I mean the bar with bluetooth, gps etc. options on the top of the notification area when you pull it down. In CM7 it is possible to do.

Not without some kind of mod no, the options are fixed as standard on the phone.

I use this now on my streak. I have no widget just the icon bar sitting in my notification area. It displays what is active and what is not. Only compliant is when I click it it opens up widget and fades the background which is an extra step.. also don't like the transparent notification icon.

Okay, that doesn't sound like the same thing. I have the notification bar power control widgets on my Evo and I can toggle them directly from the notification bar.
Well, I just did a Nandroid of my Streak, maybe I'll install it and see what happens.
Question for anyone using Extended Controls on the Atrix. I want to be able to place Extended Controls in my notification bar, but to also be able to eliminate having the widget on my Home screen. I find that if I remove the widget, it also no longer shows up when I bring the notification area down and tap on the EC. Anyone know how to do this, or is it necessary to have the widget on the Home screen, in which case, it seems like a waste of time to put it in the Notification Bar.
Thanks.
I'm not sure about EC, but if you use Widgetsoid you can add them to the notification bar and then set the widget that's on the homescreen to invisible, so that it's ONLY in the notification bar...I believe. There's a free widgetsoid, so you could always try that out!

I'll try it out. Thanks for the suggestion!
Another work around for not having buttons on the notification bar is if you use
swipePad + mySettings
just swipe on the corners to mySettings and change your settings through there. IMO best way.

Sounds like a novel approach. I'll try that too. Thanks!
Widgetsoid blows because..
if you click on a toggle it is not truly a toggle(in notification area) because it launches another toggle window and you cannot toggle directly from notification area

That's true. I guess it depends on the phone. I'm trying the Swipe Pad + My Settings suggestion and finding that I'm liking those apps a lot. The Swipe Pad seems to add a lot of additional functionality. Thanks.

That's true. If EC does it better while still hiding the home screen widget, then by all means use that! Just offering other ideas in case it doesn't.
May not be what you're looking for/more work than you want to do, but CM7 pre beta2 has notification bar controls built in with a bevy of other new features that make day to day use more convenient. I've been using it as my daily driver since pre beta 1 was posted and love it. Minus the few addressed issues that are being worked on now it's the best rom available IMHO.
Lately I've been trying to clear out my statusbar and there's an icon that looks like a location something-or-other.
It's just a plain target, no lines around it or anything.
What is it? Can I get rid of the notification?
Also, what would be the best third-party status bar replacement?
It's hard to say with any certainty without a picture of the icon but it sounds like the GPS locked-on icon. If it's stuck a reboot usually clears it.
I don't know of any status bar replacements.

Just turn your GPS off in your Settings.
I've turned off all of the location services in settings, but my notification bar still has an icon that looks like the GPS is still on. It's a circle with a cross in it and arrows at the cardinal directions. I've even turned GPS off using the power control widget, but it's still there. Anyone know what this and how to get rid of it?

That is the GPS icon and unless you are unlocked you cannot get rid of it (that I know of).
Anyone know what is this screen shape icon mean?
The one with yellow cycle, on the left side of Bluetooth icon.
It means the phone is locked to portrait mode.
Thanks. It used to default "No Show" when I toggle the setting.
Anyway to make the phone not showing that icon. It is kind of wasting space. Just like alarm icon.
I miss the old time when we are able to disable each icon from control.

I actually want that icon to appear on my status bar, if it really is the rotation lock icon. How did you make that show up?
I don't know which CSC make it show up. In my case, I refresh to force it set to BTU solve this. It is come showing now.
