Hello, I have tried rooting using GladRoot but even though it says "Rooting Success" (something like that) I still cannot get root rights using Titanium Backup. I followed all the instructions and it wouldn't work. So my question is, is there anyway to root my phone without losing all my memory? Also, do i need an external SD card for GladRoot? Thanks in advance.
When I gingerbroke it never wiped and data, internal sd or ext sd. Do you have superuser on your phone? Have you tried anothet root app such as root explorer?

I thought gingerbreak doesnt work for Bell Atrix. Do you have bell? The GladRoot program automatically installed SuperUser for me and no I have never tried them because I just followed the instructions thinking that was the only thing I needed to do.
Gladroot worked for me, make sure you have all the usual stuff installed, adb, drivers, if you go to your adb folder and type
Adb shell
Su
And get a #, you are rooted, also make sure you granted TB super user access.
Gingerbreak should work as well.

Ok, so I was running a stock Atrix 1.57 & rooted via gingerbreak .exe.
It loaded Superuser & then I downloaded Titanium backup, busybox, rom manager & root explorer. In addtion, I ran GladEnable to allow installation of unknown source apps. All apps were running smoothly with permissions granted via superuser. I did a final backup with TB and saved it to my SD card, pulled my SD card (just in case) and updated to 4.1.83. I received verification that the update took place and reinserted the SD card. All apps and screens were in their correct place and everything seemed to be ok. However, when I tried to open TB it said it could not acquire root privileges. Same thing with busybox. I checked Superuser and it is functioning but TB is not listed, nor do I see a way to grant it respective privileges. Root explorer still works and I can also install apps via my SD card.
So all that said, how do I get TB & BB working again?
I apologize if I rambled; I just wanted to provide as much info as I could to answer possible questions.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
You need to rerun gingerbreak. The "root" apps appear to work till they need to do something that requires root (Titanium Backup needs root just to load).
Backup your Internal Phone storage BEFORE running Gingerbreak again.
Thank you.
Well, I thought that would be the simple fix, I just didn't want to risk creating any further issues.
***Update***
Reapplied Gingerbreak and everything is back to normal.
Thanks mostly!
I have been looking for a way to root before I go ahead and install the 4.1.83 update. But the only way I can find is Gingerbreak and from what I have read it formats the SDcard.
Is there a way to root without having to lose everything? Why does the SDcard have to be formatted? The two other times I rooted my device there was no formatting required.
It's an unresolved side-effect, not a planned behavior. So it's a consequence of an exploit.
You don't have to lose everything - you have to backup before you use the exploit.
AFAICT it simply wipes the internal sdcard. So backup the contents, use TB to backup apps and data. Then go for it.
First time I did not backup properly and lost the apps (2) I moved to media and the music I'd copied from my pc. Second time managed to retain everything except, somehow, it broken the homescreen links to two apps - though the apps were still present, I have no idea what happened but it was a 10 second fix.
I unmounted the internal sd card before running it, and it didn't delete anything. Ymmv.

I didn't do anything special before running Gingerbreak and nothing was erased...

Excellent, why didn't I think of that - will try that next time!
Thanks.

err you can still flash the 1.2.6 sbf than do the frozenfish root with the afterupdate, than ota to 1.5.7 and ota to 1.8.3 and use the afterupdate. it does take up way more time and effort than the gingerbreak method
I discover a way to run gringerbreak
download it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Send the apk to your email (yourself)
open it, download and install
I asked this in the main forum Q&A then i found this Eris sub forum. My son has tried to root his Eris for 2 days,He has tried the htc eris 1 click app from the market, the unrevoked method, and the eris root for dummies. It says rooted after everything he has tried but if you try to use a program like titanium backup it says no root access and root checker say it isn't rooted any help??
afaik all 3 of those methods (well, 1-click and dummies for sure) do not modify anything in the normal ROM at all - they only install a custom recovery.
That's why you are seeing the result you do when trying to use root-aware tools in the normal OS - it hasn't been altered even one bit. What is meant by "rooted" in this case is that you have gained privileges to alter the phone (via the custom recovery) - not that the "su" native binary or the "SuperUser.apk" (app) has been installed on your phone.
The "Eris Root for Dummies" thread over on AF is quite explicit about this - you just need to read the first four or five posts carefully. It's got pictures and everything.
By booting the custom recovery, you can:
1) Back up your current ROM (highly recommended before you do anything else).
2) Wipe (data/factory reset) and flash a new ROM, or
3) Perform other customizations
Normally, if you were only going to add the "su" binary and the "SuperUser.apk" app to the existing ROM (I suppose *that* is what you thought was meant by "rooted"), you could do this by flashing the "engtools3.zip" file in the custom recovery.
There is a current thread over in the all things root subsection of AF that has a link to the "engtools3.zip" file. I'll let you find it - I'm feeling a bit lazy right about now.

