I search and don't see anyone else complaining...
But my P500h is new and the battery is tight and I'm continuing to have "adventure" I don't want to have when removing it.
Originally I tried a thin blade screwdriver in the holes to left and right of battery to pry the battery up. But plastic was getting chewed and at one point I had a SPARK ! LOL.
So I wrapped electrical tape around battery to help pull it out but it threatens to break the tape with the force needed.
So now I use my screwdriver carefully just under the SDCard and it works but I worry about slipping and messing something up.
So am I alone with this problem ? Any good way to "grease" the battery, but not too much ?

No problem as such. I press hard with my nail near sdcard (bottom) downword I see there's a slit on battery at that place. Press down and pull up.

My SDCard is at the top to left of the camera when looking from the back with Android buttons down and headphone jack up.
I don't see any slits on the battery, just a tiny ledge at the top that I guess my screwdriver catches on. But sooner or later I will wear that off.
I just removed the tape, and it might be a bit easier to remove now, although there is some dangerous battery metal showing.
Perhaps I could wrap the battery with something stronger than electrical tape... Like those fabric like things used to pop AA etc batteries out of devices.
Well, huh... Are you sure you have the right battery inserted the right way? Because, there should not be any trouble getting it out at all. Let alone screwdrivers or anything like that needed. Goes out pretty easily with a fingernail.

It's the battery I got with the phone, and that the sales dude installed for me, and the phone works, so yes.
I get the impression my Canadian Telus P500h (Note the 'h') is different than the P500 most of you have.
This is the phone with battery installed. To the left is the phone top, and the thin blade screwdriver is over the SDCard and pointing to where I am prying the battery out. The pens at top and bottom of the pic are where I originally pried and now have broken plastic and some semi-exposed battery metal. At top of the pic (right of the phone) is where I got the sparks.

You think ? It's an integral part of the back body and can't be removed without breaking stuff. Right now I can't even tell if it's the up and down or left and right that are most tight. Maybe both.
And even if it was removed, the battery has no slot at the end for a fingernail. Just a slight indentation over most of the end. With the force I need to remove the battery, I think lots of people would break their fingernail.
I've just marked this down as one of the engineering shortcuts that LG made to make a phone like this for $200. Having to pull that stupid battery out every SIM change or new ROM boot freeze is getting old fast.

Actually, now that I opened the phone - it is exactly the same, it is just that your photo has some weird shade so the red nonsense looks like it is lifted up to the battery edge. So, not really getting what it your problem except perhaps for being clumsy.

I blew up your pic and it's hard to see, but I think I see a fingernail slot in your battery by the SDCard. Mine has no slot, just a very subtle indentation.
And my battery makes a very clear SNAP sound when I push it in. Perhaps my battery is slightly different and a bit larger than P500 batteries.
My battery part # is LGIP-400N . It also says 1500 mAh 5.6 Wh 3.7v
and at bottom it says:
(T)SBPL0102301 LLL DC101203
Even your camera says 3.2 mine it says 3.0 so anybody with same specification would be helpfully.
The battery details are exact identical to mine.
So P500h is slightly different from P500.

No I'm afraid this is not a joke. And I've been working "seriously" with electronics/computer since I was a teen in the mid 1970's building everything from a vacuum tube transmitter to micros with the first generation of micros: SCMP, 8080...
And I've rebuilt automotive turbochargers and transmissions so I'm no mechanical klutz either.

Yes doktornotor, I suspect you are right. I suspect it might have been a bad or out of tolerance phone/battery or perhaps excessive temps or humidity or whatever during storage and shipping.
I returned another phone to get this and they already told me I can't return this one, LOL. As defective I'm sure I could, although I'd bet they'd give me a very hard time, especially considering the damage to the battery now..

Well, I have seen quite a bunch of phones almost impossible to even open. I recall one Nokia which I felt I will crush completely trying to remove the back cover. Tremendous force required. So trust me when I am saying that this one is about the most easy one to remove the back cover and the battery.
If it really bothers you since you are changing SIM cards frequently, would suggest going to some shop and test with another battery or two. If it is the battery, those are relatively cheap to get a replacement. If it is the phone, well... your screwdriver-scratched battery has nothing to do with that defect so you should not have any trouble trying to RMA it.

Yes, some good ideas.
SIMs are not the major issue. Trying ROMs that result in boot freezes are the main reason to keep popping the battery.
I wish there was a hidden hardware reset switch on these phones somewhere.
Heck, it wouldn't be hard for the designers to make such a feature that triggered by holding power, or some combinations down for 10+ seconds.
I'd buy a replacement battery off eBay for cheap. At worst you end up with the same situation and a spare battery for 5 USD or so (+ VAT or whatever y'all call it). At best you have a better-fitting battery on the cheap.

