Hard reset without taking out battery - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Occasionally I get a total lockup that requires a cover off, battery out, reset.
This is the price I pay for running on the edge with a custom rom, but is there any way to perform the same reset without having to take the battery out? Ideally drilling a hole in the case and a strategically placed paper clip to reset ... ?

When my phone used to freeze I just held the power button til it shut off. That worked for me.

Hey, I too am running on the edge and I never lockup and I never have to pull the battery as a matter of fact, this is the most stable phone and ROM I have ever been on.
I am running 1.9.0 on top of 351.
I have replace the internal card with a 4GB Class 10 and upgraded the external card to 32GB Class 10.
I have replaced the LCD twice and have to do it again. Each time my own fault.
What I am trying to say is, I think it would be a good Idea for you to reload your phone from scratch.
I put on the 351 recovery and then loaded the 351 ROM. I think I did a factory reset prior or maybe after, anyhow, i the the new ROM pretty much was blank to start with.
I then loaded StreakMod or ClockworkMod recovery and then loaded 1.9.0.
When this was done, I had a screaming machine that is great on the battery and never locks up or coughs or spits on me.
Oh, and I learned that if you keep loading new framework-res.apk files to play with your battery on the status bar or notification bar, you will end up with a Streak that is not happy and will lockup or cough on you.

WTF your having a laugh right!! Why the hell would you want to do that to it!?
Now I respect everyone who likes their custom Roms and those little extra boosts of performance,I have all the files/zips and research pages etc. all ready on standby to go myself if and whenever I decide to have the balls to do it!
But if your having that much trouble with your Rom that it makes you want to think about nailing your precious baby with a drill then change your Rom!!PLEASE!!
I'm really quite happy playing with it rooted and running on a stock Rom! I don't see what the harm is for you in trying something else a bit more stable.
God I hope someone agrees, i'd hate to see you spoil it! Either way, good luck in your decision.

Rock solid rockin' dj_steve 1.9.0 - a win-win situation. This custom rom is more stable than the official donut and eclair I've had on my Streak. Don't get your Streak pierced.

The instability is usually when I'm in the car and have Pandora, Navigation, and Wifi hotspot for the kids in the back with the iPad all running together.
Just looking for a better solution than trying to remove the power cable, take the device out of the Dell car bracket, remove the battery cover, remove the battery, then reverse the procedure, then reboot, whilst driving.
I do have a custom power icon installed, perhaps that's the culprit. Maybe I'll attempt a full rebuild over the weekend before contemplating surgery.
Thanks for the comments.

[Q] getting started with my new vibrant (already rooted + installed clockwork)

are there any apps that I MUST have (aside from launcher pro and a new keyboard)
any roms that I should flash? (I am staying away from froyo because of lack of support for the headphone jack and no jit (afaik that's why froyo is so much faster than eclair) and im in no rush to get flash)
any other tips? (yes I looked at the tips post. so far i have installed that screenshot taking tool, gotten the adblocker and installed titanium backup)
thanks guys!
ps. what's the word on cyanogenmod 6? when is it slated to release?
again thanks for all your help, I'm loving my new vibrant.
-former g1 user.
The word on Cyanogen is it's in the works.
Link:

6.1 is the current work-in-progress and is coming together nicely. There’s a few new features like touch-to-focus in the camcorder, dismiss notifications by swiping, kernel updates for most devices, and improved performance. There will also be support for a few new devices- Acer Liquid, HTC Wildfire and Samsung Vibrant. My eye is also on the new HTC phones that are about to get released like the G2.

