Download Go sms pro or other messaging apps. You can set a ring tone or message tone for individuals by going into individual settings. Open up the message of the individual and hit menu button to access the individual settings

Contact specific SMS/MMS notifications

I was thinking it would be a cool feature to add to the stock HTC Messaging app to allow for custom notifications for different contacts. Go SMS Pro has this ability, but the UI is not something that appeals to me. If someone could make this happen I'd be willing to donate for their efforts. I'm running Eternity if that makes any difference at all. Maybe dev's could start to include it in their ROMs.
Many thanks guys.

What kind of custom notifications??? You can select different ringtones or custom ringtones with the stock msg app. Also pics as well. Care to elaborate on what your referring to??

The notification tones for recieved sms or mms that can be assigned to specific contacts, so the notification tones differ from person to person.
This can currently be done for ringtones when they call you, but not for texts or MMS.
Ringtones and notifications aren't the same, guess I didn't make that clear enough.

Which, it's likely that I just don't know how to modify the notification tones for each contact, as I have been able to edit the ringtones for receiving calls.

Just go download Ringo pro from the market with that app you can have different SMS tones and ringtones for all contacts
That's a nice app, accomplishes what I was looking for. But I still like the idea of having it built into the HTC app. Seems like a worthwhile addition, IMO. But, like I said. If a dev makes custom SMS/MMS tones built into the HTC Messaging app due to my inquiry I'm willing to donate for their efforts.
Thanks again.

[Q] how do i change SMS sound?

where do i go to change the SMS sound? I went to the notification sound and change it but it didn't happen. The SMS sound is set on "whistle" right now.
I know for most Android phones, SMS sound comes from notification sound. Since that did not work for you, what kind of application are you using? Are you using WhatsApp?

Im not using any app at all. I'm on stock rom. When I change sound on the Notification ringtone it work when i get emails or other app notification. The SMS sound is set on "whistle"
If stock open the message app and go into its settings to change the notification sound. It should work and yes the whistle is annoying

not true... you can customize both the ring tone and the message tone to any mp3 you want... no need for any app...

You need to create folders: "notifications" for custom notifications and "ringtones" for custom ringtones.
Folders can be placed in internal phone memory or on external card.
Next, place mp3 files inside the folders and from this moment on, sounds will be available in the notifications/ringtones list.
Hope that helps.

simple... in the music app, choose an mp3 that you want to set as your ringtone.. after choosing the mp3, tap the menu button and you will see a "set as" option... then you have the choice to use it as the phone ringtone... enjoy...

[Q] Google voice notification for text/voicemail

Is there a way do assign a different notification for text vs voicemail in the Google voice app?
Set it to receive your texts through the messaging app. That way you can choose your ringtone for texts through your regular messaging app and still get voicemail through the Voice app with a separate ringtone.

OK, I guess my situation is unique because I am having issues with my text notifications through Handcent or the stock messaging app. That's why I went with Voice for all texts. I can live with one messaging sound if this is the only option.
Thanks

You might wanna check your Voice settings on a computer browser to make sure its set to send you texts through Sprint. You may have a setting on there that's affecting it. I do quite a bit of texting on my phone without issue with Google Voice

Looks like there was a setting on the browser version. Hopefully that fixes the issues....

Good really ring tone app?

Does anyone know of a good ring tone app that let's you edit your mp3s with affects like fading in and out and messing with the audio? Doesn't matter if it's paid or not. it doesn't have to be a ring tone app, it could be an audio app or anything that would let me cut and edit and save my creation.

i wouldnt know of an app that lets you "make" your own ring tones.. but i know rings extended or any file manager can be used to set a mp3 as a ringtone or notification... if you want to cut songs you can use mp3 ringtone factory
Ringtone maker might be what you're looking for.
