cmd" as stated in the "Bootloader and kernel guide" (from above)?
Because this always leads to:
Code:
process requires standard 2.x android firmware.
Drücken Sie eine beliebige Taste . . .
Getting ROOT rights.
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
and the phones LED flashing red sometimes
Thats not the first device I am using custom firmware with, but this phone resists all my attempts.
Finally I managed to run CM7 on my phone following this german instruction.
My mistake was that during the flash process the phone has to be switched on normally and not to be connected in flashmode (pressing back button while plugging USB in).
Thanks for your suggestions and hints!
