[Q] camera question ~ anti-shake? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In the settings menu of the camera, there is an option to toggle the anti-shake feature. When toggled on the screen and resulting image appears darker. It also seems that the feature does not alleviate the "shakes". Does anyone know whats going on?

Mine does the same. Think it is to do with the iso stabilisation technique used and is normal. It speeds the image capture up over the norm to stop blur. So in low light the sensor can't get enough light and becomes darker.

Sounds reasonable you haven't happened to hear the phone/camera make a noise? Almost like a click after previewing an image. It's definitely not coming from the speaker.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

Yes I have heard the click from the camera. I think it is something to do with the auto focus but not certain. I don't like hearing the sound because it makes me wonder if something is going to break but I'm guessing it is normal because I have read of others hearing it. It doesn't do it often and I can't remember when mine is more likely to make it.

I occasionally get that buzzing sound also. It only happens when I initially open the camera app until i touch the screen to focus. Then the buzzing stops. If I reopen the camera app it buzzes again.
OP, what did you do with this issue?
From my exeperience, the camera buzzes when it's not in focus....
Somehow I remember how to make it buzz on purpose but I THINK.... using the Quick Menu and Flash light... turn the screen off or wait till it says the Flash light is OFF in the menu but it's still on... then open the camera and it'll shut off but camera will be buzzing... I think that's how I did it. Don't try it just saying...
But it seems like your not the only one. There's another thread and few people had already gone through the same thing. They most likely said it was due to the camera not in focus.
i posted this in another thread but will post here as well;
"I am not 100% sure, but I do know that the lens moves around in the "barrel" or "eye" if you will. This is how it maintains focus. The mechanical part that forces the lens to move I believe is stuck... sometimes if you tap the camera the buzz will stop.
And I am no developer so take this with a grain of salt, but i remember that some flashlight mods or apps actually activate the camera and though it's not recording the camera will still attempt to maintain focus (due to being "on"). This would explain the buzzing when using the LED light outside of the camera app.
I don’t claim to know anything really... someone with more expertise feel free to lynch me "

This is correct, there's basically a tiny little motor in there and the buzzing you're hearing could either be the motor or the gears. This is normal as far as I know, and everyone can hear it if you make the room realllyyy quiet and then focus.
I have the smane problem.
It is a video from someone on youtube that have the problem too:

Camera Button?

So what does pushing the shutter half way do? The camera already auto focuses, when I push it half way it doesn't do anything. When I push it all the way in it takes the picture.

I think it does nothing at all.
It should focus, but it's broken in the current version of nonsense4.0.
I've been messing with it a little and I think I figured something out. When the camera autofocus if you hold down the shutter half way it will lock the focus. Then you can move the camera to fine tune it. Pretty neat I guess.

Just tested it and I think you're right. I kinda like it now that I know what it does. When using third party camera apps pushing it halfway focuses it but doesn't hold from what I've found.

It does, indeed, lock the focus. For some reason there's just no visual or audio confirmation of that.

At least there is a way to focus it without touching the screen and having to hear that awful screeching sound each time

I've also noticed that, if you have flash set to Auto mode, holding the shutter button halfway for a second or two before taking the photo will prevent the flash from firing regardless of the lighting conditions. I don't know if this is a bug, or was intended, but it does provide a means to override the flash, if necessary.
it focuses the camera on whatever is dead center. or in the boxes that pop up over face focus points. if you touch the screen to "look"at an area other then dead center, the half-push will refocus on that spot. or, as I said before, just focus (refocus) on dead center. like of you ate looking at someone and say "step back" or something. its not programmed too smart
Not only does it lock focus, it also locks exposure. It's not really a manual focus button, it's an AEL/AFL button.
I would prefer a manual focus and AEL/AFL action like my pocket camera. Maybe in the future...
Hmm, Search button or AEL/AFL for the camera half press. Tough choice. Too bad it can't be both. Search when not in camera app, and AEL/AFL when it is.
im a point and shoot type of guy, so i would love to see a dev tweak the half press to focus
Stupid camera button
I absolutely adore this phone, but the camera button is awkward for me! I never really use it unless im talking on the phone and and then im just pressing it cause i know it wont do anything. at least i hope its not

[Q] Is there a reason the camera does this?

when i go into the camera the screen gets brighter while in the app as soon as i go out within seconds it lowers its self..this is without auto brightness
Possibly to make the images on screen more illuminated so you see more detail in what you intend to take a picture of? I'm just guessing here but that would seem reasonable.

^This. It makes sense that you would want your screen bright enough to be able to see everything (that is allowed by lighting) in the image.
yes. entering the camera defaults to 100% brightness, and it lowers back down once you back out.