one last question: are the lag fixes worth doing? what's the risk? and most roms tell you to uninstall them before flashing, how easy is this to do? and what roms can be "lagfixed?" what is the best way to do a lagfix?
Well, I suggest playing around with your phone. If you notice it's slow, and not as fast, go ahead and install it. Also, download Quadrant Standard. Test it. If your score is 1100-1500, go ahead and install the lagfix.
To install it, this is what I do. I am not quite sure if this is best way, but it works for me.
Remember, I am not responsible for what you do to your phone.
Step 1: Download RyanZA's lagfix from the market. (search "lagfix")
Step 2: Install EXT tools from the app.
Step 3: Apply Lagfix.
If you ever want to uninstall the lagfix, go to the app and do it from there.
ROMs that work with the lagfix as I know:
Vibrant Hybrid
Frankin-Twiz.
I also recommend installing the Captivates camera. It's a 1000x better. You can look that up in the tips thread.
I'm running the Voodoo lag fix on Bionix 1.3. The phone absolutely flies and the battery life is excellent. I'm also pretty sure that you can remove the lag fix by simply placing a named folder inside of the voodoo folder and rebooting, so it should be pretty easy.
I don't always complain, but when I do, I #BlameWes
Oh, also, here's another tip:
If your battery is horrible, let it drain ALL THE WAY, make sure it turns off. Then charge it to 100%. This restarts the cycle, I do this twice a month.
thanks!!!!!
You've got choices...
I'm also running 1.3 Bionix, but with the KingKlick kernel and no lag fix. It might not "fly" like the voodoo lag fix version, but it is quick enough and the battery life is amazing. Been using the phone unplugged for about 8 hours with some calls, texts, and work-related emails and I still have 79% of battery.
Tried all of the 2.1 Roms so far and played with them for a few days each, but have finally settled in with the above.
Whatever you do, give it a few days of regular use before you turn to the next one. And be careful to read the OP's instructions or you'll end up getting all crazy and wanting to throw your phone against a wall cause it bricked...

-alright friend. Keep at it and follow the thread on using Odin to get it back. I've gone back to Odin at least 3-4 times and I know a bunch of folks here have visited it more times than they care to admit.
If you can do it after a good nights sleep, it's probably best cause otherwise you get easily frustrated and really do want to throw it against a wall -- but don't.
You'll recover it - just keep at it. Good luck and hope to hear back that you got it going.

thanks man. i can't even get to the download screen. it ether goes to the battery screen or the vibrant screen depending on which method i use.
my cousin has the same phone, but she bought it through tmobile (not ebay like me) and has a warranty and insurance. should i ask her to get it replace? or will i be able to unbrick?
i should add i can't even get adb going.
would i be able to buy one off contract and return it? wheres a good place to do this?
these phones are almost unbrickable, if you get the vibrant screen you should be able to unbrick it....also the phone is less then a year old so it should have a warranty if it comes down to that.
Keep at it, try these few ideas

--If you got it from eBay, try and see if either the seller is willing to fix or look into Square Trade Warranties. I have a couple of their warranties on phones and ipods and they have always come through for me when the items I get need repair. Also, check into Craigslist locally and see if there is anyone that does phone repair. I have a guy in CA, near where I live that has fixed my electronics before and I found him on Craigslist.
-keep trying man. don't give up.
it's all been sorted out. i have a friend at costco who does returns
thanks for all the help though. I'll make sure read instructions more clearly (although it wasn't entirely my fault, the instructions said don't do a nadroid backup, not don't do a nandroid restore, which is what i did. and guess what? my new vibrant isn't locked! i can get into recovery using the buttons)

