OK, so I have a Samsung Fascinate. I asked a friend at work (we are wireless consultants) about rooting an android phone. Well he took it and rooted it and did not show me anything or teach me anything about it. So i have a rooted phone and I dont know what to do now. He said that he could not get Odin on my phone. Ive seen the name Odin used a lot, but unfortunately I dont know what that really does. I guess I just need it explained more clearly. Also I would like to unroot my phone and do it myself, so I can learn how to do it and more about it, but I have no idea how. Ive seen links for unrooting, but most involve Odin, which I do not have. Is there a better way to root your phone, or will any way work? Do I install Odin pre root? I need help! So, if anybody would like to help me i would be greatly appreciative. I really want to learn more about these things and desperately need somebody's guidance.

Odin is a program that you download on your PC. Google it. If I was near my computer, I would post a link. With Odin, you can push files to your phone when it is turned off and even when the battery is out. If you want to start rooting and flashing custom roms and kernels you must learn about Odin.

Look, rooting is simple. You really don't need to learn how to do it. What you need to learn is clockworkmod recovery and flashing custom roms and kernels. This is a great how-to on installing clockworkmod recovery (CWM) and using it to flash files. It even includes screenshot visual aids:

flashing stuff is easy in cwm.. once you get that on your phone, flashing is as simple as selecting a file and pushing a button. the phone does all the work for you

Not knowing if your coworker installed a custom ROM or just rooted your phone and left it at stock, and considering you are just learning rooting and flashing, the best CWM to install for you would be this one:

If you read the thread I linked you to, that CWM file is in there and you should understand the basics of flashing zip files in CWM.
If you are still stock, your phone will revert back to stock recovery and you will lose this CWM once you boot your phone unless you boot directly to CWM after you flash the CWM file in ODIN then flash a custom kernel in CWM. So you may want to read the above linked thread on placing zip files on your sd card to flash in CWM, then follow the instructions in the thread to flash one of these nonvoodoo custom kernels:

Hi I rooted my galaxy s2 and then unrooted it as I did'nt know what to do with it as overclockig and changing cpu frequencies did'nt seem to do anything. I read on your forum bit, that samsung can tell if you have rooted the device or not, how do I avoid that.
When I rooted I downloaded the original Kernal and the yellow triangle went away. Then I unrooted via superoneclick.
Then when I went on to samsung kies the firmware was'nt there, so I did a factory reset and now it is back and is up to date the firmware version is there now.
I'm guessing I should've back my phone up before hand but how and should I have done things the way I did?
My appologies for the war and peace but I am nooob and really want to learn.
What I have learned is off youtube and I could'nt get all the info I wanted, like where to download a safe superone click root.
In the video they used cwm I think but where do you get this and what does this do?
Any help you guys can give me please inbox me so I can learn a bit more.

By not flashing or by using the>> SEARCH will find it >> USB Recovery Jig .

You have gone down a different route firmware wise is KIES official firmware once you change part or modify kernel part you may not get KIES upgrades .

I wasn't going to this question because 30 seconds of Googling would give you every answer you want and more but hey, it's new years, and I'm in a festive spirit.
So your question, first, "what is CWM?". CWM (Clockwork mod) is replacement for the standard Samsung recovery suite which allows you, in addition to the standard functions, to restore data, backup data, flash new zips and a wealth of other great stuff. Basically its your best friend when flashing new ROMS, Kernels, etc.
If you want to do anything above and beyond the bog standard tweaking with your phone (basically everything you find here on XDA) you will need to use CWM. It comes with any and every rooted Kernel you flash. Every Kernel which has root will have CWM. So if you had rooted your phone by installing a custom Kernel you would have it. (side note, you get to recovery by holding volume up + home button + power button for a few seconds).
Now down to how to get CWM and to super one click. If you made a timeline of XDA and rooting, super one click would be at the very very start. Its the dinosaur of rooting. I recommend strongly against using it, to be honest I didnt even know you could still use it. Anyway, the best way to root your phone is by flashing a rooted Kernel. I will presume your phone is now unrooted and you are running stock Kernel + stock ROM. You want to download Odin (http://www.mediafire.com/?a54dbk53vhpkjto) and then flash a corresponding rooted Kernel to your ROM (I recommend CF-Root by Chainfire). I'm not going to tell you how to flash stuff with Odin because there are millions of guides out there, just don't tick re-partitioning. What I mean by corresponding is it build of the Kernel should relate to your ROM. If you are running a XWKK5 ROM for example, you would flash a XWKK5 Kernel. It's pretty clear in Chainfire's CF Root thread what the builds of all the Kernels are.
Anyway I hope that helps you, and I hope you're grateful I've just taken 5 minutes to explain to you things that you could have found guides on written by people much more experienced than myself in 2 minutes of googling.