My battery has gone to hell. After getting it down to 5% one day, it just would not hold a charge long. Then I got it down to 10% a week later, and it really got bad. Life is about 1/3 what it used to be. I also have some dust and even small hairs or flecks in the screen.
So...I ordered a new advance replacement unit from T-Mobile, and it just arrived. Simple enough? Well, I have the memory upgrade in mine, so I need to do some component swapping. What's the best way to go about this? What parts can be disconnected easily (or more importantly, reconnected)? Where is the damn battery (didn't see it in the disassembly photos on the site)?

Please specify 'component swapping' in more detail... Are you actually thinking about swapping the memory upgrade??? You do know that that would mean desoldering the 2 big memory chips on both boards, cleaning them and the boards, and soldering them back... How good are you at smd soldering??? We haven't dared doing that, yet... (some pics of upgrading memory of an iPaq are available at http://www.linearlogix.com/ipaq/upgradereview.html
There are commercial services doing the upgrade (32 -> 64 mb), if I were you I'd contact one of those.
Other than that, we're currently swapping lcd screens, touchpanels, mainboards from 3 broken units to create 2 working units and 1 very broken one. So, what do you need to know exactly?
BTW, the battery is stuck on the inside of the back cover.

Ok, so you want to use the screen/touchpanel/backlight assembly from the new one (smart move, not taking that apart; besides the fact that it's glued together and you need to separate it on the correct separation, that also leaves the risk of forgetting the correct orientation of the glass panel with little dots on it, used to distribute the backlight evently onto the lcd; and, there are slightly different assemblies out there which need slightly different panels...). You should keep all boards from the old unit (old mainboard including old radio unit, use the new screen/touchpanel/backlight assemly, and the new case (which includes the new battery).
You could consider swapping IMEI numbers on the units... Although _shops_ never register the numbers when they give out units, service departments might. You know where to find the tool to do that...
The screwing around of the parts should not take more than half an hour if it's the first time you take apart this unit (but have taken apart small electronics before) and less if you've done it before.
Beware of the really thin clear plastic rings used under the screws to screw down the display...
We won't be publishing a very detailed 'how to swap your screen' instruction any time soon but do have some raw unedited pictures of the operation. I'll see if we can get them online any time soon.

I ended up doing the change and ran into a snag--the plastic pin that sticks out of the top power button was loose or broken (probably happened in one of the many drops the unit has experienced). When I opened the case, I lost that. Had to send it to PPC Techs to have them solder in a new power switch.
Other than that, disassembly is pretty easy and straightforward. You mentioned you won't publish a how-to...is that because of not wanting to have it on the site, or that nobody wants to write one? If the latter, I'd be happy to write it up and include my detailed pics.
If you want to make a detailed howto on how to open and close the unit, and how to exchange certain parts, we will gladly put it on!
Do make sure to stress that people need a certain level of experience or be willing to risk losing the device though...
So it happened this morning when my alarm went off and it vibrated. I heard a plastic part vibrating also. The sharp loud noise was disgusting. I shut off my alarm thikning it was my cheap SGP case.
Later today I played around trying to find out if the silicone had a hole or something where the plastic frame was touching the SGS2 phone itself. Nope. I took the whole case off. Each time it vibrates it sounds like... ahh what the hell. I will film it for you guys now.

WTF is that? I took the cover off. I took the SIM card out on another occasion too. It sounds like something on the upper left. If I push my finger down on the panel, it stops. If you notice the few seconds it is sitting on the table flat, it's fine. Just a little weight seems to calm it down. Not sure if its the vibrating motor itself because it is vibrating properly. Sounds like something is loose inside though...
Anyone experienced this before? Should I go for RMA?

Obviously being an XDA-er I'm rooted. I will flash back to stock and unroot. I bought this off of Expansys-USA so I should get *some* reasonable attempt by them to send it back. What are the chances that my warranty gets denied? I don't have a USB jig to reset the counter, but I'll of course get rid of the yellow triangle.
*grrrr... I need to dig up my Nexus S now if I have to go through warranty... I'm guessing I'll be phoneless for weeks*
I don't know if it would invalidate the warrenty or not (technically rooting/custom roms is supposed to), but when I had a problem with my stereo jack not working rather than risking it I just replaced the part myself.
The vibration motor, stereo jack and earphone speaker are all on the same part.
(I got it from this guy on ebay for about $7 if you're curious.)