Trackball scrolling issue

Is there a file I can edit or remove to disable trackball functionality entirely?
The trackball has the bug where it perpetually scrolls to the left. Just curious what I can do to work around the problem.
Many thanks in advance
Sent from my ADR6200 ERIS using XDA App
Ah yes, I remember this problem. Not a fun experience at all.
The only luck I had was sending in my Eris to Verizon and getting another one. I'm pretty sure you can't do that anymore though, and they'll send you a D1 instead, if they even do that anymore.
Cleaning the trackball might work, since it could be just a piece of dirt causing problems. If you're as unlucky as I was though, its a hardware flaw that can't be (easily) fixed.
Yeah, its a common issue. However that would be an interesting fix lol i know there is another version of the recovery you can use that does not require the trackball, use that to unroot if it dies completely so you can return to Verizon.
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
I have the same problem too, but i cant send to verizon because i am in canada for family and two days from now i will be in saudi arabia...so i cant really send it to verizon. I use my phone daily and it roams perfectly. I have 2.3 SENSE on my phone. Back when I had recieve teh bug, it was going on and on and on. After sometime, and also after some flashing new roms, the bug is not as "powerful" as it was before. Now it only does it when i charge it. I remember there was an app in the market that actually stopped the trackball but it only worked for a min. and then the app stops working. I hope this gives you a bit help!
Search under the Stickys here under Eris and it will point you to the link to download & flash the Recovery Rom - where use of trackball is optional, especially if do you boot into doing NAND backup/recovery or flash ROMs, etc.
Cleaning the trackball by pressing down hard & rubbing on a hard surface over a white printer/copier paper sometimes worked wonder (at least for a while - to me.) Stickys for earlier posts (plus look into YouTube for a demo) ....
I got my Eris via eBay and it's been out of warranty and the ultimate solution was to spend $2.50 (including shipping from USPS) to get a Blackberry (8300, etc.) trackball replacement & did a simple transplant or replacement - available in many colors (I got a black one, least expensive, to replace the transparent/clear one on the phone) - and less than 10 minutes of labor to get it changed, as good as brand new. Just need to use a jeweler's screwdriver (it's a torx/hex style micro screws x 4 plus 2 on the circuit board) to open the case with the cover removed, take out 4 screws & then pry carefully around the edge/rim to avoid scratching to pop it open enough, then taking out the 2 crews to get to the trackball. A slight push or nudge, it will pop out - note the direction of the contacts before putting your new one in - reverse the disassembly sequence. Power up once everything is tighten back together & you are good to go - watching that black/blue/red/orange colored trackball dance & light up.
It was a fun project for me & feeling of accomplishments, giving new life to the aging Eris coupled with one's choice of Froyo or GB Rom's.
Actually, I've had the problem for a while now. I've tested many rom's and it really depends on the rom. Funny isn't. I had come up infrequently in GSB. MacRom it didn't it a little but wasn't crazy. What i do to fix it is press down hard and that seems to fix it. I'm running Gin-Sense Tazz and haven't noticed it yet, but i've just flashed the rom.
I've heard of people fixing it by laying the phone down face first and rolling it around with pressure to reseat it. I'm not saying to, it might make the problem worse. But its a thought

I've replaced the trackball on a phone with this problem, still having occasional issues... The trackball replacement didn't fix it entirely. What to do next?
From what I understand of the trackball problem is that it is a grounding issue with the contacts and the charging/usb port. Mine is doing it also so when it breaks I will take it apart and find out for sure:}
I finally broke the annoying sucker and flashed a recovery that uses the call and end buttons instead of the trackball. I'm not having any issues.

No, the custom recovery is mutually exclusive of the ROM. Sorry, my tweaked version of Amon_RA's custom recovery can't touch the ROM that's installed...
Here's a link to the XDA post where for my tweaked version of the trackball-optional custom recovery for the Eris:

And here is the sister thread over on AndroidForums that has some installation options for you:

Good luck and cheers!
After, I broke the trackball. All the trackball issues left and i needed a way to use the recovery. The recovery without trackball works great.
I also had a bad trackball, now using my wifes old eris since she upgrade to an inc2.

[Q] From HD2 to SGS2 - help me not brick my shiny new Samsung

Hello thar.
I am no stranger when it comes to flashing recovery, MAGLDR, various NAND rom's and generally faffing around - but that's because I have a HD2, and there's lots and lots of development for it.
I've been looking through the SGS2 fora for a while now and I get the idea that (as expected) things are quite new in regards to root, recovery, roms...it's just not as user friendly as the HD2 from what I can see. I'm no tech newbie but I felt things were easier on the other phone. I'm basically here to don my Noob cap once more and figure things out.
However...
I quickly want to confirm what the values are that i'm looking at, and how I apply this knowledge from my SGS2 into the XDA site so I know exactly what to look for.
So here goes:
Baseband version: I9100XXKDJ
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7.I9100DXWKE2-CL187606 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKE2
So I know i'm on KE2. I haven't installed Kies, but i'm assuming i'm due an upgrade? I'm on O2 UK.
Also, what on earth is this [email protected] Do I have root already??
Many thanks for anyone who can clear these simple questions up for me...
Trust me, it's even easier on this phone. If you just want root but want to stay on stock rom head over to the cf-root thread by Chainfire and flash the ke2 kernel in Odin. It'll give you root and CWM.