Belive me, i was just like you for 3-4 days ago, and by now i almost can everything that's needed to be known about rooting. Almost everyone here make it sound so hard to rooting, that's because they can't eplain things in "noob languages".

Actually, Chainfire's CFRoot instructions couldn't be simpler. There's only 10 steps (7 that actually require you to do something)
I don't see what's difficult about:-
*checking your current kernel
*finding the corresponding CFRoot kernel
*downloading same (and downloading Odin if necessary)
*unzipping the tar
*firing up Odin
*putting your phone in download mode (volume down/home button/power button)
*plugging one end of a USB cable into the USB port on your PC/the other into the USB port of your phone
*clicking on PDA in Odin & navigating to where you saved the CFRoot kernel tar file
*clicking "start"
*waiting until the process completes/Odin saying "OK" then unplug the USB cable/wait for your phone to reboot
Or am I missing something ?

Hi guys,
I'm sure there must be one somewhere but after a week of searching I can't find one. Can someone please post a step by step guide of how to flash a rom with clockworkmod without using a PC? I would like Ice cream sandwich with a good battery life. The rom I have at the moment I only get about 20hrs out of.
I have already done a nandroid backup of the rom I currently have and have backed up my apps and system setting using titanium backup. Does this mean that my phone is 100% recoverable should something go wrong?
Links and a tutorial would be very much appreciated. Kinda nervy about bricking my phone.

1.copy the rom zip file to sd card
2.choose "install zip from sd"
3.NAvigate the file and start flashing

Does it matter what I have already got, do I need to wipe anything b4 flash? I have read some posts about flash going wrong because some steps weren't completed to wipe something but it wasn't specific to cwm. Also the roms confuse me there seem to be different versions does it matter which one I pick and will my phone be recoverable without the aid of a computer if something goes wrong?
Sorry for all the noob questions I know they must be really annoying!

Try reading the threads linked here
They should explain everything you need to know about flashing and how to recovery from a bad flash.
Also backup your EFS with Ktool after your rooted.
If something goes "wrong", you're pretty much going to be boned everytime without access to a computer given your phone will likely only be able to be put into download mode at best and the only solution to most of these problems is to re-flash something.
In other words, I'd highly recommend not flashing anything unless you've got a computer handy if you're that worried about things not going to plan.
You are not going to get "ice cream sandwich with a good battery life" right now. ICS builds out at the moment are incomplete/very much alpha builds and not recommended for people who are looking for a trouble-free SGS2 experience.
If you have a Nandroid backup, you can use that to get your phone back to the state it was in when you took the backup so long as your phone has CW Recovery working.
So far as different roms go, read the threads devoted to the roms in the development section & get to know the features/plus/minuses & other users' experiences with these roms then you can make an informed decision about what you might like to try.
Different roms sometimes have different installation instructions, these will be in the thread dedicated to the rom in question.

Odin is for flashing stock Samsung roms mostly CWM for flashing custom built roms that have been developed to flash via CWM only .
If you follow instructions SGS2 flash is 99% safe and the 1 % of bricked phones are 99% recoverable > Not following instructions or understanding and you can reverse those figures + custom rom or root or beta ICS voids your warranty .

Lol would love too and have been but I still have a computer that doesn't like Odin so feel like I have to triple check everything. Heimdall works but can't find out what partitions to put the files in and there doesn't seem to be any specific packages for it. If I could fix my phone when if bricked I'd learn by trial and error.