I see. I'm not sure whats broken really. When I shake my SGS2 I hear something rattling inside. I'm just afraid to open the thing up... is it difficult?
Just watched your video. It sort of sounds as if somehow the vibration motor came loose from its proper spot and is now moving around vibrating against the plastic. Its normally held in with some adhesive (basically double sided tape) within a cutout area.
When I had mine apart I actually took a photo, http://i.imgur.com/fgN9F.jpg, if that makes it any more clear.
I actually recorded the process of me reinstalling the new part (excluding the disassembly, there are lots of clips of that from other people on youtube) but havent gotten around to uploading it yet since my internet connection sucks and the file is nearly 2GB.

No it wasn't really all that difficult to dissassemble, it was actually pretty easy. That said I enjoy taking things apart and trying to fix them. This was the first time I've dissassembled anything as small as a cell phone, but I'm used to taking things apart and trying to fix them when they break. If you don't have any experience taking apart electronics you might want to think twice or just pay someone who fix's cell phones to do it.

thank you for your detailed writeup. im going to try this. ive taken apart my macbook pro to install an SSD before, and a few other electronics, but i'm not the very best (i feel clumsy sometimes), but i'm willing to give this a shot.
The only thing I'm worried about is that I could potentially mess up the phone in other ways in disassembly such that my warranty won't be honored if I need to resort to that... We'll see tonight. It looks like you used two screwdrivers? Which ones will I need? I have a #000 that I see will be needed for the back plate at least...

i just took the screws out and the backplate. i pushd around to make sure things are tight, and they seem to be.
put it together and the vibrate thing happens VERY rarely now..

I opened up my phone and the camera module seems to be loose. Is it supposed to be glued down?
Just to let you know, you say you don't have a USB jig so your Flash counter may make your warranty void, but, if you flash to an ice cream sandwich ROM (Cyanogenmod 9) you can install an app called 'Triangle Away' which will basically get rid of the Flash count and yellow triangle - it needs root by the way. (search it up on XDA, it's by chainfire')
Then you can flash stock and send in for warranty.

I don't remember it being glued down. Its been a few month since I fixed mine but if I recall correctly it just fit snugly in place between some plastic fitted walls.
This is the camera module you mean right?
Edit: I also don't hear anything shaking with mine, did you mabe leave a screw loose inside?

Yeah. Camera module. That's the one. The main 8MP shooter. It's not glued down or anything. It shakes around inside. I definitely did not leave a screw inside because I only opened the back panel and I put all the screws back in.
It's weird because something making noise while shaking the phone has been documented here:

And I noticed that when you activate camera it goes away. Quite strange but as an engineer this makes me wonder HOW that even happens? Shrug.
I'm waiting for my Samsung Focus S phone to come from the Windows Phone challenge and I'm contemplating using that for a month while my i9100 goes out for warranty. Of course I can always use my Nexus S as a backup, but part of me wants to force myself on a new platform for a month and see how that goes... Hahahaha.

Hey Random6, did you happen to find that after replacing the vibrator motor with a new one, the intensity is now less than when new? I used double sided tape, but with 1.5mm, I guess the motor won't vibrate AT ALL.
Also I found that if I don't screw the one that seems to be closest to the vibrator motor all the way in, it obviously vibrates harder, but not hard enough.
I also used two very thin copper plates to sandwich the motor between the plastic plates, but once again, that was too much and the vibrations were not transfered to the phone's body, but I could hear it doing its job.
Any suggestions?

Hi all, I found a defect on my Lumia 920's unibody casing. the top bezel is somewhat loose and it squeaks when the phone is cold and clicks when the phone is warm. I find it very annoying because I like to grab the phone from the top and bottom. here's a video of what I'm talking about:

I already replaced my phone at my Rogers store... you might want to check yours and replace if necessary. I feel the clicking will get ALOT worse in the summer when the weather is hot.

funny you mentioned this, i only just noticed the exact same thing about a week ago....
I had a similar issue with the unibody also.
It make noises when I press between the power and camera button.
I took the phone back to the Nokia Care and after more than a week I went there to have him back but it had the same issue. So I give it back one more time and I'm still waiting....

I have a very slight click near the top of the phone (but not constantly) and that's it. I have the white version. I won't bother changing it because until I read this thread I can't say I even noticed it.
I got a black one on launch and its quiet. No creaks, squeaks or clicks.

If you put it in a protector like one should with a 600 dollar phone you won't ever even notice this issue. Plus other than an annoyance it has no affect on the phones function.