Ah now you see I already understood that bit, I downloaded Odin last night but didn't have the phone til today.
I just want to understand where i'm coming from, the system values i've written out above almost imply i've got root, plus I want to know whether upgrading to KE4 should be done as standard (is it like simply going from Android 2.3.3 to 2.3.4) or is the "KE" thing very much something I should know what i'm doing before I tinker...
Not sure I exactly understand what you mean, but I'll give it a go
Afaik the "KE" thing is simply the kernel/firmware name. I think KF3 or 4 is the newest one.
You normally update through Kies if you're not rooted, but every firmware version is available from XDA. They are simply flashed by Odin, which is incredibly easy. Some roms can also be flashed by CWM if they support it.
Hope this helps and that I didn't misunderstand you.
Edit: I also highly doubt you got root, but it's easy to find out. Just perform a action that require root access.

Thanks for your words. I'm a couple of steps closer to unleashing Odin on my phone.
I have gone from a HD2/Dell Streak5 combo to HD2/SGS2 combo. I wish women judged us men on the value/epicness of our phones, if they did i'd be pretty much getting it on right now.
One can dream right? By the way I was also very insecure about rooting my SGS2, everything was different from my Legend. But then I dived in and found out it was much much easier, almost foolproof I would say.

Just follow those two rules and you will be perfect
its very easy to do stuff to this phone, I love it, have fun with yours
I'm currently on a rooted KE2.
Reinstalled the original image so I don't get the exclamation mark, but still rooted.
MyBackup Root won't restore my backups. I get the error "cannot write to SD card".
Now i've noticed there's a change of layout here with this phone. I've got sdcard and external_sd folders. Assuming the backup app is trying to write to external_sd which is literally that, the external sd card, why can't it??
I would understand if MAYBE the internal sd was locked down but even then I know it's not.

Switched to GS2 from my hd2. I'm loving the lighter weight and superior screen =)....Switching ROMs is also a breeze. Hope you're enjoying your experience!
Well i've finally mastered everything I needed to. I have root but also a stock ROM, I have all my apps and homescreen the way I want and yes the lighter phone and amazing screen all make up for the next problem...
I have a pair of £120 Monster headphones and they DON'T FIT!
There's less than a millimetre of a gap but a gap nonetheless. My headphones aren't in fully and the only way to remedy the issue is either to hold them in with a finger or turn the headphone plug so it's pointing to the back of the phone - this then becomes an issue with pockets etc.
Without being able to listen to music on this phone i'm left carrying my HD2 around as if it were an iPod. Not good. Also the SGS2 doesn't recognise the vol-up and vol-down as a method to choose prev & next music tracks in PowerAmp. I'm sure the Dev is on the case though as it is a fairly new phone.
Without music i'm seriously considering selling the handset.
Have you tried pushing the plug down with some amount of force? Mine didn't go all the way down at first either, had to push it. If not you should replace it, they should fit.

It's how the plug is seated. If I turn the plug so it's in line with the body of the phone i.e. pointing left or right it refuses to rest fully within the hole. There's an obvious 'spring' effect once I let go of the plug.
If I turn the plug so it's pointing away from me to the back of the phone it sits in there quite nicely. I can only put this down to either the curvature of the plug itself or the tiny little ridge at the join between the gold connector and the L shaped plug itself.
On a side note I did just ram it in there with my palm and it sat quite nicely, then I shook it around a bit (I go to the gym a lot, I was pretending to be kickboxing...) and it stayed in place. Now i'll just wait for the PowerAmp Dev to implement volume button track skipping.