The 1-click app puts a zip file on your SD card that you can flash from Recovery that gives you the SU app and support files that you need in order to get root level access in the stock ROM. I still suggest installing either xtrSENSE or 666 Sense to get an overclocked kernel (and xtrSENSE adds a lot of extra storage space for third party apps.) Both of these you *should* be able to flash over stock without wiping data, so it will keep your settings and apps that you have already installed, though I would do a Nandroid backup first anyway. (If you read the fourth post in the Dummies thread it will walk you through the steps on Nandroid backup and flashing a zip file - just ignore the wipe step if you flash the rootme.zip file or the two sense custom ROMs.)
I understand it now.Thank you very much.

Hi
I accidentally did a system update on my razr that was given by verizon. Titanium backup is forcefully closed when I open it. But, superuser does not. It is open-able. I would like to re-root my device. Should I unroot it first and then root it again because apps like superuser are still present and open-able? Or is rooting just fine even if there seems to be some kind of problem with the root apps.
In general, is it fine to reroot though the device is already rooted? (I guess this is the general question.)
Yes, it's fine to re-root - in fact, you can't unroot without first rooting again, because the files you need to remove are now protected like all the other system files.
Use the new motofail exploit.

I can't use titanium backup anymore, everytime i run the app i get this:
Code:
Error
Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *NOT* work!
Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes Busybox, and try again
This attempt was made using the "/system/xbin/su" command
I'im running HWMOD's rooted firmware, with superuser "installed and updated", and also busybox "installed and updated". there's nothing wrong, but somehow i can't run titanium backup anymore somehow.
what can be the problem be please, i've googled it and i got no solutions whatsoever!
run the app root checker.
Also from someone who has been there, i dont think titanium works with our unit. Our unit has sd1 and sd2 and sd3. Titanium will backup to sd1, which is internal memory, you can see where this is going. I did a titanium backup, then full wipe, and lost everything because it was not backed up onto sd2...

I don't have to run ROOT CHECKER because i have already other root apps and they function flawlessly (SD maid, quick boot, Busybox installer...) but i run the ROOT CHECKER anyway and it says i do have root privileges.
i forgot to mention that i already used Titanium B to backup apps and data, everything was stored on the external sd card. i could also restore. after all this app is for all android devices.

Hi
Also running HWMOD's rooted firmware and Titanium Backup works perfectly well or me. I also have an
Advent Vega and I was able to transfer my SD card from it to the Media pad and restore apps from my Titanium
Backup on it to the Media pad.

that's what makes the app perfect, BACKUP and RESTORE between different android devices.
have you updated superuser? this seems to have been the cause. Titanium Backup was working fine before I updated superuser and error message is the same as yours. currently i'm using MyBackups.
you can check HWMOD's thread for details as somone also has him about this already.

I solved it, the problem is that titaniumbackup is using the "/system/bin/su" command but the SU binaries are actualy installed in "/system/xbin/"
what i did is going to BUSYBOX and from there switching the install location to "/system/xbin/"
i tried "mybackups" but i prefer TB

thanks hamdimo! will try your solution when I get home later.
btw, HWMOD just released HWMOD kernel 3.0.42 + custom updates and this issue was also addressed.

I fear that my hack could led to believe that searching for the "su" binary only in predefined positions is a good thing ...
I still believe applications should gather the correct informations from the PATH environment variable, as good ol' *NIX does.
But as you said it's kind of addressed, let's hope the hack will have a story
These problems arise only if one updates the "Superuser" application past the 3.0.7 (with "su" binary 3.0.3.2).
That one version is the latest one working as expected.
And yes I am a bit sceptical about my own choice of including 3.1.3 instead of the 3.0.7 in my latest update.
The "su" binary executable alone has grown from a mere 22Kb to 380Kb and "apk" has doubled it's size too (1.5Mb).
Related to these changes in "Superuser" several applications does not work any more for many users and upgrades are needed.
The process of getting "root" privileges for any application has turned tremendously slow. From almost immediate to 2/3 secs. each time.
this solution worked for me
Since superuser is working and granting root permissions to other apps (except TB). Using root explorer, I tried renaming the original su file from /system/bin/su and replacing it (copy-paste) with the su file from /system/xbin
Reloaded TB and it worked =)
Actually i have no problem in my 1st install for titanium backup. but soe how i uninstall accidentally. when i reinstall, it prompt memory not enough but i hve abt 3.5 gb left. my fone is rooted S3. can anybody help. tks in advanced...