I have a black hong kong version. There's a creak/squeak at the middle left (no button) side. which is little disappointing to me when it's the most expensive phone I bought and build quality was very well reviewed.
Mine does this if I press in the middle of the bottom half of the back. Strange thing is it doesn't always do it, seems a fairly random issue.

my old one does different things in different temperature. In freezing temp it's quiet, in room temp it squeaks, after gaming it clicks.

Mine does this if I press in the middle of the bottom half of the back. Strange thing is it doesn't always do it, seems a fairly random issue.

I have a red Lumia 920 and I am on my 4th unit because each previous phone has had creaking issues on the body. Now, these haven't been the only issues I have suffered but the others are irrelevant to this thread. It does annoy me. I cringe whenever I picked up the previous phones because of the creaking it would make. It makes the phone feel cheap, and quite frankly it shouldn't and thankfully Nokia agree.
I have had my current phone for a day now and so far no problems have developed so I am hoping for the best.
mine was fine until I dropped it twice in the same day (within about 10 minutes of each other) once on concrete, then for some reason decided to drop it again and it bounced off 3 different objects, since then you can hear a 'click' if I press down on the top of the phone in the centre near the front.
bit miffed as I have a scuffed corner now on an otherwise mint phone, have had it for a good few months tho so the novelty of how shiny and nice it looks has almost worn off
I have the white one, a friend of mine has the black one and has no issues with creaking/clicking on the case, but then he has had a silicon case for it since the day he had it, maybe that's helped?
Well, I have had the phone for 5 days and the squeaking/clicking appeared yesterday. I realized that a part of the body feels "hollow" inside so I proceed to disassembly the unit.
When I take out the cover noticed that in fact there was empty space between the case and the board. I put in some supplement (I had to try with several ones until I found the piece that let me close the phone with no extra effort or excessive pressure). Once I get it right, put the parts toghether again and the squeaking/clicking was gone. Also it doesn't feel hollow like before.
I think is a problem with the material expanding and contracting under different temperatures and because it doesn't have a true anchor to the sides (it goes in and out very easy, no extra seals on the sides). Pretty nasty thing for a High-End device.
PS: My carrier (where I bought the phone) said that it was "normal" and refused to replace the unit. Normal my ass!
Aside from that I'm very much inlove with the 920 and WP8.

I hope your supplement is a material that does not generate static electricity. Otherwise your fix may damage the phone beyond repair. Things like paper, cardboard, plastics like bag material that is not treated, cloth, and many others all generate static when in contact with other non conductors like the inside of the phone body. Just a warning from an RMA tech who has seen ESD damage from bad fixes and the customer stuck with a voided warranty.

Yeah, it was non-conductive material. I sort of a tech guy so I know a little about that. I used something that I commonly use as aislant and vibration cancelling in my PC mods. But thanks very much for the warning anyway. :good:
Following the case, after keep ranting about that flaw with my carrier (and phone vendor) I'm with my second unit now, also yellow. I noticed that the power/lock button is lower that the volume and camera buttons but its not a problem (it is lower compared with the firt unit, if this one was my first surely I was going to think that this was the original design).
I've been looking like a paranoid squizo for other defects but so far, so good.
Pretty lame for a high-end phone and a WP8 flagship. Even if its just a batch. Still,, I freaking love the OS.
I have a very specific question with regards to replacing the charging port on the i777. I have searched threads discussing charging port replacement, but was unable to find anything about this specific issue. I am currently going through my first repair on my i777 that needs a new charging port. I bought the replacement on ebay, but something stood out once I compared it to the original charging port I took out. On the original there is a small rubber piece hanging down (around where the screw holes are). On the replacement piece it's just a metal piece hanging down in the same place. Do I need to have that rubber piece on the replacement charging port? Would it even affect the functionality of the phone? Is there a way to take the rubber piece off the original and transfer it to the replacement, or should I just buy one with the rubber piece on? If someone has asked this question already forgive me, but I did not see it in the thread I skimmed through.

That gray part is for waterproofing the microphone I believe. It just slides off of the old part and onto the new one, just be careful. Also if you have no signal, by now you may have already found the following thread. I had to do this a couple of weeks ago to get a signal: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1950114&page=5 I'll try harder to match up the part numbers next time!

i'll report back once i have them
i already took the phone apart just to peek around inside, the part looks just like what's already there. the picture shows some teal/aqua colored tabs towards the bottom, im assuming these are peel off for an adhesive (there did seem to be an adhesive holding the part in place).
based on that link mentioned i would say that cutting is a little extreme, it looks like they cut the board in half, which is definitely NOT how it comes stock.
again i'll report back once i've got the chips. and for under $8 with free shipping i cant really complain even if they dont work out.
The only thing you're actually cutting (electronically) is the ground plane of the board shared by the antenna/radio and the charge port. In short, there's a super low risk of messing anything up, unless you use a sawzall to complete the job.
I assume that it was more cost effective for Samsung to put those items on the same board, but it's a punk move to attach a known replacement part to an antenna that varies by region. Either way, I'm glad to know that the hack is an option but I'd be happier to know that the hack isn't necessary.