Camera tweak?

I'm sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, I swear I looked. Does anyone know of a way to alter the settings on the camera flash? It takes WAY longer to take pictures than any phone I've used. By the time the phone is done blinding people with the multiple bursts of light, my subject has moved and the picture is ruined. Thanks in advance!

I'm seeing this problem as well. Also when taking a picture with flash the picture comes out very blue. Never noticed that much blue with other android phones. I'd hate to have to touch up every photo that I have to use flash.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
Yea the color temp of the flash (which is just an LED, not a true photo flash) causes that blue tint.
My Galaxy S3s have the exact same problem. Swapping around the white balance setting can help correct this.

If you use an app like Camera FV-5 it is MUCH easier to change settings like this than it is in the stock camera app.

Funky Front Facing Camera

Just got my s5 from T-mobile last night and shes beautiful
Just wondering does anyone feel the front facing camera gives you a funky look? Its making my head look super longitudinal as if someone has squeezed the camera! Especially when I position my head so show at the bottom of the screen. Please let me know have a great day !
It isn't very good, that would be my best guess

Your head may be defective, I'd take it back to a T-Mobile store and see if they can help you with that.
Perhaps if you posted a sample image (not necessarily of your face) to see if something it obviously wrong. The front facing camera does have a wide angle lens which might be what it causing you to perceive it as "squished." If you rotate the camera do you observe the same effect?
I knew one person would say that lol thanks for clearing the air Haha.. Anyways I'd be more than happy to share..
Also would like to add that I went to T-Mobile and all their phones including my friends front camera are doing the same problem it may be a glitch in the software. It's just how you angle it it had to be at the top of the screen or bottom.
Here is a picture of my face in the center and on the edge, I'll let you be the judge and try it on your phone as well. I am holding my phone horizontal for this one and it made my face wider if I hold it longitude my face will be longer.
Notice how the center picture looks perfect versus when you position yourself at the bottom or the top of the screen.

Hmm strange the s5 at T-Mobile they had for display did that but I will wait maybe it's a software thing that might be fixed within the next update.

haha thank god! i swear to you i went to at&t and t-mobile and used my friends s5 and all their camera's are like this.. it also does it in snapchat if you use that... pretty much anything with front facing camera..phone is fairly new and im sure people will start noticing it sooner or later! Shall we email samsung or something ? lol
I think I have an idea about what you're experiencing, I always thought I looked funnier than I normally do when talking a photo with the front facing camera lol. I found that I look normal before taking the picture but then after taking the photo and when reviewing it something always looked off. I then found out about the "Save as flipped' option when you press the settings button while in the front facing camera mode. I turned that on and it was better, granted all its doing is flipping the image but it just looked so funny when that setting is off for some reason.
Try it out and see if its the same for you.
It's not that. When you have the phone in front of your face taking a "selfie", try moving the phone up and down as far as you can while still seeing the screen and have the camera on your face. You'll notice your face and head starts to distort.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
My guesses:
a) The lens itself is distorted intentionally to fill the extra "widescreen" areas of your display with an otherwise 4:3 ratio sensor.
b) The digital picture is distorted intentionally to fill that same extra void when viewing a 4:3 ratio picture on a 16:9 display.
Think of the days when HD (720p) was brand-new. Some of the first broadcasts that were in "HD" were simply 4:3 ratio videos stretched on the sides to fill up that extra space on your TV (versus having the "black bars" fill it instead).
It could be that the front facing camera just isn't very good, poorly made. I mean it's 2.1 mp. People still use their back camera for selfie lol

I don't have the phone yet but reading for education. This may be silly to ask, but does the distance you put the camera from you change the distortion? I know our arms are only so long, but just a thought.... Since it was pointed out that it does have the extra wide angle lens

Hey more knowledge to you my friend! I did a test with distance and I got the same distortion no matter how far i stood from the front facing camera, if I got near the top of the bottom of the screen, I would become bulging, and a little longitudinal.

You bring up a great point with the "widescreen" but it is 2014 don't you think they would have thought of a way to get a wider ratio with out distorting an image? This makes the front facing camera unusable to some. The HTC one also has a front widescreen screen camera but does not distort.

Hey good idea and it made a difference, I lowered resolution to 1.6 mp1440x 1080 and the effect was still there. 4:3
I put the resolution on 1mp 1072x1072 and the effect is completely gone. Ratio is 1:1
Then I put the resolution on what seems to be the lowest 640x480 .3 mp ratio 4:3 and the effect seems to SLIGHTLY be there by hardly noticeable.
For now I will be leaving it on. 3 mp it seems to be usable and not noticeable. But when I opened any third party applications that utilizes my camera like Snapchat it is distorted