[Q] Atrix dead wifi and bluetooth radios

So, I've been jumping back and forth between Atrix CM9 and CM7 roms and running the .36p radio. Yesterday on CM9, i started getting a large amounts of random reboots and finally got things settled by doing a factory reset in CWM and flashing a clean cm9 rom. However, whenever I turned on wifi, the phone would crash and reboot to the Dual Core logo. I tried flashing another CM9 rom and it didn't crash, but the wifi radio would never seem to pick up any AP's (i'm at home).
I've gone as far as changing to the .37p radio and going back to cm7 to no avail... I'm a bit worried I might have "fried" the wifi radio on the phone.
Did you do a full wipe? Use fastboot to wipe properly before flashing any ROM. Plenty of threads with instructions.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Looking at the fast boot command, I'm not sure how that does anything different then the clockwork mod wipe... but I will give it a shot.
Sent from my NookColor using xda premium
Sorry, but your wifi/bluetooth card is dead. My Atrix got the exact same symptoms a few days ago. Both WiFi and bluetooth are on the same chip. When the system tries to reference them, it fails to locate the hardware and crashes/reboots.
In fact, in researching this topic, I found dozens of threads about this. We should make a sticky about it at this point. Best Buy was kind enough to take back my phone (unlocked bootloader, rooted, cwm, custom fonts, startup, etc.) if I restored it all to stock. If you want Motorola/AT&T/the store you purchased it at to not void your warranty, you should flash the 2.3.6 SBF. Just be cautious and read all about it. But that is the only way that Motorola will service a modded phone

Nothing like the same. Clockwork wipe only does data and cache. You erase boot, system, preinstall, cache, user, webtop, etc., via fastboot. I've posted the procedure probably more than 20 times before.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Yeah unfortunately even after a fastboot wipe, the phone's bluetooth and wifi were gone. I was also over the year warranty. Luckily, I picked up a barely used one on Craigslist and restored my backup to it. Now i've got an expensive battery charger (and spare phone should i need it).
If there were any tips you'd have on restoring to a new phone? I've restored my phone a lot and worked on a lot of android phones (I work at a repair shop), but I've never restored data/settings from one phone to another. Of course its the same model, but I can only imagine the issues that could arise out of such an operation
Thanks!
I just made sure I did a fastboot full wipe of the new phone, then placed my clockworkmod directory on the internal (external should be ok too) storage and did a restore. After the restore, I re-flashed the latest version of the rom I was running on top of it with Google apps and it booted fine. Afterwards, I made sure to do a permissions repair and reboot.
Yeah, it seems like a lot of people are having this problem. Like me for example :[
So far there is no solution that I'm aware of, after trying practically everything I could think of and find on the internet... I'm pretty sure it's hardware related. I bet the phone just isn't very high quality. How much did it cost again? $600? + all of the dumb accessories for it. Normally when you see a pattern of failures you would call it a design flaw, but apparently when it comes to expensive electronics they call it out of warranty.

For anyone interested, here is a supposed solution to the problem:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYz_RiuFVRk
It will require you to open the phone up, and solder the "wifi battery" into place. I'm not sure what the hell that thing is, but that guy in the video called it a battery. Voids warranty etc. Good luck.

[Q] Amaze got wet. Need help.

My girlfriend liked my HTC Amaze and bugged me until I bought her one. It was a used Amaze I found on Craigslist. It has worked fine for almost a year. She's been having some really weird problems with it and I was planning to dig into fixing it for her. HOWEVER, night before last she dropped the dang phone in a cup of soda. She did get it out almost immediately and took it apart and dried everything off. I'm not too sure she let the phone dry very long, I wasn't there.
Now the phone boots just fine and all the apps appear to work. However, it gets NO BARS. It doesn't matter where we are. I can have 5 bars and 4G connection and her phone shows nadda. So we took the phone in to T-Mobile for some help. The guy was a lot of help and spend a lot of time working with the phone. He even switched sim cards. But eventually he discovered that the phone has been rooted. DANG!!!! So that got dropped quick. Now I have to figure this out for myself.
I really need some suggestions. Obviously the antenna has been affected, right? I have done my research and have learned that the phone actually connects to the back cover to obtain a connection. So I will be double checking that as soon as I get my hands on the phone again. What else should I do?
The android version is now v2.?. We've been trying to update it to v4 and it never would download. Now we know why. I want to restore the phone back to the stock configuration and upgrade the OS but there's no use in that unless I can take care of the connection problem.
Please, please, please someone help me. Otherwise I'll have to go out and buy a new Galaxy III for her. I can't afford that right now.