Just wanted to report success. The part from new egg worked and was really easy to swap.
I don't have the right size sim card anymore since switching my primary carry, so I can't test reception, but otherwise everything is working (charging, wifi, Bluetooth, etc)
P.s. I did not modify the item I received (no cutting) and it is a 2.3 where the original I removed was a 2.2. I've saved the 2.2 just in case something comes up.

I'll see if I can find a friend with a full size Sim over the next few days and test the reliability. But honestly I'd have to it may be better for people to find a rev 2.2
But for anyone who no longer uses the phone for cell service, the new egg part works great for a cheap and easy charge port replacement.

Hi Everyone,
So I was on holiday with my beloved Ultra, and using it in the pool. Cool thing is, this phone is waterproof! That's what I thought until I got on the plane a few hours later and upon trying to use my phablet the touch screen stopped responding. It seemed to function OK, I just couldn't unlock it or use it as there was some kind of hyperactive spectre flying around inside making it seem like the touchscreen was possessed. I looked a little closer, and not only was there condensation visible in both camera lenses, but upon opening the usb cover there was also moisture inside there. I opened the other side, and the moisture indicator was still white, so I think the problem was specifically with the usb port cover.
Anyway, it's not covered under any kind of warranty as I bought it overseas, and I have taken it to a repair shop who confirmed that it's water damaged and that they would need to fix the damaged USB port and replace the screen to make it work again. I just want to buy a new one as it would be cheaper than getting it fixed, but I have some data/apps on the old one I don't want to lose. Any suggestions on the best approach? If the shop can read the eMMC and back it up, could I use that to restore data/apps onto a new phone, or am I better off just getting it fixed...
Advice/opinions appreciated.
it's a marketing trick. they are not actually waterproof.
I guess this guy's luck was bad. Mine had contact with water a couple of times and thankfully it lived upto its waterproofness promise

This is a stupid reply. I brought it with me in the pool with my kids, made photos and videos underwater (touch block + volume rocker), no problems at all.
Same goes with my wife's Z.
Of course, if you go swimming with the USB flap open, well, you're an idiot. (Not that I accuse OP of being one, just that 80% of the time when I saw someone with a faulty phone/laptop/tablet it was not working because of THEM).

Hopefully someone replies with some advice that is actually helpful... FYI I have used it in the pool (and had it underwater) multiple times before without problems. I always make sure the seals are sitting properly when I close them so I am doubtful it was user error...
The usb port is fully brpken?
I think it's corroded, but definitey doesn't work.

good for you, you were lucky. on the xperia forums and on here, there are many MANY people who had their phones damaged from water. Are ALL of them at fault?
however, call sony and ask them (i did):
1) what *guarantee* is there that with the flaps closed the phone will not receive water damage? they will answer none. There is no case where the warranty will cover water damage. Whether it's your fault or the phone's fault, it is irrelevant to sony. they will NOT cover it.
2) what happens if, after *normal use*... notice this: *normal use*, NOT abuse, the flaps lose their sealing ability? Does the warranty cover it? No. Warranty does NOT cover "normal use wear". Which means the flaps WILL lose their sealing ability and you end up with a non-waterproof phone. How soon? NOONE KNOWS because there is no way to actually TEST it, at least not as a USER. You MIGHT be able to have it tested at sony... but that would mean testing it every. single. time. you close any of the flaps...
your phone, at any given point, MAY or MAY NOT be waterproof. However, since you have no way to test it, it means that you CAN NOT TRUST it to be waterproof, which is, of course, means you have to treat it as NOT waterproof.
which, in the end, means the phone is not waterproof.
as a sidenote, keep any and all profanities to yourself
Blah blah. The phone is waterproof. No need to be all technical and stuff. Can it be used in water for a certain period of time? Yes.
Your post reminds me of when ships were first being built. If a boat ends up sinking from wear and tear does that mean it wasn't a floating device? Also wear and tear....that's why we check our cars at a set time for periodic maintenance because of wear and tear.
I got lax with mine and took it in the shower and got water in it, USB flap is worn. Not the companies, because I didn't take the necessary steps to make sure my phone was periodically maintained.
Just my 2 cents...