I am a noob. I admit it. I have checked the threads and the Q&A but haven't been able to decipher a workable answer to my problem, so please forgive me if I'm repeating a past problem.
I successfully rooted my i777 (ICS) phone using Heimdall and my Mac terminal following steps found at galaxys2root.com. I downloaded ClockworkMod Manager and tried to back up my current, stock MOD before attempting to flash a different one. That's when the phone never came out of the backup. I can still get into download mode and have tried flashing the file originally used to root, but to no avail. I have tried taking the battery out, still will not boot up. Is there a way to flash a new ROM with Heimdall? And if so (not knowing exactly how to use Heimdall) how to do that? As a noob, I understand that there will be eyerolling at this post, but I could really use some help to recover my phone.

Originally i was trying just to root my phone. I didn't want to flash any roms or anything like that just root it so i can get rid of the bloatware, and so after much reading i found that the only way to do it on ICS required a method that might have a bricking bug. Well i went for it anyway, did it successfully. All was well, saw the superuser icon, purchased mobile odin pro did the whole bit. It seemed to be working great. Then i had to immediately change kernels since the stock kernel seems to be the culprit with the whole bricking bug situation. Alrighty, well i went and did that sort of successfully? I chose Siyah since thats what most people in the thread chose. Flashed it with mobile odin pro then it got stuck on boot. After more research i figured out where i went wrong, apparently the first link to the siyah kernel was a CWM/jb kernel or some such situation. I apparently should have downloaded the one further down. My fault for being so quick to try to get it all over with. Now my issue now is i'm stuck at boot, Is it possible to somehow flash the zimage of the proper kernel from the recovery menu? Or would i need to flash a tar file or zip file? would that still work if i used a brand new sdcard or would it have had to have been installed previously? Any help or guidance would be very appreciated. Thank you!

Good job doing all the reading you did. Sorry this happened If the jellybean kernel flashed and went to reboot you should have CWM recovery!!! If you download the 4.3.3 ICS no mic swap kernel Yes you can transfer the kernel to a microSD card from your PC with the adapter then insert it in the phone and then flash it in CWM install zip from Sdcard. You can transfer it from your PC to your phone using CWM, and flash the .zip I have never done this so I cant give you detailed info how to do it but I hope some one cool will help you with that if you need it. All you need to do is flash the ICS kernel in CWM and you will be good to go!! Worse case flash the stock rooted ICS package again in Odin and it will flash the stock ICS kernel with the firmware again then flash the right ICS Kernel in Mobile Odin .... GL

He rooted, used mobile odin, flashed mali jb kernel got into bootloop. OP just hold volume up, down and power until CWM pops up and you can mount storage and flash another kernel from there.

If I follow all instructions correctly will my phone not get bricked? Is it just luck to do with whether your phone gets bricked or is it because you download the wrong file? Is it worth rooting also? What are the advantages? I don't have an SD card so if I root would I lose all of my apps/pictures?
It's very safe no you won't lose anything, just install a rooted kernel and your fine.

No problem,Im just advising you.I spent a week reading stuff before flashing anything and I still ran into problems.
If you have the GT-I9100 model I just posted how to root the phone using the stock recovery which saves using Odin in the meantime.
You could try that now if your on ICS firmware.

Be very careful since your on 4.0.4 stock.
Thats why you flash the siyah kernel straight after you flash the su/busybox file.
siyah-s2.v4.1.5.zip is the one for you.
Would it be easier waiting for JB to come officialy? I only want to root to get a custom rom on jelly bean, well I haven't really looked at other things you can do
You can install the leaked lsj one then root that.It could be a couple of months before official one comes out.
Or try custom ones like rootbox etc.
Theres also the option of trying one, then making a nand, and so on and so on.Then you can just restore the nand of whichever one you like.

As a new user that is the single best advice you can take. 99% of issues new users have are caused simply by them rushing into things, not searching, not reading, not learning and then doing something wrong.
I can make a tutorial how to do it, its different then just install SuperSU and a kernel, but it works very good, rooted 4 S2s on this way.
If you read the instructions you will root it succesfully.

1. Install Kies (no need to run)
2. Reboot device into download mode and connect to USB.
3. Load up ODIN.
4. Load Siyah kernel into PDA.
5. Flash.
Its that simple.
Installing a custom kernel will root, install cwm, su etc. No need to mess about with any of the guides that have you installing separate things.

So i can do this on 4.0.4? Heard it is different on that firmware

That is a bug in stock 4.0.4 kernel. When you flash a custom one like Siyah you're completely safe from the emmc bug so have no need to worry about it whatsoever unless you flash stock firmware in odin again.