I can have 5 bars and 4G connection and her phone shows nadda. lol your title sounds a lil hahaha anyway all the signal antenna's are in the back door so try a new backdoor?? mite work ther're plenty in ebay
You can try a new back cover, but tbh, my guess is that it's probably not the problem. When it got wet it probably shorted something out or something. You have to take the battery out immediately, every .01 seconds count. And i wouldnt put the battery back in for like 2 days. Whenever mine gets wet I take out the battery then I try and suck out all of the water or whatever liquid out of the device as I can. Then ill let it sit in the sun for a while. I always waut at least 24 hourse before putting it back I

Yeah, that's certainly what I would have done. Unfortunately I wasn't there when it happened. She claims she immediately got it out. But she was falling asleep when it fell in so I really don't know. She did immediately take it apart and dry it off. But I don't think she was so anxious about it she put it back together to see if it would work. That probably did more damage than getting it wet in the first place.
We both have the same phone. I took the back off my Amaze and still have a good signal. It may have dropped one bar but not completely. It may get a boost on the signal from the back cover but it still works without. So I agree it probably is not going to be fixed by simply replacing the back cover. I'm going to stick my back cover on it this evening just to see what happens, but I think I know.
I am going to research the possibility of replacing the antenna completely. It seems the next logical option. I may also go ahead and take it further apart just to give it the opportunity to dry out. We'll see.
Any further comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You are absolutely right!! LOL.. If it weren't for the cost of replacing the danged thing I would still be laughing. Why is it she wants ME to replace it and hasn't even suggested that SHE should be the one to replace it THIS TIME?????? She is on one of those pay as you go accounts. We were ready to set her up with a 2-year deal just to find they don't exist at T-Mobile any more. You pay full price for any phone now regardless of what sort of account you set up. I don't see doing that for quite a while.
I may be searching eBay for a replacement phone. But I'd like to try a few options with this one first.
Clean the contacts

if she dropped it in soda, get some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. clean the contacts very thoroughly. the soda is sticky and can prevent proper contact,
also clean the SIM card contacts on both the card and the phone.
Working Now
I cleaned the back of the phone and the cover this morning with rubbing alcohol then stuck my SIM and SD cards in the phone this morning and turned it on. To my amazement it is now working. What a great sigh of relief!!!!! I have heard nothing but moaning and groaning over this cheap phone I bought my girl until I could resolve this.
So it's off to phase 2 of this adventure. According to the T-Mobile store this phone has been rooted. I've read about it but I know close to nothing about rooting phones. There seems to be as many DIY pages describing how to root or restore a cell phone I am a bit reluctant to get started.
What do I need to look for in restoring this phone? Do I have to find the restore file that matches the Android version on the phone or can I just get the absolute latest one? Which one of these abundance of instructional should I be looking for? What is this about S-On/S-Off? It seems to be important. How do I actually check to verify that this phone has been rooted? I'm just going by someone's comments here.
I'd like to get this completed today. I'm expecting SIGNIFICANT appreciation this evening if I can hand her a working smart phone!!!!
My most enthusiastic and humble appreciation to those who responded. :good:
Been doing some investigations. The phone has super user installed in the aps. It also has 4ext installed. I let the phone download the latest ICS but the install failed.
According to "most" off the forums I have read all I have to do is place the stock image on the root of the external SD card and reboot. Is there anything else I need to worry about?
