Please help- I soft bricked, and have read up on the process to fix, that I need to fix via ODIN. I installed ODIN, Kies, Samsung USB drivers (from an XDA thread link that says they are 'KNOWN' to work), have uninstalled, reinstalled, etc. and the problem I'm having is that my computer will not recognize the phone when it's in download mode no matter what I do.
SO frustrating- any advice?? Much appreciated
Try unplugging the usb and plugging back in

That worked for me. Along with starting with a fresh boot of ODIN after every flash.
Ok so I have a very strange issue with my Vibrant. When I try to turn it on the phone hangs at the Vibrant screen. This happened after I attempted to restore factory settings on my phone while using the AOSP ish JK2 ROM. After this happened I found it impossible to get to Recovery Mode or download mode. I figured I ought to buy a jig online. After receiving it the jig successfully got my phone into download mode. I was planning at this point to ODIN back to the stock OS. Unfortunately the phone is not being recognized by either the computer or ODIN. I tried using a different USB and USB ports but it didn't help. I also borrowed my neighbors laptop (using the same two USB cords) but to no avail. Also I am still not able to get into Recovery Mode after using the jig.
I'm using Windows Vista and I tried both the ODIN v1.0 and v1.3
I'm willing to try anything! Thanks in advance for your help!
Sounds like you need to install the drivers first, so that Odin recognizes your phone.

I just tried updating to ED04 with OTA and now my fascinate just gets stuck in a restart loop (Samsung Logo Comes up then goes away and comes back up again and dosent move on) I am going to try to odin back to DL09 tonight but any ideas.
Sounds like you might just need to reinstall the ROM.
When I messed up my ED04 update last night I was getting a phone-!-computer image on the screen, not a boot loop.
Were your running a voodoo kernel before? I have messed up a kernel and gotten the boot loop before
Flashed back to dl09 and trying to update to ea28 and the last 5 times it has failed
Hi All. My phone is not showing on my computer now. I did OTA update a couple of hours ago and my phone isn't being recognized. It says that the drivers aren't installed even though they are. Not sure what to do now. I can't even get into ODIN because it won't go into download mode. Thanks to anyone who responds. Oh it's rooted, but bloated.

Did you try plugging usb cord into outlet like charging it and then trying to put it in download mode? From what i hear sometimes that is a solution to getting back download mode. There are also download jigs that you can buy on ebay or amazon that can get you into download mode.
pull battery on phone.....plug usb into PC. Open Odin.....then hold down the volume down button and plug in the usb into phone.....continue to hold volume down button until it goes into download mode
Jd and Vinnie,
I havent tried plugging into the wall to attempt download mode. Will this allow the computer to recognize my phone? Ive been reading several different fassys doing this. Ill give it a shot. Each time I plug in comp it says device malfunction not recognized. Thankd for your suggestions
Update. I did the plug in wall and it didnt work..:-(...im stuck. Cant get back to stock because odin ans computer wont recognize my phone.....

edit- it didn't work.
Just for the hell of it can you plug your phone into another computer to see if your phone shows there. Maybe you have to download the samnsung drivers again.
hey fitti,
i tried that already... :-(
hmm geez what havent you tried. I am lost for thoughts then. have you asked this question in IRC? maybe someone in there has idea
I will ask there i am in the rooms now
When I plug it in. It says "one of the usb devices attatched to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it". And I have 3 comps. two laptops and a desktop all the drivers are on there. It seems like my problem came about after I OTA'd to be back on stock and then upgrade to new radio. I'm only instock recovery and I can't get my comps to recognize my phone. I don't know what to do.
yea tell me about it. I'm not too good accessing IRC. With some guidance I'm sure I'll manage. Thanks for checking. I appreciate it.

Have you rebooted this machine? have you uninstalled the drivers and reinstall? did you try other usb ports on this machine?

Firstly, no offence but please do not create topics with idiotic titles like "help" which do not describe teh topic in any way other then its a newbie thread.
Second use search before creating topics because its a good chance that the thread already exists or question has already been answered.

You need to keep kies on your pc and then use Odin

i followed this thread and it said to uninstall kies as it sometimes interferes with odin
odin wasnt seeing my phone when kies was installed and still not seeing it with kies uninstalled either
Yes it interferes with Odin. Just open your task manager and quit all tasks related to kies. Kies doesn't like Odin being able to do all the amazing flashing.
Chris.

This should not happen... if it does... I'm guessing it's because... when you use kies, USB debugging should be off. And when you use Odin... you should enable USB debugging.
(This way has NEVER failed me... or anyone else I know. Otherwise something else must be up)

chris thanks but i even switched off my pc and and nothing in tassk manager is running related to kies
but thanks anyway
Because when you uninstalled kies, you probably removed the usb drivers you need. Try to re-install it and make sure you phone is in debugging mode after... before using odin.
If you don't want to install the drivers with kies, then you need to download and install the samsung drivers yourself.

ouch... that is a bit of a problem then. If you can't boot up your system... because debugging mode is needed.

I don't think that's true. To flash via Odin, you just need drivers installed (with Kies installation, or stand-alone driver installation), and the phone needs to be in download mode. If these conditions are met and the phone is connected to the computer via USB, and Odin still doesn't see the phone, you may need to try another computer.
lol. Are you trying this while the phone is plugged in via usb? Try unplugging it first... then go into download mode... then start odin and then plug in your phone.

i was flashing a firmware and in the middle of it loading onto my phone ,my pc shut down my phone wont boot up . when it starts up it comes up with
two little pc's and it says firmware update encountered an error please use kies to enter recovery
i can get the phone into download mode but kies doesnt see the phone neither does odin .
if i try to enter recovery mode by holding down power ,home and volume up it comes up with the same message about the firmware error .
hope this explains it

Then you know something I don't, because from all tutorials I've seen and videos... Odin won't see phone unless debugging mode is enabled.

Try it on someone else's computer, I kept running in to issues, and changed the USB port I was using, removed SD card, unplugged USB cable after I got the "PASS!" message in Odin.
Additionally ensure you have the right files

Make sure you are in odin mode on the device. I came from HTC One and didn't put my device in Odin mode. Duh.. right? lol.
You can get into Odin mode by doing "adb reboot-bootlaoder"
for the best results:
1.use an official Samsung cable
2. unplug all unneeded usb devices
3.reboot into download mode again
4.connect to a usb 2.0 port on the back of the pc
5.run odin as an admin
if that dose not work, make sure kies is removed, and re-install the Samsung drivers,
reboot pc, and try again.
solved similar problem...
reboot your phone into download mode, but yet not proceed, plug into pc, open odin (as administrator), put the firmware files in their respective places, and finally press vol up to proceed in download mode and press start, it must solve, if all else does not help .. hugs
Hope this helps, if so please press "thanks" ..

Do one thing when you are trying to connect in downloading , just make sure kies is not running at background.
Thing is kies blocks that connection which you are trying to make. It worked for me as well. All the best.

This worked for me after having so many problems. Nobody was clear on how to fix it. I had soft bricked my phone. It wouldn't connect to Kies or allow any pit or rom being flashed to it. Everything would fail. I tried doing what you said and it worked. I always got the errors 'No pit partition' etc.
I plugged in the USB without the battery in.
Phone wouldn't switch on into recovery without battery in so I put it back in.
I then took it out and Odin wouldn't connect to it and start the process without the battery in so I put it back in.
I loaded up the pit file and started it! You should have seen my face! haha! It worked!
It booted up! Hooray!
I switched it off and booted it in recovery mode.
Installed new rom (hopefully this won't break)
Thank goodness for that. I feel your pain guys. If you need any help just message me.
